INTRODUCTION

PURPOSE:

FOUNDATIONS provides an overview of the Missionary church. These lessons include studies of doctrinal truths, historical background, and practical Christian living.

OVERVIEW:

The Scripture translation used in this course is the New International Version (NIV). The Articles of Faith are taken from the Constitution. Where the article is long, it has been adapted.

A glossary is provided in the back of the worksheets. The worksheets can be completed either before or during the class session.

TEACHER'S EDITION:

This teacher's edition contains a completed copy of the worksheets as well as other helpful teaching suggestions.

Each lesson begins with the lesson aim. Keep it in mind as you work through the lesson. Selected Scripture passages, found only in the teacher's edition, will help you prepare the lesson.

Do not let the lesson outline limit you. Use your creativity. You know your students. Look for the best possible way of communicating with them.

TEACHING RESOURCES:

Merging Streams is a history of the Missionary Church. The Constitution of the Missionary Church contains the exact wording of the Articles of Faith, as well as a description of the entire church organization. Backward Glance is a video presentation of the history of the Missionary Church up to 1969.

Merging Streams and the Constitution of the Missionary Church are available from ChurchMART, 1-800-223-0001. Backward Glance is available from Discipling Ministries, 1-260-747-2027, Extension 211.

THE BIBLE

ARTICLE OF FAITH

We believe that the Bible, consisting of the entire sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments, is the Word of God given by divine inspiration, is inerrant in the original manuscripts, and remains the unchanging authority in matters of Christian faith and practice.

REVELATION

The Bible is God’s revelation to us. People who were guided in their communication by the Holy Spirit wrote it. God directed them in collecting and selecting the material they wrote and in the very words they used. The final product was actually God’s Word, not that of any person. The Bible as recorded by the writers was, therefore, without error.

What does the Bible say about all of God’s words?

Psalm 119:160 They are true, eternal

Proverbs 30:5 They are flawless

Titus 1:2 They are not lies

What is the difference between the way the Bible was produced and the way other writings are created?

II Peter 1:21 The Bible was written under the influence of the Holy Spirit.

What is the Holy Spirit, who inspired the biblical text, called?

John 14:17 Spirit of truth

John 15:26 Spirit of truth

John 16:13 Spirit of truth

What is the Word of God called?

II Timothy 2:15 word of truth

John 17:17 truth

AIM: To show that the Bible can be completely trusted

MATERIALS NEEDED: Salt shaker containing sugar; 7-Up bottle filled with water; magazine with wrong cover; canned food with wrong label; Band-Aid box with Band-Aids; “From God to Us” overhead transparency.

SCRIPTURE: II Timothy 3:16; II Peter 1:21;Psalm ll9:l-6

LESSON OUTLINE:

I. INTRODUCTION

A. Display items that are not actually what they appear to be and one item that is real.

1. Salt shaker with sugar2. 7-Up bottle with water3. Magazine with wrong cover4. Food with wrong label5. Band-Aid box containing Band-Aids

Explain that only one item is really what we would expect. Have students indicate (true/false) whether they believe each item is real or not. Then see who guessed correctly.

B. Discussion

1. Did you have any doubt about the items at first?

2. Did you have any way of knowing which one was real?

3. What are some other things that we see every day which could be false?

4. What about the Bible? How can we know whether or not it is true?

II ARTICLE OF FAITH

A. Read in unison.

B. Define unfamiliar terms.

III. REVELATION

A. Activity

Without any instruction, have students write a brief description of a familiar object. Have them share the descriptions. Note the diversity. Then have them write another description of the same object, this time telling them to mention color, size shape and weight of the object. Now compare descriptions again. Note the similarities. Ask them what difference the instructions made.

The Holy Spirit guided the writers of the Bible, thus providing continuity to the Scriptures while sustaining the writer’s individual styles.

B. Fill in the blanks and discuss.

Sample discussion question: What does it mean to you that the Bible is true?

4

INSPIRATION

The word “God-breathed” in the New International Version (NIV) is translated “inspired” in the King James Version. The idea behind the word is that all of Scripture, even the very words used in the original writings as they came from the hands of the various writers, is breathed out by God and is useful for equipping the child of God (II Timothy 3:16-17).

What did Jesus identify as the Scriptures of His day?

Luke 24:44-45 the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms

Jesus said that when He ascended to the Father, He would send the Holy Spirit Who would teach all things and remind His disciples of everything He had said (John 14:25-26).

From whom did the Holy Spirit obtain the material He passed on to the New Testament writers?

John 16:12-15 God

Although the apostles and their representatives actually recorded the words, the Bible is as much God’s Word as though Jesus had spoken it directly. These New Testament writings are Scripture the same as the Old Testament books are Scripture (II Peter 3:15-16).

ILLUMINATION

The Holy Spirit helps believers understand God’s Word. This is called illumination. It is different from revelation and inspiration, which ceased with the last biblical writer.

The Bible is a divine, not a human, explanation of things. Holy men borne along by the Holy Spirit wrote the Holy Scripture. The final result is God’s Word in human language.

How are we to use the Bible ?

Psalm 119:15 meditate on it

Matthew 4:4 live on every word that comes from God (includes Scripture)

How should we receive the Bible?

I Thessalonians 2:13 as the words of God

A. Lecture using “From God to Us” overhead transparency.

1. Inspiration - Summarize content from student worksheet.

2. Canonization -Canonicity refers to how the Bible received its acceptance. It deals with the recognition and collection of the God-inspired, authoritative books of Scripture. The word “canon” comes from a Greek word which originally meant “a measuring rod.” Later it came to have a metaphorical meaning of “standard” or “norm” by which the books claiming authority were measured. The early church applied the following principles as it sought to establish canonicity.

a. AuthoritativeIt must have been evident that it came with the authority of God. It must have had the “ring” of authority, not a fanciful or hollow “ring.”

b. PropheticIt must have been written by a man of God. In the Old Testament this was a prophet. In the New Testament it was an apostle or one who had apostolic authority.

c. AuthenticIt must have told the truth about God and man in a way that was consistent with previously known revelation. It must have represented things as they were.

d. DynamicIt must have come with the life-transforming power of God. Its message must have been backed by the might of God.

e. AcceptedIt must have been received, collected, read, circulated, and quoted by the people of God. The acceptance must have been general, not limited.

