Lathan “Turns” A New Leaf

On September 14-15, the state ofNorth Carolina became a lectureground for Dr. Yosef ben-Jochannan—preeminent researcher,historian, Egyptologist, andproclamed “Greatest black scholarof the 20th century”—when he vis-ited the campus of the University ofNorth Carolina-Chapel Hill and theBennu Cultural Center here inRaleigh.

Dr. ben-Jochannan, born inEthiopia, Afrika, began our infor-mal interview by discussing hisbackground. He was born the childof a Puerto Rican mother andEthiopian father. At this time,Ethiopia was a predominantlyJudaist community: but his parentsonly allowed him to be exposed tothe Hebrew community.

' After moving to Puerto Ricoduring the time of westernizationby the United States, Dr. ben-Jochannan began to learn theEnglish language. The westernways of the United States did notappeal to Dr. ben-Jochannan and asa result he became a member of thestruggle for independence from theUnited States. Dr. ben-Jochannandisliked the racism in the UnitedStates, having never experiencedany form of racism in Puerto Rico;nor did he care for the capitalisticways of Americans. Unfortunately.Dr. ben~Jochannan and his counter-parts iost the battle and Puerto Ricowas officially recognized as aprovince of the United States.

During this time, Dr. ben-Jochannan began his speakingcareer. He started lecturing on the

The Department of StudentDevelopment recently added LathanE. Turner to their staff by naminghim the Interim Coordinator of thePeer Mentor Program the advisor tothe Afrikan-American StudentAdvisory Council (ASAAC) and theStudent Mentor Association.

Turner, who recently replacedDr. Rhonda Covington as InterimCoordinator, served last year as the

Co-Interim Assistant Coordinatorfor Afrikan-American Student:Affairs and the year before as aGraduate Assistant for StudentAffairs. Simultaneously, he hasbeen serving as the President of theNorth Carolina State UniversityGraduate Student Association.

Lathan received a Bachelor’s ofScience degree in BusinessAdministration and a Master’s ofEducation degree in BusinessEducation from South CarolinaState University located in

Orangeburg, South Carolina.Currently, Turner is pursuing aDoctoral degree in Adult and HigherEducation Administration fromNC. State.

Before coming to NC. State andto the state of North Carolina,Lathan served as Director of StudentSupport Services; advisor to PhiTheta Kappa (the colleges’ honorsociety); Instructor in the Business

Dr. ben also relayed his strongopposition to children not learningtheir ancestry from their parents,who often hand their education overto the hands of someone besidesthemselves.

He became known as a “publicwalking library”; the “man who hasstudied in every library, temple,ancient tomb, and museum in theworld”; the “man who would tellyou the truth when nobody dares’9[0.

Recently, Sista 2 Sistuh hosted aprogram titled, “I Dream AWorld— Growing Up Black andFemale”. The guest panelists for theevent were Dr. Nannette Henderson,a Resident Scientist with the Centerfor Research in Mathematics andScience Education at NC. State andthe first Afrikan-American femaleto receive a Doctorate’s degree fromNC. State; Mrs. Beverly JonesWilliams, a Staff DevelopmentSpecialist with Human Resources atNC. State; and, Mrs. LoraineWilson, an Account Representativewith Bell South.

The first panelist, Dr. NannetteHenderson, began by discussing themain obstacles she faced as achild—being overweight, havingbrown-skinned, having unstraight-ened hair, and being born left-hand-ed. She overcame her obstacleswith the help of her father, who Dr.Henderson feels is a representativeof the most influential persons in theworld.

Later inther childhood,Dr. Henderson moved into a pre-dominantly Jewish Community dur-ing the time of the Civil RightsMovement. Not only did the CivilRights Movement affect herlifestyle at the time, but the move-ment altered her life forever.

Dr. Henderson had the opportu-nity to attend a desegregated school

right after “the separate butunequal” law took place. She sawthis desegregation as a reflection ofchanging times in America, becausenow she had to face other races asopposed to the predominantlyJewish community she lived in. Asa bilingual speaker (Jewish andAfrikan), Dr. Henderson was notreadily accepted by her peers inpublic schools. Either she was beat-en by one race for being different orshe was beaten by the other forspeaking different.

