A message from the DirectorHappy New Year! I hope you’ve had a great holiday season with strong store sales, satisfied customers and time with family and friends.

We’ve just completed the year’s busiest retail shopping period. Thank you for serving customers during the often demanding holiday season. We’ll report in more detail on holiday sales in the next issue.

This month, we salute the work of all our retailers, who earned $188.6 million in sales and commissions and made Fiscal Year 2016 a success. The year brought with it a record $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot and double-digit growth in both Keno and EZPLAY® Games. Check out our fiscal-year-in-review on page 6-7. Here, you’ll find an overview of how all games performed at traditional retailers this year. We encourage you to use this information as a starting point to talk with your sales representative and set achievable goals for the upcoming year.

For our instant-selling retailers – we have three new games coming Jan. 11. Mark your calendars and get these new games activated by Jan. 12. These new games are in high demand. As an added bonus, you’ll be entered into the next activation incentive drawing for $500 prizes. Talk to your sales representative to learn more. Industry data shows that making instant ticket activation a priority pays off for retailers.

The fantasy-themed 3D game, Game of Gold, is set to reach your stores next month. Ohio becomes one of only a handful of U.S. lotteries to offer a 3D instant game, which can be played the old fashioned way or in 3D with the download of a special Game of Gold app. Learn more about it on page 4.

Here is something all our retailers can promote – MyLotto Rewards®. You know who your loyal customers are – why not make sure they’re signed up to receive player perks as members of MyLotto Rewards®? Customers earn points for Lottery play, and can take home practical gifts like retail or restaurant gift cards, enjoy something new with digital downloads, or enter drawings for opportunities of a lifetime. One of the New Year’s first opportunities is geared to players of the Cleveland Cavaliers instant game. Enter the drawing for a chance to watch the championship team up close at an upcoming game. Next month, MyLotto Rewards® customers can check out the Powerball Power Cruise promotion. Learn more about both in this issue.

We’ve got some exciting opportunities to kick off the New Year. Please reach out to your sales representative or regional office as you need assistance. Together, we can make this a year to remember!

Sincerely,

Dennis Berg, DirectorThe Ohio Lottery

Fiscal Year 2016: A year in reviewThanks to the hard work of Ohio Lottery retailers, a world-record Powerball jackpot and growth in newer games like Keno and EZPLAY®, the fiscal year was one for the record books. Traditional retailers (excluding VLTs) sold $3.060 billion worth of Lottery games to customers in Fiscal Year 2016, earning $188.6 million in commissions and bonuses. Overall, traditional Lottery game sales were up 5.8% or $167.6 million from the previous year.

Draw games, including the Keno and EZPLAY® Game categories, recorded their best year yet, with sales of $1,498.9 million, up $157.8 million or 11.8% from the prior year.

It was a good year for U.S. lotteries overall, with all lotteries seeing some type of growth, according to LaFleur’s Lottery World, an industry trade publication. Ohio’s growth came mainly from its “online” or draw game category. Ohio ranked 6th in draw game sales, 11th in instant game sales and 9th in total traditional game sales among U.S. lotteries.

Here’s a breakdown of how Ohio Lottery retailers fared by game category.

Numbers GamesWith Pick 3 leading the way, daily draw games−also known as Numbers games−made up 18.9% of overall Lottery sales. Daily draw games generated sales of $579.8 million, up 2.8% compared to the previous year. Pick 3 sales were $343.0 million, up almost $5.0 million or 1.5% from the previous year.

The largest, single draw payout in the Ohio Lottery’s daily draw games came Nov. 28, 2015 when the Pick 4 number of 1-1-1-1 was drawn, paying out almost $6.6 million to Lottery customers. During the year, draw game customers won more than $285.2 million in prizes.

In-State Lotto GamesLotto game sales were $95.9 million, down 2.4% or $2.4 million compared to the prior year. Rolling Cash 5 was the sales leader, generating sales of $60.2 million, down $2.3 million or 3.7% from the prior year. Rolling Cash 5 produced 112 jackpot winners in Fiscal Year 2016, with the biggest Rolling Cash 5 jackpot of the year−$656,000−drawn May 27, 2016. The winning ticket was sold at Kroger Co. #445 in Cleves.