While the early church wrestled with the issue of canonicity, we must not assume that canonicity was determined by the church. Ultimately, canonicity was

determined by God. The people of God, guided by the Holy Spirit, affirmed the canon. It is the task of the Holy Spirit to confirm the reality of God's Word to His people.

3. Transmission - The earliest books of the Old Testament Scriptures were penned about fifteen centuries before Christ. Since most of us cannot read Hebrew and Greek, we must depend on translators to give us the Scripture in the English language. William Tyndale gave the world the first complete copy of the New Testament in English in 1380 A.D. Since that time, the Bible has appeared in many versions and editions. It will always be necessary to produce updated or new versions of the Bible, because English is a living language that constantly changes.

Led by the Holy Spirit, people of God have copied, translated, recopied, and retranslated the Scriptures many times. Through this process, the Scriptures have been transmitted from the earliest original manuscripts to the printed copies we are privileged to have and use.

B. Fill in the blanks and discuss. Sample discussion questions:

If the Bible is inspired by God, we need to respect it. How should we show respect?

Some people say we should never put another book on top of the Bible. How do you feel about this?

5

The Bible, God’s Word in human language, has God’s authority behind it regarding all matters on which it speaks. Jesus and His apostles accepted Scripture as the final authority for both belief and practice. We must accept whatever is written in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. We must let God’s Word transform our minds and direct all aspects of our existence.

What are our obligations concerning God’s Word?

II Timothy 2:2 teach it

II Timothy 2:15 correctly handle it

II Timothy 4:2 preach it

What are the rewards for living according to the Bible’s teachings?

In this life?

Psalm 119:9 purity

Psalm 19:7-11 revives the soul, makes wise the simple, warns

In the life to come?

John 5:24 eternal life

SUMMARY

Revelation had to do with the communication of truth, and inspiration with the recording of truth. Illumination helps Christians understand the truth. All three operations are the work of the Holy Spirit.

V. ILLUMINATION

BIBLE STUDY

WHY WE STUDY THE BIBLEThe Bible is God’s personal communication to us and the source of our spiritual growth. “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good” (I Peter 2:2-3). God provided us with His Word. The more we use it, the more we will grow to be like Him.

How is Bible study profitable?

Psalm 119:11 It keeps us from sin.

Psalm 119:98 It makes us wiser than our enemies.

Psalm 119:104 It helps us gain understanding.

Psalm 119:105 It gives us light for our path.

Mark 12:24 It keeps us from error.

John 5:39 It testifies about Jesus.

II Timothy 3:15-17 It makes us wise and equips us for good works.

Hebrews 4:12 It penetrates and judges our thoughts and attitudes.

HOW TO STUDY THE BIBLEIt is important to have a specific time and place for daily Bible study. Select a version or translation of the Bible that you like. When you want more information or need help, other resources are available. These include additional Bible versions or translations, as well as, Bible dictionaries, atlases, handbooks, concordances, and commentaries.

AIM. To demonstrate a method of Bible study

MATERIALS NEEDED: “Office memo,” “How the Bible is Organized,” “Three-Step Discovery Method,” and “Psalm 23” overhead transparencies; Three-Step Discovery Method work sheets; sample resource books

One Bible study method that many people find helpful is the Three-Step Discovery Method.

Step 1: Observation - What does it say?

Read the Scripture passage carefully.Give a title to the passage.Record your observations.Ask: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?Write a key word which describes the passage.

Step 2: Interpretation - What does it mean?

Ask what message God is trying to give you.Underline key words and phrases.Paraphrase (put into your own words) the passage.Put the basic thought into one sentence.List truths and principles you discover.Find additional Scriptures which have the same key words.

Step 3: Application - What should I do?

List ways you can apply what you learned from this passage.Choose the one you will put into practice this week.

C. The Three-Step Discovery Method

Go through the Three-Step Discovery Method with your students, using the following outline and the overhead transparency. Have students list the sub-points in the worksheets under the appropriate headings.

USING THE THREE-STEP DISCOVERY METHOD

Note: Remind students that not all questions apply to every passage.

1. Step one: Observation

a. Read the Scripture passage carefully.

b. Give a title to the passage.

c. Record your observation. Ask: Who? What? Where? Why? How?

d. Write a word that describes the passage.

THE HOLY SPIRIT AND BIBLE STUDY

The Holy Spirit helps us understand God’s Word. His help, called “illumination,” is the key to all Bible study.

Read the following verses and. list ways the Holy Spirit helps us understand the Scriptures.

John 14:26 teach and remind

John 16:13-15 guide

According to I Corinthians 2:12:

Who sent the Holy Spirit? God

Why have we received the Holy Spirit?so that we may understand what God has freely given us

SUMMARYThe Bible is God’s only written communication to us. To know Him better, we must know His Word. As we study the Bible, the Holy Spirit helps us understand it.

IV. THE HOLY SPIRIT AND BIBLE STUDY

A. Fill in the blanks.

B. Lecture

The Bible is a very special book. Although it has the authority of God, the Bible itself cannot save us. The Jews searched the Scriptures diligently thinking that in them they could find eternal life. Jesus pointed out that it was the purpose of the Scriptures to tell about Him, not to give life to the reader. He further stated that when He returned to the Father, the Spirit would speak about Him.

