Minister’s Letter

2 ThePoverello, July 2014

My sisters and brothers,

May God’s peace and joy be with you!

At our fraternity gathering in June, we held our Chapter of Affairs and welcomed Jacqueline Hale, Thamir “Tom” Jabiru, Awham Zoma, Gloria Diehl, Doris Allen, Dan McBride, and Victoria Valdez to our fraternity. A heartfelt welcome to all of you! Please invite your family and friends to attend our fraternity picnic on Sunday, July 20 from 12 Noon-4:00 p.m. at Shelter 8 on Belle Isle.

Reflection

Secular Franciscans, together with all people of good will, are called to build a more fraternal and evangelical world so that the Kingdom of God may be brought about more effectively. Mindful that anyone “who follows Christ, the perfect man, becomes more of a man himself,” let them exercise their responsibilities competently in the Christian spirit of service.

– OFS Rule, 14

“From the time of his conversion, Francis’ life was one of service. He saw in the Gospel message the desire of Jesus to care for human beings. Francis took up this call. He spent time caring for the needs of the lepers who were ever present in Assisi. This work remained very important to him and he made sure that it was part of the formation of the younger friars who were to come after him. As he preached, Francis’ service took a new twist. He began caring for people’s spirits as well as for their bodies.

“As the townspeople heard and saw Francis, they were also drawn to his way of living the Gospel. When they asked for a Rule they were given the same mission of service that Francis entrusted to the other two Orders he had founded. Throughout the history of the Secular Franciscan Order, wherever a fraternity sprang up, charitable works were not far behind. This was especially true in the case of hospitals, and schools for the children of the poor.

“Secular Franciscans should be in the forefront of promoting the Gospel message of service. It is a very rich part of their heritage. As they serve others, they are giving witness to the Body of Christ present and active in our world today. Their witness is a testimony to the fact that the message of the Gospel can still be lived out in our modern society. All it takes is a forgetting of self and the realization that we are all called to serve one another just as the Lord served those whom He called friend.”

– from Gospel Living by Teresa V. Baker, OFS, p. 76

Let us all remember this: one cannot proclaim the Gospel of Jesus without the tangible witness of one’s life. Those who listen to us and observe us must be able to see in our actions what they hear from our lips, and so give glory to God! I am thinking now of some advice that St. Francis of Assisi gave his brothers: preach the Gospel and, if necessary, use words. Preaching with your life, with your witness.

Questions to Ponder

How do you serve the needs of those around you? What drives you to serve these needs? Who could use a bit of kindness and love today? Who might benefit from a phone call, a visit or an offer of assistance? What have you done to share the Gospel today? For about seven years now, I have served as a wake service minister at my parish. For awhile now, I have been searching for a way to be of greater service to the people I have met who are struggling with the death of a loved one. Last December my search ended when I signed up for Stephen Ministry classes at my parish. Every Tuesday evening for the past six months, I have been attending those sessions. They have prepared me to journey with individuals grieving the loss of a loved one or dealing with another life challenge. On July 12-13, I and my classmates will be commissioned as Stephen Ministers. I ask that you please keep us in prayer as we begin our ministry. Please pray for vocations to the Secular Franciscan Order. I am looking forward to seeing you at our fraternity picnic.

YAMILA8 years old

Yamila has been fighting cancer since she was 3 years old. She underwent treatment at a local hospital in Puerto Rico, but the cancer, unfortunately, came back. Then her doctors

recommended a bone marrow transplant and referred Yamila’s family to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee where Yamila underwent a bone marrow transplant, with her brother serving as her donor. “My daughter began riding her bike shortly after leaving the transplant unit,” marvels her mom. “The physical therapist would come to teach her some exercises, and all she would think about was her bike.” Yamila even took English as a Second Language lessons at the fully-accredited St. Jude school. Yamila has returned to her home in Puerto Rico. She comes back to St. Jude regularly for checkups. She loves to play guitar, make arts and crafts and cook. “St. Jude is a hospital where miracles happen,” says Yamila’s mother. “Here, children are happy while they’re getting treatment.”

All members of the St. Bonaventure Secular Franciscan Fraternity, their families and friends are cordially invited to attend our fraternity picnic. Invitations have also been extended to our Capuchin brothers of St. Bonaventure Monastery, to the young ladies of the St. Clare Society and their families, and to six local fraternities. In order to ensure that we have enough hot dogs and buns, please RSVP no later than Wednesday, July 9th, by calling 313-579-2100, ext. 136 and leave a message with your name, the food or beverages you plan to bring, the number of your guests, and if you are able to assist with the set up before and/or the clean up after the picnic.

We need volunteers to assist with the set up at 11:00 a.m. Terry Westbrook-Lienert is planning to arrive at the shelter at 9:00 a.m. on July 20. Hot dogs and buns will be provided. If you plan to bring a dish that contains mayonnaise or cream in it, please remember to pack it in ice. Even though there are plenty of picnic tables under the shelter, you may want to bring your own lawn chair. We have arranged for a deejay to provide us with music to listen and dance to.

Our Call to On-going Conversion Here are five strategies to help you experience holistic conversion.

GET COMFORTABLE BEING UNCOMFORTABLE

Transformation requires stepping out of your comfort zone. At the beginning of all transformations you need to be willing to embrace feeling uncomfortable. No real conversion happens inside your comfort zone.Remember Francis with the leper! Think of it as an adventure.

THINK OF YOURSELF AS A WHOLE

The human person is comprised of body, mind, psyche and spirit (soul). We need to care for each of our “parts”. The body needs sufficient exercise and healthy eating. The mind needs stimulation and stretching. The psyche needs an optimistic and positive attitude, an expectation of enjoying the journey. The soul needs intimacy with God – through prayer, meditation and other sources of spiritual inspiration.

FIGURE OUT YOUR DEEPER “WHY?”

What is it that you most want to accomplish in life? What do you think your purpose in life is? Identifying what we want out of life is the greatest source of self-motivation and offers us the most staying power.

BE THE HERO IN YOUR OWN MOVIE

Although God and grace are there to help us, only you have the power to change you. “I can’t change” is self-defeating, so stop playing the victim. Realizing that you have the power to write your story is critical to achieving true and lasting conversion. You are empowered to choose what you will do and how you will (re)- act.

PAY IT FORWARD

Those who have experienced conversion and transformation appreciate what they have been given and how their lives have changed for the better. They want to help others change their lives and experience the power of transformation, and by doing this, they help themselves. It’s contagious!
