KNOWING (15)Rating: 5/10

Doubletakeonintrigue

IN the war against terror, thetruth is occasionally sacrificed atthe altar of perception.

Convince the media, and there-fore the public, that you are win-ning, and half the battle isalready won.

Writer-director JeffreyNachmanoff exploits the dispari-ty between fact and illusion inthis taut thriller of politicalintrigue and espionage, creatinga horribly plausible scenario fora devastating attack onAmerican soil.

Central to the nightmarish plotis an undercover operative, apparently embedded within aterrorist cell to bring it downfrom the inside, whose dubiousactions continually suggest anulterior motive.

Like the characters, we’re left inthe dark for most of the film asto whether he is double-crossingthe Americans to avenge themurder of his Muslim father in acar bomb, which opens the film.

A stirring performance fromDon Cheadle in the title rolemuddies the waters, playing upthe ambiguities in a character, who is being supplied with actu-al explosives as part of hiscovert mission. Who is conningwhom and to what end?

As the evidence of a covert plotstacks up, the two men close inon the terrorist cell, jeopardisingall of Samir’s hard work.

Traitor maintains a brisk paceafter the pyrotechnic-ladenopening, cranking up the tensionas Samir provides Omar and hisminions with the necessary toolsto kill hundreds of innocentmen, women and children.

Nachmanoff foregoes a barrageof action set pieces in favour oftense conversations between thecharacters, posing difficult ques-tions about violence as a meansto bring down the terrorists.

TRAITOR (12A)Rating: 6/10

BASED on a true story, Peter Cornwell’ssupernatural thriller revolves around aclose-knit family pushed to the brink byunseen forces resident in their new home.

Peter Campbell (Martin Donovan) and hiswife Sara (Virginia Madsen) move toupstate Connecticut with their family into

a beautiful Victoria home, which concealsa dark past.

The building used to be a funeral parlourand the old owner’s son Jonah (Erik J

Berg) was a conduit for evil, bridging thedivide between the real and the spiritworlds.

When Jonah returns to wreak havoc on theCampbells, they turn to local holy man,Reverend Popescu (Elias Koteas), to helpbanish the evil from their home.

It is no coincidence or quirk of fatethat you are reading this review atthis precise time. There are no acci-

dents or chance occurrences – every-thing is preordained, mapped out yearsif not decades in advance, and we arejust passengers on this invisible roller-coaster through space and time.

However, there are people among uswith the ability to predict the seeming-ly random events: extraordinary men, women and children with one thing incommon – they all hear voices in theirheads.

Mankind’s salvation lies not in thehands of governments, environmental-ists or the scientific community, but inthe ravings of the mentally disturbed, who are tuned into a frequency thatmost of us can never hear.

So claims Knowing, an apocalypticthriller from director Alex Proyas (I,Robot), which tasks one fracturedfamily with the impossible task of

unravelling the secrets of this rapidlydying universe.

Fifty years after a group of elementaryschool children bury their drawings ofthe future in a time capsule, a newgeneration of curious tykes opens thecontainer. Inside, young CalebKoestler (Chandler Canterbury) dis-covers a sheet of paper written by alittle girl, Lucinda Embry (LaraRobinson), which at first glancesseems to be lines of random numbers.

When Caleb’s widower father, astro-physics professor John Koestler(Nicolas Cage), examines thesequence, he identifies the exact datesand death tolls of every major catas-trophe to befall mankind. More worry-ing, there are three more sets of num-bers on the page.

Scientist pal Phil Beckman (BenMendelsohn) tries to dissuade Johnfrom paying any attention to numerol-ogy: “People see what they want tosee.’’However, a plane crash validates theprediction and John races against timeto unlock the secret of the final num-bers, aided by Lucinda Embry’sdaughter Diana (Rose Byrne) andgranddaughter Abby (Robinson again).Father and son become embroiled in aseries of spectacular, jaw-dropping,action set pieces as the plot twists andturns to its outlandish resolution. There’s no doubting Proyas’s ability toorchestrate mayhem on a grand scale:the plane crash is truly horrifying aspassengers burn before our eyes. However, the script doesn’t pack asimilar punch and most of the charac-ters remain blank canvases until thefinal frame. Cage hardly breaks asweat in the gloomy lead role.

