are transferred to the city of Puno, you are
going from sea level to an altitude of 3,827
meters (12,628 feet). Most likely, you will feel
some symptoms of altitude sickness, ranging
from shortness of breath, or headaches to
dizziness. As our itinerary is fast paced, we
elected for you to spend night two in Puno
in a comfortable hotel, acclimatizing a little
before heading off to Lake Titicaca on Day 3.
We highly recommend that you speak
to your doctor about taking an altitude
sickness medication to assist you in your
acclimatization.

as well as a range of different products. A great place to start getting a
feel for Peruvian artistry, fair trade, and the scope of this eld.www.fairtradeperu.com
If you arrive earlier than the rest of your tour companions, it is possible
to visit some Fair Trade artesan groups in Limas outskirts. You will
need to pay the cost of this tour yourself. This is an eye-opening
excursion into some poor parts of Lima.

Not included: Meals, because it depends on your arrival time.
Day 2 - Lima to PunoAfter a group meeting in our Lima hotel where we get to know eachother, we will go over the itinerary (9am -10.30am) From here, we will

electricity, and a very different way of life.

Background information on Taquile
The island of Taquile is located 22 miles (36 km.) away from the city of
Puno. It takes a 3 hour boat ride to arrive in the islands main dock. The
island highest elevation is 853 feet (4,000 m); it has a length of 3.35
miles (5 km) and a width of 0.8 miles (1.5 km). The 535 stairs that take
the visitors to the main village have become very popular among those
tourists who like to take over the challenge of exercising at such high
altitude. However, we also offer other options following enjoyable paths
that gradually take you to the main village or more remote sectors of
Taquile. These other options allow you to catch spectacular views of
Lake Titicaca.
Taquile has approximately 1,200 inhabitants. The people from this
island have a Quechua origin and they are mostly small farmers.
However, since mid 70s they have also become well known for their
rm entrepreneurial spirit. Since the beginning of the tourism ow to
the island, some Taquilenos have been participating directly with
the tourism activities. Some of them have organized themselves to
provide tourism services such as home stays, restaurants and aquatic
transportation.
This tour will take you into an enlightening discovery of the essence ofthe local culture that includes encounters with local families of non-
touristy sectors of Taquile. Local guides will do the interpretation of
textile designs of Taquile, traditional clothing, and their way of life

hiking trek, which has one night of camping.
Included: accommodation, transport, Boleto
Turistico. Not included: Lunch & Dinner
Day 8 - Chayhuatire & Pisac - The Sacred ValleyOn this trip we visit rural communities to learn a little about their
weaving and farming techniques. Though in the Sacred Valley, this is a
far cry from the relatively touristed Pisac and Urubamba.
We will depart Cusco at 8am in our private vehicle, and travel to the
Sacred Valley village of Pisac, which is famous for its Sunday market
which has now evolved into a daily tourist market. Here we will have
an hour to wander the market and to see the wide range of souvenirs
(including hand made textiles) that are on sale to the average visitorto Peru. From Pisac we will head up into the mountains (by car) to the
famous weaving village of Chayhuatire. Supported by the CTTC (Centre
of Traditional Textiles of Cusco) Chayhuatire has been developing and
improving their weavings for the past 30 years.
Before visiting the village we continue from the village uphill to visit
some pre-Inca rock drawings. Chayhuatire weavers will give us a dying
and weaving demonstration and you will have the opportunity to buy
some of these spectacularly woven items. The quality of the products
offered is superb, so you cannot expect to get a bargain though you
will meet the person who made your souvenir!
From Chayhuatire we will mount our bicycles for a gentle downhill
cycling experience (approx. 2 hours) to the ruins of Pisac. By bicycle,
you will have time to appreciate the scenery and take in a little of the
relaxed lifestyle above the Sacred Valley, having time to see farmers at
work and people at their daily business. In Pisac ruins we will have a
short guided tour before descending to the Sacred Valley.
NOTE: If you are uncomfortable riding a bicycle downhill you can ride
in the car, which will be going at a slow pace, so you can also
appreciate the scenery along the way.
We will be transferred to our accommodation in Urubamba, an example
of rural tourism.
Included: accommodation, transport, bicycles & safety equipment,
Boleto Turistico, Lunch. Not included: Dinner
Day 9 - Ollantaytambo (Sacred Valley)Today we will have a (slight) sleep in and opportunity to appreciate the
rural nature of the Sacred Valley at our rural accommodation before
taking our private transport onto Ollantaytambo which is famous as the
only remaining town laid out according to an Inca plan.
During the day, (depending on our other visits) we will have a guided
tour of the impressive ruins of Ollantaytambo.
Depending on availability we will have talks & visits with representativesof the following organizations. (There is also an opportunity to talk to
have talks with these people on Day 11, if necessary)