Also, during this time the femi-nist movement occurred. One of thehardest obstacles to face at the time,Henderson states, “ was the fact thatwe were the first generation calledupon to be successful at both careerand family”. She feels that thechoice must be made between hav—ing a mate or choosing a career ifthe mate is not understanding orcomfortable with your position.

The second panelist, Mrs.Beverly Jones Williams, reiteratedthe speech that Dr. Henderson gave,but added that without moral sup-port from family that survival isvery difficult. Mrs. Williams wasborn in a community in which therewere very few Afrikan-Americans.

When she graduated from highschool and entered MiamiUniversity, she still encountered apredominantly Caucausian commu-nity but she pursued on. Williamsearned a Master’s degree and is

Similar to Dr. Henderson, Mrs.Williams also encourage young peo-ple to analyze their career and per-sonal lifestyles before they make adecision that can alter their lives—marriage, and to separate the job ofa family and work.

_ The last panelist, Mrs. LoraineWilson, took a different approachfrom the other panelists. Mrs.Wilson emphasized a strong spiritu-ally above all things. “A strongspiritually”, she says, “will not onlygive you spiritual health, but a senseof peace of mind”.

Wilson stated that she had thebest of both worlds because shewent through the process of integra-tion and she had a strong familysupport to back her up. She encour-aged the audience to achieve a highself-esteem if they lacked one andthat we as a people are created forspecial reasons and the Almightywould never let us down. Wilsonalso left an couraging word to saywhen she quoted Eleanor Rooseveltin saying, “No one can touch whatis inside of you.”

After the program, all of the pan-elists left the. audience something tothink on for a long time: “Who willtake me?, Where are we going?, andHow are we going to get there?”

New Faces On the Scene

What? Who's this on the N.C. State trackteam? More girls! In the past years, therehave been only a fewgirls who have made upthe girls’ sprint team.The lack of competitiorsgave way to more indi-vidual competition thanteam work. The teamwas unable to partici-pate in relays due to thelack of girls on the team.

In the 1994 seasonthere were four girls;just enough for individ-ual running and relays.However this season theN.C. State girls’ teamhas grown with thearrival of six new addi-tions to the team.The new faces include

two freshman and foursophomores. SunnyNewsome from StatenIsland, NY will be run-ning the 400m, 800m,and relays. NicolaBrown (Charolette, N.C.)will be running the400m, 200m and relays.Amy Rose (Greenville,NC) will be running the200m. Liz Wolff(Charolette, N.C.) will berunning the 400m,800m, and relays.Leslie Jacobs(Penbrooke, N.C.) willbe running 200m, 400m, and relays.The returning veterans to the team are

sophomore Fabrienne Rogers(Wilmington,N.C.) , who will be running 400m hurdlesand relays and senior Tammy Streater(Durham, NC), who will be running the400m hurdles and relays. Last season

Rogers and Streater ran some of their bestraces. Rogers completed a time of 63 sec-

onds in the 400m while Streater ran a per-sonal best in the 400m hurldles at 62 and400m at 58 seconds. .

The girls will be coached by TerryReese, who has been the coach of the

boys and girls sprintteam for the past threeyears. Reese also par-ticipates in the trackmeets, running the 55and 110 hurdles.

Also arriving on thescene is freshmanBrooke Campbell fromWhiteville, N.C. andsophomore BrookeWoodard from Asheville,ENC. Campbell will becoached as a highjumper while Woodard asa triple jumper. Bothgirls will be coached byGary Olsen who hasbeen coaching at N.C.State for the past eightyears. Olsen alsocoaches the long andtriple jumpers, highjumpers and polevaulters.

