Chairperson’s MessageFull speed ahead for the Boston Chapter

Fall is shaping up tobe a busy season forthe Boston Chapter. We kicked off the au-tumn with a greatmeeting in Septemberand an excellent

turnout for Bonnie Michelman’s presen-tation on how Massachusetts GeneralHospital dealt with the events sur-rounding the Marathon Bombings. Her dynamic talk kept the audience en-thralled, and attendees walked awaywith a new appreciation for the uniquechallenges faced by healthcare security, particularly in crisis situations.

It was great to see a number of youngprofessionals in attendance at the Sep-tember meeting as well – an indicationthat our membership’s efforts to in-crease our ranks are paying off. As a re-minder, a young professional is not onlydefined by age (someone under age 40),but also by the level of experience in thesecurity field (less than 5 years). Youngprofessionals enjoy a discounted meet-ing registration fee of $15 at all regularchapter meetings.

Like some of you, I happened to be for-tunate enough to attend and present atthe ASIS Annual Seminar in Chicagothis year. I was quite impressed by thelarge contingent of Boston Chaptermembers at the Seminar. Several of ourmembers gave presentations at the Sem-

inar, while others represented ASISCouncils and attended national levelmeetings. It was a great chance to catchup with fellow security professionalsfrom our Chapter and around theworld. The Windy City also proved tobe a great host city with a bevy of fasci-nating tourist attractions, friendly lo-cals, and excellent food. Overall, theBoston Chapter was well represented atthe meeting and it was impressive to seeour members’ participation at all levelsof the ASIS organization.

Last, but not least, we have several im-portant items and deadlines for themonth of October that impact our en-tire membership. The first item is thenominations for John P. Manning Me-morial Fund Awards. The ManningFund provides scholarships, mentorshipawards, and donations to worthy chari-ties. We also have instituted a new Se-curity Officer of the Year Award thisyear to recognize an officer who hasgone above and beyond the call of dutyin his/her work. The deadline for boththe Manning Fund applications and theSecurity Officer of the Year nomina-tions is October 15th. Information onboth of these great programs is outlinedin this newsletter and on our Chapterwebsite. The Manning Fund and theSecurity Officer of the Year awards willbe presented at our Annual AwardsNight on November 14, 2013, atMontvale Plaza in Stoneham.

It’s also time for our Chapter electionprocess to begin with nominations fornew Chapter officers. Nominations arenow being accepted for the positions ofChairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secre-tary and Treasurer. Please send yournominations to me at [email protected] and Mike Pepe [email protected] no laterthan October 20, 2013.

I hope to see you in October at theUMass Club in Boston for our lunch-eon meeting featuring speaker JeremyPollard speaking about CORI reformand the nuances of national back-ground checks.

Sincerely yours,

David Corbin, CPPChairperson, ASIS Boston

Massachusetts General Hospital Director of Police, Security & Outside Services Bonnie Michelman waspresented with a token of appreciation by ASIS Boston Chairperson David Corbin after her talk at the September Chapter meeting.

Learn, don’t burn, with tips from NationalFire Protection Association If a fire or other emergency happened at your workplace, would you know what todo? Plan ahead with these recommendations from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

1. Have an office escape plan. Use office layout maps (or create them) showing all doors and windows. Discuss your plan with your entire staff.

2. Know at least two ways out of every room if possible. Test all doors and windows to make sure they open easily. Check periodically to make sure they are not blocked.

3. Have a muster site a safe distance from your building.

4. Practice your fire drill at least twice a year.

5. Practice using different ways out of your facility.

6. Close doors behind you as you leave.

7. In case of smoke alarm sounding, never go back in the office for phones, laptops, or purses until the all clear is given by the local Fire Department.

8. If escaping through smoke, get low and go under smoke as much as possible.

9. Call the Fire Department when outside. Do not assume they have been contacted.

When fire happens,PASS the fire extin-guisherDo you know when to use a fire extin-guisher and the proper way to do it?

According to the National Fire Protec-tion Association (NFPA), portable fireextinguishers can save lives and prop-erty by putting out small fires or con-taining them until the fire departmentarrives. But portable fire extinguishershave limitations. The following guide-lines can help you decide whether touse attempt to fight a fire with a fire extinguisher.

Use a fire extinguisher if:

• The fire is confined to a small area

• The fire is not growing

• The room is NOT filled with smoke

• The fire department has already beencalled

Once you have determined that it is agood idea to use a fire extinguisher, remember the acronym PASS:

• P - Pull the pin. This will release the safety locking mechanism. Always remember to make surethe nozzle is pointed away from yourself and any other people.

• A - Aim low. Point the nozzle at the base of the fire.

• S - Squeeze the lever

• S - Sweep the nozzle from side to side.

If you are in danger from a fire, don’tattempt to use a fire extinguisher. If youare not a firefighter, your number onejob during a fire is to get out safely.

ASIS Book ReviewInside the Mirage:America’s FragilePartnership withSaudi Arabia

By Thomas W. LippmanReviewed by Rich Zupan

In this book, author Thomas W. Lipp-man details the fragile partnership be-tween the U.S. and Saudi Arabia startingwith the oil explorations of the 1930s.

Much of the modern state we see onTV today was built by the state-ownedSaudi oil company, Aramco, and, to alesser extent, Bechtel, their constructionagent. Whenever something new wasneeded by Aramco to keep oil flowing, the Saudi government would say, “youdo it,” and for the most part, they did.The money was flowing, too.

For example, Aramco was responsiblefor a 3,000-acre farm venture super-vised by five U.S. citizens and 800Saudis. They ran it from 1950 - 1958when it was taken over by Muhammedbin Laden, father of Osama bin Laden.

As may be expected, Aramco and later, the U.S. Air Force, had difficulty em-ploying American Jews in Saudi Arabia.Liberal members of Congress, alongwith Jewish lobbying groups, foughtthis barrier, and eventually won by thelate 1950s.

Nonetheless, cultural divides were andstill are huge. A glaring example of thisoccurred during the first Gulf War in1990 when female American soldiersstationed in Saudi Arabia were seenwith their heads uncovered and drivingmotorized vehicles. While these behav-iors are everyday happenings by U.S.standards, many Saudis were shocked.

After Sept 11, 2001, the U.S.-Saudi re-lationship took a huge beating. The factthat 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudiand took orders from Osama bin Ladenenraged most Americans and shreddedthe protective cocoon that Americanbusiness and government diplomacyhad built around Saudi Arabia fordecades. All aspects of Saudi society, in-cluding its extremism regarding womenand Jews, a repressive political system,anti-intellectualism in its schools, andpolitical corruption, were on display. After years of looking the other way,Americans subjected Saudi Arabia tointense scrutiny and they did not likewhat they saw. Trade between the na-tions diminished at this time as manycontracts shifted from U.S. to Euro-pean businesses.

In total, Lippman does a good job oftracing the history of the delicate rela-tionship between the two nations andexpresses some hope for rebuilding thegoodwill that formerly existed betweenthem with “careful management byboth countries.”
