The Session of Germantown Presbyterian Church (GPC) has approved the naming of the new church library to honor Rev. Dr. Ernest H. Mellor for his years of faithful service to the church.

Dr. Mellor was a Presbyterian missionary to Brazil from 1958 to 1963. He and his family moved to Germantown in 1963. He served the GPC as senior pastor from June 1963 to June 1973. Dr. Mellor established the Pastoral Counseling Center of Greater Memphis in 1973 and retired from there in 1995. He served as interim pastor for various churches in the Memphis Presbytery before he returned to the GPC to serve as Parish Associate from 1995 to 2005.

The Session has set Father’s Day, Sunday, June 17, 2012, to honor Dr. Mellor with a dedication ceremony immedi-ately following the second church service on that day. The Rev. Dr. William Jones will preside at the ceremony that will be held in the Church Activity Center. The church’s Presbyterian Women will serve light refreshments. The entire church membership is invited to attend.

Dr. Mellor and his wife, Lalla, have touched many lives at GPC during the years of their devoted service to the church and beyond. The naming of the library is a way to say “thank you” to each of them and to provide a lasting recognition of that dedicated service.

New Stephen Ministers Commissioned June 3

On June 3, 2012, GPC will commission eight new Ste-phen Ministers at the 11:00 a.m. worship service. They are Susan Bryant, Richard Goughnour, Tamah Halfacre, Susan Harris, Amy Phillips, Ann Reed, Ashley Robinson, and Don Willingham.

These eight individuals have completed 50 hours of specialized training in Christian caregiving and will join a team of 10 Stephen Ministers at GPC. Stephen Ministers provide confidential one-to-one Christian care to people experiencing a crisis or going through a difficult time. Stephen Ministers meet weekly with their care receivers for about an hour to listen, care, encourage, pray and to provide emotional and spiritual support. Caring relation-ships last for as long as the person’s need persists.

Our new Stephen Ministers met on Monday evenings from January through May and were trained by Stephen Lead-ers Barbara Armstrong, Carol Barnes, Anne Culver, and Barb Poier. Additional teachers were Dr. Will Jones, Rev. Norlita Kaul, Rev. Rod Spencer of Samaritan Counseling Center, as well as local professionals who were brought in for specific topics. This group of new Stephen Ministers has displayed an unusual passion for this ministry and will be a huge asset to the ministry at GPC.

The Stephen Ministries organization is based in St. Louis and serves more than 11,000 congregations representing 150 Christian denominations worldwide.

Please lift up our new Stephen Ministers in your prayers, asking that God richly bless their ministry and work through them to bring hope and healing to those whom they will serve. Pray also for the continued ministry of GPC’s other Stephen Ministers and those for whom they care.

Presbyterian Women

Please join the Presbyterian Women of GPC on June 19 at 10:00 am in Warren Hall. The guest speaker will be Pam Beasley, Director of Parks and Recreation for the city of Germantown. The city purchased a 10 acre suburban farm now known as the Bobby Lanier Farm Park. This park will provide many opportunities as a demonstration site and outdoor classroom. Please come hear Pam explain an overview of the project master plan, discuss program plans, the community garden and future development—all named after our very own Bobby Lanier! Come and enjoy fellowship and a delicious lunch provided by Ramona Seabold’s circle. There will be no coordinating team meeting before gathering.

We were entertained by the ladies of Martha’s Manor last month. For the month of June, they are in need of already prepared jello and cookies. Food Collections this month are canned fruits and fruit juices. Project Outreach donations are canned fruits and juices. The donation bins are in the Activity Center.

Threads of Love will take a quick summer break and meet again on Tuesday, August 14. They will begin making scarves and hats for Perea preschool, and continue making walker bags, bibs, and mastectomy/heart surgery pillows. Non-sewers needed for ironing and cutting.

Presbyterian Women will continue their mission efforts throughout the summer collecting items for Johnson’s Auxiliary and Project Outreach. Each circle will be given a list of needed items. The circle leaders will be contacting you with needed information.

Youth Sunday1 Timothy 4:1212 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.

