There I sat, last week, at the L.A. Convention Center surrounded by over 6,000 extremely proud resident aliens. We all sat there, knowing that we were soon to be officially welcomed as new citizens of the United States of America. As we stood to say the “Oath of Allegiance,” I was humbled by the emotion displayed by the people surrounding me. I heard women openly sobbing and saw men with tears running down their cheeks. This was a big deal! I remembered our personal journey to this point, which had started 10 years earlier. It had been a tough journey. We had to leave our country of birth, our family and friends, and start again from scratch in a foreign land. We had to take the leap of faith for the promise of a better future. Then last week while in the Convention Hall, I was acutely aware that we were not the only ones who had to make sacrifices. In this emotional moment of becoming a citizen of the greatest country on Earth, it was hard to suppress the emotions that bubbled inside us.

I listened to the video of the President congratulating us on becoming citizens. We all felt very proud. As they sang “The Star Spangled Banner,” it was as if I were hearing it for the first time…as mine! “The Land of the Free and the Brave...” Yes, one does have to be brave to leave behind that which you know, for something that is just a promise. But to be FREE! Our right to freedom! Freedom to reach for your dreams! Now that’s worth the journey!

In that hall, we had people from 104 different nations. Wow! This scene gets played out every month in cities all over the U.S. People from all over the world want to come to the U.S.A. to be FREE! But what does it truly mean to be a citizen? I came across a phrase that really resonated with me, “I Citizen.” My epiphany followed. We are no longer just citizens of a country. As technology forever increases and expands…our world gets smaller. As the world gets smaller…our role as an individual gets bigger. We can effectively change anything, anywhere in the world, with our words and actions, right from our kitchen tables. My epiphany as “I Citizen” was not that I now had freedom as a citizen of the greatest country on Earth, but rather it opened my eyes to the reality that I was a Citizen of the World!

My sister recently ran a marathon in Kenya to raise money and awareness for the plight of the Rhino. Over 20,000 people from all over the world ran this marathon and they raised millions. One person came up with the idea, and the “world” responded to help. All we have to do is get involved and take action.

“I Citizen.” To me, this means we can no longer sit back and just let others make the tough decisions. I need to get involved. In fact, it’s printed in big headlines under

“My Responsibilities” in the Citizenship Handout. “Get involved,” it states.

I’m reminded of Margaret Meads words, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

As I left the hall last week, applications for passport done, certificate of citizenship in hand, I made a silent pledge to effect good positive change. To be a better Father, Husband, Leader, Neighbor, and Citizen! After all, Freedom is never a given, it has always had to be earned. We are all so fortunate to be citizens of this incredible country. But as privileged leaders of the world, we have a huge obligation to be a part of something even bigger. We are all privileged Citizens of the World!!! Our world needs us! Now is the time for all of us to recognize our responsibility and take action for the better good of all!!
