Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water …

With a successful Easter done and dusted (and followed up by the Melbourne Autumn and QTIS 600), you could be inclined to believe that the tough yards of bloodstock selection were behind you, but then along comes Melbourne’s Great Southern (385 weanlings and 382 mixed) and National Sales series with well over 2300 weanlings, yearlings, broodmares and racehorses on offer on the Gold Coast.

Yes, you’ll probably need a spare pair of sneakers, but at least you’ll have nice weather up north!

This will also be the first major hit out for newly minted Magic Millions Managing Director, Vin Cox, who arrives at the company with one helluva CV.

ON TRACK

Kicking off his apprenticeship with Inglis in 1988, the affable (and astute) Cox quickly established close ties with industry folk far and wide, building up a reputation for fair play on both sides of the equator.

The Australasian representative for Keeneland since 2003, Vin hung out his own shingle – Vin Cox Bloodstock – in 1992, which has proven to be one of the nation’s most successful agencies.

These are still tough times for breeders and strong leadership is a must.

Time will tell, but Magic Millions appears to have pulled the right rein with this appointment.

THE ACHIEVEMENTS of Chris Waller throughout the Carnival would loom large on many people’s highlight reel. In what is an incredibly competitive and largely frustrating task, the job of buying horses is

never an easy one. The task for Waller and his crack team of trusted steeds is to set off to Europe on an annual basis and purchase horses in training. Thoroughbreds, whom, in the eyes of Chris and his merry men, have not fulfilled their true potential.

To try and find ‘value’ in any business is not easy, but when there are thousands of bloodstock agents all gathered in the same spot searching for the ‘right’ horse, the treasure hunt becomes almost impossible.

With the benefit of hindsight, the agents who converged on the 2009 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale would all be in agreement that the X that marked the spot was placed on lot 1081. Chris Waller purchased this treasure chest for 105,000 guineas and the horse in question was Stand To Gain.

Be it the star of the show Black Caviar in the TJ Smith Stakes or the handful of punters who had a nibble at My Kingdom of Fife at $151. Everyone looks back on these festivals of racing with different highlights and tales.

The highs and lows of racing were also beautifully played out in the run up to the race. Rod Quinn, a journeyman jockey to a certain extent, was without a ride in the Cup until the scratching of Mourayan.

Quinn had only recently purchased a new mobile phone and in his words “something was wrong with it, it didn’t ring this morning and when I checked my

phone at about 8.30am there were about six missed calls from the Chris Waller stable … it’s lucky for me that they waited.”

It could have all been so different for Quinn (pictured left), Waller and Stand to Gain but patience was rewarded.

With jockey legged up it was left to Stand To Gain to deliver and prove that it’s not just yoga and meditation

needed to become at one with yourself. A switch to warmer seas was all Stand to Gain needed to ‘find himself’.

The future is exciting for this 5YO and although the weather may force Waller’s hand as to Stand to Gain’s future, it is an

indication to the talents of the man and the horse.

Whilst it may be foolhardy to become over excited about Stand To Gain’s win, we cannot take away the achievement. With both My Kingdom of Fife and Stand to Gain winning top

tier races throughout the Autumn Carnival Chris Waller has proved to the world that if you look

One Sydney Cup: fitter and wiser. Chris Waller’s exploits with the aforementioned My Kingdom of Fife (another UK import, who went on to land the Group One Queen Elizabeth) are proof, if needed, that the Sydney handler knows what it takes to get a horse ready for the big day.

Chris Waller’s charge began his Australian adventure in the Chairman’s Trophy over 2600m at Royal Randwick. In truth, Stand To Gain was never competitive … the winner, Once Were Wild, was bold up front and in a perfect rhythm and few horses in Australia would have been able to peg back Gai Waterhouse’s galloper that day. The experience and education was invaluable and despite being unfancied in the market, Stand To Gain headed to the Group

got serious. Stand To Gain avoided the trouble, relished conditions and showed a game, battle hardened attitude common with European stayers, to last home from Older Then Time by a length.

Even the most optimistic of European racing fans would have been surprised by the win but not Waller: “he’s a tough stayer, who has found his niche … 3200m on wet tracks” the handler said post race. The word niche could not be more apt when discussing Stand to Gain and his trainer.

Waller has led the way in purchasing horses from overseas to attack what has to be considered the ‘weakest’ division in Australian throughbred racing … the stayers.

Stand To Gain’s victory in the Sydney Cup gave Waller a 100% ROI, with surely more to come under suitable conditions. It is a clear sign of the times not only of Waller’s mastery in finding ‘value’ but also, and arguably more importantly, an indication that racing in the 21st century is becoming truly global.

Beastly Frankel is simply awesomeLISSA OLIVER is – like the entire racing world – in awe of the phenomenon known as Frankel and reports on a day at Newmarket no-one is likely to forget.

