Held over the May Bank Holiday, the 2012 line-up features starlet Paloma Faith as Artist in Residence and the return of jazz superstar Jamie Cullum as Guest Director. The Festival also moves to its new location in Montpellier Gardens, and features a brand new Big Top venue, free outdoor stage, boutique cinema, interactive Music Lab – a musical discover zone - and a host of bars and cafes. The perfect backdrop to the world’s greatest jazz performers.

Paloma leads a line-up of outstanding singers, all playing in the brand new Big Top – a purpose built seated venue in the heart of the gardens. Grammy-nominated singer Melody Gardot will be performing material from her hotly anticipated new album and The Puppini Sisters promise a sprinkling of 1940s glamour with their sweetly charming vocal harmonies.

On the Friday evening, the Big Top will play host to a celebration of the music of Ray Charles in a unique live edition of BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night. Featuring vocalist Gregory Porter and other special guests, including Madeline Bell and James Tormé, it promises to be a really outstanding Cheltenham exclusive.

The weekend’s highlights also include a blend of soul, funk and R’n’B from superstar bassist Marcus Miller; guitar supremo Bill Frisell who will perform a mix of jazz, folk and blues alongside more uptempo and infectious rhythms with his Beautiful Dreamers Trio; and a showcase of the UK’s finest rising talents as Juan Zelada and Miss 600 perform in a double bill of jazz tinged pop.

You know you’ve made it when you’re the answer to a trivia question on TV quiz show Eggheads, or so says jazz sweetheart Paloma Faith.

Others might say her debut album, Do You Want the Truth or Something Beautiful?, going Platinum was a better indicator of her success, but then Paloma isn’t quite like everyone else.

Aged just 26, Paloma has gone from shop assistant to magician’s assistant to a chart-topping singer with a sideline in acting in Oscar-nominated films. There seems to be no stopping music’s kookiest star as she now turns her hand to being the Artist in Residence at Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

As Artist in Residence, Paloma has invited some of her favorite artists to perform at Cheltenham, including pop icon Candi Staton.

“Her back catalogue of work is huge, and I don’t think people really know how brilliant she is,” explained Paloma. “She has kind of an early disco background, but she’s also really soulful and energetic.”

Paloma has also been busy helping to put together a contemporary film programme for the Festival’s new on-site Screening Rooms cinema in Montpellier Gardens, and will be popping in to chat about her appearance in the film ‘A Nice Touch’.

Finally, in a world exclusive, Paloma will be performing at the Jazz Festival with the Guy Barker Orchestra on Monday 7 May, treating the audience to previously unheard material from her new album and paying homage to some of her favourite artists.

Their debut single ‘Twist’ was released in July 2011 and spent seven weeks on the BBC Radio 2 A list and achieved over 3000 plays on UK radio. It was the eleventh most played track on Radio 2 during the third quarter of 2011 and also reached the Top Thirty on the UK independent Singles Sales Chart.

They followed up this success with their next single ‘Typically Me’ which enjoyed 6 weeks on the play list and to date has had nearly 1000 plays on UK Radio.

Their debut album ‘Buying Time’, which is out now, showcases their talent for simple catchy pop tunes with a jazz twist and includes collaborations with Maxi Priest, Sam Beeton, Sonna Rele and legendary film composer Ennio Morricone.

Miss 600 are performing at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival on Sunday 6 May at 2.30pm.

For a country with a population of just under five million, Norway’s reputation as a creative hub of European jazz has never been stronger. Thus Cheltenham Jazz Festival’s hugely successful Norwegian music strand has sought to strengthen cultural bonds between our two countries and has produced many memorable moments. From the inaugural 2010 performances by the funky Beady Belle, mesmerising electronic soundscapes from Ian Ballamy and Thomas Strønen’s Food, to last year’s stunning shows by stellar solo guitar maestro Stian Westerhus and acclaimed pianist Tord Gustavsen. While the gifted undergraduates from the Trondheim Jazz Exchange proved a hit with both audiences and musicians alike, especially at the thrilling late night jams.

This year three more compelling artists bring their distinctly Nordic perspective to bear on the art of modern music making. First among these is

singer songwriter and avant noise explorer Hilde Marie Kjersem who creates a bewitching mix of exquisitely melancholic originals and equally plaintive re-workings of pop songs. Kjersem’s slow, meditative and emotive storytelling style effortlessly borrows from jazz as much as it does country, pop and rock.

The Helge Lien Trio have emerged as one of the most exciting piano groups of the last few years with their intricate classical-meets-rock passages with airy folk flourishes, all encapsulated on their breakthrough 2008 album Hello Troll and last year’s meditative Natsukashii. Pianist Lien’s melodic lyricism and playful improvisations link intuitively with the hugely adept rhythm section bassist Frode Berg and drummer Knut Aalefjær, with spellbinding results.

Completing this year’s trio of talents is rising star saxophonist Hanna Paulsberg who first appeared at Cheltenham as part of the

first Trondheim Jazz Exchange. As evidence of her fast maturing musicianship she’s appearing with her fiery free-bopping jazz quartet that’s the perfect vehicle for her cascading warm-toned solos while the current crop of Trondheim jazz students also appear.

