    Qutub Minar

    About 15 km south of Delhi, in Mehrauli, this 238 feet and 1 inch high Minar has beenreferred to as "one of the wonders of world". This soaring tower of victory was builtimmediately after the defeat of the last Hindu Kingdom in Delhi. Qutb-ud-din Aibak laidits foundation in 1200 A.D. Iltutmish added three more storeys. After damaged bylightning in 1368 A.D. Firuz Shah Tughlaq rebuilt the fourth story, added the fifth and aharp shaped cupola. A doorway in each storey opens to its own balcony. As of now,upper storeys are closed for visitors, yet its a treat to watch this magnificent travelmastimonument. Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid, Iron Pillar and Alai Gateway are worth having alook.     The Qutub Minar made of red sandstone rising to theheight of 72.5mts is an architectural marvel of the 13thcentury. Also a must is the visit to Ashoka Pillar dating

    back to the 5th century. Though made of iron it haswith stood the weathers of time.A very interesting

    belief is assigned to this pillar- Stand with your back tothe pillar, and if you can hold your hands around it,then make a wish and it will surely come true. Try it!

    You don't have to an archaeologist to find out about the past of your country.Simply visiting historic monuments helps you to understand it & can also leadyou to grab some useful information, you never realized before. A distinct

    present from the past, Qutub Minar has inspired explorers and travelers throughthe ages. Qutb-u'd-Din Aibak laid the foundation of Qutab Minar in AD 1199for the use of Mu'azzin to give calls for prayer and raised the first storey, towhich were added three more storeys by his successor and son-in-law,Shamsu'd-Din Iitutmish.

    Viewing it is a truly surreal experience as Qutub Minar is still the highest stonetower as well as one of the finest Islamic structures ever raised in India. It iscovered with intricate carvings and deeply inscribed verses from the Koran.Beautiful calligraphy adorns the adjacent edifices. The tower has five distinct storeys,each marked by a projecting balcony. The first three storeys are made of red sandstone,the fourth and fifth of marble and sandstone.

    Red Fort

    Red Form, also know Lal Quila, is one of the mostspectacular pieces of Mughal Architecture. Built by theMughal emperor, Shah Jahan between 1638 and 1648, theRed Fort has walls extending up to 2 kms. in length withthe height varying from 18 mts. on the river side to 33mts. on the city side.

    The entry to this splendid fort is from the Lahori Gate or the Chatta Chowk. Lal Quila is now a busy market placecalled the 'Meena Bazaar'. This bazaar has an excellentcollection of antiques, miniature paintings and skillfullycrafted fake ivory jewellery. The bazaar also sells somefabulous carpets beautifully woven. Just beyond the Chhata Chowk, is the heart of thefort called Naubat Khana, or the Drum House. Musicians used to play for the emperor from the Naubat Khana, and the arrival of princes and royalty was heralded from here.

    The Fort sports all the obvious trappings befitting a vital centre of Mughal governance:halls of public and private audiences, domed and arched marble palaces, plush privateapartments, a mosque, and elaborately designed gardens. Even today, the Fort remains animpressive testimony to Mughal grandeur, despite being attacked by the Persian Emperor

    Nadir Shah in 1739, and by the British soldiers, during the war of independence in 1857.

    India Gate This 42 metre high, free standing arch, designed by Lutyens and founded on February 10 1921by the Duke of Connaught, commemorates the 70,000 Indian soldiers whodied during World War I. "Amar Jawan Jyoti", another memorial, addedunder the arch in 1971 is the nation's tribute to Indian Jawans, who laidtheir lives during Indo-Pak War of 1971. The names of the demised soul(soldiers) are inscribed all along the walls of the arch.

    Jama Masjid

    The largest mosque in India, was built by the great Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Begun in 1644and completed finally in 1658 at a cost of ten lakhs of rupees, it has three gateways, four angletowers and two 40 m high minarets. Situated on a rocky eminence in Old Delhi on the other sideof road to the Red Fort. One of the finest Specimen of Mughal structure, its notable features are

    its bold treatment in red sandstone inlaid with black and white marble, spacious courts, massivepillars supporting engrailled arches, elegant bulbous domes - all well proportioned with decorativemanipulation. Spend some time here for some serioustravelmasti pleasures.