N I C K N A M E D Pegasus by Trainer Henry Cecil and his staff, and The Beast by racing journalists,

Frankel – the namesake of much-missed American training legend Bobby Frankel, lived up to all three superlatives with a stunning win in Europe’s first Classic of 2011, the Two Thousand Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday 30 April.

It was a fitting tribute to his late grandsire, Sadler’s Wells, who had passed away naturally at the age of 30 only four days earlier. The son of Galileo retained his unbeaten record in scintillating style, already inviting comparisons with Sea The Stars.

Frankel did it the hard way, taking up an early lead and scorching away from his rivals as if already entering the final 200m, instead of having 1400m left to run! Many onlookers felt that jockey Tom Queally had suffered a rush of blood to the head, but Henry Cecil later explained it was all part of the plan: such was the enormous confidence behind their breathtaking stable star.

He must have been some 10 lengths clear at the halfway point and continued to keep going. Newmarket’s Rowley Mile is infamous for ‘The Dip’ 400m out: the steep incline coming out of it, treacherous to many a horse who has gone too early for the post. Those who had backed Frankel to the short odds of 1-2 must have had their hearts in their mouths.

It looked for a moment as though he would start to come back to the field, which would have been no surprise given the speed he had gone off at, but Queally had only to give him a slight reminder and Frankel kept gamely at his work, coming home in the end by an impressive six lengths.

Timeform gave the colt a provisional rating of 142 after the win, the highest for a Two Thousand Guineas winner since the brilliant Brigadier Gerard in 1971. For popular trainer Henry Cecil, adored by the British racing public (and, like the late Bobby Frankel, battling cancer), it was a 25th British Classic win and his third in the Two Thousand Guineas, following Bolkonski in 1975 and Wollow in 1976. Both the earlier winner were, incidentally, ridden by

Gianfranco Dettori, father of the latter-day icon Frankie.

“It worked out exactly as we wanted,” said Cecil after the race, “he could relax from the front and I think he was wondering where the other horses were.

“He was almost going to sleep and waiting for the others. It’s difficult to compare the different years and generations together, but to have these great horses is very important and it’s good for the British racing public … they love a champion.”

Jockey Tom Queally added: “The way I rode him was one of the plans and he was very relaxed going to the post and I decided to go on after 50 yards.

“We had thought about it long and hard beforehand. I looked back and saw there was a good gap between them and us so I had a breather and then went on again. I know this horse well and you know what you have left in the tank. I was amazed how far clear he was … it was so easy.

“I started out riding ponies and I’m very fortunate to be here today. This is a very special for me and a lot of my family are here. He (Frankel) has shown a lot of speed and the only thing that we would have learnt from today is that he is able to motor.

“He was just idling in the last furlong or so, but there was nothing in the race to help or hinder him. I have never sat on anything like him and it is great to sit on something so great so early in my career. He is unbelievable and you can’t really start talking about it because there are no words to describe what he did out there.”

Frankel was winning his sixth race and fourth Group success, having landed the Group One Dewhurst Stakes and the Group Two Royal Lodge Stakes at two, as well as the Group Three Greenham Stakes last month. He is now favourite for The Derby, despite the fact that the style of his win in the Guineas may cast doubt on his ability to stay a mile and a half. Cecil said early on in the horse’s career that he did not see him as a Derby horse and would be reluctant to run him at Epsom.

Owned and bred by Juddmonte Farms, Frankel is a half-brother to the Group Three Lingfield Derby Trial winner Bullet Train (by Sadler’s Wells) out of Kind (by Danehill), a Listed winning half-sister to the dual Group One winner and young sire Powerscourt (by Sadler’s Wells), a Group winner over 2000m and 2200m.

Powerscourt also finished third in the 2800m Irish St Leger. Frankel is her second

foal and it’s her speed on the racecourse that casts doubts on his stamina and ability to stay 2400m. Her dam Rainbow Lake (by Rainbow Quest) won the 2400m Lancashire Oaks (then Group Three), while her dam Rockfest (by Stage Door Johnny) was second in the 2400m Lingfield Oaks Trial (then Group Three).

Kind has a two-year-old full-brother to Frankel, named Noble Mission, who is in training with Henry Cecil and is described by Cecil as being: “more forward than his brother!”

Frankel is an impressive looking rich bay, very muscular and with a good eye. Although his tack suggests a temperament problem, he appears relaxed (if eager!) in

his races and returned to the winner's enclosure very calm within himself. He certainly couldn’t be described as an anxious individual.

Although he sweats up before races, particularly between the hind legs, which is usually a big problem, it clearly doesn't affect his performance, as he did so both before his Greenham Stakes win and prior to the Two Thousand Guineas romp.

As So You Think stormed to an impressive 10 length victory at the Curragh on Monday 2 May, all talk was of how he might fare against Frankel.

