…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Use professional spray equipment that meets or exceeds the following rating when spraying.
High pressure hose – 15m x 9.5mm I.D.
Output – at least 3.8 litres per minute
Pump pressure – 3000 psi capable
Filter - #60 coarse mesh located in the gun, no filter in the machine
Spray Tip – a 519 is generally used, alternatives may be used for different finish effects. See
Application descriptions
An example is a Graco Mk V heavy duty texture airless spray pump or equivalent when frequent use is
anticipated. Smaller options may be suitable for less frequent use.
Ensure that the airless sprayer, hoses, gun and other related equipment are clean and in good working
condition prior to application.
Note: TUFF-HIDE is a high solid coating. For best results use new hoses to avoid clogging at the spray
tip. Clogging commonly occurs with any high solids when old and/or poorly cleaned hoses are used. It
is good practice to not use different type products through the same hose, as this can cause cross-
contamination
Tip : using a “cleanshot “ accessory on the front of the gun minimises likelihood of potential splatter
Equipment – Airless Spray
– Painters Roller Airless spray application is the recommended method to achieve sufficient film build-up for a Level 5
coating over the Level 4 substrate. However TUFF-HIDE may be applied by a roller method to achieve a
high level of finish where Level 5 is not required or it is not practical to use a spray application.
Roller type – 6-13mm nap suitable for applying interior flat latex paints. Nap material and length will
affect the texture level and amount applied. The shorter the roller nap length the smoother the finish, but
there will be less wet film applied. The longer the nap will apply more product, but will also create more
texture.
Surface Preparation Substrate must be sound, dry, clean and free of dust, oil, grease, mildew and efflorescence. Product, air
and surface temperatures must be maintained at a minimum of 13º C throughout the finishing process.
For new plasterboard Treat all joints, fasteners and accessories with a recommended joint treatment
system. Fill all nicks, voids and gouges with joint compound. A minimum Level 4 wallboard finish is
required. Refer to AS/NZS 2589 The Levels of Finish for Gypsum
For concrete and plaster surfaces Plaster surfaces shall be thoroughly dry before application.
Concrete surfaces should age at least 60 days before finishing. Remove all oils and efflorescence and
grind down form lines.
Fill cracks and holes and level concrete surfaces with Sheetrock Brand setting type joint compound
Easy Sand™ or Durabond™, let dry and sand back smooth before application of Tuff-Hide. Not suitable
for use below ground level.
For gypsum fibreboard (USG Fiberock) and fibre cement boards, prefill any voids or joints with joint
compound prior to application. After the compound is dry and all tool marks are sanded smooth, apply
the TUFF-HIDE.
For wood surfaces Paintable grade interior wood (dressed) for trims and MDF should also be suitable
provided any marks or indentations are filled prior. Check on a sample piece first if in doubt.
Undressed timber, plywood etc, because of its rough appearance, is usually unacceptable, unless that
is the desired texture.
Ensure other surfaces are protected from overspray when reqired.
Tinting For pale colour topcoats this is not usually necessary. For deep tones it is advisable to tint TUFF-HIDE
with up to 15ml per litre (280ml / pail maximum) of universal colorants. Ensure it is mixed thoroughly.
Mixing Stir gently. Do not thin. Thinning will reduce performance. Do not intermix with any other products other
than tinters. There should be no lumps or semi-solid agglomerations in TUFF-HIDE. The product may
have a gelled appearance prior to mixing. If a gelled appearance is being mistaken for lumps, stir
thoroughly prior to use or place pails on an orbital paint shaker for 2 minutes before use.

SHEETROCK® Brand
Primer-Surfacer
Application - Airless Spray Spray build up needs to be to a minimum of 0.35 mm Wet Film Thickness (WFT). A WFT greater than
0.5 mm is not recommended. Use a wet film thickness gauge if in doubt. Avoid drafts and maintain a
minimum product, air and surface temperature of 13º C during application and until surface is dry.
Test the spray pattern prior to application. Rate of coverage is controlled by the spray tip size. If the
fan spread is the same, a large tip orifice applies more coating than a smaller tip. A larger tip eg. 0.021 –
0.023 will give a quicker heavier build up but will also result in a more “orange peel” texture. This may
be acceptable but care should be taken in cooler weather as too heavy a build up could result in runs
due to slower drying conditions. A smaller tip size 0.019 gives a smoother finisher more suitable for
residential expectations but may require more passes to get the recommended build up. Do not try to
increase coverage by increasing pressure. Use the lowest pressure necessary (high pressure increases
pump wear). Best results are around 2200 – 2400 psi while spraying.
Hold the gun perpendicular to the surface, approximately 750-900mm (for a 519 tip). Move the gun
parallel to the surface at a steady rate. Start the stroke off the “target” surface and pull the trigger as the
gun is moving. At the end of the stroke do not release the trigger but use a slight flicking motion off the
area before commencing the return pass. This will avoid excess build up and minimise clogging of the
tip due to stop/starting constantly. Moving the gun at a constant correct speed will deposit a full, wet
coating without runs or sag. Lap each stroke approximately 50% over the previous stroke for uniform
paint thickness. Spray from side to side for the initial scratch coat then crosshatch spray up and down
as the doubleup coat to provide a uniform appearance. This is visually achieved when there is an even
gloss level visible over the surface ie no dull patches.
When painting corners aim the gun toward the centre of the corner and twist on an angle to avoid
tracking lines on both surfaces.
A typical 230mm roller with the recommended nap length would normally cover an area approximately
600 x 600mm. Do not exceed that spreading rate. Use rolling technique as for paint to ensure an even
coating is applied.
Depending on desired level of smoothness/texture, several applications may be necessary. Lightly sand
between coats once dry to reduce build-up of texture.
It is highly recommended to apply a test area first for acceptability by the specifier/owner before
widespread work is conducted.

Drying Time Dries to touch in approximately 60-90 minutes when applied at 0.35 – 0.5mm WFT (0.23 – 0.3 DFT)
under normal drying conditions (25°C/50% RH). Let dry before recoating. High humidity and/or cold
temperature will slow drying. May be painted after overnight drying (approximately 16 hours).
Coverage Coverage is approximately 2.0 – 3.0 m² per litre (40-52 m² / pail) when applied at 0.35 – 0.5mm WFT
(0.23 – 0.3 DFT). Actual coverage can vary depending on factors such as substrate surface condition,
spray techniques, procedures, coating uniformity and thickness.
Clean Up Wipe up drips and spills immediately with a damp cloth. Clean tools and equipment with warm soapy
water. Clean and store airless spray equipment per the spray manufacturer’s recommendations. Clean
roller sleeve with water as for paint products. Close container after each use.
Touch Up For damage before painting, fill and level all nicks, voids, protrusions, paper tears etc with joint
compound and sand smooth. For areas with minor damage, spray TUFF-HIDE over repaired area and
blend into surrounding coated surface using a feathering technique. For small areas not requiring
respraying, apply TUFF-HIDE using a small touch-up roller with a 10mm nap and feather out to match
the texture (this usually blends well with the texture from a 0.019 spray tip). For larger repaired areas,
it may be necessary to re-spray the entire wall or ceiling surface.
For damage to painted surfaces, make sure surface is sound and free of loose or flakey paint, dirt,
oils, stains or other contaminants. (Stains may require a stain blocking sealer). Repair damage as
above and lightly sand back painted surface to give a good bond prior to re-application to the entire
wall or ceiling surface.