The beautiful game is full oflarger than life characters;men of boundless desire, on

and off the pitch, who inspire life-long devotion from the fans.Key to any team’s success is themanager: the architect of everyhard fought battle between the goalposts, who must weather the stormwhen players fail to perform. In the annals of modern Britishfootball, Brian Clough remains oneof the most charismatic, bullishand successful figures. He is still the only domestic man-ager to win back-to-back Europeancups. In August 2006, David Peace pub-lished his controversial book, TheDamned United, about a tempestu-ous period in Clough’s profession-al life during the 1974 season.Friends and family reacted angrilyto the depiction of Old Big ’Ead asbullying and selfish. Those same loved ones have pre-dictably refused to watch TomHooper’s film, adapted for thescreen by Peter Morgan(Frost/Nixon, The Queen). Theyneed not worry.Steeped in nostalgia and blessedwith an endearing performancefrom Michael Sheen as the so-called “greatest England managerwe never had”, this valentine to theformer darling of NottinghamForest shoots and scores on manylevels. The film opens in July 1974 withBrian and his two boys, Simon andNigel, travelling to West Yorkshire

to succeed Don Revie (ColmMeaney) as manager of Division 1champions, Leeds United.

An impromptu interview withGranada TV, in which Brian open-ly criticises Revie’s tactics, declares war against senior squadmembers including Billy Bremner(Stephen Graham), Johnny Giles

(Peter McDonald) and NormanHunter (Mark Cameron).Flashbacks to six years earlierreveal the seeds of Brian’s dislikeof Revie as he, and loyal assistantPeter Taylor (Timothy Spall), takeDerby from the foot of Division 2to the dizzy heights of Division 1.The Damned United is anenthralling and largely affectionate

tribute to a man who wears egotis-tical bravado like a comfortable, old jumper.Morgan’s script elegantly providesbackground to the rivalry thatdrives Brian to the brink of self-destruction.■ Timothy Spall interview – don’tmiss Life! magazine free withSaturday’s Gazette.

Their first gig was at the DeafInstitute in Manchester lastweekend, where Blackpoolsinger songwriter KarimaFrancis also headlined earlierthis week.

“One of the best things aboutbeing in a band is forming aband,” says Tali. “That initialjump from rehearsal room tostage can make you feel as nerv-ous as your first date, even ifyou are playing to your mumand dad down the local disco.”

So in keeping with that tradition,Moonthief did in fact play totheir mums and dads down thelocal disco.

“One onlooker remarked that thefirst song reminded him of theend of a teen movie,” said Tali.“Well we think so too, it’s musicthat reminds you of that guy inthe corner, too scared to ask thepopular girl if she wants todance.

“With our romantic verse andatmospheric breakdowns yourears will be left in a wash ofdroney dreamy pop.”

Moonthief are Tali Febland,(piano/vocals), Ralph Fuller(drums) and Frederick Fuller(baritone guitar).

Bashir Rassas, who has run some ofthe coast’s busiest venues over thepast 21 years, is planning on sayinggoodbye to the licensed trade and iscurrently studying for a law degree.

The one-time general manager of ThePalace nightclub and Brannigans barin Blackpool is presently consultant

Bashir, who is coming to the end ofhis first year of law studies at BoltonUniversity, said: “I have seen thehighs and lows of the pub and clubbusiness and it is no longer a goodplace to be.”

He blames the last eight years oflicensing law changes which have

seen extended opening hours a banon smoking indoors and fierce com-petition from supermarkets.

Just which part of law he would bespecialising in when he graduated hehasn’t decided yet.

“But I met I’d Do Anything star JodiePrenger when she came into TheCube on a recent visit home and shesaid she hadn’t got a solicitor yet – soyou never know,” said Bashir.

