Cover pic — ARTIE SCHILLER One of the most exciting additions to Australia’s stallion ranks, Artie Schiller won 10 races including the prestigious Breeders’ Cup Mile-G1 and 6 other Group events. This son of 2YO sire, El Prado is Group One through and through and his first crop sons and daughters have earned rave reports from buyers at the Gold Coast Magic Millions, selling up to $165,000 ... 10 times service fee!

For further information phone Independent Stallions on 03 5794 2248.

I ndustr y pundit, Daryl Sherer - writing in ANZ Bloodstock News

– made an interesting observation following the second session of the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions.

Although the sale (at that stage) was faring well in terms of average and moderately in terms of clearance, Daryl mused about economists stating that Australia has weathered the global downturn better than most countries: adding that may be true as far as TVs, washing machines and mobile phones are concerned.

“Racehorses are a luxury item however and yearlings selling this year are conceived at service fee levels when things were rather different”, Daryl added.

Fortunately the Magic Millions finished marginally down on the 2009 average, but when median figures for leading sires – at one of Australia’s premier sales – don’t balance with 2007 OR 2009 service fees, you’d imagine further fee reductions are in the wind.

However, the mood was relatively buoyant on the Gold Coast and despite all the wrangling with the Queensland government, it’s hard to imagine that the sale will ever re-locate.

That said, Gerry ‘everything-is-for-sale’ Harvey was surely tongue in cheek when quoted he would entertain overtures from anyone … even New York!

I know it gets hot around the Gold Coast complex, but going from mid 30s to minus zero would be quite some sea change.

Supporting the Health of Horses Equiwinner Patch

For good health and optimum performance a horse requires normal homeostasis, that is, the physiological stability achieved by normal negative feedback systems. The demands of training very often leave the horse with impaired feedback systems, which in turn may lead to serious and debilitating conditions. The Equiwinner Patch uses revolutionary patented Smart Cell Signal™ technology to restore  normal homeostasis and full performance.

What conditions can the Equiwinner Patch correct?

Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage (EIPH) including “bleeders” or blood in the trachea (windpipe).

Headshaking for no known cause when the horse is exercised.

Fading effort or pulling up when an otherwise fit horse is asked for performance.

Distress or refusal for no known reason when asked for increased effort.

Dry or dull coat from no apparent cause.

Overheating from lack of sweat (anhidrosis), or patchy sweating.

Equiwinner ensures full hydration and better performance.

Equiwinner prevents stress in the horse when travelling in transport.

“Tying Up”, also called azoturia or equine rhabdomyolysis.

ROYAL IDA Basking in a quiet paddock, Royal

Ida appeared set to live out his days a million miles from the bustle of stable life and the roars of a racetrack crowd. But a young Victorian trainer had different ideas and Royal Ida was plucked from retirement for another stab at glory. It arrived on New Year’s Day. >>

LUkE OlIVER is an impressive young trainer. Holding his licence for five years, luke is firmly of the

opinion that time and tide wait for no man and, as such, makes most of his plays from the front foot.

Back in April last year, luke noticed from a newspaper report that Royal Ida had been retired after a racing career spanning four years, two months, three weeks and three days.

Following his fifth at Morphettville on Anzac Day last, trainer Michael O’leary and the then 8YO’s owners decided that it was time for their beloved Ida to pull up stumps.

After all, the gutsy gelding had been fighting above his weight from day one. Far from blessed with the most commercial of pedigrees (see sidebar), Royal Ida would not make an appearance until he was a summer 4YO.

Punters obviously had an opinion of the newcomer though, sending him out on the second line of betting for a 4YOs and up maiden at Warracknabeal on 1 February 2005. He won … easily.

Royal Ida could only manage a second at Warrnambool at his next star t, but then quickly rose through the country classes, winning at Donald, Murtoa and Warracknabeal again before spelling for three months.

No superstar maybe, but any horse that wins four of his first five and runs second in the other, is no Radish either.

Upping the ante, Royal Ida ran second at Morphettville, won

two on the trot at Cheltenham and missed by a bee’s appendage in his first tilt at black type: a second in the City of Marion-lR at Morphettville.

That minor aberration was soon rectified however with the first of his wins in the Durbridge Stakes-lR (two more would follow) and victory in the Christmas Handicap-G3 (also the first of three).

Indeed, prior to his ‘retirement’, Royal Ida would star t in 28 stakes races, winning eight and placing in seven, including a third in the

SAJC Goodwood Handicap-G1 as favourite.