Opinion is very much divided, but the majority who were present for the Australian champion’s victory, expressed the belief that So You Think might be made to work very hard indeed by 3YO Frankel … a contest which would certainly be one to savour.

Aussie star wins by 10 in European debut

T R A D I T I O N A L stepping-stone to the Group One Tattersalls Rogers Gold Cup over 2000m on 22 May, the Group Three

High Chaparral Mooresbridge Stakes over the same course and distance, generally attracts a very good field and was won last year by Irish Derby hero Fame And Glory.

The mighty presence of So You Think had frightened off many Group One level horses, so the Australian had – on paper at least – a fairly easy task. No one, his connections included, were quite prepared just how easy!

Pulling hard under Seamie Heffernan in the initial stages, So You Think settled comfortably into third behind stablemate Windsor Palace, on whom the trainer’s son, Joseph O’Brien, set a good, strong pace and soon had the field strung out in a line. As they rounded the final turn into the home straight, So You Think cruised up on the leaders and never looked in danger of being beaten, striding away effortlessly at the 300m point and opening up an ever-increasing advantage.

Possibly buoyed by the fact that So You Think had fetched a bit of Australian sunshine, a larger than normal crowd turned out to enjoy the rare warmth and bask in the presence of a truly international star. Both Evan Arkwright, Curragh Commercial Manager, and Paul Hensey, Curragh General Manager, expressed delight at the sheer volume of fans who arrived at the Kildare course to see So You Think open his European account.

9-1 second-favourite Bob Le Beau 10 lengths behind in second, with a further two lengths back to Mid Mon Lady, just ahead of Group One winner Termagant. Not surprisingly, given that the next in the betting was 9-1, So You Think started at the restrictive odds of 2-13, making those who laid 1-2 on Frankel look generous!

Connections were understandably delighted that he had won the Coolmore-sponsored race, named appropriately enough in honour of So You Think’s sire High Chaparral: “He’s only been doing half speeds at home and was just ready to start today,” said Aidan O’Brien, “you couldn’t have asked for more … he’s an incredible specimen and it’s a privilege to have him.”

O’Brien listed So You Think’s targets as being a return trip to the Curragh on 22 May; the Prince Of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot on 14 June; King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot on 23 July; Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown on 3 September; and, finally, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on 2 October.

A mouth-watering clash is now on the cards as the Tattersalls Rogers Gold Cup is also the target of last season’s Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner, Workforce.

It was, appropriately, a real carnival atmosphere at the Curragh and one lady had travelled over from Melbourne just to see him run. When word of this reached the ears of connections, Carol Cleary, who lives in Brisbane, was extended an invitation by winning owner John Magnier to join him in his box, an invitation also offered by Coolmore. Though a bitter loss to home fans, So You Think is proving the greatest of ambassadors across the water and is truly uniting the international racing community.

The Liston family-owned operation in the North East of Victoria has quickly made a name for itself as a player in the industry, particularly at the yearling sales … and is now moving into the stallion business as well.A thoroughbred haven encompassing 2000 acres of lush pasture with five kilometres of Loddon River frontage, the Eddington based farm is just 90 minutes from Melbourne Airport and, in a short time, has become one of Victoria’s most successful thoroughbred farms.And they have just got bigger.

Three Bridges sold Blue Diamond Stakes runner-up Hallowell Belle at the Premier Sale last year and the farm consigned her Red Ransom (USA) half-sister this year that sold for $240,000 and was one of the sale features: “We aim to bring the best draft we can to Melbourne … we like selling in Melbourne and want to support the Melbourne Sale.”

Having created an impression with their professionalism in the yearling market, this year Three Bridges will stand a stallion in the shapely form of Stryker, a stakes winning son of Fastnet Rock, Coolmore Australia’s most expensive nomination in 2011.

which fits in perfectly with the Liston family’s aim of getting horses back with nature, growing their horses out in large paddocks.

At last year’s Premier sale Three Bridges grossed over $2 million and averaged $106,250 for their 20 horses sold, with the draft highlight being a $300,000 Exceed and Excel colt sold to Mick Price. This follows on from selling the highest-priced yearling in Victoria when an Exceed And Excel colt sold to Darley for $750,000 in 2008.

At the recently completed Premier Sale, Three Bridges again sold 20 yearlings, grossing just over $2 million at and average of $100,125 with a top-price of $280,000 for a stunning Lonhro filly.

“That was a thrill but it all comes down to what we are about, and that is selling quality yearlings,” stud principal Peter Liston explains.

Liston reports strong interest in Stryker and is keen to draw the parallel between the horse and yearling sales.

"He (Stryker) is an outstanding type and, let's face it, yearling sales are all about type. Understandably then, we're really excited about getting this horse and he's already been well accepted by breeders. I reckon he's a tremendous boost for Victorian breeding."

A stunning bay grandson of Danehill (USA), Stryker - owned by Three Bridges with Richard and Donna Pegum of Range Park - sold as an Easter yearling when purchased by the Ingham family for $600,000.