The Holy Spirit inspired the holy men of God to prepare God's Word in written form. Through these Scriptures, we learn that salvation was prepared by the Father and carried out by the Son. It is the work of the Holy Spirit to help us understand the hidden depths of God's purposes.

Paul pointed out in I Corinthians that only the person who has the Spirit can know all God has given us. Without the Spirit's help we would not have sufficient insight to know the truth about God. Thus, we should ask for the illuminating power of the Holy Spirit whenever we study the Scriptures.

V. SUMMARY

A. Assignment

1. Distribute copies of the Three-Step Discovery Method worksheets from the worksheets.

2. Ask students to work through John 10:1-18 and be ready to report next week. (Optional)

PRAYER

WHAT IS PRAYER?

Prayer is talking to God and listening to God. Jesus gave us a model prayer (Matthew 6:9-13). It is usually called the “Lord's Prayer,” but a better name for it might be the “Believer’s Prayer.”

Using Matthew 6:9-13, answer the following questions.

How are we to address God? “Our Father in heaven…”

How are we to approach God? reverently

What are we to request from God?

forgiveness, deliverance from the evil one and for daily bread

God loves us as His children and He desires our fellowship. He is to be approached with reverence, respect, awe, and worship. God wants to be our King and desires us to be His obedient subjects. We should pray that His rule over our lives may be increased, and that His rule over all people may become a reality. God has a will and purpose for each person. When we pray "Your will be done," we are asking that His will be fulfilled in our lives and that His purposes be worked out in history.

God wants to meet every need we have. We ask for forgiveness because God wants to cleanse us and restore us to Himself. We ask for guidance because God wants to lead us in His way. We ask for deliverance because evil and the evil one (Satan) are very strong and will overcome us without God's power to help us.

Without God we are powerless; therefore, all glory rightfully belongs to Him

AIM: To study the Bible teachings on prayer as a basis for a meaningful devotional life

WHY SHOULD WE PRAY?

Prayer should be as natural to the Christian as breathing is. When we pray, we maintain fellowship with our loving Father. God hears and answers our prayers.

Why should we pray?

Matthew 26:41 to resist temptation

I Timothy 2:1-2 to have peaceful and quiet lives

James 4:2, 3 to have what we need

James 5:16 to be healed

WHEN SHOULD WE PRAY?

Paul told us to pray ceaselessly. Although prayers are offered at special times such as worship services, prayer meetings, and private and family devotional periods, we should be conversing with our Father at all other times with our minds, our hearts, and our spirits (Philippians 4:6-7; Ephesians 5:19-20).

On what specific occasions should we pray (James 5:13-16)?

When we are in trouble; when we are happy; when we have sinned; when we are sick

HOW SHOULD WE PRAY?

The name of Jesus has great authority in Heaven. We pray in that Name, asking God to hear us for His Son’s sake (John 14:12-14; 15:14-17).

What other conditions are attached to God’s promise that He will hear and answer our prayers?

Psalm 66:18 We must have no sin in our hearts.

Mark 11:24 We are to believe that we will receive it.

I John 5:14 We are to pray according to God’s will.

What else does the Bible say about how we should pray?

Matthew 6:5-6 We should engage in private prayer.

Matthew 6:7-8 We should not use meaningless words.

Luke 11:5-10 We are to pray persistently.

WHAT ARE SOME TYPES OF PRAYER?

Adoration - praising God for His greatness and glory

Confession - admitting our sin and receiving His forgiveness

Thanksgiving - thanking God for answered prayer and blessings

Supplication (sometimes referred to as petition) - asking God to meet our needs

Intercession - asking God to meet the needs of others

We should practice all of these types of prayer. It is important to begin with adoration and continue through confession. Then we can thank God for His goodness and mercy. Finally, we ask God for what He wills to give us, and we intercede for others.

SUMMARYPrayer brings rest (Psalm 23)Prayer provides peace (Matthew 11:28)Prayer is sometimes wrestling (Colossians 4:12)

Prayer is a great privilege and responsibility of the Christian.

VI. WHAT ARE SOME TYPES OF PRAYER?

A. “Five Kinds of Prayer” transparency.

B. Lecture

Adoration - praising God for His greatness end gloryAdoration is an expression of allegiance to God, indicating reverence, respect, and honor. It is a pledge of love, devotion, and high honor. Example: “We acknowledge that You are the Creator of all that has bean made. The whole earth is full of Your glory.”

Confession - admitting our sin and receiving His forgivenessConfession includes an admission of one's sins and owning up to one's guilt. We tell God about our failures so we can receive His gracious forgiveness. Confession can also mean affirming our faith. Example: “We have followed our own way rather than the paths You call us to go. Forgive our selfish pride.”

Thanksgiving - thanking God for answered prayer and blessingsWhen we give thanks to God, we acknowledge in a formal expression of gratitude what we have received from Him and what He has done for us. Example: “You have given us more blessings than we can count. Accept our thanks for these expressions of Your loyal love.”

Supplication - asking God to meet our needs A supplication is a request for God to act on our behalf. It can be for something He may give us or some act He may do for us. Example: “We ask that You grant us the insight from Your Word that we need for this hour.”

Intercession - asking God to meet the needs of othersWhen we intercede for others, we approach God on their

behalf. We plead with God to meet their needs or act in their lives. Example: “We ask You to give power and freedom to Your servants who are declaring the gospel in other lands and cultures. May today be a great harvest day.”

III. SUMMARY

WHO IS GOD?

ARTICLE OF FAITH

We believe that the one and only true God is Spirit: self-existent, infinite, personal, unchangeable, and eternal in His being; perfect in holiness, love, justice, goodness, wisdom, and truth; omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent; Creator and Sustainer of all things, visible and invisible; both immanent and transcendent to creation; eternally existent in three persons, one in substance and co-equal in power and glory- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

THE EXISTENCE OF GOD

The Bible tells us much about God, but it never tries to prove that He exists. Instead, the Bible assumes that God is.

