Greetings unto this wonderful Barony,

Steppes Warlord has once again come and gone.

As you read this, we are still recuperating from a wonderful, exciting,

crazy, hot, event.

Aurelia and Astrid did a wonderful job, with limited manpower and

multiple unexpected changes. The number of events that happened

were one for the record books.

This was a magical Warlord for us serving as Baron and

Baroness. Courts were filled with laughter and tears. The crowds were

large and the fighting grand. We have said goodbye to our 2018

champions and welcomed new ones. We hope that we will be able to

show all our champions, throughout the year, how appreciative we are

to have them standing with us at events.

Now let’s repeat it next year!

The silk banner class held in May was amazing! Thank you Dona

Rex. The banners made turned out fantastic! Our barony has such

great talent!

Steppes will conclude another Newcomers Academy this month. It is

wonderful to have so new additions to our Barony.

Come be a part of the future fun!

Peter and Sarah

Words from our Seneschal

Greetings unto the Great Barony of the Steppes

As I type this article my mind is racing with all of the things I still need

to accomplish prior to attending Steppes Warlord this weekend. My

mundane life has been somewhat overwhelming of late and I look

forward to this great event to re-immerse myself in the current middle

ages. As you read this article, the event will be in the past and I know

that all of the work and preparation by so many of you will have helped

to rejuvenate me. I’m betting we had a great weekend filled with

accomplishment, fun and camaraderie. It just happens that way.

So, we’ve done the big event. Now what? Check your kingdom calendar

and you’ll find something every weekend in June ending the month with

Steppes Artisan, which, just as the name implies, is where our great

Barony’s next Champion Artisan will be selected. Enter the competition

or just come out to see some amazing works.

If you are new to the SCA or to The Steppes, we want you to be

comfortable and feel at home with us. Ask questions and we’ll answer

them or help you find the answers. We were all new at some point and

learned from those that were here before us. There are many, many

things to do in the SCA so just follow your heart and find the ones that

speak to you. And for all of us, both new and more experienced alike,

DON’T FORGET TO HAVE FUN!!

We are a Mighty Oakwood,

We are a Barony,

We are a Family,

WE ARE STEPPES!

Greetings to the populace of the Steppes, Glaslyn, and associated lands!

This month we had our third Heraldic Hangout (working name is Steppes

Community College of Heralds). Six people were in attendance. We had a

guest speaker, Mistress Emma de Fetherstan of Mooneschadowe, former Star

Principal Herald and former Wreath Sovereign at Arms, who met us via

webcam, and taught us all about heraldic commentary.

Regarding the Heraldic Hangout, it has been very well received and attended,

but unfortunately I am going to have to put it on hiatus for at least the next

three months, as I will be going to school at night for at least that long.

Hopefully we can resume in the fall.

By the time you read this, Warlord will have just passed. A reminder that a lot

of heraldic activity happens at events. There is list heraldry, camp heraldry,

consultation / submission heraldry, and court heraldry. Thanks to the classes

taught by HL Ivo and Mistress Emma, several members of our populace have

been given the skills needed to jump in there.

For all of those that helped to make Warlord a success, you have my

gratitude. Everyone who heralded the lists or camp or hall, your voices made

the event better for everyone. For those who assisted Master Tostig at the

consultation table, you also have my thanks.

I also want to put a bug in your ear. I’m well past the halfway point of my

tenure in this office, and I’ll need a replacement early next year. If you are

interested in what the office entails, please contact me.

Finally, I'd like to mention that if any are interested in learning about heraldry

and/or being a deputy, please let me know. No experience is necessary, just

an enthusiasm for things heraldic. If anyone has any questions about

registering your identity with the College of Heralds, protocols for heralding

court, heraldic display, or the like please contact me or one of my awesome

deputies.

Words from our Officers - Rapier Marshal

Unto the Barony of the Steppes doth Abd al-Mahdi Jamal ibn Hakim, Rapier Marshal

of the Steppes sends greeting,

Springtime continues to bless our fair barony, along with its somewhat capricious

weather. While the facilities of Heights Park is very accommodating, the same cannot

be said for those thunderstorms that far too often wash away our opportunities to

play. Thankfully we’re able to keep everyone informed when practice is being

cancelled. If you’re considering attending practice but not all that certain about

whether it’s being held, be sure to check the baronial Facebook pages as well as the

baronial email list. Decisions on practice will be posted no later than 5 p.m. on the

day of scheduled practice.

