The tradition of celebrating the Fourth of July with fireworks began with the celebration of the very first Independence Day in 1777. Today, fireworks light up the night skies from coast to coast as Americans commemorate their independence. Though these patriotic displays inspire awe in children and adults, thousands of people are injured every year while using fireworks.

Follow federal and state fireworks laws. Fireworks are illegal in Santa Clara County. ‘Safe and sane’ fireworks are legal for Gilroy residents only.

The safest way to celebrate is to attend an outdoor public display conducted by specially trained professionals.

Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers. Children should be kept a safe distance away from any display.

Do not experiment with homemade fireworks, as serious injury or even death can result.

Keep pets indoors and away from fireworks.

Avoid drinking and driving, and ride public transportation to a professional public display.

FACTSEvery year almost 10,000 people are treated in emergency rooms with fireworks related injuries. The estimated cost of fireworks related injuries exceeds $100 million dollars annually. Despite the dangers, few people understand the associated risks involved in using fireworks - devastating burns, other injuries, fires and even death.