With these newarrivals on the track teamthere is no doubt that thegirls will have somegreat success. For the,,coaches and runners,improvement on individ—ual times and relays are

Different Types of Conditioning

As you look around the campus youtend to wonder how State’s athletesstay in such good shape. How do theydo it? The fact is, many of our ath—letes are conditioned. MerriamWebster’s Collegiate Dictionary’s def-inition of conditioning, “to put into aproper state for work or use”, perfect-ly desribes the goal of both our ath-letes and coaches. Although condi-tioning may be different for varioussports, it is one of the most importantaspects of athletic training.A common ground that most sports

teams can meet on is the weight room.There are two weight rooms availablefor athletic use on campus. The. firstis known as Weiser-Brown. Weiser-Brown is a newer facility with a larg-er selection of weight equipment, a 75running track and a connecting roomfor athletes to perform miscellaneous

activities. It is mostly used by both”the football team and the boys andgirls track teams. The second,Reynolds Colliseum, is frequented bythe boys and girls soccer , basketball,and gymnastics teams.

The girls soccer team practicesmost of their conditioning using thesoccer ball itself. Among keepingtheir eye on the ball and being com—pletely aware of opponents aroundthem, foot work is one of the mostessential contributions to their game.These ladies also go to the weightroom twice a week and, disiplinaryactions include situps and push‘ups.The swim team undergoes an endur-

ing two and a half hour practice everyday. Three days a week, they wakento a 6:30 morning practice. They runeveryday with mileage ranging fromone and a half to seven miles. At thebeginning of each run the swimmersare required to set a goal and come inat that goal(ex: 14 min. for 1 1/2

mile).The football team runs plays and 3

sets of gaspers(running across thefield and back in 35 seconds). Theyalso visit the weight room twice aweek.Track team members, during the

first one and a half months, work onendurance doin-g distance runs, abdom—inal and leg drills. They faithfullyvisit the weight room three days aweek to strengthen the upper andlower body. The rest of the seasonconcentrates on sprint work outs, spe—cialties and loyalty to the weightroom.Although the conditioning may be

different, the utimate goal for every-one is to produce well trained, pre-pared, and determined athletes. Bygoing to practice and completing theirexpected workouts, our athletes walkonto the field armed with training andthe ability to win.

The Proud Lady is the symbolic representation ofABHAI (American Beauty and Health Aids Institute)that stands for the pride, hope, dignity, and promotion ofeconomic growth within the Afrikan-American commu-nity. The American Health and Beauty Aids Institutewas founded in 1981 and promotes economic growth bypooling its resources and donating to the United NegroCollege Fund (UNCF), the NAACP, the Urban League,PUSH, employing thousands, hosting voter registrationdrives, etc. All of AHBAI’s programs are dedicated toeconomic and educational growth. It also creates a vitallink between cosmotologists, manufactors, distributors,retailers, and consumers. All AHBAI companies areAfrikan-American owned and operated and carry theProud Lady symbol.

Our dollar, the Afrikan—American dollar makes onetrip through the Afrikan-American community while itmakes about eight trips throughout other communities.This means that there is a great deal of reinvestment ofmonye in other ethnic communities. AHBAI companiesconstantly reinvest their dollars in the community—toput the principal of Ujamaa in action to create strongerAfrikan-American institutions. It is this principal ofUjamaa that makes cosmetologists, and all other con-sumers obligated to make crucial product decisions bychoosing proudcts that wear the Proud lady symbol.

Also, we must make the Proud Lady a household namethat everyone knows and respects by looking for, askingfor, telling friends about, and purchasing products thatcarry the symbol. To guarantee that the products youbuy are manufactured by an Afrikan-American ownedcompany, LOOK FOR THE PROUD LADY! This sym-bol assures the consumer that the company reinvests itsprofits in the community. [The recent problem with advertising is no longer oneof a lack of representation, it is a misrepresentation ofsorts. A two phase study that involved focus groups and500 telephone interviews with Afrikan-Americans acrossthe country revealed that:

-79% of Afrikan-American consumers said that it wasimportant to them that they purchase hair care productsmade by Afrikan-American manufactors

-77% of the consumers said if they which productswere made by Afrikan-American manufactors, theywould show preference for those brands.

Lastweek the Kappa OmicronChapter, put on a program enti-tled “African Americans inEducation, the key to success.”The speakers included HughesSuffren; Assistant Coordinatorof African-American StudentAffairs Program, Lathan Turner,and Ms. Anona Smith; directorof student services.