Bred on the same Fastnet Rock/Woodman cross as the dual Group winner Rothesay and the same successful Danehill/Woodman cross as the Group One winners Miss Finland, Proviso and Alexander Tango, Stryker is

– according to Peter, a well named horse.

“The Inghams got it right,” he said, “as he is a particularly striking horse. He has a beautiful shoulder, great girth, a long rein and fantastic hindquarters - he is just a superb type.”

And superbly bred too, hailing from one of Australia’s most prolific Group One families. His dual city winning dam Laetitia (also dam of the stakes placed metropolitan winners Seeking Attention and Puerto Banus) is a full sister to the tough Listed winner Conspectus.

Matriarch of this family is the wonderful mare Denise’s Joy, Stryker’s four times Group One winning fourth dam. Her descendants continue to compete at the highest level - big race winners from this family including More Joyous, Euphoria, Bentley Biscuit, Joie Denise, Tuesday Joy, Sunday Joy, Miss Danehill, Joie de Grise, Arlington Road and successful young stallion Thorn Park, whose son Jimmy Choux is New Zealand’s best three-year-old.

The Listons have been on the look out for a stallion for some time now, determined to make just the right choice for their clients: “We wanted a horse we really believed in,” Peter said, “and Stryker is that horse. We are thrilled to be standing him.”

Noting that the Ingham family has retained shares in Stryker, Liston announced that the four-year-old will stand at an introductory fee of $11,000.

“The time here in Victoria has already been extremely satisfying and now with the arrival of Stryker we look forward to the future with real enthusiasm,” Peter summed up.

West TAFE continues to gather momentum and prestige as Glenormiston College has confirmed its 2011 Basic Stablehand Course will be based from the stables at Caulfield, Flemington and Geelong Race.

One of Racing Victoria’s preferred provider’s, South West TAFE delivers training by qualified industry assessors, in partnership with Racing Victoria Limited (RVL), that is essential in becoming a certified and registered stablehand in Victoria.

Lisa Coffey of Glenormiston College and Racing Victoria Limited has been involved in the Basic

Stablehand Course since March 2010. Ms Coffey is keen to encourage those who are passionate about horses and have a strong work ethic to take up the course.

The course teaches basic skills in the workplace, with a focus on safety regulations and basic horse handling. The length of the course depends on each student’s skill level, and it can be extended over longer periods if necessary. A nominal a d m i n i s t r a t i o n fee applies.

Training takes place on the job for a minimum period of 15 working days. Hours are from 6.00 am to 10.00 am Monday to Friday.

I was born in Egypt and came over to

Australia in 1958 when I was 11. I went to secondary school here and then on to university. I became a member of the Sydney Stock Exchange and practiced as a stockbroker until 1993.

You owned successful mare Scomeld in the

late 70s: how did that come about?

I was advised by Bart Cummings to buy her … he felt she would go on to win races and go on to breed after that. That was my first real ‘hands on’ experience: she won a couple of Group races and then we retired her. What I learnt from her was having just one horse was a bit of a risk and you need a spread of horses to make it successful.

Was she a key factor in your decision

to invest heavily into Arrowfield?

I found that the operation was becoming too big and we needed to expand. Breeding had changed from being an ancillary business like that of cattle/sheep farming. It was the farmers who used to be the breeders who would have one stallion in the field and it became people like myself who had a business background. When the government said ‘OK we are going to put you on a level playing field with New Zealand’ in the mid 80s a lot of people stood up and decided to invest.

Do you think your business background

and analytical approach in the early days gave you an advantage?

As a financial analyst, I was interested in statistics and I analysed stallions in a different way, you used to buy stallions on gut and performance on track. The assessment of stallions wasn’t that advanced in terms of stats and research. We were able to look at the statistics readily available

and purchase that way on a much deeper level. It was a precise look into the thoroughbred and I believe that stood us in good stead.

Obviously there have been people closely

involved who have an ‘eye’ for a horse?

A prominent person throughout my life has been Dr Percy Sykes the world famous vet, a wonderful horseman and a mentor in making decisions from the ‘horse’ side of things. I was doing the analytical work and he was looking at the horses as types and between us things started to really take off. He is a great friend and still a very integral part of the team.

I’m assuming then that the purchase of

Danehill, who may have been considered a slightly leftfield pick as a stallion, was deeply dependant on a combination of factors … including statistics?

Danehill is a very good example of how we do things. When it came to Danehill as a stallion prospect, we were all well aware of Northern Dancer as a sire and as a sire of sires. We went through

his progeny of sons and went through all his ratios as in Group winners, who were foaled etc. Of all the horses it was Danzig who stood out and in some areas he was more telling then Northern Dancer to a certain extent. We decided a son of Danzig is what we would settle on, we then looked at all his 2 and 3 year olds and, in 1989, we settled on Danehill.