All three bring heat and light from this often frozen country that shines as a beacon of musical excellence and innovation.

On bank holiday Monday 7 May the Cheltenham Jazz Festival will host the final of the prestigious Yamaha Jazz Experience Competition, with nine of the UK’s finest youth jazz ensembles taking to the Free Stage in Montpellier Gardens between 1pm and 3.30pm.

The finalists will perform before a judging panel including: Julian Joseph (acclaimed jazz pianist), Peter Ind (legendary jazz double bass player), Richard Michael (2009 Parliamentary Jazz ‘Jazz Educator’ award winner), Issie Barratt (National Youth Jazz Collective’s founder and artistic director) and

Gwilym simcock (international jazz pianist and composer).

The judging panel will then choose one winner from each age category, looking carefully for creativity, musicality and communication before announcing the winners who will receive vouchers for Yamaha prizes

for their schools or educational institution, along with prestigious gigs at major London jazz venues.

24 year old, Manchester born Alexander Stewart is one of the Verve artists taking to the stage on Saturday 5 May. His warm, urgent voice shows off his early love

of Billie Holiday and Tony Bennett, and that combined with his judiciously off-beat choice of material and a decidedly contemporary energy level has ensured that his talent is generating a lot of buzz in the jazz world.

Second to last on the Sunday programme, Louise and the Pins have already made an imprint on the live scene, having played with the likes of Martha Wainwright and Laura Marling. Wakefield born Louise Hull describes her sound as rockabilly, with a strong torch singer element: “I want to bring people into my world…I want to hurt their hearts and I want to create music that makes people feel something; real music.”

Cheltenham is celebrating the arrival of the Olympic torch on Wednesday 23 May with a free event at Cheltenham Racecourse.

The evening will revolve around a free stage show featuring a mix of music and dance. There will also be a showcase of sporting and cultural talent from local clubs, dance groups, youth theatre and community groups. The highlight of the evening will be the arrival of the Olympic flame and the symbolic lighting of the Olympic cauldron.

This free event is presented in collaboration with Cheltenham Borough Council, Create Gloucestershire, Active Gloucestershire, Cheltenham Festivals, Cheltenham Racecourse and the London 2012 Organising Committee.

The Bandwagon, a bus carrying musicians from Gloucestershire secondary schools, aims to sweep away the stuffy atmosphere of the concert hall, enabling young children to experience at first hand the passion, inspiration and enjoyment that live music can bring.

St. Thomas More Catholic Primary School in Cheltenham was one of the schools the Bandwagon visited last year, and teacher Jenny Spencer had this to say about the experience;

‘Today gave all sorts of children a chance to shine, I saw children that I’ve never seen moving or respond so positively to anything, stamping their feet and clapping their hands with the Bandwagon today.’

Throughout the history of science, we took living things apart to figure out how they work. Now, 21st century biology is all about putting them back together, but not necessarily as nature decreed. In the last two centuries the fusion of genetics, evolution and cell theory has lead us to the undeniable truth that the millions of species crammed onto the tangled tree of life evolved from a single common ancestor. There are myriad experiments yet to be done in evolutionary biology, but with wholesale replacement of the principles of natural selection extremely unlikely, science is in the post-Darwinian era.

Biology has drawn us to thrilling and powerful positions. In cinematic jargon, big outstanding issues are the prequel and sequel to evolution, both steadily inching toward rebuilding lifeforms from scratch. As Richard Feynman once wrote, ‘what I cannot create, I do not understand.’

Genetic modification has evolved into a new field - synthetic biology - with engineering at its heart. This infant discipline promises a global industrial revolution where the parts are DNA and the tools, cells. It’s as controversial as it is exciting, with new life forms being built for purpose, from spider-goats to diesel producing bacteria.

At the other end of evolution, the fundamental question is ‘how did life begin?’ Dr. Nick Lane, winner of the 2010 Royal Society book prize with ‘Life Ascending’, will be updating us on his current experiments: fizzing various chemicals through a humble

bioreactor, in order to question the geological development of the most fundamental basis of all living things.

Both synthetic biology and origin of life research have the most basic of human endeavours at their heart: the act of creation.

Fashion designer Vivienne Westwood is donating £1 million to fight climate change after voicing frustration that money pledged by governments three years ago has yet to be distributed. Dame Vivienne was moved to help the campaign after the environmentalist James Lovelock suggested that there would be only 1 billion people by the end of the century.

“That just shocked me so much. It just made me feel weak, when you think of all these children trying to crawl to water, and what’s going to happen to the human race,” she said.

The money has been donated to the charity Cool Earth, which aims to raise £7 million to protect large areas of rainforest from logging in Peru, the Congo Basin and Borneo. Dame Vivienne is working with the charity to expose the failure of the World Bank to distribute money from its two Climate Investment Funds, which were launched in 2008 to help developing countries to tackle climate change by 2012. As the spending period draws to a close, only a

quarter of the money has been deposited by governments, and only 5 per cent has been distributed.