British blues veteran ZootMoney blasts into BlackpoolGrand Theatre’s Lawrence

House Studio tonight.Listeners of Radio 4’s Book of theWeek will have heard Zoot’s namementioned as the first contact JimiHendrix made when he originallyarrived in England – looking to bor-row a guitar – and Zoot was morethan happy to oblige. One of the biggest characters on theBritish rhythm and blues scene, ZootMoney formed the Big Roll band in1961. Over the next two years theline-up settled into Poulton-bornAndy Summers (guitar), Nick Newall(saxophone) and Colin Allen(drums), with Zoot on piano andHammond organ. Before long The Big Roll Band, joined those other luminaries of theSoho blues scene of the time,Georgie Fame and The Blue Flamesand The Animals. Zoot’s shows werefamed for outrageous antics, tightmusicianship and passionate vocaldelivery. Two new members, Paul Williams(bass/vocals) and Clive Burrows(saxophone), were added to the line-up, and things really began to takeoff. In the late 1960s the Big RollBand metamorphosed for a whileinto the psychedelia outfitDantalian’s Chariot, sharing billswith the likes of Pink Floyd, SoftMachine and The Crazy World ofArthur Brown. The one single released was MadmanRunning Through The Fields untilthe fabled Chariot Rising album wasreleased 30 years on in 1997.A stint with Eric Burdon’s American-based New Animals followed, and atemporary move to the USA sawZoot picking up acting roles, startinga parallel career which has continuedever since with character appearancesin many high profile film and TVdramas.Zoot signing up in 1980 to PaulMcCartney’s label, MPL, to recordthe Jim Diamond-produced MrMoney.Since the 1980s, during which henotably acted as musical director forTutti Frutti, the BBC TV dramawhich first catapulted EmmaThompson and Robbie Coltrane tofame, Zoot has continued to appearregularly worldwide in his own right

with a new-look Big Roll Band, andas a featured artist with groups suchas the Spencer Davis Band, GeorgieFame and The Blue Flames, MickTaylor, Alan Price’s Electric BluesBand, Humble Pie, The Foundationsand Geno Washington’s Soul Train.

In addition to his live music and act-ing, Zoot is no mean songwriter – hissong It Never Rains But It Pours wasrecorded by Jimmy Witherspoon, forexample, and he has also written forsuch artists as Lulu, Maggie Bell andLong John Baldry.

In 2008 as well his solo gigs, duoshows with Papa George and his veryown Big Roll Band, he’s alsobecome a member of another line-up,The Hard Travellers, who play festi-val dates – celebrating 40 years ofthe spirit of Woody Guthrie – and healso has occasional dates with TheAnimals and Alan Price.

NewItalianmenu joinscampaigntobeatcredit crunchTHE Island in St Annes is bucking thecredit crunch says owner Paul Taylor.

“Since our refurbishment last year thewhole complex has gone from strengthto strength with a massive increase invisitors to both the cinemas and thewaterfront restaurant,” he said. “Therestaurant – which is now back underour management – recently intro-duced a new Italian style menu whichcomplements the existing CrunchBuster all-you-can-eat buffet.

The Crunch Buster deal offers anunlimited buffet, cinema admission toany film, a free soft drink to take intothe cinema and tokens for use on TheIsland’s tenpin bowling – all for £9.99per adult or £7.50 for under 10s.

Now simply part of The Island com-plex rather than having a name of itsown, the restaurant offers a menuwhich includes all the Italianfavourites – pizzas, pastas, steaks andseafood dishes.

“At the weekends there is a widechoice of fresh fish specials on offer asyou might expect from a restaurantthat overlooks the sea,” says Paul. And after a successful trial run lastyear The Island is bringing back anight of notoriously bad service.“Basil Fawlty and the team fromFawlty Towers return this year intheme nights that start in April with afour course meal and terrible servicefrom Basil and Manuel for £25 per

person,” says Paul. Also this year,Father Ted will be making an appear-ance in a murder mystery evening. With the recent conversion of the oldStanley Casino building into a func-tion room, The Island now also offersa choice of private hire rooms. For more information on The Island, opening hours and Crunch Busterdetails go to www.theisland.ws whereyou will also find current film infor-mation or call (01253) 722620.