The Classic Lotto jackpot grew to $17.4 million before being hit Dec. 30 at Riesbeck’s of Bridgeport. KICKER, the add-on game to Classic Lotto, secured three $100,000 top prizes during the fiscal year. KICKER’s top prize winners hailed from Urbana, Mentor and Lancaster.

Overall, customers won $48.6 million playing in-state lotto games during the fiscal year.

Multi-State GameThe big news this year was the $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot. Retailers in Ohio and throughout the 46 other U.S. jurisdictions selling the game had some of the largest crowds they’ve seen in a long time. The roll sequence for the record-setting jackpot began Nov. 7, 2015, rolling for 19 drawings until Jan. 13, 2016 when three lucky ticket holders, hailing from California, Florida and Tennessee, hit the jackpot.

While selling the “big one” remained elusive here, the Ohio Lottery sold three $1-million winning tickets−one each in Centerville, Cleveland and Toledo−in the Jan. 13, 2016 drawing. The build-up of the jackpot brought a great deal of customer excitement and exposure to the game and to the Ohio Lottery. The record jackpot roll earned Ohio Lottery retailers almost $6.0 million in commissions and bonuses, as well as additional traffic to their stores.

Ohio captured a $200 million Mega Millions jackpot Nov. 13, 2015. The winning ticket was sold at Blendon Drive Thru in Westerville, with the winner using auto lotto to choose the draw’s winning numbers. It was Ohio’s 18th Mega Millions jackpot win since joining the game in 2002.

Lucky for Life debuted Nov. 15, 2015 in Ohio. Unlike other jackpot-driven games, this multi-state game promises two “for life” prizes − a $1,000-a-day-for-life and $20,000-a-year-for-life prize, along with eight levels of single payout prizes. By the end of the fiscal year, the Ohio Lottery has captured one, $1,000-a-day-for-life and three $20,000-a-year-for-life prizes. Two more $1,000-a-day-for-life prizes quickly followed in August and September 2016.

EZPLAY® GamesThe Ohio Lottery offered 38 ticket-

generating EZPLAY® Games during the fiscal year, including four progressive EZPLAY® jackpot games. The Ohio Lottery launched a new-style progressive game this year in Quick Spot. Players can choose from a $1, $5 or $10 price point, for an opportunity to win a full or partial jackpot prize, depending on the price point played. Quick Spot generated approximately $12.6 million in sales. The most popular progressive EZPLAY® Game this year was $5 Going Pro, which generated $16.5 million in sales.

The Ohio Lottery’s fraternal organizations and clubs offered 18 EZPLAY® Tap games, distinguished by their on-screen play style, during the year. Sales totaled $31.5 million, up $7.5 million or 31.4% compared to the prior year. The most popular games were Treasure Dig, Breaking In and Heads or Tails, which together made up 46% of Tap game sales.

KENO/Booster®Keno earned its place as the top-selling draw game in Fiscal Year 2016, beating out Pick 3, which had held the position as the top-selling game since 1979. Keno sales totaled $275.3 million, up $25.1 million or 10% from the previous year. Cumulative Keno sales reached $1 billion in February 2016, securing year-over-year increases since the game began Aug. 4, 2008.

The Keno game multiplier, Booster®, generated sales of $90.5 million, up $11.2 million or 14.1 percent. Together, Keno/Booster sales totaled $365.9 million, with players earning $239.5 million in prizes.

QuicKeno games, available on the touch-screen MPQK vending machine, began June 19, 2016 as a pilot program in approximately 1,000 bars, taverns and restaurants. Three QuicKeno games were released during the year, with Super Keno the sales leader. QuicKeno games generated $742,957 in sales in the 12 days leading up to the close of the fiscal year.

Instant GamesInstant game sales totaled $1,560.7 million, up $9.7 or 0.6% from the previous year. Customers earned $1,094.4 million in prizes.

The Ohio Lottery released 61 new instant games during the fiscal year, with

customers purchasing more than 363 million instant tickets at retailers across the state. Based on the number of tickets sold, $1 Holiday Cash was the single most popular ticket among customers, followed by $2 Cash Explosion and $1 5x the Money.

