Jardine Lloyd Thompson – Investing for Long-term Growth
Keeping Pace with ChangeWe all recognize that today’s business environment is changing fundamentally and at
an accelerated rate, largely driven by rapid advances in technology. This is having an
impact on companies’ relationships with customers, employees and business partners.
In order to keep pace with that change and to compete effectively, I believe that it is
essential that we take a fresh look at how we operate and have the ambition and vision
to be bolder and seize opportunities for growth.
The winners of the 2015 Pride in Performance Awards all demonstrated the ambition and
vision needed to achieve success, especially Grand Prize and Superior Growth category
winner, Indonesian coal contractor Pamapersada Nusantara (PAMA). In response to
falling coal prices, PAMA has transformed its operations over the past three years and is
now widely recognized as one of the leading coal mining contractors in the world.
Jardine Lloyd Thompson (JLT), the subject of our feature on pages 14-19, is another
example of a Group business which has seized opportunities for growth. In the last five
years, JLT has almost doubled in size with revenue passing the £1 billion mark for the
first time in 2014. It has also extended its global reach with the launch of a specialty
insurance broking business in the US and significant other mergers and acquisitions in
the UK, Latin America and Asia Pacific.

Fresh Thinking to Further Growth as Group Results Show Good Performances
Most of the Jardine Matheson
Group’s businesses produced good
performances in 2014 despite more
challenging trading conditions. There
were improved underlying earnings
in Jardine Pacific, Jardine Motors, JLT,
Dairy Farm and Mandarin Oriental.
Hongkong Land did well to maintain its
profitability after a record year in 2013
despite lower earnings from residential
developments. Astra’s underlying
earnings were modestly lower in its
reporting currency, but a weaker rupiah
reduced materially its contribution in
US dollars.
The Group’s revenue for 2014, including
100% of revenue from associates and
joint ventures, was US$62.8 billion,
compared with US$61.4 billion in 2013.
Underlying profit before tax for the
year was US$4,451 million, a decrease
of 3%. Underlying profit attributable
to shareholders was up 2% at
US$1,534 million, while underlying
earnings per share were 1% higher at
US$4.14.
In his annual address to senior
executives following the results’
announcement, Managing Director
Ben Keswick said that today’s business
environment was not the same as it
was just a few years ago.
“It is changing fundamentally, and the
pace of change is accelerating,” said
Mr Keswick.
The Group is in the midst of transition,
he told his audience, and over the
next few years would see great shifts
in the way it operated. In order to
compete effectively, it must take a
fresh look at its businesses with three
key imperatives. Firstly, it must have
the ambition and vision to be bolder
and seize opportunities for growth.
Secondly, it was crucial that it embraced
new ways of working, and thirdly
underpinning this ‘Fresh Thinking’ must
be having the right people on board,
who were properly developed and
empowered.
To help encourage ‘Fresh Thinking’,
Mr Keswick announced the launching
of a series of ‘Knowledge Workshops’.
These will involve experts in fields such
as big data, analytics, social media, and
disruptive technologies and provide a
forum to incentivize ‘blue sky’ thinking.
“We are all on the same journey – and
those not yet on that journey had better
get a move on!” concluded Mr Keswick.
Group Chairman Focuses on China Investments
In Beijing, Sir Henry was received
by Vice Premier Wang Yang, who
commented on the significant
investments that the Group has
made in China over the past year.
One of these is Dairy Farm’s 19.99%
acquisition of Yonghui Superstores,
an exciting partnership, which
will give Dairy Farm
significant exposure
to China’s huge food
retail market. During
his stay in Beijing,
Sir Henry toured a
Yonghui superstore and
a Mannings store. The
new partnership is also
accelerating Mannings’
store development with
two new stores already
opened in Yonghui
complexes in Beijing
and Shanghai.
In Chongqing, Sir Henry was greeted
by the Mayor of Chongqing and visited
the automotive dealerships of market
leader Zhongsheng, in which the Group
acquired a 20% interest last year.
During his stay, he commented that the
Group continues to have confidence in
the Chinese economy with a positive
outlook on its investments.
Sir Henry also made a trip to Taipei
where he met with local business
partners and the heads of Group
business units.
During his staying at Mandarin
Oriental, Taipei, Sir Henry hosted a
number of business leaders including
the owner of Mandarin Oriental, Taipei,
Sukasem M C Lin, and Ruentex Group
Chairman Samuel Yin. He also met
with Chris Wood, Director of the British
Trade and Cultural Office in Taiwan. Left: Jardine Matheson Group Chairman Sir Henry Keswick with Vice Premier Wang Yang.

