the Players Club, situated just one mile from Junction 18 of the m4 on the outskirts of Bristol bordering Wiltshire and gloucestershire, is dedicated to the game of golf. With two 18-hole courses, the Codrington and the stranahan, a 9-hole Par-3 Water garden course and first class practice facilities, the Players Club has become home to over 150 golf professionals.

We have staged nine sky televised Europro events and four West Region PgA championships as well as regional finals for many top amateur and professional events.

Ranked 113 in the golf World ‘top Courses in the great Britain and Ireland’ in 2006, all three courses have been designed and built to the highest specifications that will push even the finest golfers in the world to their limits. One of the striking features of the layout is its maturity with woodland, lakes, trees and gorse coming into play. Put this on your ‘must play’ list because, as one notable golf writer said, “well, this is about as good as it gets”.

At the Players Club we welcome visitors and we offer a range of memberships catering for all bands of golfer, from a full 7-day membership to a membership giving freedom to play other courses whilst retaining a handicap and being part of a club.

Within the Players Club portfolio we have five luxury cottages available for groups of up to 24 guests wishing to ‘stay and Play’ in the area. We are also a first-rate location for weddings, wakes, conferences, functions and corporate hospitality.

the history of the Players Club dates back to 1992, when Les Philpot commissioned me to design an 18-holer on what was then called Lyres Farm. then the centrepiece was what we know as the lake at the 3rd, but that was a jet ski lake and the golf course land did not include that. We got planning for the golf course but it was a very different routing to today’s course. the farm to the right of today’s 7th was the clubhouse and the 18th hole would have been from today’s 10th tee back up the practice ground; the 17th hole was the 10th in reverse.

some years passed and the Kendleshire, only five miles down the road, was developed and was a huge success. I was a director of the company that owned the Kendleshire and in 1997 Les approached us about buying the 185 acres of land.

It was an opportunity not to be missed and mike Whiting and dave Bousfield negotiated the jet ski lake into the course as we felt that both could not operate. It meant an entirely new routing and a new clubhouse positioning, we had wanted to overlook the lake but the planners were against it, they suggested a two storey building tucked in behind the trees at the top of the car park, five planners and two appeals later we finally got our building. graham griffin was instrumental in building our courses together with Colin Cole, both of whom I have worked with for over 20 years.

It took a long time to complete and the flat land was shaped with load after load of fill material to create the humps and hollows, we rootzoned the fairways and became the first Bristol course to install fairway irrigation, our lake became our reservoir and the course redrains back into it. Perfect recycling!

may 1st 2002 saw the opening of our new course, billed as the longest course in the country at 7,607 yards. Paul Barrington ran the operations and worked out of a temporary building until the pro shop was ready, with no alcohol licence we gave a beer away with every round and sold sandwiches and snacks alongside clothing and clubs and we did that for nearly two years until our clubhouse was up and running.

Along the way we have staged nine Europro events all sky televised and a further five stage 1 qualifying events, six Jamega events and four West Region Championships. Our reputation as a tough course with great greens and practice facilities have drawn 150 Professional golfers as members notably gordon Brand Jnr, george Ryall, david dixon and John morgan but Andrew sherbourne, michel Bothma, Liam Bond, Adam Frayne, Jeff Hall and david Park can all be spotted from time to time.

With the addition of the Water garden course in 2004 we had the opportunity to rent a further 50 acres for 50 years on the land adjoining the entrance and in 2009 we started work on the stranahan course, a short but sporty 18-holer. With its testing greens and accuracy the key to good scoring the new course is perfect for those of us that think we hit it 300 yards but in reality only hit it 200.

