42 THEVVA VETERAN PHOTOGRAPHS BY GEORGE TOLBERT V VA’s West Virginia State Council sponsored a Salsa Social fundraiser on May 16 in Silver Spring Maryland. The evening of Latin Music and dancing featured Rafael Ortiz and Tito Puente, Jr. Army SFC Ortiz, who is stationed at Ft. Meade, Maryland, conceived of the idea as a way to do something special for Viet- nam veterans. More than $4,400 was raised through donations and sponsorships, all of which will go to VVA’s Veterans Against Drugs program and the national office’s annual winter coat do- nation for homeless veterans. Dave Simmons, the President of the West Virginia State Council, and VVA national office staffers Deborah Williams and Sharon Hodge organized the event.Ω Rafael Ortiz presented Deborah Williams and Sharon Hodge with more than $4,400 from the Salsa Social. Above: The evening started slow and easy, with Victor H. Maysonet taking folks through basic salsa steps. Later, things got hot; Below: Maysonet and DJ Hercules made sure the music never stopped.