about 350 million people, which is more
than the current population in the USA.
Mr Keswick, who was appointed a
director of the CEF in 2014, also said
that Jardines’ increasing presence in
China now represented an investment
of more than US$8 billion, with
the focus on providing premium
products and services to the high to
middle income group in the country,
particularly in consumption-related
sectors such as auto, retail, property
and healthcare.
Emphasizing the Group’s continuing
confidence in the China market,
Mr Keswick said that future
prospects would be aided by the
continuing growth of China’s GDP
and consumption becoming a major
driving force of that GDP, as well as
internationalization of the RMB.
“We aim to provide a better living quality
and environment for the high to middle
income group in China through carefully
selected investment opportunities and
we have every confidence in China’s
future,” Mr Keswick concluded.
Jardine Matheson Group Deputy
Managing Director Adam Keswick and
Jardine Matheson (China) Chairman
David Hsu ensured that the Group
had strong representation at the 15th
annual conference of the Yabuli China
Entrepreneurs Forum (CEF), which
was held in Yabuli, Heilongjiang and
brought together top business leaders
from around the China region.
Held under the theme of ‘Market, Rule

covered topics, which included the
Millennial Generation, The Rule of Law,
International Capital Investment in
China, Media in the Changing Era, Real
Estate, and Internet Trends. In a high

High Level Meetings in Myanmar and Cambodia
Jardine Matheson Group Director Lord
Sassoon has had high level meetings
in Myanmar and Cambodia.
In Myanmar, Lord Sassoon together
with Jardine Cycle and Carriage
Managing Director Alex Newbigging,
Myanmar Joint Venture Partner
U Aung Moe Kyaw and Myanmar
Country Chairman Peter Beynon,
met with senior Government officials
in the capital, Nay Pyi Taw. Most
significantly, they were granted an
hour-long audience with Thura Shwe
Mann, Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw,
the lower House of Parliament. Their
discussions concentrated on the
development of Jardines’ business
interests in the country.
Meanwhile in a separate visit
to Cambodia, Lord Sassoon met
with Prime Minister Hun Sen at
the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh
and congratulated him on having
recently completed 30 years
in office. He also briefed him
on Jardines’ 15-year presence
in Cambodia.

Rights Issue of 251 million new
shares at US$1.26 per share received
strong take-up by its investors,
and raised gross proceeds of some
US$316 million. Jardine Strategic,
which undertook to take up its
entitlement under the Rights Issue,
also fully underwrote the balance.
The proceeds of the Rights Issue will
enable Mandarin Oriental to retire debt
and reduce gearing towards the levels
that prevailed before the acquisition
of the freehold of its Paris hotel. It
will also provide the group with the
capacity to finance the £85 million
(US$130 million) renovation of
Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London
due to start in 2016, and leave it well
placed to make further investments.
“The development strategy of
Mandarin Oriental includes the
holding of equity interests in selected
landmark properties, and a strong
balance sheet is important for the
execution of this strategy,” said Jardine
Matheson Group Managing Director
Ben Keswick. “It enables Mandarin
Oriental to maintain the quality of
its properties and take advantage of
further investment opportunities.”
Group Wins Investment in China Award
The Jardine Matheson Group
was the 2015 recipient of The
48 Group Club ‘KPMG British
Investment in China Award’.
The award was presented by
the Chinese Ambassador to the
United Kingdom, His Excellency
Liu Xiaoming, to Group Director
Lord Leach at The 48 Group
Club’s annual Chinese New Year
dinner, which was held at The
Dorchester hotel in London.
The 48 Group dates back to 1954
when a trade mission comprising
48 businessmen from British
companies became the first
Westerners to establish trade
relations with the newly formed
People’s Republic of China. Today,
over 60 years after the ‘icebreakers’
mission, the 48 Group Club
continues to promote positive
Sino-British relations.Right: Jardine Matheson Group Director Lord Leach receives the award from Chinese Ambassador Liu Xiaoming.