Moses recognized God’s existence (Exodus 3:6). Jesus stated that anyone who had seen Him had seen the Father (John 14:9). Paul began his letter with thanksgiving to God Who was personal and real to him (II Timothy 1:12).

Although logical arguments for the existence of God can encourage belief, arguments cannot prove God’s existence. The infinite God is beyond logical proof by finite human beings.

How do we accept the existence of God?

Hebrews 11:6 by faith

Who refuses to accept the existence of God?

Psalm 14:1 a fool

How does God reveal Himself to us?

Psalm 19:1 through the orderly universe

John 5:39 through the Scriptures

John 14:9 through Christ

Romans 1:19-20 through creation

I Corinthians 2:9-10 through the Holy Spirit

THE TRINITY

Christians believe in one God (Deuteronomy 6:4; Mark 12:28-29), Who exists in the persons of God the Father (Matthew 6:9), God the Son (I John 5:20), and God the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:3-4).

The Trinity can be described as God existing as one being, yet as three persons. The three states of water may help us understand this concept. It is water when it is a liquid, it is water when it is frozen, and it is water even when it is steam.

SUMMARY

It is difficult for a person to understand a being who is all-powerful, all knowing, everywhere present, and eternally existent. Human beings cannot completely understand God. What we do know about God demonstrates the importance of our allegiance to Him through faith and assures us that we can have fellowship with Him.

VII. TRINITY

A. Lecture using “God” transparency.

When studying the Trinity, we must acknowledge that it is an area of great mystery. No one can fully comprehend God. To do that we would need to be as great as God. At best, we can only approach an understanding.

One of the clearest statements on the Trinity is found in the Athanasian Creed “We worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity; neither confounding the Persons, nor dividing the substance. For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Ghost but the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost is all one, the glory equal, the majesty coeternal.”

The Scripture clearly teaches that there is only one God, who is one in substance and one in essence. The Scripture also teaches that God is a Trinity. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are addressed as God and affirmed as God. The Trinity is evident in the baptism of Jesus, the baptismal formula in Matthew 28:19, and in several other Scriptures. The divine Persons are not separate individuals. They share the same nature and substance.

Since we associate persons with separate bodies when we speak about one another, it is difficult for us to conceive of the Persons of the Trinity without the idea of separateness. Our faith affirms that God is of one substance, that in the unity of this substance there are Three Persons, and that this must be held in such a way as to not confuse the Persons or divide the substance.

JESUS CHRIST: HIS PERSON AND WORK

ARTICLE OF FAITH

We believe in the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ; in His eternal generation from the Father; in His Incarnation by which He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, thus uniting the divine and human natures in their completeness into the one unique person of Jesus Christ; in His sinless life and miraculous works; in His vicarious death to make atonement for the sins of the world; in His bodily resurrection and ascension to the right hand of the Father; in His sovereign power and lordship; in His present mediatorial ministry as the believer’s Advocate; in His imminent coming in power and glory.

INCARNATION

“Incarnation” means that Jesus Christ was God in human flesh (John 1:14).

What was unique concerning Christ’s conception that made Him both God and man? (Luke 1:26-35)

God – conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin

Man – born of a human mother

How does the New Testament depict the humanity of Christ?

Matthew 4:2 hunger

Matthew 8:24 needed sleep

John 4:6 experienced weariness

John 4:7 thirsty

John 11:35 wept

John 12:27 was troubled

John 19:25 had a mother

Hebrews 2:14 had flesh and blood

Hebrews 4:15 was tempted

AIM: To understand who Christ is and what He has done

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 1:18-25; Hebrews 1:1-3; John 1:1-3, 14

B. Define unfamiliar terms.

III. INCARNATION

A. Activity

1. Have each student write a newspaper headline announcing Christ's birth.

2. Have students share.

a. Lecture

The term “incarnation” means “in the flesh.” It is used to refer to the human body in which Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Jesus was God in the flesh. Even though Jesus became man at a point in tine, He did not relinquish His oneness with God.

In the Gospels, the human Jesus was tempted as all humans are tempted, yet He did not sin (Hebrews 4:15).

He associated with sinners, grieved with them over their condition, and forgave sin in those who came to faith. He offered Himself on the cross for the sins of others.

The incarnation of Jesus was accomplished through the miracle of the virgin birth. This special birth set in motion God's activity in salvation. The New Testament does not explain the significance of the virgin birth, but shows that Jesus was a unique person.

What powers and claims of Jesus demonstrated His divinity?

Matthew 4:23-24 healed diseases

Matthew 9:4 knew people’s thoughts

Mark 1:22 taught with authority

Mark 2:10-12 had authority to forgive sins

John 1:3 is the Creator

John 8:58 existed before Abraham

John 10:18 had authority to lay down His live

John 11:25-27 granted eternal life

John 20:31 eternal life is available in His name

Even Jesus’ enemies understood those claims. They put Him to death, not for being a good man, but because of His claim to deity. We cannot accept Jesus as merely a good human teacher, for He clearly claimed to be God. We must accept Him as the one and only God-man, Who met the needs of fellow humans, took on Himself the penalty for our sin, and arose from the dead.

VICARIOUS ATONEMENT

Vicarious atonement, or substitutionary atonement, means Jesus Christ died in the place of every person. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and deserve to be punished for sin (Romans 3:23; 6:23). Vicarious atonement is unique to Christianity. It is a gift of God to everyone who believes on His son. Every other religion is a “do it yourself” system based on human effort.

Why is the sacrifice of Jesus acceptable for our sin?