The two $30 instant games, $500 Million Spectacular and 40th Anniversary Millions, led the pack in total sales for the game category. $500 Million Spectacular generated an estimated $98.4 million in sales and 40th Anniversary Millions generated $97.1 million. Together, they accounted for about 12.5% of instant game sales for the fiscal year. As a category, instant games made up 51% of total sales among traditional retailers.

Looking AheadThe Ohio Lottery took another look at raffle-style games, and launched Ohio 50/50 Aug. 29, 2016, after the close of the fiscal year. With a drawing held each Saturday, Ohio 50/50 has attracted a sizeable following, with 32 winners guaranteed each week. Top prize winners take home 50% of net sales as the top prize, with the jackpot averaging $90,200 through Nov. 5, 2016.

Spectrum Gaming completed a business assessment of Ohio Lottery operations in September 2016. The Ohio Lottery is reviewing its recommendations, utilizing that research, along with benchmarking of peer lottery states, to determine the best next steps for opportunities that benefit retailers and Ohioans across the state.

Agent Feature: Dave’s Food Mart, Norwalk

By Marie Kilbane Seckers, Communications

Dave’s Food Mart is a thriving, family-owned and operated gasoline-c store and drive-thru. Located off State Route 250 in Norwalk, the store operates 24/7 with a steady stream of customers through the drive thru and at the convenience store counter. Want to play Ohio Lottery games? A selection of Lottery games, and a terminal for processing wagers, can be found at both locations.

The store’s roots go back to the 1970s when Dave Fisher, a former milkman with Bower Dairy, opened a small grocery store in Norwalk.

“I grew up with Lottery,” son Joe Fisher says. As a teenager, he was teaching employees how to run the Lottery terminal.

“We do in four hours (today) what we used to do all day,” Joe says, who now has young adult children of his own.

The Lottery, especially in those early days, was almost like a club, he says. People would make sure they got to the store at a certain time to meet with other like-mind customers. When regulars called in, staff members would answer their Lottery questions. He remembers those days fondly.

In 1998, Joe’s father was offered an opportunity to move his store to a new location, giving his store a new focus -- convenience items, beverages and gas. That mix of products, according to Joe, was unusual for the time.

Business boomed. Dave asked his son for help and Joe began working fulltime at the store, helping manage the business and a second store, Dave’s Park Avery Store, in Milan. In addition to its convenience store items, the store does a brisk lunch business, supplying the Milan store and offering subs, sandwiches and fried chicken to local organizations.

Dave passed away in 2012, but his legacy and the business he developed continue on with his wife Philomena and their family.

Joe works closely with Addie Hawn, a veteran sales representative who works out of the Lorain regional office. She provides advice to improve his Lottery business and keeps him up-to-date with the most current Lottery activities.

In 2015, Joe agreed to have a Lottery makeover at his store. You can see the eye-catching Lottery display in a number of store windows and in the drive thru. Sales have grown over the last four years and are on pace to continue.

He’s had some challenges as well, and has taken measures to improve Lottery game accounting. He uses a detailed spreadsheet to account for his instant ticket inventory. If the cash drawer is short, he’ll review the discrepancy until he’s satisfied the issue has been fixed.

Joe believes in rewarding his loyal customers and would like to develop some type of loyalty program, although he’s not quite sure what form that might take. He’s offered second-chance drawings in the past, and other perks. That might be a job for Joe’s son Jack, a business major at Bluffton University, who will soon be graduating and entering the business.

“You need to anticipate what your customers want, and it’s not always straight forward,” Dave says.

“I’m a work horse and do what needs to be done.”

Dave’s Food Mart, a family-owned business in Norwalk, operates 24/7. Joe Fisher (center) grew up in the family business and his children, McKenna (left) and Jack (right), help out and have learned a great deal about what it takes to operate a business from their father. “Every aspect of the business has grown,” Joe says.

Keys to success• Use of reports to track instant and

draw game sales. Joe uses a system of computerized spreadsheets to keep track of sales daily and by shift. “It’s not like you can just sit back; you have to put some effort into it,” he says to keep Lottery accounting in order.

• Keeping bins fully stocked. “There’s no use carrying Lottery games if you don’t keep it (bins) full,” he says.

• Cashing winning tickets. Joe reviews a sample claim form from time to time with his staff, showing them a filled out form so staff is prepared when the next big winner comes into the store.
