3 513 St. Catharine—St. Margaret Parish Family
Last week, there was a meeting of the core team
representatives of the five parishes in our cohort, to reflect
on and discuss the recommendations of the Diocesan
Planning Commission for the reorganization and pastoral
planning of parishes as part of the Faith in Our Future
Diocesan Initiative.
In case you have forgotten, St. Catharine-S.t Margaret is
part of a cohort of parishes that include, St. Mark’s in Sea
Girt, St. Rose in Belmar, St. Elizabeth in Avon and
Ascension in Bradley Beach. After examining the data
and statistics of each parish, and analyzing the trends for
Mass attendance, Sacramental life and financial support,
the Commission sent back their initial recommendations
for further study and discussion.
Each parish in the Diocese is involved in this process and
has received a preliminary recommendation. Some of
these initial recommendations will be welcomed and some
will likely challenge and even disappoint.
The recommendations for the neighboring parishes in
our cohort were: that St. Elizabeth, Ascension and St.
Rose Parishes should be merged into one parish at St.
Rose in Belmar, with St. Elizabeth or Ascension
remaining open as a continuing Mass site. After
further feasibility studies, one of these parishes should
be closed within two years. Further, it was
recommended that St. Catharine-St. Margaret, St.
Mark’s and the newly constituted St. Rose Parish
should be joined together in a collaborative
relationship in which they would share resources,
ministries, etc and form a common website and
coordinate their Mass times.
It is important to keep in mind:
1. This is just the fourth step in an 8 step process
2. These recommendations are preliminary and not set in
stone
3. It is estimated that 65 priests of the Diocese will retire
in the next 10 years
4. The recommendations represent many hours of
thought, work and discussion
Not surprisingly, the part of the recommendation that
caused most discussion and concern was the proposal to
close either St. Elizabeth or Ascension. It was emphasized
that these recommendations were preliminary suggestions
to be reviewed by the cohort. There was broad agreement
that the cohort should challenge this recommendation and
carefully respond to the conclusions of the Commission
with a detailed and cogent plan for the future detailing
another alternative.
The individual member parishes of the cohort are
scheduling open town hall meetings in their respective
parishes to provide a platform for discussion and reaction.
In addition, a cohort-wide open meeting for parishioners
of all 5 parishes has been scheduled for Sunday, August
21 at St. Rose Church in Belmar @ 2.00PM
St. Catharine-St. Margaret Parish will hold an open
house meeting on Friday, June 19 @ 7.00pm. The
meeting will be held in St. Catharine Church. We
invite you to come and hear the details of the Planning
Commission report and express your thoughts and
opinions.
If you would like further information on the Diocesan
Planning Commission process and report, click on to the
Diocesan website and look for the Faith in Our Future tab.
Fr Harry Cullen
In addition to the open house meeting at St.
Catharine’s on August 19, the other parishes in the
cohort are also scheduling meetings. You are invited to
attend all or any of these meetings:
Thursday August 11 at St. Elizabeth @ 7.00PM
Tuesday, August 16 at Ascension @ 7.00PM

SUMMER CONCERT SERIES Organ Music for Masses Weekend 8/13-14
Prelude: Prière, Op. 37, no. 3 - Joseph Jongen (1873-1953) Postlude: Choral, Op. 34, no. 4 - Jongen
Today's organ music is selected from Joseph Jongen's Four
Pieces for Organ. Born in Liège, Belgium in 1873, he was
such a prodigy that he began his training at the conservatory
there at just seven years of age. After sixteen years (!) of work
there, he traveled widely, studying with Richard Strauss in
Berlin, and Vincent d'Indy and Gabriel Fauré in Paris, and
serving as choir director at Richard Wagner's annual
Bayreuth Festival. His compositions reflect all of these
influences, as well as his lifelong love for the organ.
The Prieré is well-suited to the meditative stillness of the
church before Mass, giving voice to the heart's silent,
prayerful reflections, and expressing musically the believing
request of today's Introit: "Turn your eyes, O God, our
shield; and look on the face of your anointed one. One day
within your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere." The
Choral continues the assurance of our final hymn: the faith
we profess is a faith which will always grow, slowly, but
assuredly, until the Kingdom of God encompasses the whole
world.

Those who “winter” in South Florida will recognize Paul Todd and Paul Todd Jr. and be excited to have the opportunity
to attend on of their renowned concerts. Paul is a critically acclaimed prolific writer, entertainer, composer, arranger,
singer, and Music Director at St. Agnes Catholic Parish in Naples, Florida. He has been amazing crowds since he won
the prestigious National Yamaha Keyboard contest at the young age of fourteen. In the past, he has opened for such
celebrities as The Pointer Sisters, Rich Little, the Gatlin Brothers, and Joan Rivers. He has performed on Broadway with
Broadway greats: Hinton Battle, Carla Burns, and Danielle Furland. As a Christian artist, he has worked with some of
his favorites including, Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith and Phil Driscol. He has been a parish musical director for 16
years in Naples, and has raised money for parish missions, vocations, food banks and disaster relief. In 2005 Paul
established the Paul Todd Charities, Inc. to help further his ministry. Since its founding, the charity has raised hundreds
of thousands of dollars to help organizations like the Harry Chapin Food Bank, the YMCA, St. Vincent De Paul Society.
Paul and his son continue to astound and spiritually inspire people with their music.
Paul Todd Jr is also an accomplished entertainer, singer/song writer and worship leader. In 2014, Paul Jr. opened for
Lee Greenwood at the Lee Civic Center in Fr. Myers Florida. He has also done several sold-out solo performances at the
Broadway Palm Dinner Theater in Fr. Myers, Florida, and later released his first album, “The Great American
Songbook: Volume1”, which features unforgettable songs from crooning greats like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Franki
Valli, and Bobby Darin. He cites legends like Darin, Sinatra, and of course, his father as his primary inspirations. Like
his father, Paul Jr is a gifted song writer, having written the song “One Star” which is a tribute to our men in uniform
and is currently co-writing a brand new musical with his Dad titled “Under construction: The Musical”, which will
open later in 2016. You can find out more about the duo by visiting their websites at www.paultodd.com or
www.paultoddjr.com
On a personal note, I was privileged to be at St. Agnes Church in Naples, Fla. Two years ago when Paul’s eldest son
was ordained to the priesthood by the Bishop of the Diocese of Leeds, England. At that time, I talked to Paul, and
asked him to consider bringing his enormous talent and spiritual vision to St. Catharine-St. Margaret parish, and
Paul and his son are excited to come here.
In addition to the concert on August 29 (Monday evening), Paul and his son will play at the Masses at St. Catharine
Church on the weekend of August 27/28. I expect that at that time there will be a big rush for tickets to his concert, so I
encourage you to reserve a ticket now in advance, because seating is limited. Tickets are $25.
