Welcome back to a busy Term 4, please note we have included the calendar for Term 4 on the front of the Newsletter. As you can see there are many activities and this will be a quick reference guide.

Firstly I would like to acknowledge some outstanding efforts by students in the last week of Term 3. Congratulations to Nikayla Gore and Ruby Holden who were finalists in the NAIDOC Public Speaking in Wollongong - a huge effort! Congratulations also to Luke Diggelmann who was selected to be in the Illawarra South East Regional debating team - an excellent achievement by Luke. This year we have celebrated many successes with our debating and public speaking and I wish to thank Ms Danielle Sayers in her leadership and organisation of these events. It is outstanding to see how much our students have progressed in these activities.

Yesterday some very excited students went off to swim school and this will run for 2 weeks finishing on Friday November 1. Remember to make sure your children's clothes are fully labelled as we often have lots of lost property at the end of swim school. Thank you to Mr Hayden White for the outstanding organisation of swim school.

As the weather warms up in Term 4 it is important to remember our 'sun safe policy, students are to wear broad brimmed hats at all times in the playground. Remember 'NO HAT NO PLAY' it is also a good idea to apply sunscreen in the morning. As part of our 'sun safe' policy at school, sport on a Wednesday will now be from 10:15 to 11:15.

Also a reminder there is P and C Federation Meeting on Thursday October 31 at 6:30pm in the library. This is an opportunity for you to have a say about what you would like to see in our P and C. There is also a 'Suggestion Box' in the front office if you would like to put your ideas in and then these will be addressed at the meeting. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Thank you and please if you have concerns or queries please feel free to contact me at school.

Last term Luke Diggelmann went to Jamberoo Public School to try out for the Illawarra South East Regional Debating team. On the day he participated in various debates with topics like 'Male and female sports should have the same screen time'. It was a long and hard working day and then driving home back to

Queanbeyan afterwards. He debated alongside some friendly students from other south coast schools and ended the day not knowing if he had been selected for the team. However he received an email in the school holidays letting him know he had been successful in being selected to be a part of the Illawarra South East Regional Debating team and would be competing at a debating camp in Sydney in early November against debating teams from all other NSW.

This is an amazing achievement for Luke being selected from hundreds of students in the Premier's Debating Competition in our region, and then again from 1 of 50 who tried out on the day. This is a first for our school as Luke is the first student we've had to be selected for the regional debating team. Congratulations Luke and good luck for your upcoming debating camp!

Stay and Play playgroup returns in Term 4 to the fake grass area between the office and the canteen.

The P&C will be running their coffee mornings on

Tuesday, so you can buy a coffee before playgroup. Week 8: (3rd Dec) Join us for our End of year party! Even if you only came to playgroup once, or keen

to come along next year, all are welcome.

Bring a plate of food that is festive for your family - this is your chance to share your family's traditions with other parents and carers! Mel will provide fun

food for the kids.

Public Speakers Ruby Holden and Nikayla Gore who went to compete in Wollongong recently.

In the last week of Term 3, after lots of hard work, Nickayla Gore and Ruby Holden travelled to Wollongong to compete in the finals of the State NAIDOC Public finals. The topic for all the speeches was this year's NAIDOC theme: Voice, treaty truth. We presented our speech at the Novotel Wollongong, it was really fancy.

We didn't get a place in the finals but we know we did a really good job. We were very proud to represent our school and compete against 17 other teams from across the region. Written by Ruby and Nickayla

P&C NEWS

The P&C is extending an invitation to all parents and friends of the school to join us for a special meeting with the P&C Federation. When: Thursday 31 October at 6:30pm Where: The school library Who: Any member of the school community, you don't need to be a P&C member. Why: We know we can improve and we've asked the Federation to help us make some changes for the better. We have identified some areas where we need help but we'd love to hear what you think. If you have a concern, question, or suggestion related to how the P&C operates, this is an opportunity to have your say. What if you can't make it, aren't comfortable speaking in public or want to remain anonymous? We still want you to be able to have your say! As always, you can send us an email at [email protected] or contact us through Facebook messenger. We'll be leaving a good, old fashioned suggestion box at the office. It will be emptied on Friday 25 October and all of the points will be collated to raise at the meeting. You're also welcome to contact the school directly. We look forward to hearing your thoughts and working together to make the P&C an even better resource for the school! Thank you for your help.

2020 school travel applications now open

To assist with any enquiries you may receive regarding student travel applications, we have provided some information below.

Applications for student travel in 2020 opened on Friday, 11 October 2019.

Students progressing to year 3 and year 7 no longer need to re-apply if they:

• are continuing at the same school

• are residing at the same address

• have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.

Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification via email.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails

Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2019 to ensure student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after 31 December 2019, the system will automatically cancel an entitlement/card and a new one will need to be issued.

Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2020.

Students residing in Rural and Regional (R&R) areas should receive their travel pass at the commencement of the new school year from their nominated operator, this may be distributed via the school or sent direct to their address. Note: some R&R operators do not issue travel passes. Students/Parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.

Friday 25 October 2019 Commences 12.15pm in the Hall.

Gifted and Talented Mathematics Day

On Thursday 26th September Jasmine, Sam, Luke, Steph, Lachlan, Beau, Sunny and Nick represented Queanbeyan West at a Gifted and Talented Maths Competition. The day was held at Goulburn West Public School. Round one saw the students participate in a maths relay, the first question was challenging but our teams pulled through finishing all the questions in time. Each team also had a 'half day' challenge that they had to complete whenever they found time. After lunch the students had another maths relay and a silent problem solving challenge where they could not communicate through speech. The last activity for the day was a range of worded problems, where the students had a strict time limit to complete. Both teams showed great sportsmanship and resilience throughout the entire competition. The day was mentally challenging but rewarding and I was extremely proud of each of them, and it was a pleasure sharing the day with them. Adriana Edwards Teacher

Lids 4 kids My name is Noa Le Roux, and my daughter, Jade is in KM. We have a collection point for Lids 4 kids at our street library/pantry (Queanbeyan West Community Share). Di from the canteen has also been collecting all the lids the children return to the canteen. Could all families of the school please keep their lids for us and drop them off at the school canteen for collection?
