An Introduction Over 700,000 people are nestled between San Francisco and San Jose in San Mateo County. The Peninsula is known for big things starting in small places. In fact, my mom’s childhood Menlo Park garage was later the birthing place of Google.

It’s central to the identity of this community—creating a tomorrow that can’t be fathomed today.

But it’s estimated that only 4-10% of these cultural creatives, CEOs, innovators, young families, aspiring students, and industry leaders belong to a local church.

I believe there are a great number of people in San Mateo county that agree there is a God—and perhaps even believe in Jesus—but are not able to live it out because they don’t have the means to grow, to question, to be guided, to ‘flesh out their faith’. If we could give them a vehicle, a church body in which to grow, we would be affecting some of the most compassionate, intelligent innovators of our time.

Since I moved from San Mateo County seven years ago, God has been drawing me back to the Peninsula to gather people to be the Church that Jesus intended.

We will be known as something unique, beautiful, organic, and lovely. One day we will tell a story about how a group of people banned together with the common desire to restore beauty, hope, and love.

And we will be known as The Sacred Church.

Josh and Evie Herndon, Founding Pastors

The Why: Our Cause At the core of our church lives our cause—why we exist, what we pursue, and how we identify ourselves.

The Sacred Church exists to be everything that Jesus intended the Church to be.

The How: Our Code From our cause flows our code—the way in which we operate, prioritize, and create.

• Disciple through personal mentorship • Aggressively fight injustice with service, money, and prayer • Be a part of someone else’s miracle • Everyone deserves to be loved • Constantly rethinking and realigning what we do back to why we do it • Political nonpartisan-ship

The What: Our Creation Through the cause and code of our culture follows our creation—what we do to live out our identity.

We will cultivate a Community of Missional, Worshiping Theologians.

Community • Sacred Kids. (Newborn through 5th grade) Whereas Jesus wanted children to

come to him (Matthew 19:13-14) and dually warned of neglecting children’s spiritual well being, (Matthew 18:5-7); fittingly, Sacred Kids will have a dual purpose. First, it will produce a weekly program during the Sunday service for children. This program will be excellent in every way, assuring parents of a secure and beneficial environment for their children. Secondly, it will partner with and be a resource for parents to raise God-honoring children.

• Sacred Youth. (Junior High & Senior High) Young people are instructed to be “worthy servants of Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 4:6). Sacred Youth will exist to train students in their adolescent years to live for and continually seek after God in a personal relationship. This program will excel in training student leaders.

Missions • Local Missions. Jesus insisted (Acts 1:8) that his church would be a witness in

Jerusalem (local city), Judea (greater community), and Samaria (an unpopular area for the Jewish community). Likewise, The Sacred Church will partner with local non-profits and ministries with paralleled purposes to extend justice, love, compassion, and Jesus’ message to our local community.

• Global Missions. It was the desire of Jesus to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). Therefore, The Sacred Church will be aggressive partners in finances, prayer, and involvement in compassion ministries, missionaries, and missions trips.

Worship • Worship Arts. Jesus was excellent at communicating complicated truths in

ways that common people would understand (Matthew 13:34-35). Likewise, Worship Arts will use various arts to relay things profound. We will create opportunities for new and innovative methods of worship though music, art, media, and other means for the purpose of experiencing and understanding God.

Teaching • Teaching Team. Jesus did not teach to glorify himself; rather he did so in

obedience to God the Father (John 12:44-50). Likewise, the Teaching team will be responsible for the weekly Biblical teaching in upholding doctrine, vision, and discipleship. These teachings will be excellent in delivery and rich in content. The teaching team will need to be consumed with God’s word and His present workings in the Kingdom of God.

The Technical: Components

Location We will be meeting in the heart of San Mateo County, the city of Burlingame at Burlingame High School.

Strategic Stewardship Plan and Financial Budget Jesus cared about money. In fact, he spoke more about money than heaven and hell combined because he knew “wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be” (Matthew 6:21). Whereas The Sacred Church does not believe in existing to be self-sufficient, we desire to put our treasure where our heart is: to be everything that Jesus intended the Church to be. The leadership of The Sacred Church will evaluate the budget in its first years every month to ensure fiscal responsibility and proper stewardship.

Startup Plan In order to meet our January 2012 launch date, the leadership of The Sacred Church needs to purchase, gather, and prepare promotional materials, equipment, and other various supplies. Our financial “plan before our plant” is as follows:

• We are expecting to raise $2,000 per month in outside support through 2013 • We are expecting to have donated $15,000 in one-time outside gifts • We are expecting to be given $30,000 in matching funds through the

Assemblies of God’s Church Multiplication Network.

Partnership: How Can I Help? Like any entrepreneurial endeavor, launching The Sacred Church will take a lot of people working very hard, unified by a common goal if we intend to achieve it. If you believe in The Sacred Church and want to partner in our efforts there are several different ways you can help us:

For Churches or Businesses Churches or businesses can partner with The Sacred Church in the following ways:

1. Monthly Support. A church can pledge to sponsor us for 12 to 24 months for $50, $100, or $150 per month while we gather people and instruct biblical stewardship.

2. One-Time Gift. A church can give a one-time gift of $500, $1,000, $5,000, or $10,000 (The Assemblies of God Church Multiplication Fund will match these one-time gifts).

3. Committed Team Members. Sometimes the biggest blessing a church can give is their people. Maybe there is a family who is willing to commit to be a part of The Sacred Church, either for a specific period of time or indefinitely? With the inconsistencies of church planting, consistent individuals can bring stability and leadership.

4. Projects. Individual families or the church can donate specific items that can help us launch. Please see our “Wish List” page for some of the items we have listed.

The Vision: The Next 10 Years It’s not our goal to be comfortable; instead, we strive to create a tomorrow that cannot be rationalized today. We obviously cannot fully comprehend the future needs of our community beyond our January 2012 launch; however, we can anticipate what can be expected from The Sacred Church in the coming years:

1. Several more campuses in San Mateo County

2. 1/3 of church income given to church planting, missions, and compassion projects

3. Non-profit marketplaces (family theaters, teen theaters, coffee shops) that will serve as community outreaches, satellite campuses, and offices for The Sacred Church

4. A discipleship and coaching network to train believers and future leaders

5. An established and productive partnership with local and global non-profits