Two rapier practices were held over the last month, and attendance is holding steady,

with seven to ten participants at these sessions. Besides our regular participants, we’re

welcoming a few new fighters who are arriving with previous experience in similar

fighting arts. Their knowledge and enthusiasm is appreciated.

I’m appreciative of the efforts of Ld. Llewelyn Brydydd Mir, who as my deputy

continues to help improve himself and others at rapier practice, helping with armor

and weapons inspection as well as helping to train fighters. Bear in mind, however,

that I could still use even more help. If you are interested in learning the ins-and-outs

and responsibilities of helping others to practice rapier combat, please feel free to

contact me face-to-face or electronically at [email protected].

The spring tourney season is now in full swing. The White Scarf Ruby Anniversary

provided the chance for many in the Legion of Swashbucklers to recall the beginning

of rapier combat in the SCA. (Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the event, as I

presently hold the title of Namron’s rapier champion and Beltane was scheduled

opposite of Ruby Anniversary.) Congratulations to Ld. Llewelyn Brydydd Mir, who

now holds the title of the rapier champion of our canton of Glaslyn. If you should

have the time, feel free to ask him how he won...he’s sure to let you know. Here’s

hoping that you were able to attend the greatness that was our latest Queen’s

Champion Tournament. There were so many great examples of prowess and chivalry

demonstrated that day.

Hopefully, many of our fighters will be prepare for the rigors of the Steppes

Champion list, held on the Sunday of Steppes Warlord. My next report should be

filled with recollections of what took place that day.

Thanks again to all who continue to support rapier combat in the Barony.

Greetings from your friendly neighborhood knights marshal!

We are back in warmer weather, and headcounts are starting to come back up.

I’ve had some success getting members of the chivalry to come teach classes.

Many thanks to those that have stepped up and taught. We are entering

tournament season and we are spending a lot of time on one on ones. I am in

the process of trying to get a monthly armor workshop together over at makers

space. If you are interested in helping out, please let me know.

As I enter my second year in office, I am looking to the future, so I am trying

to identify some deputies. If you are interested let me know. You do not have

to be a fighter to be a marshal.

Greetings Steppes!

May was the month for archery! We had 11 archers at the 1st Sunday practice and 12

at the 3rd Sunday practice. Add to that the multiple shoots at Warlord and Steppes is

apparently the place to be for archery!

Reminders for archery practice: everyone should check-in at the range office when

you arrive so they can get a head count, and anyone that has not signed a waiver with

the facility during a previous practice must do so.

Practices are each 1st and 3rd Sunday at 601 Gross Rd, Mesquite, TX 75149 from

2p.m. until ~5p.m.

Loaner bows and arrows are available. A chair to sit in and water to drink are

recommended.

Greetings to all the gentle people of Steppes and Glaslyn.

What a busy month we had! We did preparations for Warlord at our

regular A&S meeting, we had an awesome Silk banner class taught by

Doña Rix and so many more activities this month! If you were not

able to come, hopefully you will join us next month.

I hope that everyone enjoyed the Artisans' enclave at Warlord, thanks

to Johanna for taking charge again this year.

For our next A&S meeting, I'm planning a weaving workshop. Bring

your looms, bring your questions and we can work on them together.

If there is interest, I can make a re run of my brocade class.

Also, this month is Steppes Artisan! Come and enjoy the best A&S our

barony has to offer, and meet the wonderful people behind all that

creativity. More details are on the kingdom calendar and on the

Facebook event.

Greetings Steppes!

We had quite a few checks written in April in preparation for

Warlord. As a result, the Steppes ended the month with $24,216.14 in

our account. I expect this to tick up for May, as Warlord is our biggest

event of the year and this year it was an extra busy event!

The Steppes is still looking for a new Quartermaster. The main duties

are to organize the loaning and returning of Steppes inventory

items. Let me know if you'd like to help out; our storage unit is in Carrollton right off the PGBT.

Unfortunately I have not heard a confirmation from Kingdom regarding our next Exchequer yet,

but look for that information soon!

