TOWN HALL MEETINGS TO
DEVELOP A NEW STRATEGIC
PLAN FOR THE PARISH
The St. Catharine - St. Margaret Parish Pastoral Council is engaging in a strategic planning process that will help set the shared vision of our parish community for the next 5 years. As part of the planning process, we will be discussing our strengths as a parish as well as some of our challenges with the objective of completing a new Strategic Plan for the parish by June 2017. The new Strategic Plan will lay out clear goals and objectives for each of the targeted areas of pastoral focus we identify along with the specific action steps and timelines that align with our anticipated outcomes. To kick off the planning process, Fr. Cullen and the Pastoral Council will be holding the second Town Hall meetings at the St. Catharine School Auditorium. The meeting will run from 7-9pm.
Wednesday, February 1, 2017
We encourage all members of our parish community to participate in this meeting and join us in this exciting endeavor as we strive to make our parish the best it can be. If you are interested, please indicate your intention to attend these meetings by sending an RSVP email to Jack Kirnan of the Pastoral Council at [email protected].
Once we have concluded the Town Hall meeting, we will be posting regular updates on both our parish website as well as in the Parish Bulletin so that everyone in our parish community is informed of our progress. The Pastoral Council is looking forward to working with all parishioners on this important initiative.
The St. Catharine – St. Margaret Parish Pastoral Council
Dear
Parishioners…
Today marks the beginning of Catholic Schools Week,
and we welcome to St. Catharine-St. Margaret Parish and
School today and next week, parents and families who are
looking to enroll their children or just look at our school.
We have reason to give thanks for the blessing of our
school. St. Catharine’s School is not just a blessing to
families and children of our parish, but also to families in
neighboring parishes It is remarkable in view of the fact
that we live in an area that has many excellent public
schools that families are wiling to make the financial
sacrifice involved in sending their children to our Catholic
School. We know that parents nowadays are very well
informed and discriminating, and think carefully
before committing to the expense of sending their
children to a school such as ours. Clearly, the parents of
380+ students see something unique and special about St.
Catharine School and are willing to make the sacrifice.
In return, we like to think that we offer them a well
above average academic education in a safe and
nurturing environment built on solid Catholic values
and principles. Standardized testing results above local
and national standards, and a disproportionate number of
graduates accepted into select magnet school each year,
and into private and public high schools of their choice,
attest to the high academic standards of the school.
At this time, we project that we will have openings in pre-
school, and kindergarten, and some openings in the
elementary grades. There has been great demand for
places in our PreK class, and we are contemplating
opening a second class if present enrollment patterns
continue. While the upper grades are at, or close to
capacity, openings do occur when families transfer or
move away between now and the beginning of school in
September. Needless to say, priority will be given in
Kindergarten to students already enrolled in St. Catharine
Preschool.
Today as we celebrate the beginning of Catholic
Schools Week, we salute and thank, Mr. Dougherty,
our Principal and Mr. Ciak our Vice-Principal and
our dedicated and strong faculty and PTA and staff.
Fr Harry Cullen
Irish Mass Please note that the 10:00 AM Mass at St. Margaret’s
on Sunday, March 3 will be celebrated in the Irish
language. The Pipes and Drums of the Ocean County
Emerald Society will be present and will play during
the Mass. This is the morning of the Belmar St.
Patrick’s Day Parade, so invite family and friends who
may be coming into the area for the parade.
FEAST OF ST. BLAISE
Friday, February 3 is the feast of St.
Blaise. He has been associated in the
history of the Church and venerated as
a saint who has special powers of
intercession for persons who have
diseases related to the throat. The blessing of St.
Blaise will be given at the end of all the Masses on
Friday, February 3 and next weekend.

Elevation of St Robert
Bellarmine Church to the
status of Co-Cathedral Bishop O’Connell has announced that in addition
to the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption,
which remains the Mother Church of the Diocese,
St. Robert Bellarmine Church in Freehold has
been elevated to the dignity of a Co-Cathedral in
recognition of the role it has played and will
continue to play in meeting the needs associated
with the life and activities of the Diocese of
Trenton. A seat or "cathedra" for the Bishop will
be placed in the sanctuary, reserved only for the
Bishop in liturgical celebrations. Certain
diocesan events will be scheduled annually in the
Co-Cathedral of St. Robert Bellarmine, while
others will remain in the Cathedral in Trenton.
Plans are being made for the liturgical celebration
surrounding the elevation of St. Robert Church to
the dignity of a Co-Cathedral on Sunday,
February 19th at 11.30AM. The Apostolic Nuncio
or his delegate will attend that Mass for the
signing of the “acta” or official document of
elevation.

Altar Server News By this time members of the parish are getting used to
seeing our apprentice altar servers on the altar. Their
installation as St. Catharine-St. Margaret altar servers
will take place at the 10.30AM Mass at St. Catharine’s
on Sunday, February 15. In the meantime we
encourage our apprentice altar servers to
participate in as many Masses as possible, and we
encourage our more experienced altar servers to
support and guide them.

Congratulations to our
Geography Bee Winner
Eighth grader Griffin Mulcahy!
A round of applause goes to all our participants—Jack Gloster (8th), Jack Lang (7th), Alexis O'Connor (7th), Anthony DeCotiis (6th), Michael Schroeder (6th), Jack Michael Bruno (5th), Michael Child (5th), Lindsay Gilbert (4th), and Thomas Schneider (4th).
On Friday, January 20th the 2017, the National Geographic Bee was held at Saint Catharine School. Ten contestants in grades four through eight participated. In order to advance to the school Bee, each contestant had previously won the grade level Bee in their homeroom. Students were asked questions prepared by National Geographic for this event, and every
school across the country that participated was given the same questions. Contestants were allowed two incorrect answers before being eliminated from the competition. Every participant showed good sportsmanship and did an excellent job of answering these difficult questions. The winner of the Geography Bee was eighth grader Griffin Mulcahy. Griffin will now take a written test which will determine if he will move on to the state level Bee. We wish him the best!!
The other students that participated were: 8th Grade- Jack Gloster, Griffin Mulcahy 7th Grade- Jack Lang, Alexis O’Connor 6th Grade- Anthony Decotiis, Michael Schroeder 5th Grade- JackMichael Bruno, Michael Child 4th Grade- Lindsay Gilbert, Thomas Schneider.

MARRIAGES: All couples planning marriage should notify the parish at least
one year in advance. The Church sees marriage in one’s own parish as the most
proper arrangement, therefore, people who reside in St. Catharine - St. Margaret
Parish have a right to be married here. Others should receive the sacrament in
their own parishes. The bride, the groom, or their parents must be registered and
living in this Parish for at least one year. Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter
Weekend is required as is participation in FOCCUS; a self-diagnostic inventory
designed to help couples learn more about themselves and their unique relationship. Please call 732-449-5765, ext. 134.