Lathan Turner stressed theimportance of role models forthe development of children.Turner graduated from SouthCarolina state with a BS inBusiness, and later received hismasters degree in education.Turner stated that he alwayswanted to give back what wasgiven to him. He also empha-sized the importance of makinghe most of the education that youare paying for, without lettingother poeple deter you from yourgoals.

Ms. Anona Smith, directorof student services, focused on

the children and how they shouldbe our top priority. Ms. Smithstated how educaitonal testing ofchildren only tracks themthroughouut their educaitonalcareer. The percentage of Blackstudents in special education is17%; 80% of this figure consistof black males.Only 5% of blacks are placed

into the academically gifted andtalented program. Ms. Smithalso informed us that these testsare not only used as a trackingmethod, but also to prove thatAfrican Americans are born withcertain educational limitationsthat don’t measure up to others.Ms. Smith serves as a supportsystem for black students on pre-dominately white campuses. Asa graduate of Old DominionUniversity, Ms. Smith knows thenecessity of a support system.

Hughes Suffren, AssistantCoordinator of African-American Student AffairsPrograms, focused on theessence of education. He statedthat we have been totally dis-connected from our true selves.“We as a people have ceased toeducate, therefore we have

ceased to be educated. If wedon’t know where we are com-ing from we can’t make it insociety.”Hughes stated that instead of

graduating educated, most of usgraduate mis-educated. Hughesexplained how “schooling” and“education” are two differentthings. Schooling is just trainingot maintain society’s existingpower. Education however istransmitted from generation togeneration with values andbeliefs from his/her culture.Education can be utilized ineveryday life. Hughes ended bysaying that we should be seekersof truth and always questionthings that seem questionable.

The program ended withclosing remarks from RobinSheppard. She closed by sayingthat, “One hundred years fromnow it will not matter what kindof car you drive or what kind ofhouse you have, or how muchmoney you make, but it willmatter what you have done for achild.” This is one of the manyenlightening programs that theAlpha Kappa Alpha Sororitywill plan to sponsor.

Culture (SAAC) sponsored a pro-gram, entitled “Do You KnowWhere You Come From?”, onSeptember 12 in the Multipurposeroom of the Cultural Center. Thekeynote speakers of the event wereDr. Opoku and Dr. Ashanti. The pro-gram’s focus was understandingAfrikan- American contributions butit gave way to much more.

The first speaker, Dr. Opoku, dis-cussed the portrayal of people ofcolor in history. Using an Afrikanproverb, Dr. Opoku stated, “Untillionsfive their own historians. sto-ries will always glorify the hunter.”In other words, until Afrikan-Americans take responsibility fortheir depiction in the media or anyother genres. negative portrayals willcontinue to happen. Dr. Opoku wenton to say when that happens AfrikanAmericans begin to see themselvesthrough the eyes of others. We thenbecome ashamed of our behaviors

and culture because we begin to relyon what is being told to us and noton that which we really know.

Dr. Ashanti then focused on thebrainwashing Afrikan-Americanshave encountered. A commonexample, as Ashanti pointed out,isthe word voodoo. The word voodoo,has connotations of being evil orwicked. A voodoo priest is someonewho is always connected with Satan.In actuality the word really means toserve God.

The major goal of the programwas to make students aware that theAfrikan American population musttake responsibility upon themselvesto learn their history and define whothey are and how society shouldview them. Ashanti urged students totake this time in their academiccareers to educate themselves andnot simply allow themselves to betrained. Real education comes fromthe student taking the first stepstowards self education and not wait-ing for some professor to give theknowledge to him. Afrikan-

American history is full of peoplewho educated themselves. Todayshould be no different.

Ashanti confessed, “We have tolook to the past to find the presentand the future.”

After the keynote speakers left,discussion of the portrayal ofAfrikan-American students contin-ued. Present at the SAAC pro-grammed were some faculty andStudent Government members;including Student President BobbyJohnson. The topic soon alternatedto the article appearing in theSeptember 12 edition of theTechnician; concerning an investiga-tion of the paper. Johnson gave aninformal response to the article andmaintained that he went through allproper channels for the investigation.

