Together with the attendees, the presenter will identify strategies to develop the areas that should be covered in a LocKit and decide on the level of detail that should be reflected in this document. 12:00PM–1:30PM Lunch on Your Own 1:30PM–3:00PM Vendor/Client Relationships Karen Combe, Vice President of Localization, PTC Project Managers on the client and vendor sides have the same title, but often their jobs are quite different. In this session, the presenter explores the similarities and differences in the two roles, with the intent to enable good working relationships. Participants will have the opportunity to address some common problems that Localization PM’s encounter. 3:00PM–3:30PM Networking Break 3:30PM–5:00PM Localization Project Planning (Scope, Schedule & Budget) Bob Donaldson, Vice President–Strategy, McElroy Translation Drawing on his experience in both localization and more general software development, Bob Donaldson, VP of Strategy with McElroy Translations, will discuss the challenges associated with getting an accurate work breakdown structure, a staffing plan that spans many different types of contributors, a schedule that is resilient in the face of all sorts of uncertainties, and the “unknowables” of project management. The session will focus on the work breakdown aspects of localization project planning. Underlying the presentation will be a “Theory of Constraints” approach to project management (emphasizing throughput) rather than the more traditional “PMI” approach. This session will also challenge the common and unspoken assumption that project management is somehow “easy.” As the title implies, the presentation will focus on effective communication as the fundamental enabling strategy for project success, with many practical suggestions for avoiding common communications pitfalls.