However, the 2008 Christmas Handicap-lR (his first win in over 14 months) was his last hurrah for O’leary and after five so-so performances in early 2009, Team Royal Ida pulled the plug.

It had been some ride for connections. Their seemingly nondescript sprinter had not only reached for the stars, but had rolled quite a few in the process.

www.tracktotrack.com

Page 13: Track To Track Issue 56

13www.tracktotrack.com

Royal Ida had – quite literally – earned his day in the sun.

Enter luke Oliver at his persuasive best. Perhaps Royal Ida had a little bit more in the tank?

So, after being on the sidelines for 23 weeks, Royal Ida returned at Benalla in October with the 16th win of his illustrious career : and while a half length win at Benalla for a horse that’s won over half a mill might not sound like much, it’s worth noting that his opposition included iron mare and new stablemate Sensational Toy

>>

Exactly 24 years prior to Royal Ida’s New Year bash, a more than handy sprinter by the name of Star Pyramul

stepped out in the Standish Handicap at Flemington: only to finish 10th behind arguably the fastest horse in the land in True Version.

Despite the midfield finish, Star Pyramul had earned his spot with an earlier win over the journey and a stakes placing at two while, subsequent to the Standish, he would take out two black type races in Melbourne.

That said, large commercial outfits weren’t exactly crawling over themselves to obtain the services of this speedy son of Favoured Bay (who would, incidentally, produce a Standish winner with Burano in 1987).

However, in steps Bert Inglis of Benalla Park Stud – who was searching for the fastest sprinter he could lay his hands on – and despite some protracted and convoluted negotiations, Star Pyramul was bound for Central Victoria by the spring of 1987.

And there Star Pyramul would stay until departing this mortal coil in May 2006 with a legacy of 635 live foals from 926 covers over 18 seasons.

Despite his then lack of commerciality in terms of pedigree and paucity of racetrack performance at the highest level, Star Pyramul attracted sizeable books in those first few seasons, averaging harems of 70 or so for the first four years before reaching the ton in 1995.

His popularity in the mid 90s was no doubt due to his sons Colebrook (’93) and Hero Wind (’94, ’95 & ’97) winning four from five SAJC Spring Stakes-G2, but by the time the Bakers sent their mare Star of Ida to Benalla Park in the spring of ’99, Star Pyramul was back down to 40 mares.

In fact, Star Pyramul would cover just 79 mares in his last five seasons at stud.

Still, Star Pyramul would eventually get 211 winners at a strike rate of better than 55% and Royal Ida, who seems to just keep on keepin’ on, is a fitting memorial to an old warhorse.

(14 wins and over $400k in stakes).

Taken back to Morphettvil le for a record f o u r t h D u r b r i d g e (only one other horse has won the race twice in its 30 r u n n i n g s ) , Royal Ida failed by half a length … if you can call a stakes third a failure.

Royal Ida then dead heated for third – in the Group Three AAMI – at Flemington on Derby Day and ran a close up fourth at the Emirates Stakes meet a week later.

But luke always had the Standish Handicap-G3 in mind. Melbourne’s New Year feature race has always had a propensity for unveiling or reawakening with its honour roll including 3YO True Versions, 4YO Grandioses, Publishings and Redelvas up to 9YO Super Impressives.

In the Standish, jockey Damien Oliver cuddled Royal Ida most of the way down the straight before peeling out over the final furlong to make his charge, winning by a long neck from Beltrois.

T r a i n e r Oliver was, understandably, thrilled by the win. Although he had previously tasted stakes success with

Good Red in the 2009 Bagot Handicap-lR – same time, same channel – 12 months previously, luke rated the Standish his greatest thrill as a trainer : “Royal Ida is thriving and showing absolutely no signs of his age.”

Paying credit to O’leary’s past handling of the horse, luke added: “Royal Ida is just amazing … he is 100% sound and easy to train.”

It certainly appears that Royal Ida is going to have to wait a while before he makes it back to the paddock!

Inglis Managing Director, Mark Webster, can tote the company line as good as any.“for a sale that averages around the $30,000 mark, the Inglis sydney classic has a remarkable record in producing outstanding racehorses capable of winning not just here in Australia, but all over the world.

“THE 2010 CATAlOGUE sits equally alongside all of those we have previously assembled

for the traditional sales season opener, so there’s every reason to expect the trend to continue.”

Sound familiar? Well, it should. It’s what any self respecting MD would say about one of his banner sales, but on this occasion, Inglis’ head honcho is spot on.