Mandarin Oriental Gift Card Demonstrates Marketing Excellence
Looking to capitalize on a growing
trend for gift cards, Mandarin Oriental
Hotel Group’s (MOHG) marketing
team designed a hotel gift card that
would be both guest-centred and a
profitable business proposition. The
MO Global Gift Programme was the
first to be offered in multi-currencies
with the flexibility of hotel redemption

has generated US$11.6 million in
sales through online and bulk sales
channels, while eGift Cards have
won the support of 73% of online

total of US$17 million in hotel revenue
was driven by the Programme, with
recipients spending an average 33%
more than the card value.
Innovative Thinking from Hongkong Land Reduces Carbon Footprint
In 2009, Hongkong Land announced
an ambitious green target – a 20%
reduction of its Central buildings’
carbon footprint by 2020. By the
end of 2013, Hongkong Land had
reduced its carbon emissions by 24%,
exceeding its target seven years ahead
of schedule. Achieving this required
innovative thinking and a series of
ground-breaking initiatives, as well
as the co-operation and support of
over 400 building operations and
technical staff. The range of measures
implemented not only reduced carbon
emissions, they also led to annual cost
savings of US$2.4 million.

7-Eleven Hong Kong has pioneered
the market with its launch of the first-
ever convenience store mobile app in
Hong Kong. ‘7-Fans’ provides access
to a variety of exclusive services and
benefits around the clock.
Binding technology with innovation,
the 7-Fans mobile app encourages
customer engagement with a series of
convenient services including earning

other exclusive privileges. As part of
the launch, 7-Eleven also introduced
online redemption of a 7-Fans exclusive

had accumulated a certain number
of points.
“Through these new forms of marketing
promotion, 7-Eleven Hong Kong aims
to create a unique shopping experience
for its consumers, while also changing
shopping trends and behaviour,”
explained 7-Eleven Hong Kong & Macau
Sales & Marketing Director Rose Yeung.
New Contract Deals for Jardine OneSolution
Jardine OneSolution (JOS) has won
two new contracts in Hong Kong.
In the first, JOS installed Cisco’s
networking, voice and security
technologies at a new IT support
call centre in CyberPort for Melco
Crown Entertainment, a developer
and owner of entertainment resort
facilities. The decisive factors in
the significant contract win were
JOS’ professional consultation
service on how to design the
overall architecture of the call
centre and its strong partnership
with Cisco.
Meanwhile, JOS Hong Kong has signed
a multi-million Hong Kong dollar
contract with food manufacturer Lam
Soon for a new ERP system.
Facing high demand from China where
customers like to place their orders
online, Lam Soon is rolling out Oracle
e-Business Suite/Fusion Middleware
to better address customer
expectations. The new system can
capture information in real time from
all Lam Soon’s sites in China, helping
it to improve productivity planning,
monitor utilization and provide better
intelligence on pricing strategies.

Dairy Farm Makes Strategic Acquisition in Macau
Dairy Farm has acquired the market
leading Macau-based supermarket
chain, San Miu Supermarket Limited
(SMSL), a strategic move which will
broaden the group’s food retailing
presence in Macau and complement
its well-established 7-Eleven and
Mannings businesses in the territory.
San Miu, which was founded in
2002, has 15 stores in Macau and
is one of three supermarket chains
operating there. It serves a broad
and diverse customer base and
is well located in the heart of key
commercial and residential districts.
The company also has an import and
export trading business from Zhuhai
and a wholly-owned subsidiary
primarily engaged in food processing
and bakery retailing.
“Growth rates for the supermarket
sector in Macau have exceeded
10% per annum over the last five
years,” said Dairy Farm Group Chief
Executive Graham Allan. “We are
optimistic that SMSL in Macau can
make a meaningful contribution
to the strength of our overall food
business in North Asia.”

Guardian Indonesia Delivers the Goods
Since going into operation just over
a year ago, Guardian Indonesia’s first
Distribution Centre (DC) has proved
a great success, particularly in its
support of the business’s growing
store opening programme.
Located 40 kilometres east of Jakarta
in a 20 year-old building, which
required considerable refurbishment,
a new warehouse management
system and the establishment and
training of a dedicated team, the DC
delivers health and beauty as well as
pharmacy products to Guardian’s 350
stores across Indonesia. The furthest
is Papua, 4,662 kilometres away
with a lead time of some three weeks
by sea and land. The total distance
travelled by delivery trucks to stores
since the Guardian DC commenced
operations is over 800,000 kilometres,
slightly further than from earth to
the moon and back. During 2014,
the Guardian DC dispatched 152,000
deliveries, with a throughput of 17.1
million items. It also successfully
rolled out a number of IT projects
including INFOR, its warehouse
management system, and Auto DC
replenishment.
Teamwork has played an essential
part in the success of the Guardian
DC and during this year, the Guardian
team will be the first to roll out ‘voice
picking’ within the Hero group, which
will deliver benefits in accuracy and
productivity as well as saving paper.
There is also a strong push to reduce
stock and improve service levels.Guardian Indonesia’s first DC delivers health and beauty as well as pharmacy products to Guardian’s 350 stores across the country.
JC&C Invests in Businesses in Thailand and Vietnam
Jardine Cycle & Carriage Limited (JC&C)
has made strategic investments in two
businesses in key economies in the
region, one in Thailand and the other
in Vietnam.
In Thailand, JC&C has acquired a
24.9% interest in Siam City Cement
Public Company Limited, the country’s
second largest cement manufacturer,
for a consideration equivalent to
US$615 million. Siam City Cement
owns three cement plants with a total
production capacity of 14.5 million
tonnes per annum.
In Vietnam, JC&C has increased its
interest in Refrigeration Electrical
Engineering Corporation (REE), a
diversified business group involved
in mechanical and electrical
engineering, real estate, and strategic
investments in power
and water utility
infrastructure, from
18.63% to 21.60% for
a cash consideration
of approximately
US$12.3 million.
The investments
are in line with the
three pillars of JC&C’s
strategy – to support
the growth of Astra
International; to grow
JC&C’s direct motor interests in
Southeast Asia; and to augment its
other interests in market leading
businesses in the region.
“These investments reflect
our commitment to growing
our presence in both Thailand
and Vietnam and provide us with
meaningful exposure to their
respective economies in established
sectors,” explained JC&C Group
Managing Director Alex Newbigging.
“We look forward to playing an active
supporting role in their long-term
development.”

