Hard Hitting Detective Work!

ALH

What would you say is the biggest challenge you face? Dealing with death on a regular basis. What is the strangest request you've had from a citizen? One request that I get all the time is to return the gun that a loved one used to kill themselves with. What has been the most unusual or interesting case you've had as a detective? The Lee's Chicken Murders. Four teenagers were herded into the cooler and executed; still the biggest murder case in Tulsa. Because of the hard work by Detectives and Field troops, the suspects were captured within 24 hours. What is your most rewarding experience? Delivering a baby prior to EMSA's arrival.

n March 3 thru 6 the Tulsa Police Department coordinated an organized search for the remains of Ashani Creighton, a four year old child missing since 1997 out of Orlando Florida. The search concentrated on a commercial property lot on the northeast corner of East 61st Street and South Mingo Road. Credible information indicates the child was buried at this location and a commercial building placed on the property at a subsequent time. Participating in the search were members of the Tulsa Police Department, the Orange County Florida Sheriff's Office, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Necrosearch International, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the Oklahoma Archaeological Survey, Special K-9 Search and Recovery, INCOG, StressCon Inc, and Tactical Electronics.

Ground Penetrating Radar was used to scan the building floor and parking lot to locate anomalies under the concrete. K-9 dogs trained in locating human remains were utilized to locate areas of potential remains. Experts in body recovery and geophysics viewed current and historical photography of the site. If a review of the information gathered by these sources indicated further examination was warranted, a location of interest was determined and a 4" core thru the concrete to the ground below was cut and removed. Archaeologists probed the holes to determine if there was any indication the ground below the core area had been disturbed or if any object could be felt. Fiber Optic cameras were also utilized to examine possible void areas. Based upon the results, a larger hole was opened in the concrete and a systematic excavation of the ground below was conducted. Two such areas were opened in the floor of the building. Neither opening resulted in any human remains recovery. All involved in the search agreed the plan, put in place and implemented, worked well. The technology utilized is the most advanced available at this time. The target of the search, a small child and possible container, are difficult targets to locate even with the best technology. While the search did not locate the child, it did identify a secondary location to search. Planning for that second search is currently underway. --Crime Scene Detective Margaret Loveall
