“Hello, my name is Robyn Challis and I’m the newMETA Manager at the Keystone DevelopmentTrust. META stands for Mobile Europeans TakingAction and consists of a range of services for the migrant Europeancommunities in Thetford based at The Limes, 32 Bridge Street. We offer aninformation and support service staffed by migrant workers who speak arange of community languages, and deal with queries on topics such asemployment, housing, training – any query that a migrant worker has about life in the UK. If we can’t provide the right information ourselves,we will refer clients to a service that can. On Mondays and Tuesdays, staff from Breckland Council are also available to assist clients withtheir enquiries.

Much of our work contributes to the Thetford Healthy Town initiative. META isdelivering a Stop Smoking Service to migrant Europeans and we are happy toaccept referrals from members of the public and from outside agencies, suchas GPs. We are also working hard to raise awareness within the migrantEuropean communities of all the health services available to them locally, andprovide direct assistance with registering with GPs. Thetford Healthy Town isfor everybody, so please do come and see us and find out about all the Healthy Town initiatives including Health Trainers, Health Walks, etc”.

Many of our Thetford Healthy Town projects are reallytaking off and we have had numerous good news storiesfrom various individuals of Thetford. One such case isfrom Theresa Carter.

Theresa started the Healthy Living Programme as shewas keen to be motivated and learn more on healthylifestyles choices. Theresa found the session on portioncontrol very enlightening and found chair exercise agreat way to improve health. After the first chair basedexercise, Theresa commented that she felt more limber, alert and invigorated and the walk home seemed to takeless time!.

Over the 10 weeks Theresa followed recommendedguidelines, discussed her progress weekly and a

significant improvement wasnoted in her baselinemeasurements. Theresa lostweight and her blood pressurereduced to normal levels.

‘I would like to say how muchI’ve enjoyed this 10 weekcourse. I have benefited fromthe exercise session and thehome exercise programme. We learnt a lot about healthyeating, including portioncontrol and having a balanced diet. Keeping a dailydiary was a very good idea. We also became moreaware of different nutritional information which is codedon products. I would like to thank Michelle and wish herluck for the future’.

Norwich Road Community School joined the Sustrans Bike It project in May andhave since gone bike mad! Since joining, the school has seen the number ofregular cyclists and scooters go from 10 daily to 45! On a particular ‘DoctorBike’ day, Georgie and her Bike It volunteer, Lee Woodcock, safety checked andmade minor repairs on 98 bikes.

The following week at the Bike It breakfast, 120 children arrived to school onwheels! One mother said “it used to take me 10 minutes to drive to school withthe traffic, but cycling takes only 5 minutes!”

Norwich Road teacher and super Bike It champion, Natalie Humphrey, has justbrought herself a folding bike from the Green Ventures recycling project and islooking forward to jumping back in the saddle once again.

The school are wrapping up the term with a bicycle recycling day, gettingparents to bring in bikes that are no longer used so that they can beredistributed to children without bikes.

If your school is not yet taking advantage of this fantastic scheme, then pleasecontact the Bike It Officer, Georgie Burr on 01842 757349 / 07973 128206.

Green Bat Boxes!

Determined not to be defeated by the rain the GreenGym borrowed the Thetford Healthy Town gazeboand set up camp on the BTO nature reserve tomake the bat boxes as planned. After the initialmeasuring up was completed, the hard workbegan. Normally these would be cut out using acircular saw, but that’s not the Green Gym way!Lots of elbow grease was needed to cut out all ofthe panels needed to construct the boxes. Everyoneworked together as a team taking it in turns withthe sawing. By the end of the session we hadenough panels to make up 4 boxes which will becompleted at another session. With the target of 12to make, a few more sessions will be needed. Ifyou would like to come along and help, have a workout and create new homes for bats, please see thecontact details belowJane Delaney, Thetford Green Gym Project Officeron 01842 757349/07836 624135 or [email protected]

The Bishops School get brandnew bike storage and look backon a few terms of Bike It!The Bishops Junior School was the first junior school to join theBike It project in Thetford and have enjoyed every minute ofbeing a Bike It school.

Georgie, Sustrans Bike It Officer said“The Bishops have gone from a school with only a handful ofcyclists to a regular number of 20.They didn’t used to have anystorage for bikes, but have recentlybeen granted funding fromSustrans towards the costs of theirnew groovy storage (pictured). Wehave run loads of bike it events atthe school, from entering a virtualrace, to having bike tea parties, to washing bikes. I’veenjoyed every minute of working with the children and staff, especially Carl my amazing champion at the Bishops and can’twait for more Bike It fun in the new school year”.

Clare Cook, The Bishops Headteacher said “When I first arrivedat the school in September 09 only two or three children rodetheir bikes to school. They did so in an unsafe manner and therewas nowhere for them to safely leave their bikes. Now in July 10we have more than twenty bike riders coming to school each daysafely and there is a place to store their bikes. What anachievement by the Bike It team!”

Tai ChiYou may have passed the Gazebo outside Boots and wonderedwhat the crowd was looking at? Gary Brighton, Tai ChiInstructor was there to illustrate the point that keeping activecan be preventative against many of life’s hazards whilst givingyour body a work out. Tai Chi is a fantastic way to improvebalance and coordination which can help reduce the risk oftrips and falls and is suitable for all ages. It is also a great wayto relax.