GRADUATING WITH HONOURS

Page 17: Track To Track Issue 56

17www.tracktotrack.com

InGlIssYdneYclAssIcPREviEW

GRADUATING WITH HONOURS

The Sydney Classic is arguably the best sale in Australia and has, for many years, fought way above its weight.

Its propensity for producing winners – at every level – is nothing short of phenomenal.

Whereas Easter or the Gold Coast will always draw the very best yearlings in terms of pedigree and type, the Classic is invariably a few rungs down the ladder.

Yet, last season for instance, no less than 21 graduates of the Classic won stakes races throughout Australia. How that racked up against other sales in the corresponding period is anyone’s guess and has no real bearing.

What is relevant is the Classic’s consistency: hence Webster’s reference to trend.

last season’s ‘trend’ included Group One winners Whobegotyou, Typhoon Zed, Russeting, Tell a Tale and Triple Honour, while fur ther Group winners numbered Something Anything, Court Command, I Am Invincible, lorne Dancer and Marchinski among them.

And already this season we have seen Whobegotyou win another Group One, while Elliotto, Rightfully Yours, Southern Skye and kid Choisir have all added black type (a Valixir half brother to kid Choisir is one of the highlights of the 2010 chapter).

Certainly the Classic has been a wonderful showcase for young sires.

Whobegotyou (Street Cry), God’s Own (Redoute’s Choice) and Choisir (Danehill Dancer) are all second crop progeny of their respective sires: stallions who have all since increased in stature and value due to such Classic contributions.

Over two days – 24-25 January – Inglis will offer a 522-strong catalogue featuring up and comers such as Snippetson (23 entries), Dane Shadow (19), Oratorio (Ire) (19), California Dane (15), Not A Single Doubt (12) and Stratum (11).

The Thorough MixerThe Thorough Mixer

www.thoroughmixer.com

The Thorough MixerThe Thorough MixerIfyouwanttomixititsworthalook»»

Meanwhile, they are joined by sons and daughters of recent additions to the Group One

sire ranks, Fastnet Rock, Charge Forward and lonhro, as are proven stallions like Choisir, Commands, General Nediym, Hussonet, More Than Ready, Danzero and Testa Rossa.

The Inglis Classic offers much more scope in terms of budget and Newmarket in the last week of January is definitely the place to be.

After all, a trip there – according to Mark Webster’s trend – could take you anywhere!

One of the sad ironies of eastern state racing is the lack of recognition for our western cousins. We sit up and take notice when a Northerly clouts us between the eyes, but that great tyranny of distance tends to diminish deeds which would rate higher if accomplished in Melbourne or sydney.so, be warned and mark Adam Durrant’s name down in your black book. It probably won’t be long before this West Australian juggernaut makes a raid on a racetrack near you.

ADAM DURRANT is not a whole lot dissimilar to other trainers. Same jargon, same

clobber, same background, same work ethic.

Major difference is though, he’s much more successful than most of his peers … or at least he’s heading that way.

Adam’s explanation for firstly, becoming a jockey, and subsequently a trainer, is plain and simple: “I hated school”.

And while his growth rate – both upwards and outwards – was always going to stymie any ambitions of being legged up on champions, at least it was a means to ending organised education.

Despite Swettenham’s purchase, Kaphero will remain with Leon Corstens and be targeted at the Schillaci Stakes-G2 at Caulfield on 11 October before a tilt at the Lightning-G1 and Oakleigh Plate-G1 in the autumn.

Villager ‘Walter’ wouldn’t “hesitate sending a bigger mare needing some speed over her” and reckons he “would be a great horse to breed to at about $5,000-$6,000”.

‘bradjm’ concurred, saying $5,000 to $6,000 for a Group One winning son of Danzero would be a fair and reasonable price.”

Five to six grand? ‘Bomba’ – aka Darryl Kerrigan – told ‘Walter’ and ‘bradjm’ they were “dreaming” but also asked why Kaphero would have to win a Group One to be a stallion?

“Kaphero could go to stud and show up a lot of stallions … a good 2YO that went wayward but is now a genuine, honest racehorse. I do hope he gets a good chance …”

With the way the Corstens stable is firing at the moment and as Swettenham is one of Victoria’s ‘go ahead’ studs, it’s fairly safe say ‘Bomba’

that you’re prayers will be answered.

In a press release, Swettenham Stud’s owner Adam Sangster said he was thrilled to be able to purchase the Danzero sprinter.

“It’s great to know that Kaphero is coming back to Swettenham,” Sangster said. “We bred him from one of our most successful families. Swettenham Stud has purchased three quarters of Kaphero, while his long time owners will retain the other quarter for his future stud duties.”