Would we rule out a fourth course in the future? Of course not.

the courses were designed by Adrian stiff who also designed the highly-rated neighbouring Kendleshire and Cumberwell Park. the flagship Codrington course is designed to test you, thrill you and frustrate in equal measure, with the stranahan course requiring positional play and is ideal for a casual round or for societies. As today’s golfer magazine put it: “If you’re looking for a top match play venue, The Players Club Golf Course will definitely do the trick. With so much trouble around, usually in the form of sand and lakes, the wheels can fall off at any time. The Players Club is one of the best UK golf courses to emerge in the last few years. It may have opened as recently as May 2002, but it is maturing fast and its reputation is spreading far beyond the West Country.”

Codrington Course(Par 72, 6,625 yards from the white tees)

the Codrington Course was opened in 2002 and since then has developed the reputation of being one of the toughest courses in the south-West. From the back tees the course stretches to over 7,200 yards, however from the medal tees measures a slightly less intimidating 6,625 yards.

With a par of 72 and a standard scratch score of 73 the Codrington offers a true test for any level of golfer. the course has been framed amongst woodland areas combining an eclectic blend of modern and links-style design with numerous bunkers and lakes coming into play on almost every hole which only further adds to the exciting character of the course.

10

About Our Courses

Page 11: THE PLAYERS GOLF CLUB ANNUAL CORPORATE BROCHURE 2013 – 2014

the greens have been built to UsgA standard with many testing contours and undulations. In 2006 the course was ranked 113 by golf World in its ‘Best Courses in great Britain and Ireland’. A new course record of 63 was set during the 2009 Euro Pro motocaddy masters by matthew Ford with the course playing 7,045 yards.

Stranahan Course(Par 68, 5,505 yards from the white tees)

the stranahan Course opened in may 2010 and presents a very different prospect to the golfer than its elder brother the Codrington. At only 5,505 yards the stranahan is much more golfer-friendly, but will still offer a challenge to the experienced player with shot placement and good putting important factors in making a good score. the greens are built to UsgA standards and are full of both subtle and severe breaks. the course is minimal in bunkering and only boasts a few lakes save that of the 1st, however creative contouring and undulations are testing obstacles in their own right. the stranahan is rare as it is in a small group of golf courses that start and end with a par 3. With three par 5s and seven short holes we should see a welcome return to the three-hour round. modest players may break 80 and great players may threaten 60.

Water Garden Course(Par 27, 9-hole par-3 course)

Reminiscent of the par-three course at Augusta national, the Water garden is perfect for those looking to learn the game in a quiet and peaceful environment and for dedicated players seeking to improve their short game skills.

Championship CourseFor championship events, the Codrington Course can be played from the back tees, providing the ultimate test of golf, playing to a mammoth 7,716 yards in length and to a par of 72.

Hole 1 (Fat Jack) 473 yards, par 4A tough championship opening hole where a tee shot slightly to the left is favoured and ensures the best route to the green. the fairway is just 30 yards wide with a bunker on the right side which for some is the line. the approach is likely to be played from some 150 yards from a high plateau to the green flanked by a solitary bunker, the lake and the plantation know as ‘Fat Jack’. Probably a drive and a medium iron from the regular tees, the tee shot is some 70 yards shorter avoiding most of the trouble. take advantage of the downhill slopes and you can reduce this hole to a mere pitch. Beware of the green, it’s more than 40 yards long and twists towards the lake with enough ridges to keep even the most devilish greenkeeper happy for weeks!

Hole 2 (Fools Gold) 172 yards, par 3the first of the short holes which can be deceptive. the green has an awkward ridge that runs strongly across from the left side, an accurate tee shot is essential to set up a birdie opportunity though both sides will gather the ball onto the green. All of the trouble is behind, so the safer shot is to play for the front but putting can be difficult if the pin is back.

Hole 3 (Island) 394 yards, par 4A hole destined to grace the covers of the golf magazines; our signature hole is likely to put the fear into most golfers, especially aquaphobic ones! the tee shot is played over the right-hand side of the lake to a sleeper-edged peninsular fairway. mounds to the right will help gather the ball, but the long drawn drive will reward an easier second shot across the lake to a narrow elevated, sleepered green. the fun does not stop there, as the green is multi-levelled, making two putts a difficult task.

