These days, there is no lack of wood carving gouges and chisels which are specifically been made for the woodcarvers to carve up woods with finer shapes and details. Some tools are available for manual carving but some tools are made to shape and carve large wooden blocks. On wood sculpture, a lot of details are given by several gouges, which can be V-shaped, U-shaped, spoon-shaped and fishtail-shaped. These gouges have medium, shallow or deep arcs on the edges. Their sizes can be from 1/8 inch to around 3 ½”. Each tool for wood carving is made for different functions. Use bent chisels and gorges to shred deep hollows.

Palm Tools

Wood carvers also use palm tools to carve softer wood or smaller pieces of wood. These tools are smaller variant of bigger chisels and gorges. They can use their own force to drive these tools. These tools have bulbous and straight handles in order to help in holding and grasping the carving tools. Basically, the palm tools are widely used by beginners. When it comes to work on softer wood, carvers use these tools.