Jardine Lloyd Thompson – Investing for Long-term Growth
FEATURE
Last year was a pivotal one in the
history of Jardine Lloyd Thompson (JLT)
with a number of significant initiatives
enhancing the stature and positioning
of the group. JLT established a
specialty insurance brokerage in the
US, formed one of the world’s leading
specialty insurance
businesses by merging
JLT Specialty and Lloyd
& Partners and created
a dynamic new force in
the global reinsurance
market with the ongoing
integration of JLT Re
and Towers Watson Re,
which it acquired in
late 2013.
During 2014, JLT’s
revenue passed
the £1 billion
(US$1.54 billion)
mark for the first time,
reflecting five years
of significant growth
during which the
company has almost
doubled in size in
terms of number of
employees, underlying
profit before tax
and revenue.
The Jardine Matheson Group has
been in the insurance business
since its earliest days, and JLT, in
which it holds a 40% interest, was
created in 1997 through the merger
of Jardine Insurance Brokers and
Lloyd Thompson Group. Today JLT has
more than 10,000 employees in 39
territories serving clients in over 135
countries through its two divisions
of Risk & Insurance and Employee
Benefits. This has been achieved
through a combination of organic and
inorganic growth, which has included
30 acquisitions in the last
five years.
“This success has been
achieved with a strategy
founded on the concept
of specialization and
choosing to operate only
in specific areas where
we have distinctive
expertise and knowledge
that both adds value
to clients and provides
us with a competitive
edge,” explained JLT
Group Chief Executive
Dominic Burke. “We also
prioritize those areas
based on where we see an
opportunity to establish a
top-three market position
supported by long-term
growth trends.”
Jardine Lloyd Thompson – Investing for Long-term Growth
Unique JLT Culture Underpins Continuing Success
Underpinning JLT’s success is its unique
culture, of which it is both proud and
fiercely protective, describing itself
as a 10,000 employee-strong global
company with the mindset of a lean,
entrepreneurial business.
“We reject the impersonal, big
company mentality that stifles
entrepreneurial spirit, commoditizes
relationships, dumbs down expertise,
loses touch with the client and lets
innovation die,” said Mr Burke.
“Instead, we attract and retain the
best people by valuing our diverse
strengths and ensuring they are
free to focus on the best interests of
our clients.”
While 2014 was an exceptional year for
JLT, 2015 has also been very positive.
In particular, there has been continued
good progress with the build-out of
JLT’s US Specialty business with some
130 leading industry professionals
now operating out of 12 offices in key
locations across the country.
“We remain confident in JLT’s
long-term revenue and profit growth
momentum,” said Mr Burke. “Our
aim is to drive forward in a way that
is sustainable and that balances the
interests of our four stakeholders –
clients, employees, companies with
which we trade, and shareholders.”

