Renovated Existing Buildings New Additions

Professor | J. Jones + P. Magyar

3rd Year Studio | Fall 2010

The College of Architecture, Planning and Design at Kansas State University has become one of the highest regarded public institutions offering Master Degree programs in the architectural design fields. In its effort to continue its success in the education of young architects, the university has explored opportunities to provide a facility that coincides with the college’s recent accomplishments.Seaton Hall rests in the heart of Kansas State University’s main campus. In its current state, the facility does little to reflect the nature of design that occurs within the confines of its walls.

In an initial effort to raise awareness, the college looked to a collaborative studio between third and fifth year students. The proposed design focuses on intersections, at various scales, to provide a building that showcases the college’s excellence in design. The intersection of a “green ramp” with the overall form allows for the main circulation paths on the campus to pass through the building presenting opportunities for interaction to occur. In addition, the intersection between the historic building and the modern form to generate a new landmark on the campus of Kansas State University.

Separation of Program Core Located Support and EgressAtrium Circulation for Procession

Professor | N. Howe

3rd Year Studio | Spring 2011

Located in the heart of downtown, the Crossroads district has become one of the fast growing areas within Kansas City, Missouri. Once a heavily populated manufacturing zone, the district has quickly transitioned to become a hub for the arts. With a prominent location on the east side of the Crossroads district, the site is situated in an epicenter of activity surrounded by small art galleries, local businesses, and restaurants, etc. With monthly events, such as the First Friday’s art showcase, the project has the opportunity to become an integral feature in the district.

Due to the Crossroads district being for the arts, the proposed public library needed to be more than just a library. It had to offer the flexibility to be multifunctional and should fit seamlessly within the context of its surroundings. The proposed design accomplishes this through the formal design of the space. The playful nature of the main staircase, in contrast to the dark material bookends, becomes an art installation in itself. It provides an experiential procession that takes the user from the public realm at the street level to the solitary reading environments scattered along its path.

The location of the site lies on the southeast edge of the SOMA (south of Market St.) district, which began as a low density neighborhood for the wealthy, but at the beginning of the 20th Century, due to its proximity to docks, the area was transformed into an industrial area populated with small manufactories, warehouses, and working class housing. In the mid to late 20th Century, SOMA was populated by a wide variety of subcultures, as industry moved out of the city core. A glance at the local context reveals a wide array of points of interest and services: restaurants, shopping, commercial ventures, recreation.

The Downtown Economic Assistance Center is designed to help those who are truly interested in bettering their economic situation. The Center is dedicated to increasing the long term prosperity of its clients. With respect to the building form, heavy emphasis was placed on the overall structure of the design. Due to its location in a highly seismic region, a rigid exterior concrete superstructure was designed to lessen the impacts of any earthquake activity. The design highlights this structure with a formal expression that envelopes the building and generates penetrating forms within the interior.

Located in the heart of downtown, the Crossroads district has become one of the fast growing areas within Kansas City, Missouri. Once a heavily populated manufacturing zone, the district has quickly transitioned to become a hub for the arts. The location at 18th St. and Main St. places the proposed project just off the main stretch of Southwest Boulevard and the epicenter of the district. Additionally the site, is within walking distance of downtown and the Power and Light Entertainment District providing the site with ample opportunities for visitors and foot traffic.

Furniture, at its basic level, is dependent upon its connections. Throughout the history of furniture design, two routes have been taken, to show off these connections or to hide them. Based on the aesthetic a designer is looking for, determines which they will follow.A gallery for displaying this work should take on similar characteristics. The combination of various construction materials led to these instances to be showcased throughout the building. The proposed design looks closely at how connections can drive design decisions at various scale; city, site and building scale.
