VOLUME XXIII Issue 6 January 2018

Happy New Year! Where has the first semester gone? Thank you, for your attendance at the High School and Elementary Music programs. Your continued support of student activities is always appreciated. Basketball season is under way with continued success and the spring will bring continuous activities in Speech, Quiz Bowl, Science Olympiad, Track & Field and Music. With continued activities and programs, we are excited about beginning the second semester. School Safety Here at Paxton Consolidated School we make the safety of our students and staff a top priority. We continue to educate ourselves on ways to prevent tragedies.

v Throughout the school year we keep our facility locked, requiring visitors to check in at the office. v Staff are visible throughout the building and aware of any unusual activity. v Students are educated on what to do if they see someone that they may not recognize or know and

are taught to not open the doors for anyone. v We have installed a camera system that monitors activity inside and outside the building. v We have an annual safety audit completed as required by Nebraska Department of Educations

Rule 10. v Participant in the NDE School Safety Pilot Program.

During the first semester we practiced several types of safety drills with our students and staff. Safety will continue to be a priority for us and we appreciate your help when noticing something out of the ordinary. We will continue to have safety drills during the upcoming second semester. With the New Year come new and exciting challenges for students, staff, and parents. Paxton Schools looks forward to these challenges and invites you to visit or call anytime. When visiting school please stop by the office to sign in and out and to receive a visitors pass.

Its a new year; its a new beginning! Make 2018 Your Best Year EVER!

As we start the new year there are goals and resolutions that we hope to achieve. A New Year means a new beginning and chance to live our lives to the fullest. Inspirational quotes to kick start your New Year:

"Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence." ~ Helen Keller~

Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering, It will be happier. ~Alfred Lord Tennyson~

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. ~Winston Churchill~

Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every new year find you a better man. ~ Benjamin Franklin~

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined. ~Henry David Thoreau~

If you asked me for my New Year Resolution, it would be to find out who I am. ~Cyril Cusack~

A little more persistence, a little more effort, and what seemed hopeless failure may turn to glorious success. ~Elbert Hubbard~

"Tomorrow, is the first blank page of a 365 page book. Write a good one." ~Brad Paisley~

"One resolution I have made, and always try to keep, is this: To rise above the little things." ~John Burroughs~

The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We can help write the story by setting goals. ~Melody Beattie

Seniors Apply for Financial Aid for College - Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. FAFSA is used to to apply for grants, loans, scholarships and work-study jobs. The FAFSA is used by almost all colleges to award non-federal student financial aid and scholarships. Both the student and the parents will need to apply for a PIN number. You will find the FAFSA application at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

  • WHAT exactly is college? College can mean almost any type of education beyond high school (sometimes called postsecondary education). This can include: College/University, Community College, Trade School, Military, Apprenticeship, or Technical Training

WHY would I want to go to college? In a few years, nearly 70% of jobs in Nebraska will require education beyond high school*. So college could get you a better job and a career you enjoy. Andyou should get better pay! Did you know that graduates from a Nebraska four-year college earn more than $15,000 more a year than a high school graduate?

All Juniors Take the ACT Test April 11th, 2018. Each 11th grader in the state of Nebraska will be taking the ACT this spring. Paxton Juniors will take it here at Paxton Schools on April 11, 2018 will be provided free of charge. This ACT will be treated the same as any other ACT and students will have the opportunity to send their scores to colleges free.

How to help your student prepare to take the ACT as it not only determines whether a student can qualify to get into a college, but it translates to lots of scholarship money the higher score you make. There are multiple ways to prepare for the ACT. Here are several recommendations: 1. Practice every day on the ACT Prep website. 2. Register and take the ACT on Feb.10th. The cost is $42.50. Taking the actual test multiple times is recommended for all students. 2. Use free ACT prep materials online such as Khan Academy. Get a copy of an official ACT Practice Test Booklet from Mrs.Meyer.
