Most of the top defenders in soccer are from Europe. It is a fact that defenders that are best in

Europe are best in the world because no one is better than them. Defenders from other leagues

are emerging but as of now there is no one who can compete with the European defenders. Here

is a list of top 5 defenders in Europe, without any particular ranking.

Nemanja Vidic

Vidic is the captain of the Manchester United and leads his national side Serbia as well. His

performance is a clear example as to why he deserves both these positions in each team. He has

played a lot for Manchester United and has played a key role in his team’s success. With him the

team has won Champions League, Premier League and several times team of the year award. He

has proved everybody wrong who thought that he wouldn’t perform as he did in the last season

by leading the side to an exorbitant run in this season especially the Champions league.

Gerard Pique

Barcelona’s defender is unarguably one of the best defenders in the game. At 24 he has many

awards to his name including the Don Balon award for the best breakthrough performance in

2009 and with his current level of performance he can still earn many awards for himself. His

national team, Spain is the World Cup champion and he played an important role alongside

Puyol to become the World Cup winner.

Philip Lahm

The German player plays for the Bayern Munich and was named as the captain of Germany in

the World Cup in the absence of Michael Ballack. He did justice to the confidence that the team

management had in him and led the team to the semifinals of the World Cup. His edge over other 

defenders is his tackling technique that is very rare. He has been constantly underrated though he

deserves to be applauded for his incredible performance.

Carles Puyol

This man needs no introduction. He has been a part of the Spain’s World Cup winning squad and

is the best defender in Barcelona. He has been with Barcelona since 1999 and has completed 350

matches with the same club. At 32 his performance is unmatchable though he plans to retire

sometime soon. He has left his mark on the team and is mentoring Pique which is the main

reason behind Pique’s incredible performance.

Lucio

The Brazilian captain is the one of the greatest defenders and plays for Inter Milan. He was a part

of the Inter Milan Champion League’s winning squad last year and proved his importance in the

team. The great defender has a record for playing most minutes without committing a foul i.e.

386 minutes.
