The proposal for the building is an active living retirement facility that is geared towards retired adults of the Baby Boomer genera-tion. Research has shown that Boomers are interested in engaging activities that will help them live healthier and more independently in their aging years. They want to remain involved in community-based activities while continuing to live in their current homes. The building will consist of two tenants, residential suites and a public health and wellness centre. The residential space will feature con-do-style suites designed to allow the retirees to live independently and provide an aging in place home. The health and wellness centre will be open to retirees in the public and will feature active fitness amenities, educational classes, and promote social interac-tion.
By creating two separate functions within the building it will provide housing to Boomers who wish to downsize in their retirement and community-based activities to suit the Boomers who continue to live in their current homes. This approach to retirement living is inconsistent with current traditional facilities because it provides a centre that is open to the public as well as activities that fully engage the users while promoting their health. Current retirement residences offer less active fitness amenities and provide more observational and relaxed activities.
The Boomers want to continue participating in the fast-paced ac-tivities they currently enjoy and are not looking to adopt the lifestyle currently provided in these residences. The proposed facility will fill this gap and be directed towards the Baby Boomer demograph-ic who live active lifestyles and want to carry that mentality through their retirement years.
• A facility that focuses on assisting new retirees ease into their retirement lifestyle.
• Providing spacious, independent living suites the baby boomer generation can purchase at an early retirement age as their ‘aging in place’ home.
• Providing active lifestyle amenities that are avail-able to all retirees of the public that will allow them to age in their current home, while enjoying the social interactions of the community.
• Creating a mixed-aged community that promotes health and wellness to support the Boomers de-sire to live healthy and independent in their retire-ment years.
Create a mixed-aged public community • Permit residents of age 55 and older to move into the facility. • The facility’s amenities are open to the public, allowing for a mixed-aged community. • Creating an outdoor public square that will attract users of all age groups.
Provide an active lifestyle to retirees • Facility open to all retirees in the community and not just residents of the facility. • Provide activities where the retirees are engaged in, instead of observing while seated. • Promote group fitness activities to keep them active.
Help ease retirees into their retirement lifestyle • Provide educational interest classes to support their interests in various fields. • Provide activities that are currently enjoyed by the Baby Boomer generation.

The design of the facility takes an interior urbanism approach, combining the interior and exterior spaces to create a public square for the active retired Boom-er. Linearity will be carried throughout the planning, as it relates to the linear gradient of the landscape and the urban context of Markham. Design elements are used to express the connection to the community and outdoor spaces.
To define active retirement in terms of the new and future retiring Baby Boomer generation, and to provide a facility that addresses their desire to age in place where they can maintain their active and independent lifestyles.

Linear wood beams provide a visual connection between the indoor activities and the outside landscape. The beams draw the user’s view to the outside, connecting the retirees using the facility to the Markham community outside. The retirees continue to feel a part of the community and not shut away.
