    Hot swapping

One of the great things about PC Cards is that you canreplace one PC Card with another while the computer is on.This is called hot swapping.

    Hot swapping precautions

Although you can insert a PC Card at any time, remember notto remove a card while it is in use. Otherwise, you could losevaluable information.

For example: Never remove a hard disk card or CD-ROM drive card

while the system is accessing the card.

Never remove a network card while you are connected tothe network.

Before removing a PC Card, stop it by clicking the PC Card(PCMCIA) icon on the taskbar.

Computing tips Save your work frequently.

Your work temporarily stays in the computers memoryuntil you save it to the disk. You will lose all unsavedwork, if, for example, a system error occurs and you must

restart your computer, or your battery runs out of chargewhile you are working. Your computer can be configuredto warn you when the battery is running low. See Settingbattery alarms on page 45.

HINT: Some programs have an automatic save feature that you canturn on. This feature saves your file to the hard disk at presetintervals. See your software documentation for details.

Back up your files to a removable storage media on aregular basis. Label the backup copies clearly and storethem in a safe place.

Scan all new files for viruses.

Never turn off the computer if a drive indicator lightindicates a drive is active.

The operating system records information, such as your desktop

setup, during its shutdown procedure. If you do not let the operatingsystem shut down normally, details such as new icon positions maybe lost.

Using the TouchPadThe TouchPad, the small, smooth square cutout located infront of the keyboard, is sensitive to touch and enables you tomove the cursor with the stroke of a finger. Simply moveyour finger on the TouchPad in the direction you would liketo move the cursor:

To move the cursor to the top of the page, push yourfinger forward on the TouchPad.

To move the cursor to the bottom of the page, drag yourfinger toward yourself.

To move the cursor to the right side of the page, slide

your finger across the TouchPad from left to right. To move it to the left side, slide your finger from right to

    left.

For more information on the TouchPad, see the electronicusers guide.

Using primary and secondary control buttonsWhen you want to click or choose an item, use the TouchPad

to move the pointer/cursor to the item. Once the pointer/cursor is positioned, you can click it into place by eitherdouble-tapping the TouchPad or clicking the control buttons.

The control buttons are adjacent to the TouchPad and are usedlike the buttons on a mouse. The primary control button is theleft one and corresponds to the left mouse button. To double-click, press the primary button twice in rapid succession.

The function of the secondary button depends on the programyou are using. It usually corresponds to the right mousebutton. Check your programs documentation to find whetherit uses the secondary mouse button.

Optical storage has become the preferred medium forsoftware, music, and video. Digital versatile discs (DVDs)provide a significant increase in data storage and supportfeatures that are not available on any other video platform. These features include wide-screen movies, multiplelanguage tracks, digital surround sound, multiple cameraangles, and interactive menus.

For these reasons, your computer may come with an optionalexternal DVD-ROM drive or multi-function drive.

TECHNICAL NOTE: Your DVD-ROM or multi-function drive is set toplay region 1 (North America) DVD-ROMs. If you play a DVD discfrom another region, the drive will automatically change to play inthe format of the other region. The drive will allow you to changeregions four times. On the fourth change, the region will be lockedin. That is, the drive will only play DVDs from that last region. Notethat changing from region 1 to region 2 and back to region 1 is

    counted as two changes.

For optimum DVD performance, it is recommended that you playDVDs while running the computer on AC power.

To attach this drive to your computer using an optional PCCard SCSI adapter, follow the instructions in Inserting a PCCard on page 37. To attach this drive to your computer usingthe USB port, follow the instructions below.

Running the computer on battery powerThe computer contains a removable Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion)battery pack that provides power when you are away from anAC outlet. This is the main battery. You can recharge it manytimes.

Battery life may vary considerably from specificationsdepending on product model, configuration, applications,

power management settings and features utilized, as well asthe natural performance variations produced by the design ofindividual components. Published battery life numbers areachieved on select models and configurations tested byToshiba at the time of publication. See Detailed Specs forspecific battery measurement test. Recharge time variesdepending on usage. Battery may not charge while thecomputer is consuming full power.

After a period of time, the battery will lose its ability toperform at maximum capacity and will need to be replaced. This is normal for all batteries. To purchase a new batterypack, see your accessories information that shipped with yourcomputer, or visit the Toshiba Web site atwww.accessories.toshiba.com.

To ensure that the battery maintains its maximum capacity, operate the computer on battery power at least once a monthuntil the battery is fully discharged. Please see Maximizingbattery life on page 48 for procedures. If the computer iscontinuously operated on AC power, either through an ACadapter or a docking station (if applicable to your system), foran extended period (more than a month) the battery may failto retain a charge. This may shorten the life of the battery, and the battery light may not indicate a low-battery condition

The RTC battery powers the System Time Clock and BIOSmemory used to store your computers configuration settings. When fully charged, it maintains this information for up to amonth when the computer is powered off.

The above error message may vary by computer model.

The RTC battery does not charge while the computer is turned offeven when the AC adapter is charging the computer.

Monitoring battery powerThe computers main battery light gives you an indication ofthe main batterys current charge:

Green indicates the AC adapter has fully charged thebattery.

Amber indicates the AC adapter is charging the battery. Does not glow if the external power source is

disconnected or if the battery is completely discharged.

TECHNICAL NOTE: The computer drains the battery faster at lowtemperatures. Check your remaining charge frequently if you areworking in temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

The computer calculates the remaining battery charge based on your

current rate of power use and other factors such as the age of thebattery.

TECHNICAL NOTE: When your computer is using all of the powerprovided by the AC adapter to run applications, features, anddevices, the recharging of the battery cannot occur. Your computer'sPower Saver utility can be used to select a power level setting thatreduces the power required for system operation and will allow thebattery to recharge.

Flashing amber indicates that the computer is usingbattery power, and the batterys charge is running low.

HINT: Be careful not to confuse the battery light ( ) with the on/offlight ( ). When the on/off light flashes amber, it indicates that thesystem is suspended (using Windows XP Standby command).