Cultural note
These are remote and high altitude villages.
Conditions are harsh, and even though we will
be camping in relative luxury (toilet tent, dining
tent and mattresses, conditions are basic).
There will be no opportunity to bathe (other
than washing hands and face) and you should
be prepared for extremely cold conditions. By
the same token, this trip has many beautiful
views and encounters with the people, and
will most likely be the most memorable part of
your entire 14 days in Peru.
Day 11: After a morning visit to the school, we will start climbing uphill
on the Colquepata pass, approximately 4100m, and a strong climbstraight up for about 2 hours. Though breathless and feeling the climb,
we will go slow and be rewarded with truly spectacular views of the
mountains and the achievement of reaching the pass will be amazing.
From there its all downhill for about 3-4 hours, tough in itself due to thesteep incline of the mountain but lled with interactions with the people
that we meet along the way and amazing alpine scenery. We havelunch en route.
We pass through some very remote high villages. Arrival in the Lares
Valley is a relief after the high altiplano its lush vegetation and pretty
farmhouses are warm and welcoming. We will have a well deserved soak
in the hot springs of Lares before heading back to Ollantaytambo (3 hrs
drive) where we will stay in the same hotel as we did on Day 8. Total
hiking 10km 6 hrs
Included: transport, translators, breakfast & lunch & dinner on day 10,breakfast & lunch day 11, snacks, camping gear, entry fee to lares hot
springs. Not included: tips, extra snacks, water, dinner day 11.
Note: For people of less than moderate
tness there is also the opportunity to
take the car further up the hill to Palqaq,
from where the hike to Chaullacocha is
approximately 3 hours and has less uphill.
This makes the hike easier, but by no means
easy. You need to hike this section there is
no other way to reach these remote villages.
Days 10 /11 - Hiking to Chaullacocha & ChupaniDay 10: We will start early, departing from Ollantaytambo. It is about 1
hours drive up hill to Patacancha. In Patacancha, we will start hiking,
gently uphill. We hike for about 4-5 hours, crossing a high pass (4200m)
before reaching Chaullacocha. Along the way there will be curious
llamas and alpacas stopping to check you out... a beautiful moon like
landscape, stunning views of lakes and the odd encounter with a local
person tending their sheep and alpacas.
In Chaullacocha, one of the weaving communities supported byThreads of Peru, we will have the opportunity to learn more about this
remote village. The women will be doing a weaving demonstration and
we can talk to them (via Quechua translators) about their weavings.
The school in Chaullacocha is also supported by our organization and
if we arrive during a school day the teachers and children will be happy
to interact with us.
We will have lunch in Chaullacocha before continuing on for another
1 - 1.5 hours to Chupani. Chupani is another weaving village that
is supported by Threads of Peru. Your tour leader will provide more
insights into the work done by Threads of Peru while in Chupani. We
will camp the night in Chupani where our professional chef will serve updelicious, hot, three course meals. Total hiking 12km 6 hrs
Note: Hiking the high Andes, is never easy! If youre not of good tness
you should train at home. Well supply emergency horses, but theyre
to assist, not to ride the whole way!

Normally, during high season those people
who climb Huayna Picchu spend a extra day
at the ruins just to get in the queue for the
mountain and then spend a good amount of
time on this classic mountain. If you dont get
to do Huayna Picchu, other options are: Inti
Punku (gate of the sun) this is the location
where the classic Inca trail arrives, Inca
Bridge,Machu Picchu mountain.
We highly recommend walking downfrom Machu Picchu to get a feeling for
the vegetation and also the audacity of its
builders. Its a 1.5 hour walk back to the villageof Aguas Calientes. We return to Cusco in theafternoon by the Vistadome train (approx.
4pm) and are met by a driver at Ollantaytambowho will transfer you directly back to your
hotel. You will arrive in Cusco approximately 4hours after your trains departure from
Aguas Calientes.Included: Train tickets (Vistadome service), Machu Picchu entries, bus
up and down, Boxed Lunch, guide service, Accommodation (Cusco)
Not included: Dinner, tips
Day 12 - Ollantaytambo to Aguas CalientesYou will spend the morning having an opportunity to relax, and do
some washing. Its also time to reect on your time in Peru so far, and
perhaps indulge in a massage or if you feel so inclined take a short hike
up into the mountains around Ollantaytambo.
Your tour leader can suggest a range of different activities you might
like to indulge in
In the early afternoon, (between 2 & 3pm) we will take the Vistadometrain to Aguas Calientes, the service town for Machu Picchu. After
checking into your accommodation, we will have the opportunity
to relax at the hot springs and prepare for Machu Picchu. If there is
time, and for those who like a challenge, there is the opportunity to
climb PutuCusi for your rst, inspiring look at Machu Picchu. (Round
trip 3 hours. Difcult and steep hiking, with a series of ladders. Not
recommended for those with vertigo or a fear of heights!)
Included: Vistadome train ticket, Breakfast, accommodation, transfers.
Not included: entry ticket to hot springs (optional), Lunch, dinner
Day 13 - Machu Picchu to CuscoEarly in the morning (before dawn) we will take a bus up to the ruins
of Machu Picchu. (Bus included in price) so that you can appreciate
this famous city in the dawn light and before the crowds arrive. You
will then have a 2.5 hour guided tour of Machu Picchu with your guide.
After your tour you can further explore the ruins by yourself or climb
Huayna (Wayna) Picchu for that classic photo of Machu Picchu. Please
note that new regulations (designed to protect the ruins and for the
safety of visitors) mean that there are two entry times to Huayna Picchu
- at 7am and 10am, and each time has a limit of 400 entries. Also try