Word is that Kaphero will stand at around $15,000 inc. GST. Naturally, if he comes out and wins the Oakleigh and Lightning, that figure could change. The astute may well choose to phone Ian Rimington at Swettenham on 0419 887 184 before the Autumn!

Besides, Adam had been riding work since he was 10 years old and with both his mum and dad – Vicki and Geoff Durrant – mad keen on our four legged wonders, Adam had – as the saying goes – grown up with horses.

Geoff had been a hobby trainer from the time his son was a nipper, so when Adam finished his apprenticeship they picked up the pace.

Indeed, the operation expanded some 10 years ago with Adam taking a few horses “up north” on behalf of his father, to places like Carnarvon and Exmouth, and meeting with a bit of success.

Along the way he worked as a farrier – taking a broader brush approach to training – and spent about seven months with top WA trainer lindsey Smith as foreman.

At the time, lindsey’s stable housed quite a few horses which carried the livery of leviathan owner, Bob Peters, including Old Comrade (who pipped fellow sandgroper, Northerly, in the 2002 Australian Cup-G1 at Flemington).

Adam credits lindsey with influencing a great deal of his direction as a trainer, but the association also opened up dialogue with Peters which,

as recent events have shown, has had a profound effect on the rising star that is Adam Durrant.

Peters, apart from the vast nature of his thoroughbred business, is also ‘philanthropic’ by nature and tends to share the wealth among a number of trainers.

Not that such generosity should be confused with blind faith: Adam had – to a large degree – earned his stripes with feature wins in the Hannan’s

Handicap (his first black type victory), Starstruck Classic and Matchmaker Stakes, along with a host of metropolitan wins since taking out a licence in his own right four years ago.

Early in 2007, Peters entrusted lords Ransom with Adam and despite a fourth on debut, the Jeune gelding then peeled off

three in a row, culminating in the Belmont Classic-lR: exactly a month after a his first star t.

Spelling for nearly six months, lords Ransom returned with a fifth and third at Bunbury before a sequence of four victories, including a Bunbury Cup-lR and Pinjarra Cup-lR.

It was then determined that lords Ransom deserved a tilt at eastern riches and was dispatched to the Flemington stables of Danny O’Brien. Unfortunately, lords

Ransom was injured and, despite spending over six months in Melbourne (also having a spell at Peter Morgan’s establishment), the best he could manage in four outings was a third at Moonee Valley.

Returning to Adam’s stable, the young mentor was adamant lords Ransom had plenty

more miles left in those legs. Both on the track and in the water!

Although listed as training at lark Hill, WA’s state of the ar t complex, Adam weaves most of his magic at the beach, doing fast work in the “heavy sand” and spending a lOT of time in the water.

“Working horses in salt water is second to none: especially horses recovering from injury,” according to Durrant.

Adam was certainly on the money there with lords Ransom, who eventually returned to racing in the Railway Stakes-G1 at Ascot on 21 November, running a terrific fifth (beaten 2.3 lengths) after coming from near last on the turn.

lords Ransom, inexplicably, then finished down the track at his next outing – the kingston

Town Classic-G1 – and although Adam was kicking himself for any perceived error of judgement, the stable star pulled up just fine and dandy.

So much so that he made the weight for age Cox Stakes-G2 (2100m) all his own at Ascot, scoring the biggest win of his career and ensuring pre-post favouritism for the state’s premier staying contest: the $424,000 Perth Cup-G2 (2400m) on New Year’s Day.

Well, you guessed it … in an emotion charged finish to the Cup, lords Ransom fought on doggedly to escape the attentions of Ma Chienne who, as fate should have it, is also under the stewardship of Adam.

This was indeed some carnival for Adam … aside from the Perth Cup quinella, the boy who hated school also notched up a 1-2 in the rather ironically named Summer Scorcher-lR with Ma Ma Machine and Proart after winning a race earlier on the program with Golden Heart.

(Both Proart and Ma Chienne had won stakes events earlier in the carnival too).

Post Cup and faced with a circling media, Adam thanked his parents and lauded the deeds of his

stable jockey, Alan kennedy, who had served his apprenticeship with Durrant and the two are rapidly becoming the dynamic duo of Perth racing.

Indeed, the Ascot treble saw Adam take the lead in the WA Trainers’ Premiership after finishing fourth (30 wins) in his first season, followed by runner up positions for the next three.