“Dred locks, braids,naturals, afros, perms,curls, and weave. No matter how it looks, hair isthe CROWNING GLORY of Afrikan-American women”,according to Ajuba Joy. Tuesday, Sista2 Sistuh presented a program, entitled, “Let Me Run My Fingers Through Your Dredlocks" thatwas not only about our ideals and how Afrikan-American women express themselves throughthose hairstyles.

Dr. Iyaliu Moses, Ajuba Joy, Makeda Morgan, Diana Ward, and many other interested sistersstarted the informal discussion by explaining the reasons for their own styles of hair.

Joy noted that after torturing her hair with “stuff” her entire life and discussing “locks” withDr. Moses, she decided to cut her hair and allow it to grow naturally.

She also pointed out that “the black hair follicle grows coiled naturally and will lock by itself.That is if you don’t do all that “stuff" to it. (Perming, curling, straightening)”.

Dr. Moses said she was inspired by “the great Bob Marley”, a Reggae artist and culture icon,to allow her naturally “wooly” hair to grow naturally agter many hears of different styles of hair.From inch-h-igh naturals to an array of wigs, Dr Moses says she searched for the one style of hairthat truly fit her.

In 1979, Moses said she allowed her hair to be “free” and it began to “lock” on it’s own.Moses said she found through her own studies, that the hair of Ethiopians and Ancient Egyptiansgrew just as wooly and locked as hers do today. ,

Sista 2 Sistuh coordinator, LiTasha White, relayed a story of her mother and grandmother’sstunned reaction when she came home with a short-natural haircut.

They did not shun her, but were very unaccepting of the haircut that LiTasha claimed madeher more “comfortable with myself.”

Diana Ward, a graduate student, decided to cut her shoulder length hair during her undergrad-uate years, she says, “perms were too hard to manage and too hot when I was playing soccer. ”Ward feels the hairstyle seems to fit her personality and her family really wasn’t shocked, con-

sidering she has always been unaffected by the negative opinions of others.The group discussed shortly how Afrikan-American women reflect the beauty of their

Afrikan-American men and vice versa. According to Joy, “Men have toaccept the state of mind a woman has and if he doesn’t want appreciate an Afrikan—Americanwoman who has truly and literally found her ROOTS, the n she doesn’t need him because hecan’t accept the REAL her.”

a new way of life. In our past, WhiteAmerica has destroyed the frame ofmind of the Black man with the per—ception that our history started withslavery. We have corrected this his—tory with the fact that our presencecame before 1492, and before thepresence of this country’s greatexplorer Christopher Columbus. that the lndians said they had gottenit from “black merchants...from thesoutheast.” Columbus had the goldalloy analyzed in Spain, and the goldwas proven to be of African origin.

Some scientists believe that theAztec and the Mayan civilizationswere really of African origin. It hasbeen dated that their beginning wasbetween 1150 and 1200. The Africandistinctive line of features appearedtime and time again in the relics ofAztec and Mayan civilizations.“Toltec” is an African name for agreat leader. It was found that thisword was used in these civilizationsto refer to their leader. The Africanscame not only with their bodies, butalso with great wisdom and knowl-edge.

The Africans influenced theNative Americans who are present inAmerica. It is believed that themounds of the “Mound Builders”were built similar to African forts.There is evidence of African cus-toms in Native American religiousworship. It also influenced theNative Americans’ customs of trade.This evidence helps to prove thatAfricans were present in America.

Columbus viewed the big pictureof the newly found land. His percep-tion of personal historical fame andglory perpetuated him to “put itover” on the world that he discov-ered America. Engrossed with hisidea of worldly fame, Columbus notonly deceived his sovereigns, but“sold his idea to the world.” Yet,what Columbus really discoveredwas modern commerce. “He cap-tured the attention of mankind, andhe’s held it ever since.”

Historically, Columbus is notalone in self—glorification. His story,as well as other great historians, hasdeceived mankind-with the percep-tion that Whites have the dominantculture. Sociologists have proventhat these ideologies have deeplyscarred the Black man’s mentality.Blacks in America carry in their psy-che the degrading idea that Whitehistory is the birth of our great coun-try.

In our grammar school classes, weare being taught these stories whichare genocidal to our young Blackchildren of today. Their youngminds perceive these false decep—tions of history as facts when it hasbeen proven that Africans reachedAmerica before 1492. Yet, why have

we not been recognized for our con-tributions to the world? Althoughthese facts have been published, whyare they not easy to find?

