Last year, during a Holocaust Literature unit, my classes raised over

21,000 tabs to support the Tabs for Tolerance Project at Freeport Middle

School. This year I hope to raise even more due to the “friendly” competi-

tion between my classes and Mrs. Robinson’s classes. What is the Tabs for

Tolerance Project? Well, the Freeport Middle School TABS collection start-

ed in 2009 as a Holocaust project to teach their students about tolerance

and other cultures. The goal is to collect at least six million tabs. Once

they reach their goal, all tabs will be donated to the Ronald McDonald

House Charities Pop Tab Collections. So far, they have collected over two

million tabs. Please help Mrs. T or Mrs. Robinson’s classes compete for

TAB champion this year and help out a great Project and wonderful chari-

ty at the same time!! - Jamie Tibaquira

Honoring Heroes

By Anna Vaught

It was 8:46 on September 11, 2001, when the terrible tragedy began. That day at least

6000 people died, 400 being first responders who sacrificed their lives to save others.

People across the nation remember 9/11 as a day where they saw a spectacular act of

courage, even among the devastating tragedy.

Every year the citizens of the United States show honor and respect for the coura-

geous acts of both the national fire department and police. Breakfast Point Academy is

one of the many schools who pay respect for the losses of 9/11 terrorist attacks. On this

day we go out to the flag pole and pay our respects to all of our heroes who go out every

day and may or may not ever come home.

By honoring our local first responders for their efforts every day to keep us safe,

our students hopefully understand the privilege we Americans have to be able to stand

free and safe from attacks. Our local fire and police departments do not get paid enough

to put themselves in harm’s way. However, they never complain or ask for praise. At

Breakfast Point, we hope that they know by our tribute how much we appreciate them.

New Teachers at BPA

By Seth Ward and Cole McGuire

We have many new teachers. This year in middle school. In order to get o know our new

additions, we have decided to feature a few each month.

Mr. Wing teaches 7th grade and 8th grade pre-algebra and geometry. After at-

tending the University of Florida, he began teaching high schools; so, moving down to

middle school is new for him. He says that it’s a great feeling that this school is so posi-

tive. The only issue is that he never taught middle school so he doesn’t know what we

have previously been taught in the past. Mr. wing says he’s very excited to teach at BPA

even though he’s only been here for a little over a month. He loves the atmosphere

agrees that BPA is a great school for students and teachers!

Although Ms. Orrico taught here last year, she is new to both 8th grade and to US

History. In previous years Ms. Orrico taught mostly language arts, but she says the

work is almost exactly the same, especially with all the DBQS (data based questions).

She says it is especially nice since she got to move up with her 7th grade students to 8th

grade. Ms. Orrics she has quite the experience in teaching! Ms. Orrico plans on staying

at BPA for a very long time, “I love the kids, the administration and all the teachers.”

She also just loves how everyone works together to get things right for everyone. Ms. Or-

rico is quite the stingray!

Brown is the New Green

By McKayla Davison

California produces most of the country’s produce like apples, rice, oranges and ber-

ries. California is the world’s 9th largest agricultural economy. However for the past three

years CA has been grappling with its severe drought.

The state has had to put restrictions on urban water use, like lawn watering. As other

sources dry up people are shifting focus to groundwater. In Empleton, CA, groundwater lev-

els have dropped seventy feet in ten years. In normal years groundwater accounts for about

40% of water use but it has increased to 60%.

California also grows a lot of the world’s cotton. However with rising water prices because of

the drought, many family cotton growers are having to switch to almond trees.

Farmers have also abandoned corn, the corn acreage in CA has dropped 34% from last year.

Farmers are paying as much as ten times more for water than before. Some farmers are los-

ing their jobs because of the drought. Howitt of the University of California says, “California

needs to rebalance its agricultural portfolio in response to this drought.”

Solar Storm

By: Jimmy Kirwan

A strong solar flare erupted Wednesday the 10th at approximately 1:48 Eastern day-

light time. A Solar-storm or a solar flare is an intense burst of Radiation coming from

the release of magnetic energy associated with sunspots. It has been several years

since Earth has had a Solar-storm of this size coming from sunspots smack in the mid-

dle of the sun, says Tom Berger, director of the Space Weather Prediction Center in

Boulder, Colorado. The worst of the energetic particles streaming from the Sun will

likely go north or above the Earth. The Solar-storm is moving about 2.5 million miles

per hour, meaning it could arrive as early as Friday the 12th, but it could be later says

Berger. Solar-storms occur often, especially during peaks in the solar cycle.