Driving Growth
In 2012, JLT’s Mumbai Shared Services Centre won the Grand Prize in the Jardine Matheson Group Pride in Performance Awards for facilitating significant improvements.
JLT has identified five core elements
essential to delivering its strategy
and driving the group forward.
These are growing its specialist
areas, building international
reach and relevance, providing a
distinctive working environment,
operating collaboratively as ‘One
JLT’, and improving efficiency and
effectiveness.
The first two elements take
advantage of longer-term macro-
economic and demographic factors
relating to the improving prospects
of both ‘developed’ and ‘developing’
world economies.
“Higher levels of economic
growth are both cause and effect
of greater levels of corporate
activity, investment and increasing
personal wealth, which in turn
drives appreciating asset values
and demand for insurance cover and
services,” explained Dominic Burke.
JLT is well-positioned to make the
most of these trends. The group
is already amongst the world’s
largest construction, offshore
energy, aerospace, commodity
and high-net-worth life insurance
brokers, while its Employee Benefits
business continues to expand with
acquisitions in 2014 in the UK and
Brazil and, in 2015, in Australia and
New Zealand.
Providing a distinctive working environment is key to attracting and retaining the right people. Last year, 950 new staff joined JLT.
JLT’s new operation in India, JLT
Independent, has a presence in four
cities across India with key business
areas including Energy, Construction,
Marine, Aviation, Reinsurance,
Employee Benefits, Credit, Political
and Security Risks, and Liability.
The other three elements essential
to driving growth are the enablers to
make it happen.
Providing a distinctive working
environment is key to attracting
the right people. Last year, 950
new staff joined JLT drawn by its
unique culture and the career paths
it offers. These include developing
future leaders through a well-
established International Senior
Management Programme and a
new Global Mobility Programme,
which provides high-potential
employees with developmental
opportunities overseas.
Operating collaboratively as ‘One JLT’
has included the implementation
of three shared services centres
to help share ideas and best
practices across the group. The
first of these, which was set up in
Mumbai in 2007, now engages with
JLT operating companies across
the globe delivering value back to
the group through a wide range
JLT is also geographically well-
placed in fast growing markets
such as Latin America where it
has subsidiary operations in five
countries and some 950 people, and
in Asia where it has 18 offices and
1,700 people, excluding its Shared
Services Centres.
JLT Re Argentina was launched
in March 2014 with a focus on
the specialty areas of Oil & Gas,
Property, Agriculture and Aviation,
while the establishment of a
regional JLT Affinity business, which
creates tailored insurance and risk
protection products, has helped to
differentiate JLT’s client offering. The
group has also continued to build
upon its well-established Employee
Benefits operations in Brazil, Peru
and Colombia.
of capabilities. It also acts as a
knowledge hub by providing market
research, analytics and IT support.
In 2012, the centre won the Grand
Prize in the Jardine Matheson Group
Pride in Performance Awards for
the significant improvements it had
facilitated. Indeed, so successful has
the centre been, that another one
has been established in Pune, India.
In addition, a third centre in Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia, which opened in
2013, provides services to JLT offices
across Asia.
Meanwhile, further
improvements to efficiency
and effectiveness have
included a two-year
Business Transformation
Programme, where
fresh thinking has
achieved total annualized
savings of £16 million
(US$24.6 million) for
JLT for total one-off
costs of £17 million
(US$26.2 million).
Risk & Insurance
JLT’s Risk & Insurance business,
which in 2014 achieved revenue of
£821 million (US$1.26 billion), up
13% on the previous year, comprises
its global specialty insurance and
reinsurance broking operations,
and wholesale insurance broking
business. Working in partnership
with clients, JLT’s specialist teams
manage the key risks they face, act as
their intermediary with insurers and
reinsurers, and provide related risk
management, analytical, advisory and
other services.
In the last two years, JLT has
entered a significant new phase of
growth. 2014 was the first full year
of trading for newly rebranded JLT
Re. This is now the world’s fourth
largest reinsurance broker following
the acquisition of Towers Watson
Re. Offering a distinctive market
alternative, JLT Re provides world-
class risk analysis, management
and risk transfer solutions to
clients across 13 countries with the
emphasis on innovation and superior
client service.
With the ongoing integration of
Towers Watson Re’s business into
JLT, the US offers new opportunities
for long-term growth. The decision
to launch JLT Specialty there last
year reflected JLT’s reputation, scale,
geographic reach and the strength of
its specialty capabilities, particularly
in Aerospace, Energy, Construction,
Credit, Political and Security,
Technology, Financial Lines, and
Cyber risk.
“As the world’s largest and most
dynamic specialty market, we see a
demand in the US for JLT’s offering,”
said JLT Deputy CEO Mark Drummond
Brady. “Our expansion there will create
a platform for accelerated growth
for all of our businesses around the
world, given the importance of the
US to many of our clients and their
increasing requirements for seamless
worldwide coverage.”
JLT Aerospace is the leading broker to the global airline market, with a 34% market share.
JLT USA is already making an impact as seen here in this demonstration of their risk management capabilities at the industry’s leading annual conference.