It would seem that many workson the African presence in Americawould be visibly located in our pub-lic libraries. The books They CameBefore Columbus and The AfricanPresence in Ancient America writtenand edited by Ivan Van Sertima arenot even located in NC. State’s D.H. Hill Library. Books of this impor-tance should be located at a universi-ty as prominent as N.C. State.The reviews on these'two sources

reflect the deception of what rolesBlacks are supposed to play inAmerica. The first work receivednumerous negative reviews. The lat-ter was published without a singlecriticism. It is very unusual for abook on this topic not to have onereview when Van Sertima’s firstbook had over fifteen. It seems as ifthese facts that Van Sertima hasfound are being ignored and per-ceived as being outlandish. Pleaseask yourself why is it so hard to findout about the contributions of Blacksin America?

The Minister Louis Farrakhanhas told us a million times aboutwho the cursed seed of Canaanite isand what they have/are doing to usand we have listened. We have lis-tened to the doctrine of the BlackIsraelites and they have informed usthat we are the original Israelitesthat were spoken about in theScriptures. Everybody has alreadytold us all about their ideologies anddoctrines which, of course, includeswhat the white man did, has done oris doing to us.We overstand what the “Evil”

one did to us: we see our conditionand how bad off we are. We saw:

the South African situation, theHoward Beach situation, theRodney King situation, the LA riots,the Ethiopian situation, the Floridariots, the Somalia situation and oursituation in America everyday. Wesee our own people of Africa ontelevision, frequently reflecting thegrisly horrors of poverty andhunger. We saw Jobo Kinayatabeing assassinated by his own peo-ple in Ghana where the “Evil” onewanted to overthrow him. Yet, weremained in this condition.We had our leadership who

reminded us of the awful state thatwe were in: the Marcus Garvey’s,the Leroy Jones, the HaileSelassie’s, the Noble Drew Ali’s,the Stokley Charmichael’s, theBlack Panthers. We saw the Dr.Martin Luther King’s and theMalcolm X’s and yet we stillremained in this condition.

There isthe Black Madonna Organization inGeorgia, the NAACP, PUSH, SCCand CORE. We even have the

We had arevolution in the 1960’s and lost.We attempted another revolutionafter they beat up Rodney King andmade a spectacle of it, yet we lostagain. We can’t go back to Africabecause they made it desolate. Solet down the Red, Black and Greenflag and forget about “going back toAfrica.” Not only is the land deso-late, but it is saturated with moreAIDS than any other place on theplanet. So we have no place to go.What now?

Sitting around in churches andmosques has not worked. We are inthe same condition that allowedthem to beat the crap out of RodneyKing. They still win. You’re still aslave and you’re still being abused.They continue to drug us up; andnow they are infecting us and givingour youth guns. They’re still killingus - a mass genocide. Yet youremain worshipping their spookGod, that doesn’t even look likeyou. Our world is getting worse.We are in the lowest economic leveland our music, culture and familylife is being destroyed.

If you go to any Nubian neigh-borhood in America, there is at leastthree bad things that I can almostguarantee that you’ll find: liquorstores, gun shops and a number ofdifferent churches. The problemwith our people is that we have thismentality that we have to fit in orbelong to something. Too manypeople out there telling you who youare and not enough trying to findout. Too many groups out therekeeping us from the right knowl-edge of ourselves and heritage.How long shall we wait for theblond haired, blue eyed God tocome from out the skies to ease oursuffering? How long will we sitaround with something that has not

worked? Isn’t it about time to trysomething new?