You joined up with Coolmore to purchase

Danehill?

Robert Sangster, who owned a third share in Coolmore, put me in touch with John Magnier and Vincent O’Brien in Ireland and very quickly we decided to link, because they at that stage had no link to Australia and vice versa. They asked whether I was interested in any stallions and I said Danehill. They sounded surprised but looked at Danehill and we decided to go 50/50.

He has proved to be the most fantastic

stallion.

Danehill is the best stallion anywhere. He’s not amazing … he’s beyond amazing.

The link with Coolmore ended fairly soon after

the first ‘link up’.

In 1993 we didn’t see eye to eye on a few things and we went our own way. We had an internal auction and they bought the lots they wanted and we got ours. They have become this huge operation now and we continue to grow.

Looking globally, Frankel, Black Caviar,

So You Think, Uncle Mo etc. Do you think that we are in an age where the quality of horse is getting stronger as a general rule or is it just a boom period?

It is hard to compare generation with generation. I would love to see a 7 furlong

battle between Black Caviar and Frankel. A meet in the middle if you like. I would lean the way of the mare because of her unbelievable early sectionals. So You Think could prove to be a champion in Europe as well as Australia. I am loathe to compare horses through generations because there are different tracks, different training methods and probably not the depth of pedigree that we are experiencing now. We have some wonderful horses right now though.

How do you think racing/breeding has

fared as we push through a global recession?

I don’t think it’s over yet; you only have to go to the sales to see how narrow the market is. As a vendor here we (Arrowfield) took 39 to the Easter sales and it was very hard to sell: it was probably the toughest sale I’ve been to in a decade. The Broodmare sale was the same – a narrow sale with a lot of pass ins. What the recession has done is forced operations like ourselves to reduce stallion fees. For example, Redoute’s Choice has gone from $300,000 to $125,000. Adjustments have had to be made.

In what areas can racing improve?

I think what’s happening is we are resorting to the same old solutions for perennial problems, resorting to the old school ways with the little problems. There is too much racing. We need to

rationalise and present ourselves in a slightly different way. I think we need to have one national body, like in the AFL. They would control all the media rights and not be determined by state rivalries. With regards to prizemoney, owners only recoup 35% of prize money as an average across Australia, which is incredibly low and must improve if we are to have a vibrant industry. Where do you see racing in 20 years

I’m very fearful at the moment. Unless we address these issues I’m fearful racing may be the domain of a few wealthy patrons. I’m sad because right now racing is accessible to the whole country, which is great … it may very well not be that way in the future.

Barring the Asian market, I’m fearful that racing will not be a mainstream sport. It’s very frightening. All our problems are self inflicted and very quickly soluble if you see past state rivalries.

We want to race more internationally: it’s like a great rugby team, if you’re good enough to win a few at home, you want to go overseas. I would love a Royal Ascot winner. My son Paul is now training, he has some nice horses so we will hopefully have a few ready to take on the world. We want to continue to do what we are doing but to do it better, to continually improve. It’s what we always try and do.

On a global scale, how high up would you

place Australian racing?

We can hold our head high. In the past, Australia was a dumping ground for crappy stallions, and now some of the world’s best bloodstock is here. Coolmore and Darley are sending their very best stallions here and that is one indication to the advancement in Australian racing. It’s right up there.

Do you worry how people perceive you

within the industry?

People may resent the fact that I speak my mind. I’m not worried about speaking my mind. I believe I have a responsibility to do so.

ELIZA PARK STALLION Written Tycoon is currently Australian Leading First Season Sire and capped off a memorable Autumn

when his filly from the Bluebird mare Turtle Dove topped the sale at $80,000 … well up on last year’s top price of $65,000.

Purchased by EBA Victoria, the filly is a half-sister to five winners, including Queensland Derby runner-up Lords A Leaping, from the family of New Zealand Derby winner Coniston Bluebird.

Nadeem, the Widden Stud stallion who holds second spot on the first crop sires’ chart was the next highest seller when his Makybe consigned colt from Thor’s Daughter sold for $62,000.

Cranbourne-based trainer Robbie Griffiths was back adding to his stable and he struck early on a shapely colt by Churchill Downs that sold for $55,000.

“He’s a nice colt and looks sharp,” Griffiths said. Fresh from a successful stable open day the previous weekend where he paraded yearlings for current and prospective owners, Griffiths said the day had proven successful. “It’s very pleasing, we had a good turn out and the yearlings were very well received.”

Ever the salesman, the leading trainer added: “We still have some shares available in yearlings so people are welcome to call me and see what we have to get involved in.”

After such a positive result the auctioneers were understandably happy: “This has been a very strong sale,” Inglis Director Peter Heagney said at session end. “There was excellent competition on most horses and the clearance rate is indicative of vendors being satisfied with what buyers were prepared to pay.

