Capt. Brian M. Castelli, ’01Young Alumnus Award

On the Prep Lacrosse field, you could always spot Brian Castelli by his skinny legs. Years later, those legs would carry him through a distinguished career as an Army ranger and officer.

Brian graduated from NJIT in 2006 with a degree in mechanical engineering, and immediately enlisted in the United States Army. He completed Officer Candidate School with a commission as a second lieutenant. First in his class in the Army Engineer Officer Course, he earned a place

in the prestigious Army Ranger School at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Brian would spend fifteen months as a platoon leader in the 630th Engineer Company at Fort Drum, New York, before continuing his training in the elite Sapper Leader Course, a program for combat engineer leadership. Upon his return, he was promoted to executive officer of the 630th Engineer Company, with which he deployed to southern Afghanistan in the summer of 2009.

During a year in the Kandahar and Helmand provinces, Brian helped to command a unit of 200 soldiers, tasked with performing route clearance, by finding and eliminating improvised explosive devices along main supply routes. He has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, NATO Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon and the Combat Action Badge. He also earned the Ranger Tab and the Sapper Tab.

Having completed his active duty, he remains a Captain in the New Jersey National Guard, while working as a mechanical engineer with a national engineering consulting firm. Last year, he was the first guest in the Alumni Achiever Speaker Series for Prep’s Ignatian Scholars Program, speaking to Prep’s young leaders about his military service.

James B. McLaughlin, ’54Ernie Baker, ’38 Community Service Award

Concurrent with his “day job” as owner and manager of McLaughlin Funeral Home for nearly five decades, Jim McLaughlin has assembled an impressive record of service to the Jersey City community.

In 1994, he became the first-ever lay trustee at Saint Joseph’s Home (now the Cusack Care Center). He has also served as a trustee of Saint Peter’s Prep, chair of the Saint Peter’s College Board of Regents, a commissioner, vice-chair and chair of the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency, commissioner of the Jersey City Parking Authority, trustee and president of the Boys & Girls Club, chair of Jersey City Medical Center and trustee of Liberty Health Care. For good measure, Jim also served on the city council, representing Ward B from 1993-1997.

As a graduate of one proud Jersey City institution at Grand & Warren, it is fitting that Jim has gone on to shape so many other Jersey City institutions over the years that he has become a Jersey City institution in his own right. He has honored the Jesuit tradition of servant leadership, using his talents to serve the community in virtually every capacity imaginable. Jim also served his country for six years in the Army Reserve, as a sergeant in the 324th Ordnance Group.

A 1958 graduate of Notre Dame University, and the recipient of an honorary degree from Saint Peter’s College in 2003, Jim now lives in Spring Lake with Mary Ellen, his wife of 51 years. They have four daughters (including fellow former Prep trustee, Maryellen), five grandsons and six granddaughters.

Msgr. Lawrence J. MillerFriend of Prep Award

Saint Peter’s Prep is blessed with many friends – among its alumni, students, parents, faculty and staff, but also, crucially, among its neighbors. Community leaders throughout Hudson County, and indeed throughout New Jersey, are instrumental in helping Prep fulfill its mission as New Jersey’s Jesuit High School. And among this circle of friends, there is perhaps none truer than Fr. Larry Miller. As pastor of Saint Mary, Star of the Sea Parish in Bayonne for the past 22 years, he has overseen one of Prep’s strongest feeder

schools – first at Saint Mary’s, and now as a member of the advisory board at All Saints Catholic Academy. He is also a familiar face on campus, joining Prep’s Jesuits on the altar each year at the Mass of the Holy Spirit and other school Masses.

A native of the Bronx, Fr. Miller began his relationship with Jesuit education at Fordham, graduating in 1955. He also holds degrees from Catholic University and Seton Hall University. He was ordained in 1969, as a graduate of Immaculate Conception Seminary. His ministry has been marked by a dedication to his community that reflects the Jesuit ideal of cura personalis, care for the whole person. Away from the altar, you will find him organizing CYO and youth sports and activities, maintaining direct involvement in eighth grade religion classes and confirmation programs, and helping to create a Cluster Soup Kitchen in cooperation with Saint Andrew’s and Assumption Parishes. He has also served as chaplain for the Knights of Columbus for nineteen years, and was recently named chaplain of the Hudson County Serra Club.

Fr. Miller was elevated to the rank of Monsignor by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009, in recognition of his four decades of tireless commitment to the Church and to his community. In gratitude for his many gifts to Prep and the larger Prep family, we are proud to add our own honor tonight.

Elizabeth R. WalshBr. Paul Harrison, S.J. Spirit of Prep Award

It’s fitting that the Spirit of Prep Award should be named after Br. Paul Harrison, S.J., who in a thousand quiet ways worked to make Grand & Warren a better place each day, echoing Ignatius’ pledge, “...to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and to ask not for reward...” And it’s fitting that we honor Liz Walsh with this award tonight. In 26 years at Prep, she has embodied the spirit of Br. Paul – and the spirit of Prep – at every turn.

