The next day we arrived at the event which was held at Heaton Park, Manchester, along with 42 other counties who had all entered their best eight runners. My race was to be the second of the day and the start was manic as the gun fired! The 329 competitors set off on what was going to be a long and hard race. It had rained during the previous two days so the mud was horrendous, people were describing it as Glastonbury without the music, it was that bad! As we set off shoes were flying off, people were tripping up in amongst everyone else and mud was being flicked up into our eyes. The sprint to try and get to the front of the pack took a lot out of me but I managed to get into a good position (25th - 35th), which I held throughout the race. There were some seriously hard hills throughout the course where most people were pulling themselves up by their hands, and this made the race especially difficult. I finished in 32nd place out of 329 and was ahead of the next Essex runner by 66 places. Overall it was a very challenging day which required a lot of determination and energy but was a great experience. Hopefully I will carry on running for Essex and I intend to improve and progress in the future. ENGLISH SCHOOLS’ CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010

Following on from my success at Hylands Park, Chelmsford where I came third, I earned a place in the Essex Team to compete at national level. PLAYGROUND TO PODIUM SPORTS EVENT On Tuesday, 9th March Harry Bowen and Thomas Newlove travelled to Chelmsford to take part in the Playground to Podium sports event.

“On Tuesday Harry and I went to the Playground to Podium scheme. We took a mini-bus to Chelmsford with three students from another school. When we arrived we were assigned to our groups and quickly got stuck in to the activities which were incredible! They included wheelchair basketball and football, table tennis, (which involved many misses on our part!), volleyball, target practice and cricket. I found all of the activities fun, very invigorating but also tiring. The scheme gave us the opportunity to meet several people who have put disability aside in order to push themselves to the limit and participate in sporting events.”

Thomas Newlove, 8JO

“Recently Tom and I went to Chelmsford for a sports event. We were put into groups and sent off to take part in the volleyball session which I soon picked up. The second event was wheelchair basketball which I really enjoyed and found I was good at and I hope to practise this more in the future. I tried cricket but was rubbish at it and table tennis which I found very exciting. All in all it was a great day and I would certainly recommend it to others.

YOUNG PEOPLE FARE CONCESSIONARY SCHEME SURVEYS Colchester Borough has been chosen as the area for a six month trial, (which if successful will be rolled out across the rest of the county), to introduce a fare concession scheme for young people using bus services in Essex with the following features: • Offer users half price fares on all registered local bus journeys starting and finishing in Essex. • Will be offered on all single, return and day fares sold on the bus and for monthly/termly/annual

season tickets sold off the bus. • Availability of concession - 24 hours per day 7 days per week. • Offer open to all those between the age of 5 and 19 inclusive. • Will also act as a proof of age and library card. As part of the pilot, persons in the age group specified, resident within the administrative boundaries of Colchester Borough Council, are being asked to tell Essex County Council, (ECC), about how they will travel in order for ECC to gain statistical information. The survey will be repeated in May/June and again in September. In return ECC have five MP3 players to give away for each survey and for those who enter all three surveys, there is a grand prize of a 10 mega pixel digital camera. For more information please visit the website: www.essex.gov.uk/biteplussurvey/ Forms are available from Student Services.

ENRICHMENT MORNINGS The spring term Enrichment Mornings, which took place on the 10th and 16th March, were a huge success. The mornings are planned to cover specific areas of the PSHE, (personal, social and health and economic education), and the Citizenship curriculum. The mornings provide us with an opportunity to help the students prepare for life once they have left school. For the two mornings we had more than thirty guests in school helping us to deliver the specialised areas and the students were, as always, a credit to the school. Topics covered by students were: Fire Safety, Personal Safety, Crime & Punishment, Alcohol, Smoking, Drugs Education, Sex Education, Coping with Stress, Banking Skills, Business Enterprise Skills, Work Related Learning, Revision Skills, Why Vote, Road Safety, Bicycle Safety, Global Citizenship & Rights and Responsibilities. Many thanks to our guest experts from EYPDAS, Smoking Cessation, Nat West, School Nurses, the Police, ECC Road Safety, Local Councillors, Business Mentors, Fire Education Office, Advantage Africa, Enterprise Education Partnership, Chlamydia Screening Network and YES. The students, as you can see from the photographs, had a huge variety of activities put on for them and should be commended for their efforts in making the most of the opportunities provided for them by staff and guest speakers. These mornings are successful because students and staff understand the importance of preparation for life beyond school and if anyone is able to offer any skills or expertise in these areas their support is always welcome. Thank you to everyone who contributed to these mornings and made them a success.

Mrs P Deighton “I attended the enrichment morning to talk to Year 11s as to why they should vote. Their behaviour was exemplary and they made me feel very welcome. They were inquisitive and fun to talk to. I feel that they should all be congratulated and I look forward to coming again if invited.”