Although he doesn’t say much, you gather that Adam likes the air up there and is not about to relinquish the lead without a fight: and with 40 horses in work (“eight owned by Peters with another dozen on the books”), he’s considered a very good chance of grabbing his first trainers’ title come the end of July.

As for lords Ransom, he’s likely to be weighted out of most WA events and, as a consequence, is odds on to have a second go at eastern state opposition: with the Australian Cup-G1 in March being mentioned in dispatches.

One might be safe to assume that this time around, it will be Adam Durrant steering the ship as the Perth Cup winner charts a course east.

It may well pay you to remember their names.

fEED SUPPlEMENT company CEOs will tell you until they are blue in the face that a racehorse needs

THEIR brand of electrolytes, THEIR muscle building powders, THEIR balanced pellets, THEIR iron additives, THEIR bandages, THEIR stamp of approval, THEIR ... everything to make your horse go better and faster.

I know because I marketed one company’s specific products. Our jobs as marketers is simply to get trainers to believe their horses go slower without millions of supplements.

And all the time these food supplement companies are just getting you further and further away from the natural state a grazing horse should be in. Well, try this on.

Haylage is forage made for horses from weed-free meadow grasses. It is cut at an optimum time and then sealed using a technique

unique to a little known but highly impressive company named Fitzpatrick Haylage. The packaging allows natural fermentation to take place, which preserves the grass and its nutrients. And the results are spectacular.

So good in fact that former professor of Equine Studies at University of Melbourne and current living legends manager, Dr Andrew Clarke, a man who did his PHD in hay and air quality and dust etc, absolutely loves Haylage

“Gee this is good stuff. I’ve never met the man who makes it but once I heard about it and trialed it on these old champs down here, I fell for it. It really is tremendous for horses.”

And he is one man who knows definitively about how dust can impact a racehorse – especially in barns where the air is full of it.

Which gives Fitzpatrick Haylage a huge advantage over other forms of hay, because it is dust free.

“When I did my PHD in England in the ‘80s and looked at air quality and how it affected horse’s lungs, this form of hay called Haylage was just coming into vogue. Since then it has been more widely looked at for its nutritional characteristics too. I was familiar with Haylage for nine years in England and saw some huge stables start to use it with great effect.

Now it has spread to North America and a company in Canada is producing it successfully too. Dust in the air which gets into lungs can really slow a horse down. Minimal dust around the stables is a massive advantage for a trainer. Dust can have adverse effects in two very big ways on a racehorse - all dust can effect lungs. And when in the lungs, dust can also increase susceptibility to viral infections. A galloping horse takes one breath with each step. Anything that blocks lungs quickly slows them down.”

And as Professor Clarke points out, dust can severely slow down the healing qualities of a horse if

sometimes we lose the forest for the trees or, as RIc cHApMAN points out in his profile on fitzpatrick Haylage, we’ve lost ‘Mother Nature’ for the supplments. Help is at hand though.

HaylageHAYLAGE

Page 31: Track To Track Issue 56

31

BUsInessPRoFiLE

www.tracktotrack.com

there is a good bit of it in the air. Meaning, if your horse gets a cold, or an injury to the flesh it will take much, much longer to heal. Answer is simple – get a dust free environment and the biggest cause of dust is hay.

But this Fitzpatrick Haylage isn’t all about just keeping dust at a minimal level. Its nutrient quality is outstanding.

“Immature grasses can cause diarrhea. This Haylage uses rye grass as it is mature and as it matures more it has higher sugars and nice seeds – both essential for racehorses. As we know the best time to put a horse out in a paddock is when the grasses have seed heads and that is found in this too. So if a trainer feeds a balanced diet and this Haylage, his horses will do better. I see it as an ideal product for racehorses and performance horses,” said Dr Clarke who has no affiliation what-so-ever with Fitzpatrick Haylage other than he uses it to feed our former great racehorses at the legends complex in Victoria.

• Every bag guaranteed - batch numbered for traceability

• Weed-Free

• Natural – no preservatives or additives

• Higher nutritional content and better hygienic quality than hay

• Up to 40% more natural Omega-3 & Omega-6 than any other feed

• Sweet smelling & highly palatable – tempt the most fussy horse

• Maintains a healthy digestive tract for your horse – reducing the risk of gastric ulcers

• Dust-free – ideal for horses with dust allergies

• High in the correct type of fibre for all horses

• Consistent quality & supply – not affected by drought

• Haylage retains 90% of the feed value of fresh grass

• High in vitamins & Amino acids.