I Peter 2:22, 24 sinless and without deceit

II Corinthians 5:21 he who had no sin was made to be sin for us

Hebrews 9:22, 28 became the sacrifice for us

Because Jesus never sinned, He could be a sin offering for our sin by shedding His blood.

Why did Jesus come to earth?

Matthew 20:28 to serve and give His life as a ransom for many

Luke 19:10 to seek and save the lost

John 8:28 to speak of that which His Father had taught Him

John 10:10 to give abundant life

I John 3:5 to take away our sin

RESURRECTION

Our hope for life after death rests on the resurrection of Christ from the dead (I Corinthians 15:17-23). His resurrection is described in the Bible as the “first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.” This means that, because Christ was resurrected, those who follow Him in faith will also be resurrected (I Peter 1:3).

We believe in the resurrection for several reasons. The empty tomb and the eyewitness reports of those who saw Jesus alive after His crucifixion are major reasons (I Corinthians 15:3-8; Luke 24:3). In addition, the sudden courage of the Disciples after their cowardice at the crucifixion, as well as the founding and growth of the church since Jesus was on earth, can best be explained by the resurrection (Luke 24:5-53; Acts 8:1-4). Most important, the resurrection demonstrates that Jesus was God as He claimed to be.

THE HOLY SPIRIT

ARTICLE OF FAITH

We believe that the Holy Spirit, the third person of the triune God, proceeding from the Father and sent by the Son, is one substance, majesty, and glory with the Father and the Son, very and eternally God. His office and work is to reprove or convict the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment; to regenerate such as repent of their sins and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ; to sanctify, endue with power, teach, guide, and comfort the believer.

PENTECOST

The word Pentecost literally means fifty days. It refers to the event that happened fifty days after the resurrection of Jesus. On that day the eternal Holy Spirit came to live in believers in a new way.

What promise of Jesus was fulfilled on Pentecost (John 14:16)?Jesus’ promise to send the Holy Spirit was fulfilled on Pentecost.

What did believers receive when the Holy Spirit came (Acts 1:8)?When the Holy Spirit came, believers received power.

WHO THE HOLY SPIRIT IS

What are some names given to the Holy Spirit?

Genesis 1:2 Spirit of God

John 16:7 Counselor

III. PENTECOST

A. Lecture

The festival of Pentecost (sometimes called the “Feast of Weeks”) marked the conclusion of the wheat harvest. It was held fifty days from the Sabbath following Passover. In the book of Acts, Pentecost took on a new meaning. With the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the church was prepared to carry the gospel to the ends of the earth.

Peter indicated in Acts 2 that the Spirit's coming was a fulfillment of the prophecy of Joel. Many people interpret the outpouring of the Spirit as the birth of the Church. The

Spirit’s presence in the Church was evident In the new community. It grew rapidly and developed a quality of life marked by power to heal, courage to witness and strength to grow in love, joy and hope. The unity of the church after Pentecost was remarkable.

The frightened little band of disciples was transformed into a powerful force for God at Pentecost. Supernatural signs were displayed when the Spirit was given, but the most convincing proof that the disciples were filled with the spirit was their obedience in carrying forward the commission of Jesus in spite of great opposition.

B. Fill in the blanks.

C. Discussion

Sample discussion question: How might you have felt if you had been present at Pentecost?

IV. WHO THE HOLY SPIRIT IS

A. Lecture

The personality of the Spirit is perhaps nowhere more evident than in Christ's solemn warning against the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 12:31-32; Mark 3:29; Luke 12:10). More positively, Christ treats the Holy Spirit as a person in His farewell discourse in John 14-16, where He characterizes the Spirit as a paraclete (a person called to the side of another), counselor, witness and teacher. Most certainly the personality of the Holy Spirit is portrayed in Jesus' pronouncement that “when He, the Spirit of truth is come, He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). For the Christian, then, it is never proper to refer to or think of the Holy Spirit as “It.” How much better that we should exercise care in using such personal pronouns as “He,” “His,” or “Him.”

A clear sense of the personality of the Holy Spirit can contribute much to a vital Christian experience. To think of the Spirit of God as simply a divine influence is to come perilously close to a kind of superstitious paganistic thinking which, at times, attempts to manipulate supernatural power to one's own advantage. However, when the Christian comprehends the Holy Spirit as a person, his concern will properly be “How may He, the Ho1y Spirit, possess and use more of me?” Proper recognition of the personality of the Holy Spirit, then, is a critical factor in keeping God central in human life.

THE CREATION AND THE FALL

ARTICLE OF FAITH

We believe that man was created by an act of God and not by a process of evolution. He was created in the image and likeness of God and enjoyed unbroken fellowship with Him. Then man was tempted by Satan and chose to sin by disobeying God's command. Because of his sin, man was separated from God and the sentence of both physical and spiritual death was passed upon him. Because of His love, however, God has provided redemption for all men who accept Christ as Savior through the work of Christ who died on the cross as a perfect sacrifice for sin. (Adapted)

CREATION

The two major views of the origin of the universe are creation and evolution. The theory of evolution suggests that all life, past and present, was formed through a gradual process over millions of years. Most evolutionists do not attribute the origin of life to God.

Creationists believe in the biblical account of creation. The first two chapters of Genesis teach that God brought all things into existence.

Read Genesis 1:1-31 to discover what God created on each day (does not mean a 24 hour day as we think of days) of creation.

HUMAN BEINGS ARE A UNIQUE CREATION

Evolutionists often suggest that human beings are merely members of the evolved animal kingdom. This is contrary to the Genesis account of creation.

How was the creation of Adam and Eve different from the creation of animals (Genesis 1:21-28; 2:7)?

Adam and Eve were formed from the dust. God breathed life into them. It was a separate act from the creation of animals. Adam and Eve were created in God’s own image and given a special relationship of authority over the rest

of creation.