13

Page 14: THE PLAYERS GOLF CLUB ANNUAL CORPORATE BROCHURE 2013 – 2014

Hole 4 (The Grove) 191 yards, par 3the second par 3 at the Players Club is a downhill pretty hole with the green bordered by woods on the right and a large lake to the left. three pot bunkers cross the front of the green. From a full drive off the pro’s tees at 240 yards, the hole scales down to just 150 yards from the tee of the day. there is little room for error; a shot either left or right of the green will find woods or a hollow. set amongst the ancient woodland of the grove and a lake, the green has a picturesque setting and offers a chance to catch up on the wildlife.

Hole 5 (Punchbowl) 580 yards, par 5A right-to-left dogleg this par five offers a real chance of a birdie. the tee shot needs to find the fairway as bunkers to the left side of the fairway can catch you out. Only the long hitters will have any chance of reaching this hidden green with two blows. the second shot offers a choice, it can be played into position as a true three-shotter or you can risk further distance to view the punchbowl green. the approach must carry a walled bunker which is blind from the fairway. the green, set amongst the moundings, gathers the ball in true links style. the area to the right of the fairway is a nature zone of rushes, ponds and natural grassland. It provides a breeding habitat for the great Crested newt.

Hole 6 (Tormarton Twist) 437 yards, par 4this tough dogleg left is rated the toughest par 4, often back into the prevailing wind, and one that requires a precision drive threaded between two bunkers. A perfect tee shot is the draw because the right-hand side of the

14

Codrington Course Hole-by-Hole guide

Page 15: THE PLAYERS GOLF CLUB ANNUAL CORPORATE BROCHURE 2013 – 2014

fairway feeds the ball away, making the second shot longer. the green is well guarded by bunkers and has some tough pin placements. It is bisected by a central ridge that will throw the loose shot towards the grass hollows.

Hole 7 (Southbound) 368 yards, par 4A birdie opportunity comes about at this short par 4. Beware, it’s still a tough green. you can lay up to your favourite yardage by hitting an iron off the tee, or if you are feeling brave then a driver gets you close to this small sloping green.

Hole 8 (Codrington Straight) 434 yards, par 4this par 4 benefits the long drive although beware the bunker on the right. the green is set in a bowl so don’t despair if you’re a long way out as you can run a long iron or wood in. If you have a short iron in hand try and land the ball all the way as anything short can run through to the back.

Hole 9 (Eden) 496 yards, par 5An accurate tee shot must avoid the steep slopes and bunkers to the right, but there is more trouble on the left with a bunker, gorse bushes and out crops. If the tee shot is laid up the long second must carry the gully in order to reach this massive green, which is more than a quarter of an acre in size and guarded by a central pot bunker. From parts of the green you will not be able to see the hole and it is so difficult that even three putts may be acceptable.

Hole 10 (Grants Oak) 205 yards, par 3A par 3 starts the back nine with the tees staggered around a long lake that must be carried to reach the raised green. yet with a large slope in the front section of the green and a bunkers front left and right, a par here will not be the easiest of tasks. this picturesque hole has woodland to the right and the rear.

Hole 11 (Lydes Turn) 497 yards, par 5A strong right-hand dogleg where the brave may try and cut off some of the corner but beware of bunkers at 270 yards from the tee. the rolling links-like fairway turns at 240 yards and a demanding second shot must find the raised green, which, without bunkers, is encircled by a series of pits and mounds. A well-directed approach should offer a birdie chance.

Hole 12 (Dodington Ridge) 545 yards, par 5the second of the three par 5s on the back nine, the 12th hole is played downhill where only the very brave will try to attack this narrow target in two. the tee shot must miss the twin bunkers on the right. From here you must decide your strategy. safety would be advised laying up to leave a 100-yard pitch for your third. the gamblers will chance threading a long wooden shot to this small target. shots that miss the green will undoubtedly find the large bunkers that adorn the left and right-hand sides of the green.