with several new acquisitions. These
include Liberty Asset Management Ltd

JLT Specialty Offers Global Expertise
Flying High with Aerospace Division
JLT Aerospace, a key division of
JLT Specialty, is one of the three
largest aerospace brokers in the
world, offering insurance and risk
management services to many of
the world’s top airlines and leading
aerospace companies. In the last five
years, JLT Aerospace has won more
than 170 new clients based on its
experience, expertise and integrated
approach in what is a challenging and
highly specialized market. Operating
across the world but particularly in
Europe, Latin America and Asia Pacific,
JLT Aerospace has been involved in
several high-profile claims.
Protecting Clients’ Assets
As part of JLT’s international Employee
Benefits operations, JLT Asia’s Private
Client Services (PCS) Division works
in partnership with more than 90%
of Asia’s major private banks to
deliver propositions that integrate
personal insurance plans into the
overall wealth planning of high net
worth individuals in the region. In
2013, with the increasing numbers
of such individuals, both in Asia
and elsewhere, JLT expanded its
operations by opening offices in
Geneva.

supplying them with industry
expertise, advice and access to
international markets.
“This merger has created a real
powerhouse in the market in our
chosen specialty areas,” said JLT
Specialty Chairman Adrian Girling.
“Harnessing both operations’
capabilities into a single business
enhances our ability to meet
our retail and wholesale clients’
international demands and pursue
JLT’s group strategy.”
Building on Success
During 2015, JLT has continued to
build on the successes of 2014.
This includes the development
of its operations in the US, which
are expected to require a net
investment of approximately
US$80 million during the period
2015 to 2017 and move into profit
in 2018; strengthening JLT teams
in its core and growing areas of
specialty around the world; and
completing the integration of JLT Re
and Towers Watson Re. At the same
time, JLT will continue to invest in
its Employee Benefits operations,
which are now making a substantial
contribution to the group’s revenue
and profits.
The market place is not, however,
without its challenges. A volatile
geo-political environment and weak
commodity prices are contributing
to a degree of uncertainty, which
is having an impact on demand
for insurance related services.
New energy-related projects and
investments, for example, are at
risk of being delayed, scaled back
or cancelled with companies looking
to drive more value out of their
broker relationships.
In spite of this, the overall long-
term growth outlook for JLT remains
positive. The group is seeking to
make further bolt-on acquisitions
where it sees opportunities to
strengthen its areas of specialization,
particularly in the faster growing
economies of Asia and Latin America.
It is also expanding areas of specialty
such as its strong Cyber team,
reflecting the increasing importance
of cyber security to clients.
“Our chosen strategy aligns us to
sectors where demand is driven by
long-term trends such as population
growth, ageing, medical inflation,
urbanization and accelerating
middle class wealth,” said JLT Group
Commercial Director James Twining.
“Our areas of specialization are
therefore set to be key enablers and
beneficiaries of global growth.”
JLT is actively expanding its Healthcare offering to take advantage of this rapidly-growing sector.
JLT has invested significantly in recent years to meet clients’ needs to mitigate the increasing risk of cyber attacks.
danger, and high-value collectibles. JLT
is a market leader in this field, with the
widest range of insurers specializing
in underwriting capabilities in the high
net worth market.
Leading the Market on Cyber Risk
Cyber risk is of concern to everyone
who uses the Internet with cyber
attacks, hackers and data mining
all posing an increasing threat.
In response, JLT Specialty, which
has had a dedicated cyber and
technology team since 1997, has
invested significantly in recent years
to build a comprehensive portfolio
of insurance services, which address
the risks associated with e-business,
the Internet, computer networks
and confidential information. This
includes access to specialist third
party services such as IT security/
forensics, legal representation and
public relations consultants, which
can all play a key role in containing
a cyber incident in the shortest time
possible and minimizing its impact in
the long term.