“But most notably, we had a lot of new buyers here that we haven’t seen participate previously at Oaklands, which is a tremendous result for everybody.”

Snowden has found an element of calm.

AFORMER COUNTRY j o c k e y , P e t e r Snowden was John Hawkes’ foreman for 14 years until November 2007.

Loyalty to such a level is reasonably common: you just have to look at how many head lads, travelling head lads and grooms have remained in one stable for the entirety of their careers.

In no way does this devalue the relationship and respect both Hawkes and Snowden had for each other. After over a decade as the understudy, Snowden eventually got his name on the door when he took over as head trainer for Bob Ingham’s massive racing operation.

But early in 2008 Snowden was informed that his new boss was Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, principal of Darley Stud. It was revealed Ingham had sold his entire Woodlands racing and breeding set-up for a reported 500 million. Looking on from the outside, it would appear that the transition period that occurred was a smooth and successful operation. It was no doubt anything but.

Peter was in the dream job, at the forefront of a huge racing and bloodstock operation, with a guarantee

of wonderfully bred yearlings coming through the gates year on year.

Bear in mind however, that when it looks easy, invariably it is not. Nerves, trepidation, the constant questioning of whether his way was the right way, would all have ticked over in the early days. Being given such a high profile stable – working for arguably the most important man in racing globally – means that if winners don’t come, if something goes wrong, the world will know. Stressful and nerve-wracking probably doesn’t do it justice.

It didn’t take long for the questions to be answered and the aforementioned trepidation turned almost immediately into success. A first Group One win for Snowden came in April 2008, just a few months after taking over, when Forensics landed the Queen of The Turf Stakes.

For a while it looked as though the former Golden Slipper winner was a better stud proposition then a racing

three year old, but Snowden’s patience ensured the smart filly translated her form at two into her 3YO campaign.

It was “a result for everyone, not just for me but for my staff”, the humble Snowden stated after the win. In the same year Peter also masterminded a successful career for Musket, a three quarter brother to the champion mare Makybe Diva. Musket scored in the Group Two Shannon Stakes over >>

1500m at Randwick and ran sixth, beaten only a length and a half, in the Doncaster Handicap. The early years were fruitful years and the ball that got rolling in 2008 has maintained speed.

Peter’s stats are consistent with top trainers anywhere in the world. Since taking over the reins, at time of writing, Peter has saddled 3962 runners, winning 702 races, finished second 653 times and third on 530 occasions. To further this point, every 6 horses Snowden saddles, there will be a winner. For all that Peter is in an incredibly enviable position given the operation he works for: after all, you can take a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.

Currently residing in Snowden’s yard are two of the most impressive juveniles to race in Australia in recent years.

Sepoy has led the way for the young guns, becoming the first horse in an age to win the Blue Diamond/Golden Slipper

double. If any young horse wanted advice as to how to win a Blue Diamond, then Sepoy would be the finest of teachers.

A soft ground defeat was put to bed when the competitive Golden Slipper field was made to look fairly ordinary by the son of Elusive Quality. Kerrin McEvoy, the man on board Sepoy on both Group One victories, announced before the Golden Slipper: “he (Sepoy) is the best young horse I’ve ever ridden.”

The performance Sepoy produced when completing the final leg of the rare double confirmed McEvoy’s statement.

Fellow 2YO, Helmet, is not as obviously impressive when making a visual assessment of his wins. It would be unfair on both thoroughbreds to compare the pair, although comparisons will naturally be made.

Helmet was tough when winning the Group One Inglis Sires Produce Stakes, having done most of the early work and, when challenged, Helmet put his head down and fought on like all good horses do.

His next Group One win in the Champagne Stakes could not have been more of a contrast. Having established a winning lead at Randwick, Helmet decided to give everyone a scare by veering tremendously inside the final 100 metres.

Many a jockey would have gone out the side door, but not McEvoy who put it down to his “grippy saddle”.

It was enthralling to watch, if slightly panicked. The fact that Helmet could afford to be a child and still win cosily is a great credit to the natural talent possessed.

Helmet’s victory provided Snowden with Sydney’s juvenile triple crown.

As with all trainers, it could not be possible without a team behind the scenes, whose names are never in lights but whose work is indubitably key in the make up for success.

The final word should go to McEvoy. Having experienced life as a jockey at Darley’s flagbearing stable in the United Kingdom, with trainer Saeed Bin Suroor in the Godolphin blue, McEvoy knows what it takes to win.

A champion jockey who is a key cog in the Darley wheel, his talents as a horseman are clear for all to see.

McEvoy recognises Snowden’s talents: “As a trainer, Peter is 100% committed to training winners for Darley … he has a great ability to learn about a horse very quickly and from a jockey’s point of view he makes it very easy,” McEvoy said. “Peter is an incredibly

It is fair to assume that the Darley operation would continue to have winners wherever they run, with or without Peter Snowden. Would they have as many winners? Probably not.

