Thank you for taking time to review the Sparrow Annual Report for 2018, detailing the tremendous work of our caregivers toward providing quality, compassionate care to Mid-Michigan.

The theme of this report is This is Sparrow and it focuses on the individuals and initiatives that made the year successful.

Sparrow is proudly community-owned, community-operated and community-governed. We’re not owned by a corporate parent, so every dollar we earn goes right back into our local health system. This is your health system and we want you to understand what we do and how we do it. Our patients and their families have great insights into our care. They are also the greatest advocates for our health system and are at the heart of why we are here.

There’s a lot that’s good and great in our 115 sites of care and we believe that comes through in the pages of this Annual Report.

I see moments of inspiration across our entire healthcare spectrum, from our Level I Trauma Center in Lansing to our local practices to our Community Hospitals. All are essential to covering the needs of the Mid-Michigan region.

I am personally grateful to live in an area with the resources available at Sparrow and that are outlined in this Annual Report. This level of care in a community of this size is unsurpassed.

As you read this Annual Report, you will see a health system adapting to the ever-changing healthcare landscape through innovative practices, initiatives, and careful use of our resources. You will see much more of that to come because our vision for the future rests on continuing to enhance our quality and improving the patient experience.

We appreciate you joining us in the journey as we continue to thrive and grow as Mid-Michigan’s premier healthcare organization.

HERBERT-HERMAN CANCER CENTERThe Cancer Center worked on dozens of clinical trials in 2018, researching care available nowhere else in Mid-Michigan.

The year was also spent preparing for our new ViewRay linear accelerator, among only a handful in the country to serve as both an MRI and provide radiation to fit the changing contours of the tumor.

Our oncology team also continued to cultivate Sparrow’s relationship with the Mayo Clinic as Michigan’s first member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network. Our teams participate in video conferences with Mayo physicians to discuss the most complex cases and share expertise. And as a member of the Network, Sparrow has access to industry best practices that have been researched, developed, and vetted by Mayo doctors.

Since opening in 2017, the Sparrow

Herbert-Herman Cancer Center has

established itself as a national leader

in the use of genetics and genomics to

personalize care and target the specific

characteristics of each tumor.