Hole 13 (Graham’s Wall) 195 yards, par 3this picturesque par 3 is played back across the lake to one of the flatter greens on the course. the walled green sits on the side of the lake leaving no room for error. A slightly elevated tee position exposes the expanse of water that must be avoided and an island clad in dogwood. A marginal bail-out area to the right may help the faded tee shot but there is no help for the overly-drawn shot.

Hole 14 (Ashdown) 489 yards, par 4From the tee only the top of the flag is visible yet a tee shot that carries the ridge will ensure a perfect view of the green and the awaiting hazards. Water on the left must be avoided and together with the walled pit short left of the green, this tough par 4 will yield few birdies. the hole positions can be made difficult by using the green’s contours that feed the ball left into a swale. From there, you must be strong enough with your first putt to reach the level ground or the ball will return to your feet.

Hole 15 (Hopkins Chance) 621 yards, par 5One of the most exciting tee shots on the course must avoid the water on the left to secure a position to attack this green in two. A safer line to the right steers clear of much of the trouble but leaves a longer second over the lake into the bail-out zone. From here, a 100-yard pitch remains across a hollow and pot bunkers to the green, which has a gully running diagonally across the middle section. grassy hollows to both sides and a bunker to the rear will collect anything but the perfect approach.

19

Page 20: THE PLAYERS GOLF CLUB ANNUAL CORPORATE BROCHURE 2013 – 2014
Page 21: THE PLAYERS GOLF CLUB ANNUAL CORPORATE BROCHURE 2013 – 2014

Hole 16 (Little Jack) 185 yards, par 3the last of the par 3s is played back across the water from elevated tees to a green nestled up against the wood. three bunkers guard this tricky rollercoaster green that swings towards the lake. Heather borders around the edge of the lake add to this already very picturesque hole. multiple pin positions allow this to be either an easy or difficult hole.

Hole 17 (Deer Run) 370 yards, par 4this short dramatic par 4 hole offers a birdie chance. Accuracy from the tee is the key; the long hitters may chance their arm at reaching this green from the tee. Using a lofted wood from the tee is the safer option to avoid the large bunker that lies just before the green. the approach shot needs to be precise as the green is divided into two halves both of which are very narrow. Putting from one half to another is not easy; slopes and swales abound around this wide but narrow target that abuts the ancient woodland where the deer reside.

Hole 18 (Lean Tom) 454 yards, par 4this final hole is another tough par 4. Played alongside the wood, the hole feeds up towards the clubhouse. the easier tee shot appears to be left but you must avoid the fairway bunker, while those hitting their tee shot to the right of centre will find the undulating fairway offers flatter stances. the green is deceptively contoured to feed the ball into the hollows to the right. go beyond the pin and the returning putt will be fast.

21

Codrington Course Hole-by-Hole guide

Page 22: THE PLAYERS GOLF CLUB ANNUAL CORPORATE BROCHURE 2013 – 2014

Hole 1 (Frank’s First) 104 yards, par 3A short but spectacular start with a tee shot played onto an island. It’s a big enough target although the green is contoured making putting difficult from the wrong side. A large grassed bunker arcs around the right side protecting the green from the water.

Hole 2 (Hole O’Cross) 272 yards, par 4A downhill drive played over a valley to a shared fairway, you need to be careful with your tee shot. Position is important in order to gain the best angle to pitch to this sculptured green set amongst the gorse.

Hole 3 (Shepherds) 404 yards, par 4A tough par 4 hole played uphill, the tee is set close to the woods and a copse at 300 yards makes the tee shot quite tight. the best line into the green will be from the left with the slopes and swales guarding the right side approach. A true bogey five hole. the green will also throw balls to the left the more the approach is from the right-hand side.

Hole 4 (Long Jack) 486 yards, par 5slightly downhill, this hole is a great birdie chance although as with most of the greens on the stranahan the approach is best from a specific position. the woods to the right will catch many second shots and the tee shot must miss the wetland conservation area down the left side. A great thinker’s hole and the risk takers may come unstuck.

