THE PRONOUN "EN" (le pronom •en")

The French pronoun object "en" replaces:

a) a partitive article (du, de la, de I', des, de)+ a noun. In this case, the meaning of"en" is some I any, (or, more literally, of it, of-them, some of it, some of them).

e.g. 1. Je bois du Iait. > J'm bois. I am drinking some milk. > I am drinking some ( some of it).

2. II achete des pommes. > II m achete. He is buying some a._rmles. > He is buying some ( some of them).

3. As-tu de l'ament? > bas-tu? Do you have any mongy? > Do you have {J!JJc.? ( any of it)

4. Ils n'ont pas de stylos. > IIs n' m ont pas. They do not have any pens. > They do not have {J!JJc...( any of them).

b) a noun that is preceded by: i) a numeral (un I une, deux, trois, etc.)

e.g. 1. Elle achete deux blouses. > Elle m achete deux. She buys two blouses. > She buys two (of them).

2. II veut cinq dollars. > II m veut cinq. He wants five dollars. > He wants.five (.ofthem).

ii) an expression of quantity (trop de, combien de, un kilo de, etc.)

e.g. 1. Nous mangeons trop de piµa. > We eat too much pizza. >

2. Combien de sucre prends-tu? > How much su~ar do you take? >

Nous m mangeons trop. We eat too much (of it).

Combien m prends-tu? How much (.of it) do y_ou take?
