THERMOPLASTIC ELASTOMERS TECHNICAL BRIEF
NYLABONDTM 7091
NylabondTM 7091 for Superior Heat and Fluid Resistance
• Suitable for a wide range of applications
• Superior to conventional TPEs, “soft” polyamides, and copolyesters in applications that require exposure to automotive fluids at high temperatures
• Bondable to Polyamide (PA)
BENEFITS
FEATURES
• Designed to withstand long-term exposure to temperatures
• Resistant to aggressive automotive fluids, even fluids at 150 °C/300 °F
• Developed for easy thermoplastic processing, including blow molding, injection molding, and overmolding
Engineers who design automobiles and their components are challenged to improve vehicle efficiency, appeal to regional preferences, manage synthetic long-life fluids, and meet extended service life expectations. A key element to meeting these challenges is to select materials that are capable of handling long-term exposure to high temperatures and fluid immersion. Fortunately, the NylabondTM 7091 Series from RTP Company is formulated for these challenges, making it one of the world’s highest performing thermoplastic elastomers.NylabondTM 7091 can withstand long-term exposure to the most aggressive automotive fluids – engine oil, transmission fluid, and lubricating greases – for the life of the vehicle, even when those fluids are hot. Developed for easy thermoplastic processing, including blow molding, injection molding, and overmolding, NylabondTM 7091 materials suit a wide range of applications, including: • automotive boots (constant velocity joints, steering, drivelines/propeller shaft) • transmission components • exclusion seals • air intake ducts and change-air cooler ducts • vibration isolators/mountsIn addition, NylabondTM 7091 formulations are suitable for many applications with occasional (or “splash”) contact with coolants or fuel. NEW REQUIREMENTS, NEW MATERIALS
Historically, thermosets and TPVs capable of withstanding 125 °C environments have been specified; however, many automotive under-hood and industrial components are now being required to withstand long-term exposure to 150 °C in air and fluid immersion for the life of the vehicle or component. As a result, many part specifications have been written to require materials to withstand 2000h or longer continuous exposure to 150 °C hot air and oil. Spike temperatures of up to 175 °C can also be experienced under extreme under-hood conditions.
For applications with 150°C exposure, like air/fluid transport systems, vibration/isolation dampening, and sealing, thermosets such as silicone (VMQ), polyacrylate (ACM),
and ethylene acrylates (AEM) have traditionally been used due to their cost-performance balance; but their performance can be lacking. VMQ suffers
severe volume swell and weeping when exposed to hot oils and cannot be considered an oil-resistant material. ACM and AEM suffer from long overall cure cycle, often involving off-line post-curing, and high specific gravity after compounding. Finally, thermoset elastomers are not readily in-process or post-consumer recyclable.
SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE
The NylabondTM 7091 Series is far superior to conventional TPEs, polyamide elastomers, and copolyesters in applications that require exposure to automotive
fluids. In fact, tests show that components made from NylabondTM 7091 far outperform components made of silicone rubber and copolyester when exposed to oils and lubes at 150 °C/300 °F. An excellent choice for a wide range of components, NylabondTM 7091 grades provide better fluid and heat resistance than any other commercially available thermoplastic elastomer.
