Who We AreThe original choir was formed in 1872 and named the Brisbane Musical Union. Later the name was changed to the Queensland State and Municipal Choir and still later simplified to The Queensland Choir. It is believed to be the oldest continuously operating musical organisation in Australia.

The choir is comprised of members of the community who volunteer their services to participate in the Choir’s annual performance programme. Members come from a diverse range of backgrounds and ages and they perform at various times as a symphonic choir, the core of the biennial Brisbane Sings Messiah Chorus and as a chamber choir.

Over the years the choir has contributed greatly to the Brisbane musical scene not only through its presentation of quality concert performances but also by the performance opportunities it has provided to Australian soloists, both professional and developing, and to Brisbane’s orchestras and bands, both professional and community; the opportunities provided for school choirs and members of the public to join with it in the performance of major works and in choral workshops; and the commissioning and performance of new music by Australian composers.

Our Musical DirectorKevin Power is one of the most experienced Chorus Masters in Australia and has been involved with the Queensland Choir for over 40 years, 35 of those as Chorus Master. He has prepared the Choir for all of its concerts including those with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in that time and has conducted many concerts with the Choir himself. He was awarded the OAM in 1995 for his services to choral music. Kevin is also well-known as a professional solo pianist, accompanist, chamber musician, teacher, adjudicator and examiner.

Longevity of Choirs and Choral MusicTQC will continue to engage with younger singers who represent the membership of the future to help nurture their development, and support current singers to ensure the quality of their work so that the Choir’s performance is sustained at a high level.

Pathway for YouthWhile many students sing in choirs while at school, there are very limited opportunities for them to sing once they leave school. TQC can play a key role in providing opportunities for young people to continue their choral careers, to develop their singing and musical skills and to contribute to the community by so doing.

Skills DevelopmentBy offering opportunities for TQC singers to improve their vocal techniques, choral and musical skills through rehearsals and choral workshops run by specialist guest vocal teachers, choral trainers and conductors the Choir will maintain its high quality of choral performance. Attendance at some of these is also open to the general public which will continue to provide the membership of TQC and other choirs into the future.

Membership GrowthOur aim is to increase the number of singing members to 120 which would provide the vocal forces required to sing most of the larger works in the choral repertory. This would also enable the Choir to extend the range of repertoire available to its members by re-establishing smaller choral groups to perform more specialised areas of choral music.

Community EngagementTQC’s biennial Brisbane Sings Messiah is currently the most outstandingly successful opportunity for singers from the SEQ community to join in a performance of a major choral work and we will continue to present this. Specialist workshops will afford other opportunities for community singers to benefit from TQC’s activities while community orchestras and bands will continue to regularly provide the accompaniment for many of TQC’s concerts.

Engagement with other ChoirsSome major choral works require numbers of singers which no one choir is able to provide. TQC will continue to join with other community choirs to present such works when the opportunity arises. A Choral Festival managed by the choir and presented on a regular basis is seen as an important future need to ensure choral music retains its rightful place in the local community arts scene.

Why Support Us?With TQC’s strong heritage - being the oldest continuously operating musical organisation in Australia - it is important to ensure the Choir’s long term viability to enable it to continue to lead the development of choral music in Brisbane. With the costs of administration and concert production rising annually TQC needs financial backing to continue to bring joy both to its choir members and its audiences, now and into the future.

Where does our funding come from?Currently our funding streams come from 4 sources:

• Membership fees

• Concert ticket sales

• Brisbane City Council Grants (enables TQC to market its events)

• Fundraising by choir members

While TQC has been able to operate successfully on these income streams, even without any operational funding from either the State or Federal Governments, the future of TQC is under threat if it is unable to secure income from other sources for a sustainable future, given the continued rising costs.

As a volunteer / membership based organisation, all events are managed by a dedicated group of singers under the guidance of a professional and highly experienced Musical Director. Volunteers are the backbone of any community based organisation, and with TQC’s clear mission to not only secure longevity but also grow the organization, extra funding is crucial.

The only two people who receive r e m u n e r a t i o n are the Musical Director and the Accompanist.

ExpenditureAs a membership based organisation with limited funds, the significant expenditure items for the choir are:

• Musical Director/Accompanist

• Choir Office

• Rehearsal Venues

• Concert Venues

• Musicians i.e. Orchestras and soloists