22

stranahan Course Hole-by-Hole guide

Page 23: THE PLAYERS GOLF CLUB ANNUAL CORPORATE BROCHURE 2013 – 2014

Hole 5 (Cup) 359 yards, par 4the tee shot is best aimed between the twin Ash trees to a sloping but gathering fairway. the approach to the green is set beneath the fairway but guarded by a tough bunker on the right side to the green which is modelled on the 1st hole at Carnoustie, hence the name ‘Cup’. the green gathers best from the left, but falls to the back also.

Hole 6 (Southgate) 142 yards, par 3A short hole with a sideways Biarritz-style green about 45 yards wide. With the left and right sides being higher many balls will be drawn to the centre of the green. A deep grassed bunker protects the right side of the green and the tougher pin placements.

Hole 7 (Molly’s Pit) 410 yards, par 4Perhaps the hardest hole on the course relative to par where a good drive needs to be placed between the trees avoiding the swale. the approach needs to be accurate to avoid molly’s pit on the left, a hard ridge rides the green swinging the ball away and the bunkerless green is deceptive for putting. An approach slightly right of the pin is often best.

Hole 8 (Parkers Corner) 216 yards, par 3short holes are essentially straight although many here will favour routing their tee shots right to take advantage of the slope that gathers the ball towards the green. the trouble here is all left with the trees and conservation area and the big central pit that dominates the tee shot all to be avoided.

23

Page 24: THE PLAYERS GOLF CLUB ANNUAL CORPORATE BROCHURE 2013 – 2014
Page 25: THE PLAYERS GOLF CLUB ANNUAL CORPORATE BROCHURE 2013 – 2014

Hole 9 (Whiting’s Oak) 334 yards, par 4A short par 4 but one where you need to be accurate as the main trouble is left from the tee. However, the green is best approached from this side as its sole bunker is front right.

Hole 10 (Black Poplar) 344 yards, par 4this hole will play much tougher than its length with the tee shot getting tighter at around 200 yards. For many it may be less than a driver as position is key in approaching this green, bunkers left and right make it more difficult with the back portion of the green swinging the ball away.

Hole 11 (Frying Pan) 206 yards, par 3Played slightly up the hill it will require quite a mid to long iron to make the distance from the back tees, from the normal tees the hole is a pitch that gathers at the left and backsides. A sleepered trap must be avoided!

Hole 12 (Adey’s Choice) 463 yards, par 5A hole with options to tackle. the green can be reached with your second shot through a gap in the mound or just play to the right and try your luck at a pitch and putt. the green is defended by a central bump which interferes with low scoring like the ‘sea Headrig’ green at Prestwick.

Hole 13 (Marshall’s) 528 yards, par 5the longest hole on the course and a definite three-shotter for most players. the tee shot has some options to cut the corner but the second shot must be cute enough not to be stymied by the oak. Out of bounds runs all down the right and the green is protected by strong contours that slew the ball away.

Hole 14 (Barringtons) 334 yards, par 4Played downhill towards the wood, the green is set to the right of the wetland conservation area. Big hitters may be troubled on the left but the right side gathers most shots towards the sloping putting surface.

Hole 15 (Lumber Yard) 130 yards, par 3A hole literally in the woods in the old cutting which was once the pheasant shoot, the green is large so no excuse for missing it.

Hole 16 (Painswick) 183 yards, par 3Another hole played in the trees, it was made by taking out the Italian Poplars which to many conservationists are merely weeds. A small pond is on the right side of the hole and the green has a number of distinct pinning areas.

Hole 17 (Sand Court) 398 yards, par 4the 17th also doubles up as the 2nd on the Championship course. the drive is all about position and beware the hazard of the right-hand side of the brow of the hill. the green has a steep run-off to the right, so avoid the swale.