• Highly palatable – happy healthy horses

• Increases your horses water intake

BENEFITSforyour HORSE

pROFESSOR ClARkE went on to say he has a theory about bleeding and lungs. “There is no real science that

shows linkage with poor air quality and bleeding but I think there is a link between complications with bleeders and healing. Chest x-ray of a bad bleeder and you see he has a shadow. Poor air means it scars and infections can occur and dust in the air will slow down this healing.

Richard Fitzpatrick, a well traveled and learned man originally from Belfast in Ireland, is the owner of Fitzpatrick Haylage. He lives and grows the product in Gunnedah in NSW. Coming from Europe he knows how important it is to produce something that culls mould – a common problem with hay / silage. The way he seals his product prevents mould and it can be stored outside.

It should be fed to all racehorses. Because the lungs are as important to a horse as his legs are.

Love ‘em or leave ‘em, there is always an aura about the progeny of first season sires: an air of expectation. After all, ‘untested’ means blemish free and all you have to go on is how their sons and daughters look and how you THINK they’ll fare.some choose to sit and wait and then pay a premium in subsequent years if the stock take off (boom 2YO sire, snitzel, for instance averaged $88k on the gold coast last year and $121k this time around).Others can’t wait to be the first kids off the block … prepared to chance their aim on ‘promise’.In this feature, Track ToTrack has compiled a list of first time selling sires at 2010 yearling sales and, in future issues, will ‘track’ their progress.please note that yearling sale prices listed under the relevant sires are based on the first 5 sessions of the 2010 gold coast Magic Millions.

It’s something of an understatement to suggest that the perth Magic Millions Yearling sale holds a huge attraction to international buyers. A

FTER All, t h r o u g h p e r c e p t i v e culturing over a number of

decades, the West Australian thoroughbred industry has developed a tremendous relationship with South East Asia’s buying bench.

Fortunately, such loyalty has been rewarded with a host of WA sold winners throughout Singapore, Malayasia, Macau and Hong kong.

However, the Perth Magic Millions has taken on a whole new dimension with the victory of Scenic Blast (an $85,000 graduate from the class of 2006) in the king’s Stand Stakes-G1 at England last June … widening the audience so to speak.

Magic Millions Managing Director, David Chester, is quick to point out that Scenic Blast wasn’t the only ‘swallow’ that summer : “Not only did Dan Morton snap up Scenic Blast out of that year’s sale, he also ended up with Scenic Shot ($40,000) who won last year’s lkS Mackinnon Stakes-G1 at Flemington on Derby Day. >>

Page 44: Track To Track Issue 56

Then there is the stock by proven interstate based sires such as Al Maher, Bel Esprit, Charge Forward, Exceed and Excel, Fastnet Rock, Fusaichi Pegasus, General Nediym, Hussonet, lonhro, More Than Ready, Not a Single Doubt, Rock of Gibraltar, Show a Heart, Snitzel, Tale of the Cat, Testa Rossa and Zeditave, plus international star War Chant.

Meanwhile, there are either full or half relations to stakes gallopers including Black Bean, Coniston Bluebird, Covertly, kusi, Natural Blitz, No Wine No Song, Old Comrade, Scenic Shot, Able Prince, Gold Rocks, Marasco, Moccasin Bend, Moon Dragon, Roman Time, Crown Princess, Famous Roman, Idyllic Prince, So Secret, Translate, Mansion House, Enzedex Eagle, Ma Ma Machine,

Clueless Angel and Cheyenne Dancer … keeping in mind that many of those mentioned have made names for themselves east of the Nullarbor.

There are also youngsters from stakes winning mares including Arabian lass, Born Priceless, Mystic Chantry, Prime Again, Ambers Halo, Arabella, Isanami, Twilight Spy, Born With Wings, Chinese Arithmetic, Ete Pins, Genuine Girl, la Rose Noir, Magic Heaven, Most Secret, Once Upon a Crime, Vintage Dance, West love, Ebony Magic, Full Pass, lady knockout, lady Wild, Bella Diva, Marwell lady and Empire Dancer.

The sale will be held at the Belmont Park Sales Complex from 27-31 January, while the feature Magic Millions Raceday will be conducted at Ascot racecourse on 30 January.

Don’t forget to book your flight!

“For a total outlay of $125,000, the pair has won close to $4.5 million between them!

“Graduates in recent years have also won the VRC Derby, VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes, Railway Stakes, kingston Town Stakes, Singapore Gold Cup and International Sprint in Hong kong.

