Club events

2013 Theme Selection

Please go to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LLYKLNF and

complete the online survey which includes choosing the themes

for next year's competitions, and providing further feedback on

the club (should only take 5 minutes, unless you like to

procrastinate over the themes!) Theme selection deadline = end

of October ie in 1 week.

Photo of the Year Competition – Members may submit any

photo that has been submitted for one of the 2012 competitions.

You may submit up to 2 images for each category (Print and

Digital). All submissions are due by the AGM. Entry category

submission must be in the same category as submitted earlier in

the year (ie you can submit a print of a previous digital

submission, or visa versa)

Club Meeting – AGM – 8th Nov

Our AGM will be held on Thursday 8th November at the LIBRARY,

from 7.30pm (ie normal time/place). The club is providing dinner

for all attendees (pizzas, turkish, or similar)... please email any

dietary issues so we don't leave you out!

Part of the AGM planning is to gather nominations for the

various roles within the club. You can nominate someone, or

yourself. All roles are open. Mat will be stepping down as work

steward after 4 years of service in this role, and I will also be

stepping down in my role as club president. Enthusiam for the

club, and not necessarily photographic experience , is all that's

required. There's plenty of help, provided we share the roles.

Please provide nominations in person or via reply email.

Library Display – This month’s winner’s will be on display at the

Glenroy Library.

Upcoming Event: End of year dinner 22nd Nov

The committee has opted for an end-of-year dinner instead of the

usual BBQ lunch. We are planning a dinner on Thursday

November 22nd at the Post Office Hotel (cnr Reynard and Sydney Rds, Coburg) to mark the end of the year. The food

there comes highly recommended. I believe we'll be choosing

either the $35pp option or the $45pp option. Club Awards and

social stuff on the night!

Those who would like to attend please email Sharron with an

expression of interest so that she can make a booking.

Thanks Sharon Email: [email protected]

Recent Event - World Wide Photowalk Oct 2nd

This is a social photography event where photographers get

together (usually in a downtown area or trendy section of town)

to walk around, shoot photos, and generally have fun with other

photographers. Paul ran a photowalk in Abbotsford, on Sat Oct 13th – it was a

great day to be out with your lens. If you missed out this year, keep an eye out for photowalks in our 2013 program.

Check out our Flickr page to see this year’s group photo. http://www.flickr.com/photos/flyingdoc/8095383614/in/pool-parklandsphotoclub

Tips for travel photography

I know many members discovered their love of photography

when capturing their travel experiences, so I thought it would be

interesting to talk about suggestions for better photography on

the road. From me, here’s a how-on-Earth-have-I-never-done-

this-before moment I had a couple of weeks ago while travelling

in Singapore – use Google! Yes, sure, I’ve done a million Google

searches, but it has never occurred to me to Google specifically for photography ideas at a travel destination. But one night I was

able to duck out for a photography night while my husband

looked after the kids, and I wasn’t sure where to go. And a quick

Google for ‘Singapore best places for night photography’ gave me

lots of great sites, including one from a local photography club

with some very informative links to follow up! Who would have

thought! Now that I’ve twigged, I plan to make checking for

destination photography advice a regular part of my travel prep

in the future.

Here are some bits and pieces from other sources:

Photographer of the month – Jeff Wall

Jeff Wall is a Canadian photographer who creates images

showing a variety of subjects, from everyday occurrences to

elaborate staged scenes. His work is often exhibited as large

back-lit transparencies. In some works, he shoots many images

over a period of weeks and months and stitches them together

digitally to create the final image. The National Gallery of Victoria

will be presenting a major exhibition called Jeff Wall Photographs

over summer – see below and stay tuned for details of a

Parklands excursion to see the exhibition in January.

Quote of the month

‘A photographer is like a cod, which produces a million eggs in

order that one may reach maturity.’ George Bernard Shaw

Dear Parklands Photography Club,

My wife Susanne and I run a photographic gallery and fine art printing business in

Fairfield, Melbourne. Photography has been my profession ( and hobby ) since I

was 15 years old ( I'm now 59 ! ). I judge many competitions and speak about

photography at many events.

Our business is designed to help people in photography.

I have been asked to lead a photographic tour of Turkey next year, it is a subject

I'm very interested in as I have helped provide photographs for many WW1 books

as well as helping save many photographic collections. At the moment I'm working

on a book about History of Anzac day.

Dr.John Bazarin is a Turkish born historian and author of 6 books about Gallipoli.

Some information about the tour is below and I was hoping you might be able to

distribute this to your members. I have also included information about our prize

for photography which although closing soon may also be of interest.

Kind Regards,

Michael Silver
