What do “the Church” and “the State” mean?

“The Church” = the Catholic Church & its officials (specifically the Pope)

“The State” = kings, rulers, & government

Cooperation between Church & State

Happened when they had similar goals or interests

Example: Charlemagne & Pope Leo IIIGoals: Leo III wanted to restore glory to Europe after fall of Rome & Charlemagne wanted to expand kingdom

Result: Leo III crowned Charlemagne “Holy Roman Emperor” & gave him a reason to conquer more land in the name of spreading Christianity

Conflict between Church & State

Happened because each wanted more power over the other

Example: King Henry IV & Pope Gregory VIIReason: Pope made a statement that only he could appoint clergymen. Henry IV disagreed & tried to choose a new Pope to replace Gregory.

Result: Concordat of Worms in 1122 ended conflict & said kings could give clergy legal powers, but only the Pope could give them religious powers.