“The 2010 sale has attracted 630 yearlings – youngsters from WA and other states throughout Australia – and prospective buyers will be impressed with what they see.

“It’s a great selection of yearlings.”

Well over 120 different sires are represented including locals Bearcat, Blackfriars, Bletchley Park, Helenus, Hurricane Sky, key Business, love a Dane, McFlir t, Oratorio, Vain Rancher and Zedrich.

Plenty of excitement will surround the initial offerings by WA based first season sires including Due Sasso, Natural Blitz and Saxon, while promising young stallion Flying Pegasus weighs in with the largest draft … 54 of them.

sO AS TO ACHIEVE this, what do we do? Well, we know they have to be trained. We know they have to be

fit. And we know they have to be fuelled correctly. Many, many trainers have been brought up believing there is a standard feeding program that works for all horses in work.

And, naturally, as science has developed in all industries of life, these blokes are being proven wrong….time and time again.

“WELL IT MUsT gO hand in hand with being practical about feeding, but yes there is definitely a place for the science.

Trainers tend to feed a lot more expensive supplements than they need to. This costs them and owners more than they need to spend. for instance, I have never ever had to suggest a trainer use an iron supplement in Australia, with the exception of a couple of horses that had medical conditions - feedstuffs are naturally very high in iron so in 95% of cases you just

do not need to add more to the diet. More often than not when looking at diets for racehorses I will take a lot of things out of the diet. This usually has a couple of effects: one is the feed generally tastes a lot better without a myriad of supplements being added to it so the horses eat up a lot better, and the trainer doesn’t have to spend so much on feeding bills. I am not saying you shouldn’t use supplements, but they need to be used in a way that meets a horse’s requirements.”

Dr Richards is not only highly trained in the art of feed preparation, but she is honest and will save every trainer money - which dominoes into every owner being pleased too.

she was educated at uni in Armidale, completing her rural science degree in 1999, the end of an incredibly bad drought. The Dairy industry had just been deregulated, but cotton was strong. Beef, however, that year was as flat as a tack. Only three of her graduating class of 35 went

suppose you had a horse - or 20. Doesn’t matter the number really, but just suppose you had them for the purpose of racing, having fun, winning money etc.

Nutrition must be looked at very seriously. And over supplementing horses these days is just as bad as not supplementing at all.

Fortunately Australian trainers have Dr Nerida Richards and her ‘Do It Yourself ’ diet planner, FeedXl, to turn to in order to get it right and correct the imbalance.

She has been schooled re the benefits of feeding a racehorse. She knows what to add, what not to add, what helps, hinders and has the greatest value to reaching superior horse health.

Her expertise is so vast she is called on by Pryde’s EasiFeed, kelato Animal Health and Dr John konhke to help get the balance of nutrients right.

“We surveyed 75 trainers about nutrition once, what they fed and what they thought their horses needed. The second last

fIRST YOU TEll FEEDXl about the horse, with details like bodyweight, current workload and any

problems like tying-up being taken into account to calculate the horse’s feed requirements..

Second, you tell FeedXl what the horse is currently being fed. Every feed and supplement available in Australia is either in, or can be quickly added to the FeedXl database.

Finally, FeedXl shows you if what you are feeding is meeting the horse’s requirements for energy, protein and a heap of vitamins and minerals, all of which are important for performance on the track. If your diet isn’t up to scratch it is simply a matter of adjusting the amount or what you are feeding to balance it all up.

life is changing all the time. Trainers need to be a part of that change.

- Ric Chapman

trainer we interviewed, a really sweet older gentleman said to me, ‘do you want to know how to get a horse to win a race?’ I quietly thought to myself, this is going to be interesting. Then he smiled and said, ‘get a horse that can run’!”

“And you know what, he is right. Nothing I can advise or suggest will stop or help a fast horse to go better. look at Dealer Principal the other day at Randwick. They just know how to win. It almost doesn’t matter what a trainer feeds exceptional horses, they will win. But horses in the middle to lower range of ability do need help. Slow ones will never win though. If trainers took a closer look at the diets of the vast majority of the mediocre ones, they will get them to go better…and looking at the diets of the very good ones will help them race longer.”

into animal nutrition. The rest went into the cotton agronomy business. “There were 3 phDs on offer, so I could have done pigs or ruminant work – but I loved horses so went there. I also loved intensive nutrition and horses need to be fed properly to give their best. I have always been interested in racehorses – and you have to be because it is a massive part of the entire horse industry and is more interesting too – particularly racehorses with problems.”

she formed her first company named Equilize Horse Nutrition to support feed and supplement companies and help them make top shelf products. Then, to provide feeding and nutrition support to trainers and horse people, along came feedXL.com - which is beginning to really shake up the racehorse feeding landscape.