Dame Vivienne called on the public to “donate a fiver” to charities such as Cool Earth rather than wait for governments to sign an international treaty. “I’m just a very practical person,” she said. “So I took as much as I could afford from my company. I’d never done it before because we’ve always been putting money back into it.”

deFORestAtIOn: A FAshIOn dIsAsteR?Dame Vivienne Westwood spoke to Hannah Devlin, Science Editor at The Times, about her personal crusade to help save the planet.

WheRe dOes LIFe COMe FROM?Science journalist Dr Adam Rutherford is a self-confessed ‘professional geek’. Editor of Nature magazine and regular contributor to the Guardian, as well as BBC television and radio programmes, Adam will be speaking at Cheltenham Science Festival about perhaps the most significant event in human history - the creation of synthetic life.





In my early years as a young, novice violinist, my horizons didn’t extend beyond the world of classical music. But around the age of 13 came my musical awakening. I discovered to my considerable delight that there was far more out there than violin sonatas and concertos. Among the many different and fascinating styles were Tango and Klezmer.

The Tango is a dance that most of us have heard of, with many enjoying its intimate, physical, excitement courtesy of the extremely popular “Strictly Come Dancing”. As those viewers will have discovered Tango music is every bit as exciting as the daring moves on the dance floor. Hailing from the area of Rio de la Plata, which is between Argentina and Uruguay,

Tango is passionate, fiery music that’s full of excellent tunes and a real driving rhythm.

Ástor Piazzolla was an Argentine tango composer who took his native traditional tango and combined it with elements from jazz and classical music, creating a brand new style termed ‘nuevo tango’. We’ll be treated to a performance of this in Cheltenham on 11th July by the Fugata Quintet, who specialise in Piazzolla’s new brand of tango – with violin, guitar, piano, accordion and double bass. This same concert will feature a completely different style of music altogether – but one that is just as exciting to experience live.

Klezmer was originally a musical tradition of Eastern European Jews, played at weddings

and other celebrations – and as a result the music is energetic, joyful and amazing to watch. The 8-piece band She’Koyokh will be performing their exhilarating Eastern European/ Balkan/ Gypsy tunes for us on the same night. It will be amazing to see two very different but equally inspirational bands in one concert. So whatever kind of music you enjoy this is definitely an evening not to be missed.

“My motto is: there are no problems, only challenges!” declared the 27-year-old musician from Montenegro, the small country on the Adriatic which once formed part of Yugoslavia. Coming from a homeland with no real classical guitar tradition and a population of only 600,000, the challenges faced by Miloš if he were to climb the international guitar-playing ladder were daunting. At least he comes from a family of music lovers, even though none of his relatives is a musician (both his parents are economists, and his younger brother is currently studying for a Masters degree in economics in Madrid).“Music was very much loved in my family, by my parents and my grandmother,” he recalled. “They really encouraged me to sing because the voice is something that comes most naturally.’’

The early Nineties were not the best of times for the Balkans, and although Montenegro didn’t suffer the kind of horrors that were visited on Bosnia or Kosovo, it did not escape unscathed. “War was happening all around,” says Miloš. “Montenegro was a part of Yugoslavia and politically it wanted to stay in Yugoslavia, so it was dragged into the conflict. It was the scariest time. I remember the father of some children I played with was killed in the war, so it affected everybody indirectly. I was lucky to have the most unbelievable parents. All the shops were empty and everything was so depressing, but with the little they had they tried to make my brother and myself feel like princes.”

Meanwhile, Miloš’s playing was developing at stunning speed. He had never been afraid to perform in public, and as his skills improved he was quick to display them in front of audiences. He had begun making appearances in major

concert halls by the time he was 14.Determined to get himself to London and the

Royal Academy of Music, Miloš applied himself single-mindedly to improving his technique and building up his repertoire, winning every available competition in Yugoslavia and taking additional lessons in Belgrade.

“I decided I would send my material to London. I chose five of my best pieces and recorded a tape of them, and sent it to the Royal Academy. After two months I hadn’t heard anything. My mother said ‘you’re only 16, you can try again next year’, but I refused to accept

it.” Plucking up his courage, he telephoned the Academy, and asked what had happened to his application. “The lady said ‘wait a minute’, and then she came back and said ‘it’s wonderful news! Didn’t you get our letter? You’ve been accepted, the head of studies Michael Lewin will teach you, and you will have a scholarship of such-and-such amount of money. See you in September, bye!’” So, just turned 17, Miloš found himself starting a new life in a strange city.

Since graduating from the Royal Academy of Music with First Class Honours, he’s become a much-sought artist, playing to sold out

audiences around the world, and his passion for the instrument is infectious. “There isn’t a more accessible or more beautiful instrument than the guitar,” he said. “The guitar repertoire is wonderful and there is a lot of it. It needs to be brought out of its niche and to have a renaissance. This is my mission!”
