1 Heriot = a fine due to the lord of a manor on the death of anyone who held land of the

manor, and consisted of the best beast, jewel, or chattel of the deceased. 2 Carew =carucate or ploughland, a variable measure of land, but according to most entries

and to Book of Howth, p. 27-8, it was 120 Irish acres. In County Louth the ploughland is stated in his deposition (1642) by Gerard Colley to have been 240 acres, which must be an error. See Journal 1912, p. 78, and 1915, p. 395.

Athboye,3 called Dawscn's Court, an orchard adjoining to the said house, three