“feedXL is a recreation of my original ‘Equilize’ software. While ‘Equilize’ proved to be successful, great advances in technology gave us the opportunity to create

SO THERE IS A PLACE FOR THE SCIENTIFICALLY TRAINED EQUINE NUTRITIONIST IN RACING?a far more user friendly and accessible tool. When looking to incorporate these advances I found Dr susan Meszaros and Rod Vagg of X’prime pty Ltd, a progressive software development company with experience in developing agricultural software accessible over the internet”.

This union gave birth to the revolutionary feedXL.com website where trainers and horse people can simply go and by using the DIY diet planner tool, work out definitively what is best for their horses.

Why, but why do they keep throwing phar Lap in our face? The movie was filmed in Australia, had Australian actors, and we’re pretty sure the horse who played phar Lap was Australian. And thanks to some nifty spin doctoring back in the 1930s, most Americans – and therefore the world – think that he’s Australian too.

We’ve probably (intentionally) missed quite a few Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate winners there as well, come to think of it.

We could, somewhat tar tly, mention that they all made their names on this side of the pond, but then they’d only bore you senseless with Balmerino … Cadiz … Happyandunoit … Horlicks … Starcraft … Vengeance of Rain … all of whom made a pretty good show of NZ breeding in other corners of the globe.

Get ‘em star ted and they’ll tell you that New Zealand bred horses won 18 (of 68) Group One races in Australia during the 2008/09 season and let’s not forget So You Think’s Cox Plate in October, nor Monaco Consul’s Derby a week later.

And blow me down if they didn’t achieve all this with just 6% of the racehorse population.

It would appear that there’s a slight flaw in that last stat however, given that while you’re a big chance to produce a bunch of Aussie-bred scrubbers in a lowly maiden out the back of Bourke, it’s fairly remote that someone would fly a horse from Auckland to campaign at the picnics. In other words, that 6% is not entirely apples for apples.

Do they breed the best horses? Debatable. Do they breed very, VERY good horses? Absolutely.

Will there be a raft of Group One winners waiting to be plucked from the 2010 New Zealand National Yearling Sales series? You betcha.

One very good point New Zealand’s marketing machine does make is that you only have a 0.000026% chance of winning lotto, while shoppers at 10 NZ Premier Yearling Sales between 1999-2008 had a 1.26% chance of finding a Group One winner at karaka (a figure which could easily grow given 2008 graduates are now only 3YOs).

This time around buyers will have 483 yearlings to select from in the first session of the sales series which runs from 1-8 February.

According to the company blurb there is – for the first time – over 50% of yearlings that are either full or half siblings to stakes winners, or out of stakes winners.

Of those there are 36 half or full brothers or sisters to Group One winners, while a fur ther 19 are out of Group One winners.

Naturally, there will be plenty of interest around siblings to So You Think (lot 221 by Elusive City), Monaco Consul (lot 271

by Golan), Mufhasa (lot 160 by Perfectly Ready), Tell a Tale (lot 332 by Bel Esprit), Court Ruler (lot 413 by keeper) and, one of biggies, Darci Brahma (lot 431) whose first crop of yearlings will also be on offer at karaka.

In turn, there will be sons and daughters of Group One winners Miss Potential, Pernod, Popsy, Honor lap, Cannsea, lashed and Moire to name but a few.

It will hardly come as a surprise that Zabeel (44 yearlings), who notched up stakes winner No. 124 when Rainbow Styling won the Tattersalls Club Cup-lR at Randwick (leaving him just six short of his legendary sire, Sir Tristram), is well represented. Indeed, it’s a number only exceeded by that of kiwi champ O’Reilly (53), local hero Darci Brahma (48) and Pins (45).

Other sires with sizeable numbers include Fastnet Rock (16), Pentire (16), Encosta de lago (13), Holy Roman Emperor (11), Fast ‘n’ Famous (11) and Redoute’s Choice (10).

Naturally, everyone who’s anyone will be in town from the end of January, lapping up the hospitality from myriad marquees throughout the karaka complex.

You’d better get yourself there … just don’t mention Phar lap!

SWs Kaphero, Princesa & SPs Keeneland, Wasimah. ½ sister to SW Noble Hero and closely related to SW Hunza, dam of Golden Slipper winner Courtza (dam of Champion Sire O’Reilly), Our Pompeii etc.
