Shana Tovah u’mitukah, may your new year be sweet and full of family, friends and community. I write this as the

summer draws to a close and look forward to the new year of Tzedakah Hadassah. We have so many exciting things

planned for the coming season, giving us many opportunities to reconnect, make new friends and accomplish so much

for Hadassah. Coming in January we will be celebrating our 10th Anniversary as a chapter. Tzedakah Hadassah has so

much to be proud of. Every year we have not only met our fundraising goals, but surpassed them. We can be very

proud of our part in the building of the Sarah Wetsman Davison Hospital Tower. In addition to the fun, inspiring and

educational Lunch & Learns we have planned, our fabulous card party and our not-to-be-missed fashion show, we will

gather together at special celebrations to honor our chapter’s achievements and look forward to another 10 years. We

are also planning a special 10th anniversary cruise for December 2016.

This past year, Hadassah adopted a new logo and tag line I particularly like:

HADASSAH, the power of women who DO. Hadassah women are activists, fundraisers, visionaries, wives,

sisters, daughters and mothers. They don’t just talk. Hadassah women DO.

I can’t think of a better description of our chapter. We not only care and support the State of Israel and Hadassah

Medical Centers, we care about the United States, our community and the world. Whether we raise money for cutting

edge medical research or collect school supplies for children in need in Boynton Beach, we are stepping up to help make

the world a better place. I can’t be more proud of what we do and what we represent.

Suzanne and I, along with the entire Tzedakah Hadassah board look forward to the coming year.

In Case You Missed It . . . by Barbara Friedeman & Eve Barak

At last spring’s Passover Lunch and Learn, we shared the following most fascinating story. We are including it in this bulletin for those of you who may have missed the event and for those who attended and wanted to share the story with their family and friends.

One of the most well known American Haggadahs has an interesting history. Most Ashkenazi Jews did not drink coffee during Passover because they believed that the coffee bean was an actual bean that fell into the category of legumes and was, therefore, not allowed to be consumed during Passover. In 1923, Joseph Jacobs, an advertising genius, consulted Rabbi Hersch Kohn, an Orthodox Rabbi, to determine if the Maxwell House coffee bean was, in a technical sense, more similar to a berry (a fruit) and would thus be Kosher for Passover. The Rabbi certified that the Maxwell House coffee bean was in fact kosher for Passover. General Foods, with the help of the Joseph Jacobs Advertising Agency, then started to market Maxwell House coffee to Jews in New York City. Sales increased dramatically! In 1932, to reinforce the kosher-for-Passover message, the Agency developed a Haggadah, consulted once again with Orthodox Rabbis as to its accuracy, and then distributed it for free to supermarkets across the country. At first the Haggadahs were given only to those customers who purchased Maxwell House Coffee. Later, supermarkets offered the Maxwell House Haggadah, known for its simplicity, for free. It has become one of the most popular Hagaddahs in the United States and in Canada. Over fifty million Maxwell House Haggadahs have been printed, making it the most widely used Haggadah in the world, and the most widely circulated item of Judaica in the world. In recent years, the Maxwell House Haggadah has undergone several changes, notably a more modern English language translation and a new color scheme. It is still produced and is the longest running sales promotion in advertising history.

We are eagerly anticipating our 2016 Passover Lunch and Learn. Our program will feature Memorable Stories of Passovers Past. Our program will be a shared experience and we would all love to hear your stories.

SPOTLIGHT ON: BARBARA

FRIEDEMAN

Editors Note: Barbara is an original charter member of our Tzedakah Hadassah chapter. When you meet Barbara you are immediately taken with her friendly smile, warm personality and positive attitude. She is so competent at everything she volunteers to do, including writing of her own bio for this spotlight article. She is certainly a valuable asset to our chapter and the Hadassah organization.

I am the only child of Holocaust survivors. I grew up in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan, where many of the German Jewish survivors lived when they first settled in the United States. I attended New York City elementary schools and The Bronx High School of Science. I received a B.S. in Education degree from the City College of New York and an M.S. in Education degree from the City University of New York.

While still in college, I married my childhood sweetheart, Bert Friedeman. Upon graduation, I became an elementary school teacher in New York City where I worked for several years. We moved to Marlboro, New Jersey after our first son, Barry, was born. I became a stay-at-home mom. Our family grew. Andrew, was born in 1971, followed by Steven in 1973. We became active in our fledgling community and were founding members of our temple. I served as Adult Education Vice President of the Sisterhood and later as President of the Sisterhood. After all the boys were in school full-time, I resumed my teaching career. I worked once again as an elementary school teacher, then as a Reading Specialist, and finally as a Special Education Teacher and as a mentor to new teachers. Most rewarding was the opportunity to work with my Special Needs Students over a period of years and be able observe their progress. In 1988, I received a federal grant for a program I wrote specifically for these children. They became Time Travelers and ventured back in American history. The children wrote about their travels and published their stories using the computers and printers obtained from funding provided by the grant. It was an exciting time in education. I was the first teacher to have four Apple Computers and a printer in my classroom! In 1989, I was named Teacher of the Year in my school district for helping enrich my students’ writing skills and bringing computers into the classroom.

Our children flourished, and all obtained graduate degrees. Our family grew once again as we welcomed three wonderful daughters-in-law and seven adorable grandchildren over the ensuing years.

