‘PUMPKIN’ TO talk aboutQ: What do you call a pretty pumpkin?

A: Gourd-geous!

DID YOU KNOW?

This year, October’s night skies will light up with two full moons. The first day of the month brings the full harvest moon, and on the 31st, the full hunter’s moon will rise. The second of two full moons in one month is called a blue moon.

MINI PUMPKIN projectTurn a mini pumpkin into a flower vase: Slice the top off the pumpkin and scoop out the pulp. Cut off the bottom section of a plastic water bottle, then place it inside the pumpkin. Fill with water and several short-stemmed fall blooms or succulents.

RECAP: HOW WE STAYED CONNECTED THIS MONTH

celebrating grandparents dayTo celebrate our amazing residents who are grandparents or even great-grandparents, we gave goodies bags to everyone filled with homemade cookies and handwritten notes made by a children’s group, Kindness For Elderly. To end the day on a sweet note, we had warm and toasty s’mores, because we need s’more grandparents like them!

THIS MONTH’S heart heroHOSPITALITY, EXCELLENCE, APPRECIATION, RESPECT, TEAMWORK

To show our thanks for all her hard work, VERONICA has been chosen for October’s HEART Hero! We all know Veronica from her many years, nine to be exact, of great work in the kitchen.

Veronica is originally from Accra, Ghana, where she met her husband of 15 years, Emanuel. They had two beautiful daughters together; the eldest one is currently attending Texas State. Veronica and her family have been in Texas since 2011. She enjoys traveling to different Texas cities with her friends. Veronica loves kids, so she enjoys planning and hosting her friends’ baby showers for them. Other hobbies of hers are doing hair, shopping, going to church and cooking traditional dishes from Ghana like fufuo, a dough-like ball made from plantains that pairs well with okra-based soups.

Thank you for your hard work and dedication, Veronica!

IT’S OUR PLEASURE TO SERVE YOU … word from your leadership team (Continued)

Hello, my name is Dee Blaylock. I am a true Austinite, born and raised here. I have two beautiful girls, 16 and 10, with two bonus children, 14 and 18. I currently live in Leander, Texas. My hobbies are reading, preferably on a beach somewhere, traveling, anything to do with water, such as water-skiing and having fun with my children.

I have been in the senior industry for 20+ years. I have been everything from a Caregiver to a Community Director. I became specialized in dementia care in 2016. I have a BA from the University of Texas and a MS in Dementia and Aging Studies from Texas State. I am also a Certified Geriatric Care Manager and a Positive Approach to Care Consultant under Teepa Snow’s Program. I have a true calling and passion for what I do!
