For me, one of the great joys of this annual Event is the sense of a gathering of the coffee world for a family reunion of sorts, says Ric Rhinehart, the executive director of SCAA. Of course, no family reunion would be complete without lots of social activities and a chance for generations to touch base with each other.Cindy Cohn, senior director of events for SCAA, says, Were proud of the significance our annual show holds in the realm of specialty coffee, and in The Events growth over the past 26 years. I think those that have attended would agree that The Event remains the industry standard for networking and a must-see, must-experience extravaganza for everything coffee. Its educational, interactive, innovative and inspirational, and often the highlight of a coffee professionals year.

Activities, Innovations & EducationThe U.S. Coffee Championships Arena is among the hotspots for Event activities this week, and it features a fantastic range of competitions and coffee exploration. Look in on the U.S. Barista Championship, or wander over to the U.S. Cup Tasters Championship. See the U.S. Brewers Cup, or watch the particular magic of the very first U.S. Latte Art Championship. Join the Efforts of the Coffeelands Food Security Coalition

In 2012, a small working group of coffee industry leaders (Counter Culture Coffee, Farmer Brothers, Keurig Green Mountain, Starbucks and Sustainable Harvest Coffee Importers) engaged collectively to invest in a pilot project in Jinotega, Nicaragua. Their goal: Build year-round financial security for coffee farmers and address challenges brought by seasonal hunger. Later joined by S&D Coffee and Tea and SCAA, the Coffeelands Food Security Coalition (CFSC) is entering its third year.

Acknowledging that complex challenges in the coffee value chain related to smallholder farmer livelihoods are on the rise, the CFSC recognizes that a bigger effort to affect change is now needed.Building on their proven model of collective impact and re-focusing efforts to advance economic development in areas of critical importance to the future of coffee, the CFSC is moving into a new phase of growth. The coalition is now re-energized under the direction of Joanne Sonenshine, founder and CEO of Connective Impact, to create a lasting structure and a program built to shift the development trajectory among coffee communities.CFSC is asking others to join them in a concerted effort to create household resilience for millions who grow our coffee.Want to learn more about Coffeelands Food Security or connect with them here at The Event? Contact Joanne Sonenshine at [email protected] or connect with her via the attendee feature in the SCAA Event App.

Rekerdres & Sons Is the Coffee Industrys One-Stop Insurance ShopBy Aaron TuckerBeyond physical loss, the risks faced by coffee merchants are endless. For example, how would your policy respond if your coffee was placed in a container which had previously shipped bleach or sulfurand was subsequently rejected by the roaster due to the contamination and stench left by the previous goods? The only thing worse than the smell is the ensuing battle between your coffee insurer, rejection insurer and general liability insurer. Wouldnt having something in common between insurers be beneficial? Retaining the same insurer for all of your policies gives you peace of mind and would avoid the conflict of which underwriter is ultimately responsible.Since 1953 Rekerdres & Sons has been serving the insurance needs of coffee merchants. Over time, we have become experts in the trade routes of this continuously expanding business.Rekerdess knowledge allows us to coordinate the risks so we can combine the physical with political or credit risk; the liability with the marine. Our specialized markets enable us to offer coffee merchants, traders and roasters a special package of policies tailored to fit their needs. This could include one or all of the following policies: Commercial General Liability, Marine Cargo, Product Recall, Kidnap & Ransom, Business Travel Accident, and/or Property. The packaging of these risks helps to avoid scenarios where underwriters try to pass the buck, causing the rejection or denial of a claim. With the help of one of the largest marine insurers, Rekerdres & Sons is the solution for your coffee related insurance needs.Aaron Tucker is a senior account executive at Rekerdres & Sons Insurance Agency. HunterLab Introduces ColorFlex EZ CoffeeHunterLab is pleased to introduce a new color measurement spectrophotometer, the ColorFlex EZ Coffee, to the coffee world at this years SCAA Event. The ColorFlex EZ Coffee is designed specifically for use by coffee roasters, providing accurate color measurement of ground roast coffee, including freeze-dried granules and instant coffee powders.A compact unit, with a footprint smaller than a shoebox, the ColorFlex EZ Coffee is ruggedly built and designed to handle the rigors of a harsh production environment.Built into its firmware are essential coffee-specific color scales, the SCAA Number, the SCAA Roast Classification and the HCCI, or HunterLab Coffee Color Index. While the SCCA Number and Roast Classification data provides industry conforming documentation, the HCCI has been developed by HunterLab, the worlds most experienced color measurement company, to accurately and tightly measure ground roast coffee at the 640 nm wavelength. This has long been known to roasters as the point in the wavelength spectrum where the most change occurs to the roast coffee grounds. The HCCI number, with its tighter tolerances, can be utilized to provide greater lot-to-lot and batch-to-batch consistency within a manufacturing process.Additionally, the ColorFlex EZ Coffee is very simple to operate, providing a one-touch operation. Simply place your sample in the cup, place the cup on the instrument and press measure, getting the reading almost instantaneously.Be sure to stop by the HunterLab booth, No. 13144, to see the ColorFlex EZ Coffee in action. Take a sample to measure and see just how easy and accurate it is!