After retiring in 2005, we began spending the winter as snowbirds in Tivoli Lakes and summers at a Four Seasons adult community in Jackson, New Jersey. I am so grateful that Bert and I formed warm and wonderful relationships in both communities. Since Bert’s passing in 2012, the caring and support I have received has been overwhelming!

I now spend my lots of time on my computer, my new electronic gadgets, walking with my Fitbit, golfing, and reading. I still enjoy cooking, especially trying new recipes. Bert and I traveled extensively, and I am looking forward to resuming this part of my life. This fall I’m going to Australia and New Zealand. I’m a devoted grandmother, trying to share in my grandchildren’s lives and activities whenever I can. I’m a member of the Social Committee at Tivoli Lakes.

I’ve been involved with Tzedakah Hadassah since its inception in 2006. I felt that I would like to become involved in the important work of Hadassah so that I could, in my small way, contribute to the advancement of the cause of our people. I served on the phone squad and the Nominating Committee, was Corresponding Secretary and I am currently serving as Co-Education Vice President. We are truly fulfilling our mission—supporting Hadassah’s fund raising for programs in Israel, and educating our membership about all of Hadassah’s programs worldwide. I am so proud of our chapter’s accomplishments and look forward to the celebration of our 10th Anniversary and our Bat Mitzvah after that!

If I could spend one day with anyone from the past, my choice would be to tour the brand new Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower Hospital at Ein Kerem with the visionary, Henrietta Szold, the founder of Hadassah and the Youth Aliyah Movement. Szold was also instrumental in establishing Hadassah Hospital. She envisioned the country of Israel, but didn’t live to see it. How she would marvel at the strides made in Israel and at Hadassah Hospital!

I wish that one day soon women all over the world would be allowed to live with dignity. I pray that my grandchildren will be able to live in a world of understanding and tolerance—free of bigotry and hate.

"THE ORIGIN OF SORROW"

Love stories, highway robbery, adultery, controversy over a school for girls, investments from American Revolution

money, a debate with Moses Mendelssohn – all these are part of the dramatic novel The Origin of Sorrow by Robert

Mayer.

The City of Frankfurt regulated much of the lives of the Jews in the ghetto. All Jews were required to live within the walls

of this ghetto, although men could go outside if they had approved business, but the gates were locked at 5 p.m. Men were

not allowed to marry until the age of 25, to cut down on the rate of Jewish births. This was not such a bad idea considering

that the ghetto consisted of a single lane only a quarter of a mile long and from ten to twelve feet wide (with a sewage

ditch the whole way down its length). But by the mid-1770’s there were already more than 3,000 people living on the lane

in a space originally intended for 300. How did they all fit? Most houses were no more than eight to ten feet wide, and

there were two rows of them. The Jews could build upward, but windows that looked out over the walls had to be boarded

up by law. As a result of the tall, multifamily houses over a single lane, the Jews never could see the sun except for the few

minutes it was directly over the lane in between the houses, and subsequently the Jews became known for their pale, pale

complexions!

The confined quarters of the Judengasse plays a large role in the book, as it played a large role in the lives of those who

lived within its walls. Once notorious, this Judengasse--Jews Lane--a passionate place infused with love and hate, with

frustration, ambition and desire, has been largely forgotten. Robert Mayer reports that, while reading about the founding

members of the Rothschild dynasty, he became interested in what the first Mrs. Rothschild must have been like. He

couldn’t find out much about her, so he decided to write the book on her himself. She definitely had to have been a

fascinating character; as a 16-year-old girl named Guttle Schnapper she married a 26-year-old coin dealer named Meyer

Rothschild, bore him ten living children--and how, incredibly, from this sordid ghetto, emerged the richest family in the

history of the world, as well as the influential men whose financial prowess could make or break kings and countries.

Most of the narrative concerns Guttle as a young girl before and for a short time after her marriage to Meyer. A nice

epilogue fills us in on what happened toward the end of Guttle’s life, long after Meyer had died. (She survived him by

thirty-seven years, and refused to leave their house in the Judengasse.)

Mayer brings the Judengasse to life, and makes an interesting case through his imaginings for what the exceptional young

girl could have been like who was the mate of the man, and mother of the men, who changed the Western world. We also

get to know some of the other residents of the ghetto, and learn about the ways in which they coped with the physical,

legal, and psychological strictures of the time.

There was an abundance of discussion of Jewish women’s issues in the book. The controversy over the opening of a school

for girls was just one. How to deal with one’s hair upon marriage was another issue. It seems that some Jewish women in

Frankfurt previously had shaved their heads before marriage.

The book includes mystery as well as history. If you like novels with lots of action and historical drama, you will probably

enjoy The Origin of Sorrow.

Come Wear your Hadassah HAT! On "HAT Sunday" -- November 15, 2015 Submitted by Eve Barak

HAT is the acronym for "Hadassah Advocacy Talks," a 6-hour learning program of expert-led talks that will center around four major Hadassah-related themes: The World Stage (Israel and the U.N.); Cutting-Edge Medicine in Israel; Gender Equality in Medical Research; and Anti-Semitism & the College Campus. The program is sponsored by Hadassah Florida Atlantic, and is open to the entire community. It will take place on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at the Embassy Suites in West Palm Beach (1601 Belvedere Road), from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM.