Gammon’s Environmental Excellence is a Winner
PERFORMANCE
Gammon’s Environmental Excellence is a Winner
Gammon carried off five awards in
the latest Hong Kong Awards for
Environmental Excellence (HKAEE),
which recognize great efforts in
promoting environmental practices
and management.
A Gammon-Kaden joint venture (GKJV)
won the ‘Construction Industry – Gold
Award’ for its dedication on the MTR
Shatin to Central Link – Hung Hom
North Approach Tunnels project, which
involves the construction of two cut-
and-cover tunnels over one kilometre
long, connecting the East Rail Line
and Ho Man Tin station to Hung Hom
station respectively. Challenging
conditions include nine stages of
key traffic diversions to facilitate the
construction of the tunnel below
Chatham Road North, working after
midnight in order not to affect the
East Rail Line train service and
removing the foundations of the two
bridges, which cross that line. GKJV
successfully avoided demolishing the
bridges by implementing a bridge
survey design in which the bridge
deck was supported on temporary
columns, both enhancing safety and
saving time. Combined with other
innovative measures such as pile
retaining design and travelling steel
formwork, the project has generated
significant benefits including the
saving of 371 construction days,
180 work nights and 9,510 tonnes
of waste.
Gammon also won two Bronze HKAEE
awards. One was achieved by a Leighton-
Gammon joint venture for the MTR
Express Rail Link West – Contract 810A –
Kowloon Terminus Station North in the
‘Construction Industry’ category and the
other by Gammon’s Concrete Technology
Department in the ‘Manufacturing and
Industrial Services’ category. In addition,
Certificates of Merit were presented to
Gammon for its Central Police Station
Conservation and Revitalization project,
and the construction of Lower Ngau Tau
Kok Estate Redevelopment Phases Two
and Six.

7-Eleven Hong Kong Joins Hands with i-dArt
JLT Charity Partner Udaan Celebrates 10 Years in Mumbai
7-Eleven Hong Kong has joined
hands with i-dArt, a unit of the Tung
Wah Group of Hospitals, to promote
social inclusion and creativity
through the artwork of local ‘artists’
with different abilities.
The ‘Shine Together with Different
Abilities’ project aims to offer
7-Eleven employees an opportunity
to connect with people of different
abilities out of the workplace. In
the initial collaboration, 7-Eleven
volunteers worked with ‘friends’
from Tung Wah, drawing paintings
together based on a castle
theme, while also freely adding
in imaginative creative elements.
Through this experience, the
7-Eleven participants, whose daily
work touches all walks of life in
Hong Kong, were able to appreciate
firsthand the unique talents of their
new ‘friends’.
To reflect the spirit of social
inclusion, the unique art pieces
were then exhibited at the i-dArt
gallery at Sai Wan, as well as
7-Eleven Hong Kong’s corporate
headquarters.
The Udaan Foundation in Mumbai,
a global charity partner of Jardine
Lloyd Thompson (JLT), has celebrated
ten years of making a difference to
the disadvantaged children of the
city with a musical of hopes and
dreams. ‘Meri Udaan’ or ‘My Flight’ is
based on the true story of Santoshi,
the first student of Udaan, and the
opportunity she represents for each
child of Udaan.
A large team of volunteers from
JLT’s Mumbai office worked
tirelessly behind the scenes
creating props and artwork
and supporting rehearsals
to ensure that the show was
nothing short of spectacular.

and independent young adults, Jardine
Motors trading as Lancaster, has raised
a total of £258,600 (US$386,700).
This was achieved through over 200
individual, dealership and company

across the UK including ‘Go Green

dances, sporting events and a casino

Porsche 911 SC was auctioned and
raised £52,000 (US$80,000) alone at the
Lancaster Whizz-Kidz Charity Ball, which
was held at its Colchester Maserati,

“This is a phenomenal result and far
exceeds the internal target we set
ourselves at the beginning of our
partnership with Whizz-Kidz,” said

Enthusiastic Response to Group Graduate Schemes
Enthusiastic Response to Group Graduate Schemes
Career talks at five Australian
universities drew an enthusiastic
response from Southeast Asian and
Chinese undergraduates keen to join
the Jardine Matheson Group’s graduate
training schemes.
The China Management Trainee
Scheme (CMTS) is now into its fifth
year with 11 graduates currently
holding managerial positions in
China. The Southeast Asian Talent
Scheme (SEATS), which was launched
in 2014, has 12 graduates under
training, two of whom already hold
management positions.
“These schemes increase the quality
and quantity of young leaders in our
emerging economies with the ultimate
goal of having more nationals ready
to run our businesses in the future,”
explained Group Head of Human
Resources Ritchie Bent.
Meanwhile, three Jardine Executive
Training Scheme (JETS) trainees,
Daniel Loh, Niall Westley and Tom

with Chartered Institute of
Management Accountants (CIMA)
‘Best Paper’ awards for their
excellent exam results. All JETS
trainees are sponsored by the

The 15 outstanding Dairy Farm
Singapore staff selected to participate
in its ‘Talent Development Programme’

