Tin is one of the world’s most valuable metals becouse it is an important component used in many different industries and various applications. Tinplate, for example, has been a long-standing necessity in the can-making and food-packaging industriy. Solder, is an important component in the electronics and electrical industries.Other aspects of tin, the tin chemicals, have also been growing rapidly. There are two types of tin compounds; the organic compounds an inorganic compounds.The organic compounds, known as orgaontins, have thrived into a lucrative industry within the past 50 years. Consumption of inorganic tin compounds is also on the rise. Both types of compounds add to nearly 20% of total tin metal consumed worldwide.On the Priodeic Table of the Elements, tin is a member of Group IV, along with lead, carbon, silicon, and germanium. Organic compounds can appear in two oxidation states: +2 (stannous form) and +4 (stannic form). Both types of organic compounds are used to form other important industrial compounds. Inorganic compounds appear when there is no direct covalent tin-carbon bond in the molecule, even though it may contain an organic anion.Tin is known as a green metal becouse it is environmentally friendly - and safe if in contact with food. Tin naturally decomposes in the nature by natural processes like oxidation, rust, and other biological activities.Although some tin chemicals must be handled with care, proper precautions and safety techniques can alleviate the chances for tin products to become pollutans to the environment. A study has showned that all organotins ultimately degrade in the environment due to ultraviolet radiation, biological degradation and chemical reactions that break down the tin - carbon bond. Organotins are different from other heavy metal pollutants becouse they do not pose a long-term burden on the

Tin stabilizers have been safely used for over fifty years as heat stabilizers in PVC processing technology. Suppliers and users of tin stabilizers continue their product stewardship efforts to promote and encourage the responsible hanling of materials at PVC processing plants as well as continued produst imporvement. PT Timah Industri, was established as a subsidiary of PT Timah (Persero) Tbk, has been a crusial expansionary arm of its parent company’s business development since 1998.

Initially, PT Timah Industri’s focus is on its principal activities in trading, engineering and manufacturing services, as well as toll smelt production. Along with its technological and human resource development, the Company soon ventured on a large-scale expansion and entered into construction services and manufacturing of mining equipment spare parts.

Now, it serves not only as the main supplier of PT Tambang Timah, but also as service provider to several external companies. PT Timah Industri has won numerous tenders and in 1998 completed the construction of five privately-owned palm oilfactories in Sumatra. The Company has also developed the capacity to build and repair various types of ships, up to the capacity of 5,000 DWT, and to produce assorted high-precision spare part.

In addition, the Company has been pushing for a dynamic protfolio into downstream industry to support its core business by developing projects, particularly in tin chemical industry. It has setup a tin chemical plant, designed with capacity to reach 10,000 MT capacity annualy and readily expandable to meet increasing market demand, in Cilegon, West Java.