DISSOLVEDIt was one of racing’s great duels of the ‘noughties’. In the cerise corner you had majestic entire, Lonhro, and in the other, the marvelous scrapper Grand Armee.The pair – between them – accumulated 18 Group One victories and would, the field of battle, square up on four occasions for two wins apiece.

ALTHOUGH BOTH hailed from the crop of ’98, Lonhro had 15 starts up his sleeve – including a

Caulfield Guineas-G1 and eight other stakes victories – before Grand Armee raced for the first time in a Newcastle Maiden in September 2002.

The first time they met, was in the 2003 AJC Doncaster Handicap where Lonhro – on the back of five successive wins (including three a Group One level) – was a raging hot favourite for the famous Sydney ‘mile’.

Grand Armee, on the other hand was paying $13, although his form coming into the race was none too shabby: five wins and two placings from his first seven outings.

Ultimately, carrying 6kgs less than Lonhro, Grand Armee recorded his first Group One victory while the mighty black finished fourth – the third and final unplaced run of Lonhro’s career.


COVER STORY

Lonhro exacted revenge some five months later by taking out the George Main Stakes-G1 at Randwick, two and a half panels clear of Grand Armee in second, and repeated the dose in the George Ryder-G1 some 51 weeks after their first meeting, but this time shaving some more off the margin.

All was set for a final showdown at Randwick on 17 April 2004 in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes-G1 – Lonhro’s much publicised last race.

They sent him around a prohibitive favourite - $1.26 – but no-one handed the fairy tale script to Grand Armee who promptly dispatched the departing hero by a whopping six lengths and denying this superstar of the turf a 12th Group One victory.

Grand Armee raced on for one more year, taking out a George Main, a Mackinnon, a Chipping Norton, a Ranvet and a second successive Queen Ellizabeth (all at Group One level) before also having his swansong spoiled by an out of character performance in the rather ironically named Queen Elizabeth Cup-G1 in Hong Kong.

By this time, Lonhro had already gotten off to a promising start at stud – mare wise at least – while Grand Armee discovered a new career as an eventer. No need to note who got the rough end of the pineapple in that deal.

Lonhro is now a constant presence among the leading echelon of Australian sires via the likes of Denman, Obsequ ious , O ’Lonhro ,

Parables, Beaded, Trim, Renaissance and company, but in an inspired breeding decision by Segenhoe Stud, the Grand Lodge mare Yarralumla was one of 138 mares to occupy Lonhro’s days and nights during his second season at stud.

You see, Yarralumla is a winning half sister to Grand Armee and the intent – relatively speaking – was to go as close as possible to cloning two of turf’s powerhouses.

The result was a near black colt that would eventually be called Dissolved

And if looks are anything to go by, Segenhoe was certainly spot on the money when the Lonhro x Yarralumla mating produced a colt, almost the replica of his sire.

Indeed, John Hawkes – who trained sire and would go on to train his athletic son – declared Dissolved to be a “spitting image” of Lonhro.

So much so that Hawkes would pay $300,000 for the privilege of taking the colt home from the 2008 Australian Easter Yearling Sale – the highest price paid for a Lonhro that year.

A few months down the track and Hawkes also declared that the similarities didn’t end with looks alone, finding Dissolved to possess “abundant speed and tremendous potential”.

Only lightly raced, but retiring sound, Dissolved won the Listed Moomba Plate down the straight at Flemington: his third win from five starts and toppling highly rated stakes

winners Rarefied, Avenue and Common Interest in the process.

“The QTIS scheme is essential to the development of racing in Queensland, it creates initiatives for new owners, which are very good in comparison to other states … the 2YO prize-money is amazing,” Morgan said.

A colt by Falvelon topped Session Two when selling for $110,000 to the bid of trainer Pat Duff. The Deagon based trainer spent $367,000 on seven yearlings at the sale.

“This (Lot 518) is a standout colt, a typical Raheen Stud type horse – tough, strong and sound – we believe he will train on and improve,” Duff said. “Our top galloper Hard To Catch was reared from this stud and he won over a million dollars for us – we will target the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic with this colt.”

Next highest price was $100,000 for a colt by Sequalo to the bid of Melbourne based bloodstock agent Cameron Cooke, acting for trainer Tony Gollan and clients.

“He is clearly my pick of the colts at this sale - a real standout, good body, very athletic, correct, and a lovely walker,” said Cooke. “Tony Gollan trained Spirit of Boom, a stakes winner who has won four races, over $300,000 with $63,000 in QTIS bonuses, and this horse is a very similar type to him.”

Cooke went on to say that he is a fan of the QTIS 600 bonus scheme: “My clients will invest in racing anywhere in Australia wherever they see real benefit and great prizemoney incentives. I will keep a share in him, and clients from Melbourne will take shares, we will train and race him in Queensland to take advantage of the great QTIS scheme,” Cooke said.

