• The Renaissance spread far beyond Italy, and as it spread it changed.

• During the Renaissance, advances in science and education were made.
Advances in Science
• Mathematicians created the math symbols used today– Square root – Positive numbers– Negative numbers
• Architects learned to strengthen buildings• Galileo Galilei studied astronomy and learned
that the earth moves around the sun

• History became an important subject, encouraged by Petrarch

Paper and Printing
• Papermaking spread from China to Europe in the 1300s
• Johann Gutenberg developed a printing press with moveable type
• He printed the Bible in Latin in 1456• More people learned to read

• People traveled to Italy to study• New universities opened in France, Germany,
and the Netherlands• Spread humanist ideas• Women were educated at home

realistic, with a broader range of subjects

• England– William Shakespeare wrote more than 30
comedies, tragedies, and histories