The programme aims to develop future
leaders to sustain the continuous growth
and expansion of Dairy Farm Singapore.
Each TDP team was given a project to

being on routine checklist, stock
management, ordering efficiency
and warehouse product grouping.
In their presentations to a panel
comprising Dairy Farm South Asia
Regional Director Alex Tay, CEOs
from Giant, Guardian and 7-Eleven,
senior management teams, and TDP
mentors, they demonstrated teamwork
and excellence in the formulation
of innovative business ideas and
situational analysis, which earned
them encouraging feedback.
In addition to their projects, the
TDP Leaders had the opportunity to
participate in a learning trip to Hong

JEC Apprentice Programme Supports Strong Service Team
In order to provide prompt and
quality service to customers, Jardine
Engineering Corporation (JEC)
needs to maintain a strong service
team. A key factor in achieving
this is JEC’s partnership with the
Vocational Training Council (VTC) in
Hong Kong. For more than 25 years,
JEC has employed VTC students as
apprentices and during their three
to four-year training period provided
them with on-the-job training as
well as sponsoring them to attend
VTC courses.
“On graduating, these apprentices
then become the backbone of
JEC’s service team,” explained JEC
Executive Director – Human Capital &
Communications Philip Chiu.
One such apprentice, technician

Rustan Supercenters Work Towards Joyful Caring
Senior managers of Rustan
Supercenters Inc in the Philippines,
in which Dairy Farm acquired a 50%
interest in 2012, have participated
in a workshop aimed at bringing out
innate joyful caring qualities.
The first day of the ‘Joy-Care
Leadership Programme’ workshop
helped senior management
executives to align corporate values
and guiding principles with the day-
to-day management of respective
departments and the handling of
relationships with team members.
By the end of the session, the
participants shared a
common understanding
of the ideals of Rustans
Supercenters and how
they might be optimized
in managing people and
priorities. On the two
succeeding days, senior
management participants
were joined by their
direct report staff for a
combination of lectures,
structured learning and experiential
exercises, which promoted a joyful
working environment, as well as the
opportunity to share insights and
interact with one another outside
the workplace.
“When a leader genuinely feels
that their employees are part of the
extended family and derives ‘naches’
(pride or joy) from their success, he
or she enjoys in return the warmth,
love, commitment and willingness to
walk the extra mile,” explained Chief
Joy Care Officer Avi Liran, who led
the workshop.

facilitator, to help break down barriers.
“One of the most significant aspects of the whole project
was the combination of Hongkong Land’s experience from
around the region and its relentless pursuit of technical
excellence, with the commitment and zeal of the revitalized
team in Jakarta,” said Jakarta Land Deputy General Manager
Winata Siddarta. “A close working relationship was forged
between team members from a range of cultures, religions
and language backgrounds which delivered a product
of outstanding quality and cutting-edge technological
standards, whilst making the fit-out and move-in for new
tenants as seamless as possible.”
The results speak for themselves. WTC 2 was completed
on time and on budget by 1st July 2012. Since then,
construction has also begun on WTC 3, another state-of-
the-art office tower, which is due for completion at the
end of 2017. From 2010 to 2014, Jakarta Land’s financial
performance soared with EBITDA (earnings before interest,
taxes, depreciation, and amortization) up by 211%, net rent
by 268% and portfolio valuation by 324%.
“Through a combination of hard work and persistence,
Jakarta Land is now a well-managed company that has
overcome significant challenges since 2010 to achieve
superior growth with a solid foundation for even better
performance in the future,” concluded Will Bright.

In 2010, following the global financial crisis and a general
stagnation of the property market, Jakarta Land, a 50% joint
venture with Hongkong Land, decided it needed to move
forward in a more positive way in order to achieve its long-
term vision to become a market-leading developer delivering
international standards to its customers and improved
returns to its shareholders. The company had not completed
a new building since the early 1990s, but was keen to
begin work on WTC2, the fourth tower of its World Trade
Centre (WTC) development, located in the heart of Jakarta’s
business district.
“The team strategy encapsulated four key areas,” explained
Jakarta Land General Manager Will Bright. “These were
Asset, Property, Project and People management.”
Achieving success was dependent on building a strong team
to create a robust organization with the flexibility to meet the
challenges ahead. Subsequently, Jakarta Land restructured
its Operations Department, which involved expanding the
Leasing Department and seconding an Asset Manager from
Hongkong Land to head it up. From scratch, it also set up
a new Property Management Department, established
separate operations teams for each of the three existing
buildings on the site plus WTC2 to give greater attention to
tenants and systems, and set up a 24/7 duty regime.
The principal challenge was finding the right people who had
the necessary technical and people skills, language abilities
