But, it is only when you are there, high above the earth’s surface, that you can truly understand. That giddy sense of joy spoken of on the ground can be felt in the chest once airborne. It is a combination of an adrenaline-filled rush in tandem with a deep feel- ing of serenity. It is also the joyful change of perspec- tive, seeing something you’ve seen hundreds or even thousands of times from an angle that gives the subject new life. Flying from Greenland to Hampton Beach, one stops being a participant of Seacoast life and instead becomes an observer. The hustle and bustle of I-95, the local beaches filled with the clamoring masses and the natural beauty of the salt marshes can all be seen as one looks at life as though through a microscope. The pilot, Craig Morse, who also happens to be the man who built the 587- pound plane we’re travel- ing in today, is more than happy to share in the joy that he’s been experiencing for years. Even after 54 flights during the week of the fly-in there’s still a big smile on his face while in the air. Craig and his wife, Jeanne, have been sharing that fun through their busi- ness Mainely Sport Planes. Since 1999 the two have been turning people on to ultralights and sport planes and the fun they can pro- duce. The two sell the air- craft, build them and even offer instruction in their operation from their home in Patten, Maine. “We basically try to help people get up in the air and start flying,” he said. Craig was inspired to start the business after his first time in a sport plane with a friend from Virginia. “I had so much fun I thought everyone needs a chance to do it,” he said. There is a certain amount of faith that goes with flying in a plane assembled from a kit. But, Craig built the Sky Ranger we’re flying in — the 14th such plane he has construct- ed — and he’s piloting it so if it’s good enough for him… Comparing this ride to that of a commercial airline flight is like comparing a ride on bus to that of a motorcycle. In a smaller craft the sights and sounds envelop you unlike the large airliner where the only sensory input is a tiny bag of honey roasted peanuts as the mind is washed over with the brain-deadening drone of turbine engines. There is also more to do on this little plane. The pas- senger actually can see the pilot and speak with him instead of wondering if said pilot even exists. At one point mid-flight Craig releases the controls, demonstrating the stability of the little plane. “As you can see,” said Craig in jest, “it’s very hard to handle.” We lean forward in our seats and the planes nose begins to dip, lean back and the plane climbs. A demonstration of the Sky Ranger’s power and maneuverability has the lit- tle plane turned on its side with its passenger facing the ground in a short- radius turn. There is the briefest of moments where the heart leaps into the throat as gravity becomes more reality and less theo- ry. Fortunately for Craig, breakfast is not a big meal for me. While flying in sport planes and ultralights may not be for everyone, Jeanne said they have taken people of all ages on the ride. In fact, their oldest passenger yet, a 93-year-old woman, was among the several wannabe fliers that the Morse’s transported last week. “She loved it,” said Jeanne. “She got out of the plane and said, ‘That was fabulous.’” As one would logically assume, all this freedom isn’t free. The Sky Ranger kit alone rings in at $15,295 and that’s sans engine, instrumentation or pro- peller. Toss those into the mix and you’re looking at the mid-$30k range. The plane we flew in today totals closer to $50,000. While that may seem pricey, Jeanne said the investment can last a life- time. “Once you spend the money and maintain what you have,” she says, “it’s going to last.” A BIRD’S EYE VIEW — Of Hampton’s North Beach and Meadow Pond (top) and North Hampton School, as seen from the heights of an Ultralight.