God created humans in His own image to be above all other forms of life. Humans did not have to rise gradually above other animals through an evolutionary process - God created them to rule over every living creature on earth.

“In God’s image” cannot mean that we look like God, because God is a spirit without physical form. The divine image in which God created us includes the qualities of intellect (logic, reason, and knowledge), emotion (feelings), will (choice), and conscience (ability to know right from wrong). These qualities, which God also possesses, are given to us to help us love and serve Him. Together, they distinguish us from all other forms of animal life.

THE FALL

When Adam and Eve were placed in the Garden of Eden, they enjoyed a perfect relationship with God. They lived in a Paradise with only one restriction: they were forbidden to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:17).

Because Adam and Eve were created in the image of God and possessed conscience, they knew right from wrong. When given a choice between the two, they chose wrong although they could have chosen right. Because God gives people free moral choice, we can choose to resist temptation instead of submitting to it.

How did the serpent use doubt to tempt Eve (Genesis 3:1)?

By questioning what God said, the serpent used doubt to tempt Eve.

IV. HUMAN BEINGS ARE A UNIQUE CREATION

A. Lecture

In any comprehensive study of mankind, we must seek to discover its origin. For this, we are dependent upon two sources of information--science and revelation.

The scientific study of mankind (anthropology) may fall into two general categories, theistic and atheistic. The atheist attempts to explain the origin of people apart from God, while the theist affirms God's creative power.

God has chosen to reveal to us the basic facts that are pertinent to life in this world and the next. We believe that the Bible, though not a science textbook, is scientifically true when properly understood.

How did the serpent use lies to further tempt Eve (Genesis 3:4)?

He said, “You will not surely die…You will be like God…”

The temptation to disobey God came from the serpent, known throughout the Bible as Satan or the Devil. Satan used a three-fold attack in his temptation of Adam and Eve.

From what three vantage points did Satan appeal to Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:6)?

The fruit of the tree was good for food.

It was pleasing to the eye.

It was desirable for gaining wisdom.

THE RESULTS OF SIN

As an immediate consequence of the Fall, Adam and Eve realized that their state of innocence had abruptly ended. They quickly hid their nakedness (Genesis 3:7-9).

What were the consequences of sin for Eve (Genesis 3:16)?

The consequences of sin for Eve were increased pain in childbearing and subjection to the man.

What were the consequences of sin for Adam (Genesis 3:17-19)?

Adam was condemned to a life of hard work to produce food and in the end—death as a consequence of his sin.

What was the impact of sin on all people (Romans 5:12; Psalm 51:5)?

Because of one man’s sin, all would be born in sin and would be subject to sin and death.

The Fall brought death (Romans 6:23). Separated from God through their choice to disobey Him, Adam and Eve fell from perfect fellowship to exclusion from God’s presence. Since in Adam all sinned, the Fall rendered the entire human race guilty (Romans 5:12). Consequently, each person inherits a sinful nature (Romans 5:19), most commonly known as “original sin.” As a result of this sinful nature, the sinner does not desire to do right and simply falls short. Sinful people, until made alive by the Holy Spirit, do not have a correct understanding of righteousness. They want fulfillment, but miss it by not taking God into account. The sinful nature is evidenced by a spirit of selfishness and rebellion (Romans 8:7). However, there is hope. God provides a remedy (John 3:16).

SALVATION

ARTICLE OF FAITH

We believe that all men are sinners and guilty before God. They are dead in trespasses and sin, and are unable to save themselves. God has, out of His infinite love, given His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to become man’s Savior. Genuine repentance is a necessary attitude and act of man that makes it possible for a holy and just God to forgive man’s sins. Faith must accompany repentance and is the act of the will whereby man embraces the promises of God and appropriates to himself personally the provisions of God’s grace. When the requirements of repentance and faith have been met, God justifies and regenerates the sinner.

GOD’S PROVISION OF SALVATION

The Bible states that when we receive salvation we become a new creation (II Corinthians 5:17).

What does God do when we believe Christ and receive Him as our personal Savior?

John 1:12 God gives us the right to become His children.

John 10:10 He provides life to the full.

Romans 5:1 He justifies us and we are at peace with Him.

OUR RESPONSE TO SALVATION

Summarize the teaching of Romans 3:10 and Romans 3:23.

Salvation requires repentance. Repentance means “turning and going God’s way.” It is a change of mind or attitude. It is much more than merely being sorry for our sins; it is changing the direction of our life from wrong to right.

Paraphrase II Corinthians 7:9-10.

Salvation also involves faith. Faith is trusting God to do what He promised.

Using Ephesians 2:8-9, answer the following questions.

By what have we been saved? Grace

Through what did we receive grace? Faith

By what means can salvation never be achieved? Works

In addition to repenting and trusting God, we must confess that Jesus is our living Savior (Romans 10:9-10).

IV. OUR RESPONSE TO SALVATION

A. Working in pairs, summarize Romans 3:10 and 3:23.

B. Working in pairs, paraphrase II Corinthians 7:9-10.

C. Activity

Ask a volunteer to sit in a chair that has been placed at the front of the room. After the person is seated, ask the following question.

When did the person demonstrate faith in the chair?

When he/she volunteeredWhen he/she walked to the chair? When he/she sat down?

It should be pointed out that faith takes action that is based on knowledge. It is one thing to know about salvation and another to act on that knowledge. We must accept Christ as our personal Savior.

STEPS TO SALVATION

Circle your responses to the following statements.