Solar-storms don’t directly harm people, Keyword directly. Solar-storms can create

strong geomagnetic storms that may cause disruptions to the worlds electrical grids,

GPS, and radio systems throughout the weekend, September 12th to the 14th. Fortu-

nately, these Solar-storms aren’t expected to be catastrophic, and anyone living in the

northern top of the U.S or the lower part of Canada might be able to some colorful au-

roras.

Space experts have long warned us that if a massive solar storm ever hit us, it could

knock out power grids across North America, leaving millions of people without elec-

tricity for months maybe even years, this might cause a worldwide spread of chaos,

and maybe even send us back to the days without electricity.

Jamboree Game

By: Alex Downing and Ryan Pettys

Breakfast Point football took on Surfside Wednesday, Septem-

ber 10th. They suffered a quality loss, 36-0 in two quarters.

Cole McGuire had 40 receiving yards against a secondary that

played 20 yards deep. The captain Cole McGuire also played

defensively; he captured six tackles, and a forced fumble. The

sharks didn’t pass the ball. They ran the ball 100% of the

game. This means that all of Surfside 274 yards came on the

ground.

The Breakfast Point offense was a low time at the begin-

ning of the game. Going 3 and out the first 3 drives. According

to the Head Couch, Sean Robinson the offense produced the

highlight of the game. With “Cole McGuire’s deep amazingly

fantastic catch”. Quarterback, Zach Sinclair threw 64 yards

and threw 2 interceptions. He looked solid when he had time

in the pocket. Being a strong pocket passer, he had trouble

throwing on the run.

The Breakfast Point defense look super solid on the first

defensive drive. One of the general lowlights of the game ac-

cording to Couch Robinson “3 and 18”. On the first drive

Breakfast Point had Surfside at a 3rd down and 18 yards to a

first down. Surfside then called a strong (right) side run off the

edge. The SMS running back took it to the house and scored off

of the play and the sharks went up 8-0. The game went slow,

but the sharks won 36-0. It showed much improvement room

for the rays, and was a very positive experience.

Xbox One September Update

By Nick Erkal

The Microsoft Xbox One (released last November) got an up-

date this month! It features a redesigned party app. The im-

provements’ for it involve the ability to quickly kick people,

and see what they are playing.

The new update also adds in a redesigned friend’s section.

You can now see how much Gamerscore (Xbox’s point system)

they have earned, and how much in the last 30 days. The next

feature added in is a media player built in. The media player

can play files in many formats. But not MP4, and many other

formats. Support is said by Xbox Live’s Major Nelson to “Be

coming in the coming months”. There is also now a bandwidth

meter. So you can view how much internet is being used. Use-

ful if you’re like me and like to know everything for no appar-

ent reason.

The final main feature added is the ability to stream TV Via

SmartGlass® which is Microsoft’s tablet – Xbox protocol. This

allows you to stream TV, and HDMI input signals to your tab-

lets, and other Mobile devices. This feature is ONLY available

in select European countries for some time. The update also

adds in many new features, increasing the ease of access,

adding additional functionalities, and the console is released

in 29 new countries globally. This feature should leverage the

sales of Sony’s Play Station 4 which is beating the Xbox One

in sales 2:1, but the Systems have been in these countries

since launch.

Dear Stanley… Ever wonder what the difference is between boy advice and girl advice? Breakfast Point

Academy offers both in our “official” advice column.

Dear Stanley,

How do I get over something that has affected my life?

Try not to think about it. I have had to get over many things. Trust

me, find something fun to take your mind off things. Good Luck! - Boys

If you want to get over something that has affected your life, then

you need to follow these steps. First, you need to realize what truly

is effecting you. Next, you need to realize how majorly this effecting

your life. Then, you need to push through t and say “ This isn’t going

to bother me anymore!” ( Mentally). Last, is to get over it and forget

it ever happened

- Girls

If you need any advice or have comments, write it on a piece of paper and slide it into locker 1047. You may al-

ways remain anonymous and all of your questions are kept behind a lock.

(For entertainment purposes only.)

Best of Luck, Stanley
