Movement Toward Change

• Christian Humanism People had the ability to reason and improve themselves - reading works of Christianity would provide religious feeling

Erasmus- “philosophy of Christ” - People had to live good lives. - Faith alone could not save you

What does it mean to live a good life? Can you provide me with an example?

Erasmus’ writing, The Praise of Folly, stated that people had to do good works and have faith.

Opposition to Lutheranism

• Charles V- Holy Roman Emperor - He tried to stop the church from splitting with military strength - He was unsuccessful

• Peace of Augsburg - Lutheranism was accepted in Germany - Common people worshipped as their rulers did!

Other Christian Beliefs

CALVINISM• John Calvin -founder - predestination - by 1600 it became one of the most popular forms of Christianity in Europe.

ANGLICAN (Church of England)• Henry VIII – founder - wanted his marriage annulled - Catholic church refused