1. I know I am a sinner (Romans 3:23). Yes No

2. I know God loves me even though I have sinned (John 3:16). Yes No

3. I know that Christ died for my sin (Romans 5:8; I John 1:7). Yes No

4. I am willing to turn from my sin and go God’s way (II Peter 3:9). Yes No

5. I want to receive Christ as my personal Savior by believing that He will save me as He promised (John 1:12). Yes No

6. I will tell others that I have received God’s gift of salvation (Romans 10:9-10). Yes No

If you are not already a Christian, you can receive Christ by praying a prayer of faith which expresses your belief and trust in God. Simply tell God the things mentioned in the above steps.

SUMMARY

Salvation is the work of God in a person's life. It is a gift of God, which cannot be earned, but must be accepted by each individual.

THE RETURN OF CHRIST

ARTICLE OF FAITH

We believe that the return of Christ is the hope of the church. The return of Christ will be personal, bodily, and visible. Christ will first descend into the clouds, where His church will be called up to meet Him. After a period of judgments, Christ will return with His church to judge the nations and to establish His kingdom. He will rule the earth a thousand years. After a final judgment, new heavens and a new earth will be established where there will be no sin and where the righteous will live forever. One of the greatest sources of encouragement and consolation for the Christian is the promise that Jesus Christ will return. It is one of the believer’s strongest incentives to holy living and dedicated service to God. (Adapted)

THE RAPTURE

The second coming of Christ, the rapture, is when Christ descends into the clouds, where all believers will be caught up to meet Him.

The word “rapture” does not appear in the Scriptures; however, the event it describes is outlined in the New Testament.

What do the following verses teach about the rapture?

Mark 13:32 No one knows when the rapture will happen.

Acts 1:11 Jesus will return as He left.

I Corinthians 15:51-52 We will be changed instantly.

I Thessalonians 4:13-5:4

The dead will rise first after Christ descends from heaven; then living believers will meet them in the air. The time of the return will be a surprise.

THE TRIBULATION

The Bible describes the tribulation as a period of great distress. It is not always easy to recognize the difference between the periodic suffering and trials of God’s people and the tribulation of which the Bible speaks.

Many Christians believe the Bible teaches that the rapture will occur before the tribulation (pre-tribulation view). Others view the Scriptures as teaching that the rapture will occur toward the middle of the tribulation (mid-tribulation view). Still a third group sees the presentation of God’s Word to be that the rapture will happen at the end of the tribulation (post-tribulation view). The majority of people in the Missionary Church adhere to the pre-tribulation view.

It seems clear that a world leader called the antichrist, the man of lawlessness, will appear during troubled times (II Thessalonians 2:3). He will bring a semblance of order out of the chaotic condition of the world. His human system will be totally opposed to God.

Who will the man of lawlessness pretend to be (II Thessalonians 2:4)?God

From whom will he obtain his power (II Thessalonians 2:9)?Satan

How will he win the masses (II Thessalonians 2:9-10)?Counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders

Who will be his followers (Revelation 13:8)?Unbelievers

What three aspects of the world will the antichrist control?

Revelation 13:7 politics

Revelation 13:8 religion

Revelation 13:16-18 economics

THE REVELATION

It appears from Scripture that at the end of the tribulation Christ will lead the army of heaven in a great battle against the rebellious nations. Christ’s victory will end the rule of the antichrist (Revelation 19:11-19). Christ’s return at this time is called the revelation.

What will happen to the antichrist when Christ wins the battle? (Revelation 19:20)

The beast and the false prophet will be cast into the lake of fire.

What will happen to Satan? (Revelation 20:1-3)He will be bound for a thousand years.

THE MILLENNIUM

The word “millennium,” meaning thousand does not appear in Scripture. It refers to the thousand years of justice, peace, happiness, long life and health, and material and spiritual prosperity on earth, which will be established by Christ. During this time Christ will reign and Satan will be bound. The millennial kingdom will include those who have been raptured, those who have been resurrected from the dead, and those who have survived the tribulation period. All of creation will benefit from this reign (Revelation 20:4-6; Isaiah 65:17-25).

According to Revelation 20:4-5, who will be resurrected before the millennium?

Martyrs killed during the tribulation

Who will rule with Christ during the millennium (II Timothy 2:12)?Believers

How will the millennial reign of Christ affect nature (Isaiah 11:6-9)?There will be peace. All hostility will end.

THE FINAL JUDGMENT

At the close of the millennium, Satan will be loosed for a brief period. He will lead a rebellion against Christ and His rule. Christ will bring this rebellion to a swift end, and Satan will be cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:7-10). Following this final rebellion, all who have died as unbelievers will be raised and judged by Christ at the great white throne.

What will be the fate of the unbelievers (Revelation 20:11-15)?They will be cast into the lake of fire.

What will make this eternal fate inexpressibly horrible (Revelation 20:10; Luke 16:23-26)? Eternal torment and eternal separation from God

THE NEW CREATION

The heavens and the earth as we know them will be changed. Sin and its effects will no longer exist (II Peter 3:13).

How will God destroy the earth and the heavens (II Peter 3:10-12)?Fire

What will the new heavens and new earth be like (Revelation 21:1-5?Beautiful, no more crying or pain

Who will share in this new everlasting creation (Revelation 21:7)?Those who overcome

How should Christ’s return affect those who believe in Him (Titus 2:11-14; I John 3:2-3)? They should live Godly lives at all times

THE CHURCH

ARTICLE OF FAITH

We believe that the invisible and universal church is an organism composed of all believers in the Lord Jesus Christ who have been called out from the world, separated from sin, and vitally united by faith to Christ, its sovereign Lord. (Adapted)

THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH

The word “church” means “the called out ones” (1 Corinthians 1:2). The universal Church, the Body of Christ, is an invisible organism composed of all who have accepted Christ as Savior. The universal Church is not the same as the local church, which is a visible organization of a group of believers who meet regularly. The local church will be studied in another lesson.

RELATIONSHIPS IN THE CHURCH

What do the following verses say about Christ and the Church?