Magic Millions’ David Chester said he was pleased with the day’s results: “The sale held up very well despite the natural disasters that have badly affected Queensland racing this year.

“The average and clearance are down on last year’s sale, but you need to take into account that we are selling an extra 100 horses in this year’s session, which adds a lot of pressure to the average and clearance rate.”

SYMPTOMS

The early signs include an initial elevated temperature above 39°C, depression and loss of appetite, swollen joints and lower limbs, followed by a lack of coordination and a staggering gait, muscle twitching, and in many horses, hypersensitivity to touch and sound and bouts of colic . In fact, there have been 164 cases of horses reported in NSW, with 16 deaths, in west and southern areas of NSW since February, and a larger number in Victoria long the Murray and Riverland. Often a cluster of cases are reported in a local area, with a range of symptoms from mild to acute in the same stable or locality. Young horses up to 2 years of age and old horses over 18 years of age appear to be the most seriously affected. Pregnant mares are likely to abort and often succumb to the infection.

There have also been a few human cases with the same symptoms.

UNDERLYING CAUSE

Blood testing for antibodies in the affected horses has identified 2 Flaviviruses spread by mosquitoes, Murray Valley Encelphalitis and Kunjin virus. Both are carried by migratory water birds flying south following the water courses after rains in north and central Queensland inland areas and the warm, wet season in the southern states. Domestic poultry can also act as hosts and horses sharing properties and stable and yards with free range poultry are at a higher risk of contracting the viral disease by mosquito spread. The flooded areas and the Murray River and wetlands replenished by the rains act as a magnet for water bird migration and mosquitoes because of the often flat, low, poorly drained areas, along with irrigation and rural dams. The first outbreaks were recorded in 1950-1951 during a very wet season along the Murray River from Albury to Mildura and again in the early 1970’s, hence the name Murray Valley Encephalitis. It is also regularly reported in the Kimberleys of Western Australia during warm wet seasons which favour mosquito spread of the virus. Although Ross River Virus has also been identified in Victoria where it appears annually and is carried by mosquitoes from kangaroos and wallabies as hosts, again it is most common near fresh water reserves in the warmer months.

Another mosquito borne Arbovirus, Japanese Encelphalitis B, has not been identified in the current viral outbreaks. although it is found in Northern Australia during the wet seasons and affects humans, horses and dogs.

Luckily horses are ‘dead end hosts’ for these viruses, meaning that the virus particles in the blood of infected horses are too low to act as a source of infection to other horses and humans being bitten by mosquitoes.

All affected horses have been tested for Hendra virus (spread by flying foxes) with no positives. Virus can develop a serious, fatal illness.

PROMPT THERAPY

Ideally the symptoms should be recognized as early as possible, particularly the staggering gait and hypersensitivity to touch which is characteristic of MVE and Kunjin virus infection, but not of Ross River virus. Prompt supportive therapy with antibiotics to minimise the risk of secondary infection, along with short courses of ‘Bute’ and corticosteroids, such as Preddy Granules, and appetising feeds with warm boiled barley and/or wet Speedibeet, will help to encourage the appetite. Many trainers have given a three week course of a product, such as Activ-8, to help support the immune system and help maintain optimum immune activity. A thorough assessment of horses suffering bouts of colic should be carried out by a vet and administration of IV fluids helps maintain hydration and assists recovery.

Once a horse recovers, they appear to have immunity for at least 12 months but long term immune status is unknown. >>

THERAPY OUTCOMES

Early recognition of the symptoms and supportive veterinary treatment is essential for the recovery of affected horses, which can take up to three weeks. In horses which deteriorate despite treatment, the long term outcome with possible inco-ordination and severe weight loss may reduce their chances of returning to race training and they should be euthanized for humane reasons.

REDUCING THE RISK OF INFECTION

Measures to reduce risk of mozzie attacks on horses are an important way of limiting spread of the viruses. These include covering horses with a full combo light weight rug with a head and tail cover from late afternoon to 8am next morning when mozzies are most active; spraying with long acting mozzie repellants, such as Flygon, and installing mozzie zappers around the stables all help. In a stabled horse, fitting insect screens and letting a fan run overnight to keep the rugged horse more comfortable also prevents mozzie attack as they less likely to land around the bare skin areas of the horse’s eyes, nostrils, mouth and sheath under the breezy conditions created by a fan. Applying a mozzie repellant each evening to bare skin areas, with care around the eyes, is also helps to keep mozzies away. It may be a good idea to fit fly screens to hen houses as they roost overnight as poultry can act as hosts of the viruses.

The number of cases reported has slowed down due to the cooler overnight temperatures and dwindling mozzie numbers. However, if you notice any unusual nervous symptoms in your horses, contact your vet as soon as possible as early intervention and support therapy will minimise the risk of a severe illness.