My word, everyone has been so generous in sending in garb for the

loaner boxes. At this point I believe all we really need is men's t-

tunics. We do have a box of fabric that can be used, if someone is

willing to sew them. I have so much on my plate at this time, that I

don't believe I'll be able to sew for several months. We will eventually

have a sewing day at my home (later in the summer) so please be

watching for the announcement. In the meantime, thank you all!

The Steppes Bowyer and Fletchers Guild is the oldest archery guild within Ansteorra

that we know of surviving even the later established now defunct kingdom's

archery guild. The Guild exists to share knowledge between members and instruct

others how to accomplish all the projects, skills, and items required to round out

personal kits for our SCA archery community. We have recently included thrown

weapons and siege weapons to our instructional activities since the kingdom has

combined all airborne missile activities together.

Guild meetings are a bit sporadic at the moment but ideally we will meet on the

last Friday of the month at a guild members’ home. If you want to know when the

next meeting is, please contact either HL Ironwyrm or the archery marshal who will

then put you in contact with him. [email protected]

Greetings Steppes,

SLAB is still chugging along. There has been a lot of interest in mead-making lately.

There was a baronial brewing competition at Warlord that was hosted by SLAB. A

great many samples were entered for judging, but one reigned supreme in the

tasting. Percival Beaumont won the day with his Hibiscus Cinnamon Cordial!

Other entries in the cordial group were Chocolate Covered Cherry, Lemoncello,

Medicinal Herb, Orange Spice, and Pomegranate Ginger. Several meads made an

appearance in the form of Angry Mead, Berry Kiwi Rush, Caelin’s Mead, Digby’s

Great, Peach Cobbler, Peach Melomel, Persian Mead, Persian Spice, Sweet Mead,

Viking Blood, and Young’s Traditional Mead. In the miscellaneous category there

was a hypicrass, a Fuji Apple Cyser, and two red wines.

Currently no meetings are planned, but keep an eye out here each month for more

Curse of the Dragon Slayer

Is it just me, or do you, too, find it perhaps the sign of a questionable movie when you see it

first with a specific title, but when you go searching for it (say, on some website like IMDb)

to get more background information, you find it also has a number of other titles? As if it

wasn’t already enough that the title I saw it under was confusingly close to the title of

another movie which I had already reviewed for you. Not to mention the fact that the lead

actor in each of those two movies was the same guy. But I did do the background checking,

and found all of the alternate titles, and discovered that, despite the confusion it was

causing, I had not, in fact, already reviewed this movie, despite the confusingly close title

and lead actor. And so it was that I finally grabbed a big ol’ handful of M&Ms and a Dr

Pepper (down here in Lonestarrora we know that there is no period in “Dr Pepper”), sat

myself down in big ol’ La-Z-Bubba recliner, and hit “Play” on the remote control. And thus it is that this month, Da’ud Bob

reviews for you not 2011's Dawn of the Dragon Slayer starring Richard McWilliams (which I reviewed previously), but a

movie made in 2013 and starring Richard McWilliams and variously titled: SAGA - Curse of the Shadow; Rise of the Shadow

Warrior; SAGA: Curse of the Shadow; SAGA: The Shadow Cabal; Dragon Lore: Curse of the Shadow; and finally, the title

under which I found it, Curse of the Dragon Slayer.

Starring, as I noted above, Richard McWilliams as Keltus the Wanderer, Danielle Chuchran as the elvish bounty hunter

Nemyt Akaia, Paul D. Hunt as the orc chieftain Kullimon the Black, James C. Morris as Gyarmuck, Eve Mauro as Tarsa, Kyle

Paul as Mulgrut, James Gaisford as Kethku, Bailee MyKell Cowperthwaite as the Prophetess, Nichelle Aiden as Delorus the

Mermaid, Clare Niederpruem as Mulva the Mermaid, Christel Edwards as Gipple the Mermaid, and Adam Abram as Fangtor

Bloodmoon, the synopsis of the underlying plot was “A secret cabal, The Shadow, works to bring about the return of Goth

Azul - the Undead God - in the rich world of SAGA, populated by elves, orcs, dwarves and dragons.” It’s all a lot more

complicated than that, of course, as human Keltus, elf Nemyt, and orc Kullimon have to team up to fight against

overwhelming odds and each other to try to prevent the return of Goth Azul from the underworld.