Matthew 16:18 Christ will build the Church.

Matthew 28:18-20 Christ has authority over the Church.

Colossians 1:18 Christ is the head of the Church.

Ephesians 5:25 Christ sanctified himself for the Church.

How does the Bible describe the relationship between Church members?

John 17:21 Church members are to live in unity.

I Corinthians 12:25-26

There should be no division. There should be concern for one another.

Ephesians 4.16

IV. RELATIONSHIPS IN THE CHURCH

A. Lecture

Jesus Christ, the Son of God and the Savior of the world, is the sole Head of the Church that He “purchased with His own precious blood” (Acts 2:28; Ephesians 5:25-27). He founded the Church (Matthew 16:25-27). He adds to the Church (Acts 2:47). He has authority over the Church and governs it (Matthew 28:28; Ephesians 5:22-24). He directs the activities of the Church and gives to Christians their individual callings (II Corinthians 5:18-20). He protects and keeps the Church in keeping with His highest will for us (John 16:33; Revelation 1:17-18). He determines and establishes the doctrines of the Church (Acts 2:2, 33; I Thessalonians 2:13; I John 1:3-5). He ultimately rewards the Church (Revelation 21:2-7).

ORDINANCES OF THE CHURCH

An ordinance is a ceremony commanded by Christ to remind us of a spiritual truth.

ARTICLE OF FAITH

The Christian ordinances are two in number, baptism and the Lord’s Supper. They are the outward rites appointed by Christ to be administered in each local church, not as means of salvation, but as visible signs and seals of its reality.

BAPTISM

This ordinance is an outward testimony of the inward reality of Christ’s cleansing in a person’s life.

What does baptism symbolize?

Romans 6:3-4 unity with Christ in His burial and resurrection

I Peter 3:21 the pledge of a good conscience toward God

Titus 3:4-6 the washing of regeneration

Galatians 3:27 putting on Christ

What must people do before they are baptized?

Acts 2:38 repent of sins and turn to God

Acts 16:14-15 have a personal relationship with God

Acts 16:30-33 believe in Christ

Why should believers be baptized?

Mark 1:9-11 Follow Jesus example – He was baptized.

Matthew 28:19 Jesus commanded it.

Acts 18:8 It was the pattern of the early Church.

Christians practice three different ways of baptism: sprinkling, pouring, and immersion. The Missionary Church practices baptism by immersion (symbolizing the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ). We do not baptize infants, but rather encourage the formal dedication of young children in a public service of the church.

THE LORD’S SUPPER

This ordinance (often referred to as communion) is a constant reminder of our Lord’s sacrifice, its meaning, and our relationship to Him because of it.

I Corinthians 11:23-24 I Corinthians 11:25-26

What are the elements? bread cup

What does each symbolize? Christ’s body Christ’s bloodbroken for us shed for us

Why partake of them? to remember to rememberChrist’s suffering Christ’s death

Why does the Bible say it is important for a believer to prepare for participation in communion (I Corinthians 11:27, 29)?

We are to examine ourselves so we don’t sin against Christ and so that we don’t bring judgment upon ourselves.

How should believers prepare for participation in communion (I Corinthians 11:28)?

Believers should examine themselves before they eat the bread or drink the cup.

SUMMARY

The body of Christ is made up of all believers and exists for the purposes of worship, discipleship, apostleship, stewardship and fellowship. The Holy Spirit equips the Church to fulfill its purposes. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are the two special ceremonies of the Church.

IX. THE LORD’S SUPPER

A. Lecture

The Lord's Supper is observed in memory of Christ and His redeeming work on the cross. Only Christians are to partake. Each believer is urgently exhorted “to examine himself before he eats of that bread and drinks of that cup” (I Corinthians 10:16; 11:23-24).

B. Fill in the blanks.

Note: There are three basic views concerning the elements of the Lord's Supper. Some of your students may have understood communion in one of these ways.

CHURCH NAME MEANINGThe Missionary Church Symbolic The elements are symbolic of Christ’s body and blood.

Roman Catholic Transubstantiation The bread and the wine are changed into the body and blood of Christ even though the elements still appear as bread and wine.

Lutheran Consubstantiation The presence of the body of Christ is with, in and under the elements, although they do not change in substance.

THE MISSIONARY CHURCH

History is a record of the past. It helps us understand how we got where we are today, it gives us a sense of our “roots” and it suggests ways we can plan for the future.

Truth to know: “Remember the days of old; consider the generation long past. Ask your father and he will explain to you.” (Deuteronomy 32:7)

What does Deuteronomy 32:7 say we should do about the past?

1. We are to remember the days of old.

2. We are to consider the generation long past.

3. We are to ask our fathers to explain our history.

PRECIS OF MISSIONARY CHURCH HISTORY

The Missionary Church was the name selected following the merger of the Missionary Church Association and the United Missionary Church in 1969. This was possible because both denominations were committed to preaching only what was in the Bible and to evangelizing the world.

The United Missionary Church, known until 1947 as The Mennonite Brethren in Christ, was formed at a meeting near Dayton, Ohio, in 1883. It began, however, in the 1850’s when a number of Mennonite ministers were dismissed from their former churches for having prayer meetings, holding revival services, and giving public testimonies. It was largely through the leadership of Daniel Brenneman and Solomon Eby that the denomination was organized.

Joseph Ramseyer founded The Missionary Church Association after he was dismissed from his former denomination for wanting to be baptized by immersion as a born-again believer in Christ. Ramseyer continued to preach the message of God’s love through Jesus Christ as Savior, Sanctifier, Healer, and Coming King. In 1898 those who shared his convictions adopted the name “The Missionary Church Association” because of their desire to evangelize the world.

Further information about the history of The Missionary Church can be found in Merging Streams (book) by Eileen Lageer and Backward Glance (video).