This is what we must do. Thefirst thing we must do is eliminate.It’s not about a revolution with gunsbecause they create all of theweapons. It isn’t an economic warbecause they manufacture all of themoney. It definitely isn’t about aterritorial war because they controlthe United Nations and the worldincluding Africa and Israel. Forgetabout any underground genocidebecause we have no control overmedical facilities. We spend toomuch time thinking that we aregoing to do something; but what arewe really doing? Nothing. We arenow approaching the time where wehave to become effective. We musteliminate leadership both political

and religious, that’s not qualified.Our political leaders must quit cry-ing foul when something bad hashappened to us and get out there andprevent any wrongdoing before theymay happen. Our religious leadershave got to understand the originallanguages of the doctrines that theyteach us so that they may read thescriptures themselves and not relyon the other man’s mistranslations.You say you’re a Hebrew Israelite,fine. Let us hear fluent Aramaic.You claim to be a Muslim, great,let’s hear the fluent Syriac (Arabic).We must eliminate all religiousorganizations that are not foundedby our own people. Give them back

to the slave master which means:so-long Episcopalians, adiosLutherans, good-bye Seventh DayAdventists. The Lutheran sectbranched off and is a product fromthe Anglican Church of England.Martin Luther broke off and formedthe Lutheran sect which was protest-ing against the Catholic Church orthe Anglican Church which pro-duced the Protestants. TheProtestants produced the Baptist,Methodist and Pentecostal. Then thePentecostal tied into South Americawith the African religion calledYoruba which created what is calledSanteria which is nothing but an

African Yoruba religion withChristianity combined in it. Youcan have it back. You can haveback your Christianity in its fullspectrum because it has done noth—ing for us as a people.

Islam isn’t much better, justanother form of Christianity. TheNation of Islam is still worshippingthe white image on a cross, only thistime he’s called “Master” W.D.Muhammad and there is no cross.So here we are near the end of 1994,having been in slavery since the

1600’s and not one of these organi-zations: Black Moslems, AfricanMoslems, Hebrews, Israelites,Panthers, 5%, etc. has found an solu-tion to our problem.We have to approach it from

another point because we have aEgyptologists saying this, andMuslims over there saying that andChristians saying this while theIsraelites are saying that. They areall confusing us as a nation. We arein a very bad way basically becauseof this confusion. Where’s the rightknowledge?We are in a situation where we

don’t look up and see ourselves inleadership. We don’t look up andsee ourselves as teachers. We don’tconsult ourselves as physicians,pediatricians and surgeons. We arenot looking at ourselves when wehave a legal situation where we pre-sent ourselves through lawyers orlegal aids. Everything we are look—ing at is the slave master. Stop look-ing for the slave master to get youout of this slump that you are inbecause you are always blaming himfor your problems. Quit reachingout to people who don’t reach outfor you. Start reaching fromamongst ourselves. Demand thatour leadership form counsel or getwith other leadership to determinewho is most qualified to be ourpolitical leaders and religious lead-ers. Muslims grab your Qur’aans,Christians grab ybur Bibles.Doesn’t it say that your Gods helpthose that help themselves? Theproblem is we have been looking forAllah or God or Jehovah or whatev-

, of “super lawyers,” DNA testing,and the acquittals of the Menendezbrothers and William KennedySmith, the notion that a man is inno-cent until proven guilty would likelybe superbly glorified, that is unlessyou happen to a Black man in west—ern society.

Not to say that the statement isn’ttrue in theory, but as the laws ofnature [and man] dictate, theorydoesn’t always hold up under thetest of the real world. These days, itseems that more times than not, thegeneral rule of thumb for the investi-gation of alleged crimes leaves morethan one African-American male atthe bottom end of the justice system— usually under the jail or worse.

I ask you to ask yourself thisquestion: does a man’s color haveanything to do with the truth?Unfortunately, the answer moretimes than not is yet. Either subltely,or [“unintentionally”] blatantly,when an alleged crime is perpetratedand a Black male is involved, thereare biases which appear that taint the

truth an ugly shade of BLACK. Theodds of that brother actually tellinghis side of the story on a fair andequitable basis (i.e., a two-sidedstory) are next to nil.How, you ask, can I make this

statement? Well, the Americanmedia tells us so, you local policedepartment tells us so, yourUniversity tell us so, and quite possi-bly (for those of you who live oncampus), your RA tells you so.How do I know? I’ve been there,

I’ve experienced it, I see it everydayon “Hard Copy’”, I read it in theTechnician, and the cop scraping myface against the bricks says so.That’s how I know (technicallydefined as a postiori knowledge, forthe intellectuals among you.)To paraphrase noted poet/writer