Sunday, April 15, the youth led both Sunday services in worship and music. The se-niors who read Scripture and shared their reflections were: Carolyn Dellinger, Elizabeth Jones, Abby Powell, J.C. Russell, Ali Slott, and Kaylie Warren. Thank you, youth, for leading your church family and for sharing your growth as Christians within the GPC body of Christ.

The full list of graduating seniors follows: Laura Castleman, Jackson Darr, Carolyn Dellinger, Sarah Freeman, Elizabeth Jones, Sarah Langsdon, Harry Madison, Megan Miller, Abby Powell, J. C. Russell, Tyler Russell, Emily Shorter, Ali Slott, Kaylie War-ren, Andrew Wilensky, Shawn Younkin.

Please continue to pray for all youth and the graduating seniors as they go forward into the world with words from Jeremiah 1 in mind –

4 Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you…; 7 But the LORD said to me,

“Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the LORD.” 9 Then the LORD put out his hand and touched my mouth. And the LORD said to me, “Behold, I have put my words in your mouth....”

Germantown Presbyterian Church 2363 Germantown Road, South Germantown, TN 38138

Dear Germantown Friends.

We are thankful for your continuing and generous support of our goals and mission to provide assistance to the homeless of Memphis and Shelby County. We want to thank you for your very generous donation.

Your ongoing support of the ministry here at MIHN helps to alleviate the cycle of homelessness. Because of your help and support, we can provide hope to the families we serve by assisting them in their search to find permanent employment and appropriate housing.

Any goods or services to the donor consisted entirely of intan-gible religious benefits. Again, we appreciate your kindness.

Sincerely,

Amy L. Barnes Executive Director

Lifeblood and the GPC Lifeblood Com-mittee would like to thank those who participated in our most recent blood drive held on May 6th, as well as those who made a donation at a donor center since our previous drive:

Our next drive will be July 15th.

VOLUME 130 June, 2012Summer Youth Intern

Germantown Presbyterian Church welcomes sum-mer youth intern James Clark from Aberdeen Scot-land. James graduated this year from the University of Aberdeen with a law degree. Before graduating he was involved in the BP Tutoring Scheme which allowed him to go into a local primary school on a weekly basis for ten weeks to help the teacher with general duties and to provide individual support for pupils in the classroom. He was involved with the Aberdeen University student-run legal aid group Casus Omissus, where he prepared reports on legal aid and social housing in Aberdeen for the group.

He has served as a Youth Leader at The Samuel Trust: an outreach to primary school children from priority areas at the Mission Church, Aberdeen. He worked within the team to deliver the weekly kids club program, giving talks and leading game, building relationships with the children, doing school assem-blies and visiting the children’s families on a weekly basis. Children and youth work at his church allowed him to lead and organize various after school clubs, holiday clubs, school groups and Sunday events for children and young people at churches in Edinburgh and Aberdeen. He also served as a leader at Scripture Union camps during the summer holidays. During summer 2009 he spent two weeks volunteering in a children’s centre in Maputo, Mozambique, involved in the care of three- to five-year-old orphans. He was also part of outreach teams reaching into hospitals, dumpsites and to street children.

His hobbies and interests are running and spending time with friends. He will be interning with GPC through June 29 and staying with the Bagbys, so please find James and make him welcome in the GPC family. Anyone interested in hosting James for a meal during his stay, please contact the church office by phone (754-5195) or email ([email protected]).

Down by the Creek BankThe Children’s Choir traveled “Down by the Creek Bank” on Sunday, May 13 glorifying God and bless-ing the congregation with their musical talent.

The Vine Schedule Change

The Vine is GPC’s newsletter for publicizing church events and for communicating important aspects of church life. The Vine is now being published once a month, and it will be mailed on the last Wednesday of each month so that all of the following month’s events can be known. The new dead-line for The Vine will be the 3rd Monday of each month. Articles may be submitted by email to [email protected].

Flower Committee Request For VasesThe Flower Committee needs small vases for its Petals and Prayers Ministry. Please bring them to the flower room, next to the choir loft. Any vase larger than a bud vase that is transportable in an auto cup holder would be very much appreciated.

Petals and Prayers invites our members and ministers to help themselves to small arrangements of flowers in the cooler of the flower room. These small vases are made up weekly, either Sunday afternoon or Monday, to be taken to those in need.

Thank you so much!

The GPC Flower Committee