Hole 18 (Flitcroft) 156 yards, par 3the tees double up as the tees for the 3rd on the Championship course. It requires an accurate tee shot to a walled up green protected by a wall hazard to the left and trees to the right. A steep bank borders the green at the rear while three putts are not uncommon on the multi-tiered putting surface.

the Water garden course consists of nine par 3s and is likened by many to the nine-hole course at Augusta national.the course has many holes having the greens guarded by water, although great fun, holes 5, 6, 7 and 8 are no place for the beginner. the course record is 22 but a score of 27 is very good and a round without losing a ball in the water is equally rewarding.

the course is rarely busy and often used by top players to sharpen up their approach play. the greens are built to UsgA standards, are well contoured and are particularly small, perfectly for fine-tuning the accuracy of your wedge game.

the cost of playing the Water garden course is included in your summer green fee. the course is open from April to november. All categories of membership at the Players Club can play and enjoy this fun layout as part of their package.

the Players Club Pro shop is the place to go to take care of all your golfing needs. director of golf mark Brookes and his team are on hand to give you the advice and information you require to make sound buying decisions. We are stockists of all leading manufacturers of drivers, fairway woods, utility woods, irons, wedges and putters. And because we are a member of the United Kingdom’s biggest golf buying group, Foremost, it means a piece of equipment can usually be sourced fairly quickly and at a competitive price if it is not currently in stock.

Why not get your club or set of clubs made to fit your individual swing by taking advantage of our popular custom fitting service?

many recreational golfers play with clubs which are ill-suited to their swing, but with a few simple measurements you could have your own purpose-built equipment. this service costs less than you think and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking.

the professional team are committed to allowing you to get the most from your game and you can look the part too thanks to our wide selection of clothing.

mark has his own website, www.mark-brookes.co.uk and you can keep in touch with him and goings-on at the club via Facebook and twitter (@markbrookes118). Alternatively, pop into the Pro shop for a chat or call 01454 313029 (option 1).

If you have the commitment and desire to lower your handicap then our talented team of teaching professionals will be delighted to help you achieve your goals, whatever they may be. Coupled with our fine practice facilities, we feel we can offer an all-round game improvement package.mark Brookes and his team consisting of Ian Watts, Kirsty taylor, tom Lightfoot and Eleanor Pilgrim can help you improve any area of your game, eliminating weaknesses and turning them into strengths.

sometimes the technique is fine, but not the thought process behind the selection of shot, and that is where an on-course playing lesson can be a huge benefit. One of our professionals gives a unique insight into how to make the most of your ability, to choose the right shot at the right time and subsequently to lower your scores.

Excellent instruction is nothing without the facilities to put those newly-learnt skills into action, working on them until they become second nature.

Here, again, the Players Club scores highly for the conscientious golfer looking to maximise their potential and lower their handicap to become the best they can possibly be. We have a magnificent practice range, excellent short game area and a wonderful par-3 course, the Water garden, to work on your game.

If you play more than 20 rounds per year you might need to upgrade to the SILVER membership. the green fee is always £10 on the Codrington and stranahan, but you can play all day during the week and on weekends after 3.30pm for free on the stranahan course. the younger stranahan course is an easier layout but has its own charms with contoured greens, it suits the shorter hitters and the course should offer a three-hour round.

GOLD membership is the choice of many with unlimited golf on the stranahan course and plenty of free play on the Codrington. Free golf is available through the whole winter period (november-march), every weekday morning up to 10am, every day after 3.30pm and for all weekend club competitions and knockouts. golf outside those times is £10.

the PLATINUM package is our ultimate option, allowing unlimited golf and including a 60 per cent discount off buggies. you can introduce guests at greatly reduced rates and bring three guests for free during our Open Week.

Whatever package suits you now, you can upgrade if you play more, we take into account what you have paid and if you join part way through our year, which begins in April, you pay a percentage. At the Players Club we like to be fair, we don’t charge you interest and you can spread your payments over 10 months.
