To develop effective agriculture marketing societies

Marketing research in India is clearly at a point where it is set to become indispensable if theliberalization of the economy and expansion of consumer choice, which has become palpable in therecent years, is going to continue. With the opening of the Indian economy, the markets havegradually become buyers' markets. In India, market research is essentially used as a reactive tool, it isin the static stage; whereas, I feel that MR should serve as a proactive tool, helping corporationsoptimize their functioning by bringing research into all marketing efforts, by integrating it into the longand short term marketing strategies and by involving the operational staff who actually carry out thework that can use informed research results. Market research often ends up being used as anisolated tool that gives a narrow picture of the past without giving a holistic view and an insight intothe future.

The need of the hour are MR professionals who are true managers - managers who have to facilitate

a radical change in the way market research is looked upon today; very often as an activity done by aseparate cell and an end in itself. I see myself, as an MR professional, using research as anactionable tool, incorporating cutting edge methodologies, getting the needed results while savingtime and money. I want to turn it into a dynamic instrument, use it to feel the pulse of the market, make probabilistic predictions abut the market through sophisticated tools and ultimately get involvedin product innovation and strategic planning.

To achieve this, I would like to gain exposure to the latest practices adopted by the trend makers inthe field of market research and information systems. To this end, I would probably want to work witha leading international market research firm that would enable me to help corporations leverage theirfocus. I would like to bring this acquired expertise back to India, and use it to help companies to growin the stiffly competitive market. I see market research as a sensitive and flexible instrument to be

applied with insight, imagination and creativity.

At Centennial Cotex, I was part of a cross-functional team that helped the firm shift its focus to the handicraft market where such coarse fabricwas a good alternative. It is here that I gained wide exposure to the SPSS software and other tools ofresearch design. At NMC, I have worked as an efficient and effective coordinator throughout researchprocesses and work directly with numerous researchers on a wide variety of projects. I haveexperience in research design, questionnaire development, analysis, writing and interpreting resultsand a range of quantitative and qualitative methods. The ability to work in a fast paced setting with time sensitive jobs made my summer internship atPepsi a further step to learning. I was a part of a number of marketing promotions of the company ona local scale. My project on customer research on a key stock keeping unit required consumerprofiling and a high degree of qualitative analysis through a study of buyer behavior using researchtools like focus group interviews and perceptual mapping. Fashion" for me is not just a word or a term, it is my passion, my

identidy. I was born in Nepal a very small Country, where Fashion is

still in its infancy. I grew up hearing that clothing is just a

requirement, a necessity for us humans. But I always thought there is

more than that to it. I always believed Fashion is not just about

looking good, but It is about feeling good and confident.

Growing up in a country where every parents want their children to

become Doctors and Engineers, it was difficult for me to convince the

people around, my interest in the world of Fashion. Fortunately with

time I was able to convince my parents go to India and do a course in

Fashion Designing, after completing it successfully I came to the UK

for further studies and completed my degree in Fashion and Textiles.

Whilst studying i got an oppertunity to Work at House Of Fraser as a

sales Advisor in the ladies wear department, where i learnt a lot

about how all the buying, selling, merchandising and marketing

process works, and yet designing is just an initial process. I started

developing a very keen interest in the Marketing Side of the

Mysterious Fashion World, yes that is what I call it, because I always

had so many questions on my mind, always used to wonder about the

sucess behind all the big designer names , the chain of Fashion, the

seasonal style and colour forecasts, concept of brand loyality, and a

lot more. Eventually i got answers to most of my questions, some from

my work place some from my Course work, and some from my own research.

Whilst on my third year in the University i had already decided that

my interest is more on the marketing and merchandising side than thedesigning side.

After the completion of the Course ,due to Family commitments ,I had

to move to different cities within the UK, and did not really get to

focus on my career. For almost three years I travelled and moved from

here to there. During these years I was in.

Among the many processes involved in studying abroad, one of the things students find extremelychallenging is writing the Statement of Purpose or SOPs as they are popularly known. The SOPs arean integral part of applying for universities abroad. This truly can be the deciding factor betweenacceptance and rejection to a university. Here are a few pointers that will help in writing a winningSOP.

The Ideal StructureAn effective SOP may be written in about seven to ten paragraphs, with a word length ranging from700 to 1000 words, unless otherwise specified by the university. This presents a comprehensivepicture and maintains readability. Broadly, one's SOP should be written in the following sequence: abrief introductory paragraph, academic background, interests, short /long term goals and a concludingparagraph

    Follow A Sequence

Ideally, begin the introductory paragraph with a quotation or a recent news caption or your beliefs ormajor influences or your background. This charecterises your personality and your values.

Information about ones academic background should be mentioned in no more than three to fourparagraphs. Focus on academic development. Ideally, devote a paragraph each to of yourundergraduate studies, seminars presented and projects done, internships and training taken up.Undergraduate studies should specify your field of study (e.g. BTech in Mechanical engineering etc.),the college you attended and the year. It is good to leverage the brand equity of the course or thecollege here, if possible. Mention special subjects studied, your GPA or rank, if any. Emphasise thefact that the medium of instruction is English, if the case may be. This makes a lot of difference.Highlight the seminars presented, as well as the projects undertaken, individually or in teams and goon to state the skills and insights you developed as a result of this exercise. Give broad details ofinternships, summer projects and practical training received.Listing briefly the interests, skills and talents you have developed alongside your academic curriculumwill present you as a well rounded personality. You may also mention memberships and volunteeringactivities. It is advisable to mention your short and long term goals. Explain what you intend to study and specifythe areas of interest by identifying your strengths in the relevant areas and market yourself. Also statewhy you wish to study your chosen subject from a specific university. Long term goals forecast yourprofessional plans such as getting into entrepreneurship, work as research faculty or managementetc.

Writing Dos and Don'tsUse objective style of writing (no GRE/TOEFL vocabulary needed). Write in the first person and usethe active voice.

Strike a balance between the past and present tense, especially while transitioning from theachievements of the first three to four paragraphs to the supposed intent in the subsequentparagraphs.Have a main topic sentence for each paragraph with support sentences which illustrate, explain orstrengthen the main points.Be precise and focused by using quantifying words. Use strong verbs as they show the concernedaction. Be confident, especially in the concluding paragraphs by stating affirmatives with words such

as I believe, I can ensure etc.Do not be sentimental or subjective (e.g. my parents dreamt of this career for me!).Never include irrelevant academic or other information. Stay linked to your purpose. Steer clear fromundue praise. (e.g. Your esteemed university is the best place for me - they know it!)Never be negative or unsure. Instead of saying, 'If offered admission, I will do my utmost,' say "On aconfirmed admission, I can display my ability-'Finally, write, rewrite, get it checked for substance and style, word process, mail the envelopes andwatch your purpose fly to its destination.