Liz grew up in Hoboken and Jersey City, graduating from Ferris High School and Saint Peter’s College. She spent ten years as a physician’s assistant before joining the Prep staff in 1985. Since then, she has proven a loyal, versatile and instrumental part of the school community. Her administrative skills and vibrant personality have graced virtually every corner on campus. The president’s, principal’s, dean’s, athletics and public information offices have all benefited from Liz’s presence, as the office of institutional advancement does today. Her many roles, interfacing with students, alumni and parents alike, have made her familiar to generations of members of the Prep family – a family that is richer for her many contributions.

For the past 20 years, Liz has devoted much of her spare time to horse racing. The horses she co-owns can be found running – and often winning – on tracks throughout both the east and west coasts. Back on campus, she supplements her office work with her additional role as co-moderator of both the junior and senior proms, helping to ensure Prep’s upperclassmen and their guests enjoy a memorable evening each spring.

Liz lives in Holmdel with Pete, her husband of 34 years. They are the parents of Lana Tartaglia, and welcomed Dean, their first grandson, this past March.

Nathan Lane, ’74Professional Achievement Award

The 1974 Petrean tells us that the Prep Fathers’ Club bestowed its Award for Dramatics upon one Joseph A. Lane, who had starred as the delightfully delusional Teddy “Roosevelt” Brewster in that year’s production of Arsenic and Old Lace.

Thirty-seven years, two Tonys, two Emmys, a slew of other accolades, and one name change (to satisfy Equity rules) later, it appears the predecessor organization to today’s PPA chose rather wisely. The Jersey City native who showed such

promise on the Prep stage has made good, from Broadway to Hollywood, from Samuel Beckett to Mel Brooks.

His résumé portrays an actor of remarkable versatility. He has appeared on Broadway in seventeen productions since 1982, and while his work in musical comedies accounts for both of his Tony awards (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, 1996; The Producers, 2001) and another nomination (Guys and Dolls, 1992), he has never shied from dramatic roles, appearing in recent years in such plays as Butley and Waiting for Godot. He has also appeared in more than 35 feature films, both in person and as a voice actor, and again in a dizzying range of roles, from Timon in The Lion King to Albert Goldman in The Birdcage.

In a career spanning multiple decades, styles and media, Nathan Lane has earned his share of recognition: Two Tonys, two Emmys, five Drama Desk awards, four Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Obie awards, the People’s Choice Award, the Lucille Lortel Award, the St. Clair Bayfield Award, the Olivier Award, the Screen Actors Guild Award, the American Comedy Award, the National Board of Review Ensemble Acting Award, numerous nominations including two for Golden Globes, a place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and another in the American Theater Hall of Fame. To that, add one more: the Saint Peter’s Prep Professional Achievement Award.

Thomas A. Schember, ’55, P’79Professional Achievement Award

A classmate summed up Tom Schember’s record eloquently: “His career was blessed and he has given back even more.” From humble beginnings, growing up at Saint Joseph’s Home in Jersey City, he has risen to several positions of leadership, but always remained a true “Man for Others” in the Jesuit tradition.

After graduating from Prep, Tom earned a B.S. in accounting from Saint Peter’s College and an M.B.A. in finance from Seton Hall. In the ensuing years, he worked for several companies, serving two of them as chief financial officer. He was named president of Saint Francis Hospital in 1980, and president of the Franciscan Health System in 1985.

In these roles, his commitment to serving others was a major asset. Tom made it his business to know each of Franciscan Health’s 1200 employees. He could be found walking the hospital halls to pay personal visits to patients, and would often go to extraordinary lengths to see a patient’s special needs met. Today, he remains active in the healthcare field, as chief operating officer at Comprehensive Habilitation Services.

Tom has served on the boards of numerous organizations – Holy Name Hospital, the Jersey City Economic Development Corporation, the New Jersey Hospital Association, and the National Catholic Health Association, to name a few. He currently sits on the boards of the Monmouth County Mental Health Association, Collier Youth Services, Monmouth Cares and the Stella Maris Retreat Center.

Commissioned as an officer in the US Army, Tom served for 23 active years in the Army Reserves, and retired as a colonel. He and wife Barbara are the parents of Susan and 2008 Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Tom, ’79.

Kevin A. Cummings, ’72, P’05,’10Professional Achievement Award

A commitment to excellence marked the early years of Kevin Cummings, who played both varsity baseball and basketball throughout his four years at Prep, en route to graduation as a member of the National Honor Society. He would go on to earn the Harry M. Fife Award for Excellence in Economics and Athletics at Middlebury College, where his academic performance was matched by a basketball career in which he finished as the school’s all-time leading scorer.

The same commitment is reflected in his work as president and CEO of Investors Bank. Under his stewardship, the company is experiencing significant growth while remaining financially strong and well capitalized, earning accolades both for the bank and for its top executive. Kevin was recently presented with the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2011 New Jersey Award for his success in transforming the bank into a growth company.

Before being appointed to his current position in 2008, Kevin served as executive vice president and chief operating officer at Investors Bank. He builds upon 26 years’ experience with the auditing firm of KPMG, where he gained firsthand knowledge of New Jersey community banking through his work with clients such as Summit Bank, Valley National Bank, Provident Bank and Hudson City Bank.

A Jersey City native and a resident of Summit, Kevin sits on the boards of several educational, community and business organizations, including that of Saint Peter’s Prep. He and wife Patricia are the parents of two daughters, Katie and Mary, and two sons – both following in their father’s footsteps as Prep alumni – Kevin, ’05 and William, ’10.