Good points: Some of the pieces of armor. The dark rider’s horse. Keltus’ chain mail. The CGI god of the dead Goth Azul

(who looks like a giant Krampus, only with wings).

Bad points: Nemyt telegraphs her spins in the fight choreography. The orc language sounds a lot like Star Trek’s Klingon.

Much of the armor. The bunny fur wrapped sword hilt. A fair bit of the dialogue is sometimes overly simplistic and out of

character for the person speaking it (e.g., “I believe in you now”). There are a lot of clichés in the script (“So we meet again

for the last time,” which I think I heard before in Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs). The plot has too many different things included in

it that really don’t add anything to moving the story along. (The mermaids, for example. Why are they even in there?)

Zero breasts. Three gallons of blood. 51 dead bodies. Arbalest fu. Crossbow fu. Sword fu. Flanged mace fu. Axe fu.

Blunderbuss fu. Arrow fu. Pistol fu. Grenade fu. Chain fu. Billy club fu. Giant water snake fu. Kung fu. Whip fu. Poleaxe fu.

Screech fu. (No, really!) Dagger fu. Net fu. Fireball fu. Heads roll. Hand rolls. Elf rolls. Gratuitous beheading. Gratuitous

humming. Gratuitous head ripping. Gratuitous drumming. Gratuitous heart ripping. Gratuitous singing. Gratuitous

mermaids. Gratuitous hoist with his own petard. Gratuitous bleeding stone. Gratuitous slo-mo. An 83 on the Vomit Meter.

1½ stars. Da’ud Bob says, “It would have been nice if they could have decided on a single title before they released this film.

Check it out!”

12. What would you have done differently if you had been in charge of the event? Made sure cry heralds

were out and about so people outside would know when plans changed and/or things were finally planned.

13. How did you contribute to the atmosphere or authenticity of the event? Participated in drumming at the

Hafla.

14. Was royalty there? Which ones? Yes! Sultan Vladislav and Queen Margaret were both in attendance.

15. Who won the contests/tournaments? See the next page for a list of Warlord award recipients. In

addition, Duke Miguel won the Royal Blade tournament and HG Margarita took the prize for Royal

Huntsman.

16. What was served at feast, and what was *good* at feast? No official feast, but the hafla buffet was

superb! The spiced kumquats were hands-down the best thing on the table.

17. What did somebody who didn't go *really* miss? Family

Steppes Herald here with a brief rundown of local accolades and awards from this past weekend's Steppes

Warlord. Please note that this only includes recognition in the Baronial court. Many other wonderful things

happened in Royal court that are not listed here. This report is to the best of my recollection, so apologies to

anyone or any award I have missed.

Duke Jason Drysdale bested Duke Jean-Paul de Sens to become the 46th Steppes Warlord. Lady Valka

Flokadottir was named his Consort of Love and Beauty.

Don Alainn de la Rue defeated HL Jacques de St. Amour to become the Steppes Champion. Mistress Katerine

le Roux d'Anjou was named his Consort of Grace and Honor.

Solmundr mac an Ghabhann out-shot all comers to become the Steppes Archer.

With soothing words did Ceara inghean mhic an Ghabhann become the newest Steppes Bard.

Count Romanius Vesperianus is the new Knife, Axe, and Spear Champion.

Yllana MacEwen was amazing in her accuracy to be named Novice Archery Champion.

Hakon the Blacksmith was awarded his third Acorn... no really, actually he was made a Companion to the

Order of the Oak of the Steppes.

Duskin MacSneacha, Sidheag Sorcha, and Alys Roana FitzStevens were all given the Acorn of the Steppes for

service to the Barony.

Percival Beaumont won the SLAB brewing competition with a cordial delicacy of hibiscus and cinnamon.

Maria of the Steppes (plastic) and Aurora of Ansteorra (metal) for the Youth Rapier champions.

The youth armored combat champions were: Div 3 Jonathan of the steppes, Div 2 Dravin of Namron, and Div

1 James FitzGalen

With over 400 in attendance, I can say with confidence that everyone who attended was a winner of a

weekend with wonderful weather, cheerful conversations with good company, and witness to the Dream

alive and strong.
